I am putting together a WWI RP but this has a significant twist. All technologies will be designed by the players, with the confines of the technology of the era. This means that start up will be slow, however, since so many RPs die due to lack of enthusiasm and participation this will significantly weed out those who are unwilling to put in the time and effort that makes RPs boring and then die.
For example In the WWI RP I created a very feasible assault rifle based off of the Mondragon and a few technologies of the time:

Fusil M-1908 "Mondragon" with a few tweeks to make it work in 1914.
Problem:
The service life of these rifles in German army was rather short, as Mondragon system was sensitive to dirt and fouling, which were so typical for trench warfare of WW1
Solution:
use of a denser guncotton
an electroplated chrome plated barrel
