Election Results Ignite Protests, Accusations of Vote Rigging

Ignacio Kalvan, the owner of a used car lot in Neo-Savannah, which since his nation’s recovery and autonomy from war Akimonad, had done a fairly good business, opened his computer’s home page and sipped his coffee. He had voted in the elections, because he did know the weight of it all, who ever lead the Confederate States next would have a great role in determining its future.

The headlines interested him, but the article’s content infuriated him. Kez Iko, a member of the ‘Nationalist Socialist Party’ had won the election. Ignacio, like many Echoese, felt that the Socialist Senate had led to the past wars and conflicts. Moreover, he had overtaken the opponents by just a percent, it broke down like this:

Kez Iko (Nat’l Socialist) 45%
Ivan Junio (Non-Partisan) 44%
Joe Robert (Absolute Capitalist) 9%
Others (2%)

It didn’t seem possible, Ignacio thought, hoping that somehow he was dreaming, no one would be so stupid to elect a fascist communist leader in disguise, especially after a war. He recalled his voting, then remembered the man with the National Socialist pin in a black suit that stood near the ballot boxes, then more and more he remembered that he would walk back and forth, in and out of the booths. No. Ignacio though, we have been fooled.

Ignacio found he was not the only one, thousands had come to protest the elections, he looked out of his apartment’s window and saw that he was not the only one upset, protesters were beginning to fill the streets.

By the end of the day the protests teetered on violence.

Kez Iko made a brief statement in Upson, the capital:

“People, we have made the best choice of the Echo Islands, we have made the right choice by electing me! I will bring stability and freedom to this country! Long live the Confederacy!” He said, all in smiles and in a youthful way.

This only further outraged the people.

Emperor Irasur Seawind, only recently elected himself, was quite unhappy with the news. "Socialists again?" he asked State Secriatist Fyren Redwood, "I'd think that they'd be a minor party after the War of Liberation."

"I agree, Sèr Emperor. It doesn't seem right."

"The function of a democracy is to satisfy the majority. When the majority is dissatisfied, the only logical conclusion is that something foul is afoot."

"Where shall the Empire stand?"

"We'll let the Echoese look into it on their own. After all, we've fought to defend their sovereignty many times, and they are our allies. We'll offer help if needed. Leanne? Get me that letterhead."

We note that our ally has peacefully concluded an election. We would like to simply remind the new Senate, and indeed the Echoese nation as a whole, that the Kiravian Empire is, as always, on call for assistance. We do hope that our diplomatic, military, economic, and cultural ties shall continue to hold strong.

TCS Endurance
Carrier Battle Group 15

Rear Admiral Peter Sullivan was not happy with his latest orders. His Battle Group had already been patrolling the sea lanes near the Far Echo Isles for almost two months and had been scheduled to return to base in just four days. Of course things had destablized in the FEI (not that things had ever been very stable there anyway in Sullivan's opinion). The Tolvanic Navy had patrolling the waters near the FEI for months but the Commonwealth had stayed out of various wars in the area. Now that things were finally setlling down the Prime Minister had decided to reduce the patrol strength from a full Battle Group to just a pair of cruisers, but now those cruisers would join the Battle Group and the combined task group, designated Force F, would patrol the area for the near future.

Official Communiqué

The Autocratic Federated Empire of Akimonad is deeply troubled with the turmoil beginning to engulf our prized jewel.

Personally, Lord Protector Dr. Jules Hodz has suggested new elections where the polling stations are guarded by Echoese soldiers, or, for the benefit of total neutrality, Akimonadi soldiers.

However, Dr. Hodz wishes to make it known that he in no way endorses another Socialist party to be in control, as this undermines many of the basic values of Akimonad. He will let democracy flow its course, though.

Please respond at your earliest convenience.

Respectfully,
Frederick Bremer,
Proconsul of the Far Echo Islands and
Official Akimonadi Legate

Office of the Arbiter

“Listen, Senator Smith,” said Arbiter Hyit as he argued with the Senator from the State of Slevin, which was near New St. Petersburg, “I have called the Supreme Court and the Election Council to emergency meetings today, I have no power in this matter, and all I can do is tell people to do something! I hope that being a Senator you would be familiar with the powers of the Arbiter as defined by the Articles of Confederation.” Hyit paused, “Yes…of course Senator, good day to you too.” With that Hyit hung up the phone.

“I told you that you mightn’t want to take that call.” Said one of the Upson Palace Staff.

“Yea, yea, doesn’t matter really, we’ll all hear the Supreme Courts ruling today.” Responded Hyit arrogantly.

The Floor of the Supreme Court

Chief Justice Jonathan Lasdak rose to speak, “It is hereby that this Supreme Court has found that due to the unusual circumstances, that the previous election results be disregarded and that a new election date selected. The new elections will be guarded and conducted by Akimonadi personnel, and the new Arbiter shall be decided at the time which all the votes have been counted. This court is now in recess.”

With that, as people all around the nation had been watching the live broadcast, and they were ecstatic that they would not once again fall under socialist rule. Perhaps there was some sort of hope for a free and prosperous coexistence with Akimonad and in the international community.

Krovenirene Palace, Kartika

Emperor Seawind was in the Palace's Green Room when a page delivered a telegram from the Kiravian embassy in the Echo Islands.

"Good. A new election. Hopefully we won't end up with the Socialists again. Call up Ambassador Whitesea, and tell him to keep me informed."

The Echo Islands was an important country for Seawind. Little had reached the Empire about it since Emperor Raincedar's resignation, and it was critical that the he keep up relations with the Empire's closest ally.

Greysand, New Harbour

The streets of the Echo-Kiravian city were buzzing with the news. The vast majority of New Harbourers were happy with the anullment of the election. There had been protests there, just as strong as those in Echonia. Despite so far from it, many Echoese-Kiravians felt closely connected to their motherland. The vastest oceans could not disconnect them from their beloved island home.

National Socialist Party Conference, Waterdoor Hotel, Upson

“You told me this was foolproof!” shot Kez Iko at one of his advisers.

“Senator, this was a ridiculous plan, had we not done what we did the independents prolly would have gotten as much as 80% of the vote! Everybody else would have had more and we might have had a half percent! This wasn’t rigging a hundred thousand votes or so, we rigged over ten million!”

“Damn it! We are at a loss, Aki won’t tolerate any type of touching the votes and will probably count them for themselves just to make sure. What am I gonna do! Karl Marx is rolling over in his grave as yet another nation looks to capitalism as the way out! Argh!” the candidate massaged his temples after his frustrated sentence.

“Well, sir,” began another Socialist senator, “I feel that we should rectify the situation by any means necessary, if you get my drift.”

“Do you mean you expect to pull a coup! NOW?!” screamed Iko.

The other senator nodded his head.

Office of the Arbiter

“Excuse me ma’am,” said Iko to a sectary, “I am Senator Kez Iko, I have an appointment with the Arbiter.”

“Ah, yes, you are right here. He’s running a little behind today, please have a seat and Arbiter Hyit will see you as soon as he can.” She said politely.

Kez took a seat. He’d been planning this all night, he was ready. He hadn’t had to go through security because he was a senator, so the 9mm in his pocket was ready to do its job. He waited.

“The Arbiter will see you now.” Called the sectary to the Senator.

Iko rose, his hand quivered a little. He entered the Arbiters office and took a seat.

“Ah, Senator Iko!” began Delpin in his usually cheery demeanor. “what is it you wanted to see me about anyway?”

“Well, Arbiter,” his voice crackled a little, “I feel with all this mess about elections and what not we should talk about things.”

“Excuse me Senator, I don’t understand you point in all this, I have a full day, I don’t mean to sound rude, but could we do our best to make this brief?” said Hyit as he dug through some papers for a second.

“OK then.” Said Iko, reaching in his coat pocket, suddenly a gunshot cracked out. It was a miss.

“You socialist son of a bitch!” called out Hyit from under his desk. He opened his bottom drawer and pulled out an Uzi. More shots were heard from Iko as he killed the guards. Hyit fired his Uzi over the top of his desk blindly, all misses. Hyit pushed a button on the bottom of his desk and a section of far wall opened up. He rattled off another series of shots to keep Iko pinned down as he made his escape.

As it turned out many of the Palace Staff were actually socialist supporters, and had been emplaced by the socialist senate in the Palace. Most still supported Hyit though, and he ran down the secret corridor towards his helicopter on the roof. He flung open the door on the roof top to see the midday sun blazing down, and his helicopter already running and ready, he sprinted toward it.

A socialist guard popped off a few rounds at Hyit, but missed. Hyit did a summersault into the helicopter and held on as it lifted off. He was glad to see Vice-Arbiter Hogan on board as well. “Seems we dodged even more bullets, eh ole buddy!”

“Yup.” Responded Hogan.

The helicopter flew off toward the east, then, an RPG came from behind, from the roof of the palace, the rocket flew off, the shooter was killed by other guards immediate, but there was no stopping the rocket.

The pilot gripped the stick and his instincts sent him into evasive maneuvers, but the rocket was coming from too close, the helicopter didn’t have time to react, the rocket slammed into the airborne vehicle.

The Helicopter did not seem to fall normally from the sky, it did not spiral downward or continue falling in the direction it had been heading, it stopped so suddenly that it seemed it might defy some laws of physics, and it fell straight down, like some demented guillotine blade. All on board died instantly.

By 17:00 hours that afternoon, the supreme court had declared that the Arbiter was no longer able to fulfill his duties and that the vice Arbiter was unable to fulfill them either. Therefore the new Arbiter would be, following the line of succession, President Pro temp. of the Senate, Alexander Jari, a socialist. Jari was quickly sworn in, and appointed his vice-arbiter as none other than the now infamous Kez Iko.

Official Declaration

As promised, I let democracy run its course. However, it would appear that democracy has failed.

I am therefore forced to take action to ensure the democratic nature of Echonia. The deaths of the Arbiter and Vice Arbiter in an apparent coup will be thoroghly investigated. However, as the Socialist party, which is now in control due to curious circumstances, has been determined to have committed election fraud by Echonia's own court, it is our belief that the Socialist Party is behind the unauthorized change in government. As the change was neither peaceful or democratic, I hereby decree that the current Arbiter and Vice Arbiter are to relinquish their positions to Proconsul Bremer until such time as our investigation is completed and elections are held, free of any fraud.

As a side note, I will note that it is my opinion that Socialism and its representive party are the cause of the turmoil in Echonia. I for one have no plans of further tolerating it in Echonia; it causes only violence and destabilization. I request that the Socialist Party voluntarily disband itself. Should it choose not to, I may be forced to take further action.
Sincerely,
Dr. Jules Hodz,
Lord Protector

A black mourning banner hung over the door of the State Complex and New Harbour's government building. Mourners and protestors filled Kartika's and Greysand's streets.

"Appalling. Thank God that this kind of shit doesn't go on here," said Emperor Seawind as he read the latest report. "As if a coup wasn't enough, we've also lost one of our greatest supporters in Echonia, and the archipelago is back under Akimonadi administration. Any more wonderful news?"

"I think not, Irasur. But times have indeed changed from the War of Liberation. The Picts have built closer ties between the Silver Imperium and Akimonad," siad Fyren Redwood, Secriatist of State. He wor a black mourning cloak in honour of Delphin Hyit.

"True."

"And we both stand in the same place when Socialism is concerned."

"Right behind Lenin holding an assault rifle to his back."

"Percisely. Plus, we can't deny that what the Akimonadi are doing now is legitimate and beneficial."

"They're getting the Islands out of Socialist hands."

"Which is what we want to happen, and what the Echoese want to happen."

"In that case, we ought to support it. Get me another letterhead."

Echoese Affairs Office

Following the deadly and abhorrent events in Upson, let me first convey my personal condolences to the families of Delpin Hyit and Sèr Hogan, and the condolences of State Secriatist Redwood and Governor Peale Oceanlife. Their deaths shall not be forgotten, and they are in my, and our, prayers.

Concerning the recent Akimonadi reentry into Echoese politics, I would like to state the Kiravian Empire's position:

We believe that these circumstances do indeed make a transitional supervisory presence neccessary until true democracy can be reclaimed. Additionally, we are glad that economic freedom has been secured. We shall take no action against it, and to the contrary, are prepared to provide support to the Far Echo Islands in acheiving political stability, and are more than willing to cooperate with Akimonadi orders to do so.

May these times of death end.

Aboard the CSS Joedeco, 2 NM out of Port Upson

The flags flew at half staff, the sunny day seemed misplaced for the mourning that was going on, the leaders of the nation were dead, the people were upset, a coup had just taken place, and here was the sun, as if to cheer them up. How dare it? How could it be so oblivious to their situation? Not to mention it was springtime, everything was in bloom, it was all so colorful and beautiful, but everyone was so sad.

Millions watched from TV and the esteemed guests who were granted access to the ship’s deck watched soloemly as Delpin and Hogan’s eulogies were read. There was some collective sobbing going on; black funeral ware cooked the guests as they watched. The sun was relentless in its intensity, and the black funeral ware was absorbing every ray.

People watched in horror as the leaders’ remains were thrown off the bow, wrapped in traditional rugs of their respective tribes. The two splashes were quiet, but everyone heard them as if they were nearby sonic booms.

Afterward, Alexander Jari took the stage.

“My fellow Echo Islanders, I must say, this is indeed a solemn day, one that will be remembered as a day when two of the great leaders of this nation were put to rest, at sea, as per their final whishes.” He began so eloquently.

“But we must remember that this end is a new beginning. We must remember that this is the start of a free, equal, and socialis—“ He was abruptly cut off. A man had smuggled in a ceramic knife past security. He had slit the new Arbiter’s throat. As soon as they realized what had happened, the people cheered, not realizing the reprocussions. Blood flowed over black wool suits and silk ties. A guard quickly shot the man, and then people did their best to scatter, but being on a patrol boat, that was not easy.

Upson Palace

Kez Iko had not been on that boat. He had plenty of good reasons why. This was one of them. He had been watching the funeral too, mostly to see if his hitman did the job. And so he had. “Arbiter Iko.” He said to himself. “That sounds damn good. Arbiter Kez Iko, the Great Socialist Leader of Echonia. Hell yes.”

Amidst mild media attention, well at least for an Arbitral inauguration ceremony, Iko took the oath, and took the reigns.

“Alls well that ends well.” He chuckled to himself

To: The Kiravian Empire

You have offered assistance, and we would like to take advantage of that offer.

Preliminary investigations by Plan6 Intelligence Service suggests that a larger plot of Socialists was the cause of current discord in Echonia. They believe that the new Arbiter, a man named Iko, is the ringleader of the conspiracy.

It would be difficult and dangerous to publicly arrest him and it would likely be ineffective. We therefore propose a covert operation with elite special forces to detain Mr. Iko and, if necessary, eliminate him.

Should he be arrested he will be deported to Akimonad and charged with disturbing the peace as well as conspiracy to murder.

Please contact us as soon as possible.

Supreme Court, Upson

The Chief Justice has announced that elections will continue as planned. The new date is set for Thursday, 16 April 2008AD.

Upson Palace

"No, no, no!" Said Iko as he read the Chief Justice's statement. He'd never get to keep his power, how would he do it. A single word came to mind "Innsurection."

That's what he'd do, declare a state of open innsurrection and suspend the Artices of Confederation! Then he could overturn the supreme courts decision and dissolve the Senate, then he'd have his power, he'd have it forever.

An Executive Order
From the Office of the Arbiter

Due to the recent terroristic attacks, I hereby declare the Confederate States of the Far Echo Islands an open innsurrection and hereby authorize myself to take any measures neccessary to combat it.

Signed,
Kez Iko
