BREAKING NEWS: Bruxella to suspend its membership of APOC
"We're... just recieving breaking news that Prime Minister Alden is to make an urgent, unannounced statement in Parliament regarding the Alliance for the Preservation of Civilisation..."
"Yes...Associated Press is reporting that all MPs have just recieved advance notice of the statement, due to take place in an hours time..." continued the second newsreader, reading from a side of A4.
"We now go to our defence affairs corresponded outside the Ministry of Defence, Alex Bark. Alex, what do we know...?"
Parliament; one hour later
"Mr Speaker, I would like to begin by thanking the honourable members for attending Parliament at such short notice, for what I come to this place to talk about today is of fundamental concern for the Sovereign Kingdom. I am hereby announcing to this house that it is this Government's intention to suspend the Sovereign Kingdom's membership of the Alliance for the Protection of Civilisation, APOC.
The Prime Minister is interrupted by a hundred or more frantic conversations amongst backbenchers and opposition MPs alike.
"Order! The Prime Minister," bellowed the Speaker, silencing the raucous MPs
In recent months it has become clear to His Sovereign Majesty's Government that the people of Bruxella have grown increasingly sceptical of the alliance. In particular, I take note of the numerous petitions I have recieved, and the protest marches that were held in the Capital and across the Bruxellan territories following the recent revamp of the Theeb Accords in Vetaka and the decision of our ally Doomingsland to attend this.
This Government has also noted with concern the ever-escalating rhetoric used by certain leaders of the Alliance and of leaders of the region of Gholgoth. Whilst I personally, and I believe the majority of my fellow citizens, have little praise for the gothic states and have deep concerns regarding the intentions of that bloc, I do not believe that the Sovereign Kingdom should be dragged into a costly and unneccessary war with these nations; a war that no Bruxellan desires. I have, barely a week ago, returned from a peace conference held by our Questarian brothers in Jesselton. As has widely been reported in the press, I chose to depart early. I continue to refuse to enter into discussion regarding the private conversations of various senior diplomats, however I shall attempt to explain my reasoning behind this.
That peace conference was designed as an attempt to make one final step towards peace. It was my understanding that this meeting was to result in the drafting of a Non Agression Pact that would have prevented the two most powerful alliances on NSEarth from being cast into a devastating war of attrition, a war that would cause untold economic disruption and would cost a great deal of human lives. Sadly I must report, Mr Speaker, that this conference was instead hijacked by certain nations - I shall not name names - whose honourable leaders allowed the event to descend into a farcical exchange of petty insults."
MPs jeer and wave their papers. "Shame!" "Name them!"
"Order! Honourable members must let the Prime Minister speak," interjected the speaker.
"...Once again, I shall not name names. I believe, from that outburst, Mr Speaker, that the honourable members would share the deep disgust that I felt at this point. It was then that I made the decision to depart. This meeting was, then, the catalyst for the decision of the cabinet earlier today to temporarily suspend our membership of the Alliance, in protest at some of the behaviour demonstrated. Later this afternoon I shall have discussions with my counterparts in Questers and our other allies to consider the ramifcations of our decision, during which I shall call upon them to put pressure upon those who would seek an unneccessary war. Mr Speaker, I commend this statement to the house," finished the PM, sitting.
