LMW-CAWS (Combined Action Weapon System)

Overview

The LMW-CAWS is a long debated and controversial weapon platform. With many critics saying that the idea of having two diverse actions in one weapon was not space effective. After the engineers at LMW (Lansing-Mitchell Weaponeering) began the project they found that the majority of the critiques that had been made about the design where indeed correct. Projects like the OICW came and went, but the engineers kept working. With the introduction of the vertical-bolt piston action by KRISS for its SUPER-V submachine gun, the men finally had the action they were looking for. By tinkering with the SUPER-Vs action, adding weight to the rear of the bolt-piston and balancing the weight a few centimeters in front of the trigger mechanism they were able to utilize the vertical-bolt piston action with the much higher recoil of the 12-gauge shotgun shell. The results were not comparable to the SUPER-Vs but for a shotgun, they were outstanding. The shotgun barrel was also fitted to shoot 3in rifle fired-grenades. The rifle component was designed around the 5.7x28mm round. The round was chosen because it was small light and was not automatically lethal. The shooter of this rifle must place well-aimed shots to kill an adversary, and in police work, peacekeeping, riot control and hostage rescue the option between shoot to kill and shoot to apprehend is appreciated by some shooters. After tedious years of working the CAWS has finally been completed.
As mentioned before this is not a battle rifle. This rifle is meant to provide non-combatant organizations the firepower needed to combat extreme violence in a controlled manner, while still giving the shooter accurate and effective firepower. The shotgun was design primarily for busting through locked doors, as a CS gas launcher, and as a self-defense weapon. The combined system, thus, clearly bridges the gap between the police sidearm and the combat assault rifle.

Technical Description
The CAWS’ breakdown into its two actions are as follows:
The rifle is a gas-operated, air-cooled, select-fire rifle chambered for the 5.7x28mm round. The rifle system utilizes an angled top feeding mechanism. The rounds come out of the magazine and rotate the remaining 60° until they are in line with the barrel. The feeding mechanism is behind the allowing for a longer barrel in a shorter weapon, which gives the shooter more accuracy for his weapon length. Thus, the barrel is 600mm long in a weapon that is only 800mm long.

The shotgun has a vertical-bolt piston, is air-cooled and is chambered at 12-gauge/3in. The shotgun system utilizes spring-loading mechanism. The rounds are pushed up by a spring until they are in line with the barrel. The feeding mechanism is backed by a chamber for the bolt piston to move into when the shotgun is fired. This allows for maximum use of space on the weapon as the system is not making the gun taller by adding another horizontal bolt or exceeding the length of the magazine. It also does not take up horizontal space as it fits perfectly in front of the trigger. This gives the gun a forward of center balance point, and adds weight under the barrel which increases accuracy.

The weapon is made from composites to keep the weight down and for comfort of the user in all weather conditions. All of the screws have the same head to facilitate easy maintenance. The under barrel of the shotgun has a rails for flashlights, lasers dots, or 20mm grenade launchers. The sight mount on the top of the weapon is compatible with the vast majority of military grade optics.

Also to Doom for the format.
