Um, hi. I'm really...really-really-really...new to all this.

I would REALLY love to get involved in an active roleplaying country thing. But, a lot of them say FT. What's 'FT'?

Please help me. I'd love to join something.

FT is Future Tech, Faster than light space travel and what not. Lots of different options; some people want Hard Sci-fi that could be plausible, others play fast and loose like Star Wars. People use various fictional Sci-fi universes as their basis, or they make up their own unique ones. Less effective is bastardising many things together.

Hope that clears some of it up. We don't bite...Much.

FT means FUTURE like space and such, MT is modern(today)

Whenever you see something like FT or MT or PT then it refers to the technological era of that RP. Meaning, FT is Futuristic Technology (starships, lasers, etc.); MT is Modern Technology (what you see today); and PT is Past Technology (swords, bows, catapults, etc.)

Yup, pretty much depends what tech level you'd like your nation to be. I'm an FT person myself, like Chronosia. Look for threads that say 'Open' in the title, those are free for anyone to join in and are a good way to get started. You can also start up your own introduction thread to invite people to start interacting with your nation.

So yeeeees, come plaaaaay with uuuuus! :p

Thanks for clearing it up... question...

do we have to use our real nation to RP? (what if I want to RP in different worlds w/different nations? Second, what tech level is NationStates at? Mt, ft, or pt?

Ok... can someone point me to a good, welcoming, explaining, FT game/thread...and one for MT...and one for PT.

TY

[EDIT: Oh yes... and as they both are RPing forums, (I think), what's the difference between: International Incidents and NationStates?]

Also FT != Faster-than-light. I have a sub-light FT civilization, limited not by lack of technological advance, but by adherence to the laws of physics because I prefer hard Sci-fi, probably due to the fact I remember more clearly of Star Wars Episode I(Argh!) than of the others and because after watching Pearl Harbor I concluded on most Soft Sci-fi Stuff I saw: "Is that it? Replace battleships with death stars and World War Two fighters with spacefighters, and you got Science Fiction?", it just can't catch me that much as a more "realistic" show like Firefly does and I'm tired of seeing the typical soft sci-fi tropes over and over, but personal preference, mind you.

Oh, and special relativity can bring some interesting perspectives... like wars that could effectively last for thousands of years even when there is no "Galactic Empire" involved but two solar systems with opposing factions running them.

EDIT: Oh yes... and as they both are RPing forums, (I think), what's the difference between: International Incidents and NationStates?

The basic differences, from what I perceived, are that NS has a larger quantity of closed and character-focused roleplays and tends to be the meeting point of the Fantasy RPers, whereas II tends to have more open roleplays and is usually dominated by either MT or FT. And II also has more war or diplomatic RPs on overall than character-focused RPs.

To be an FTer is to be as imaginative with your own nation, by your own choice, to whatever end your imagination desires. Having fun and making a good plot helps too. This is more than just having shiny ships, statistics out the wazzo, or Chronosia having a Care Bear tea party. (Hey, it could happen.)

The fun comes down to what you want it to be, for yourself. The techbase for FT as it is, overdone and all, still is there to be used, as you wish to deem fit. Aye, the rules a good guideline to generally follow, if you want to worry about having PC wars that have too much OOC comments in them and all. (Where I think the worry of wankery and GMing ends up more than not.) But I still go to the plot as where things shine. The more I write this, the more I believe it.

No, you don't need a formally new nation, if you can come up with some reasonable excuse why a large population went into the stars. Just be sure to take 'some' development into account, which comprises the history, which then comprises the eventual plots. (How much of real history is so much a plot without intention anyway, as all such continues along even now?)

The key in all this, is the fun factor, the enjoyment of growth in what you create. These with your imagination, will settle where you want to go in FT. Let not others be your guide, that your own hand can drag your own hand along with anyway.

And remember, tribbles are just as lethal as neutron star blasts. =^^=

No, actually. At least not in FT. You can actually play around with different nations, factions, and such under your one user name (though most try to have seperate NS accounts for each one that they RP). As long as you can still tell a story without godmoding, you're going to be okay.

Thank you so much for all of your answers!

I can't wait to get started in this.

I have a package of requests, though:

1. Modern Tech:
a) Could I please be pointed towards an active thread that would
i. let me join as Azemica immediately
ii. let me ask, partly IC and partly OOC, how to set up embassies and diplomatic relations and history and and and and...etc...
iii. easy to play in for a 'noob'.
b) I think that I would like to play a more nation-oriented game than character-oriented, although I'm happy to play a more sort of half-half game.

2. Future Tech:
a) Could you point me towards a
i) character oriented game/thread that would allow me to see what a FT game is like... I mean, MT is more self-explanatory
ii) nation oriented game/thread that would allow me to see what a FT game is like... I mean, MT is more self-explanatory
b) Could you show me a thread where I could join in... maybe see what info I should make for my nation...

3. Past Tech:
a) Could you point me towards a
i) character oriented game/thread that would allow me to see what a FT game is like... I mean, MT is more self-explanatory
ii) nation oriented game/thread that would allow me to see what a FT game is like... I mean, MT is more self-explanatory

I suppose you could join the thread " Attack on AIW", but read it and ask what you would want to do in that war.

Check out "Lost in Space," if you can stand the tedium of having a bunch of nations come together and make nicey-nicey.

Thread has a case of McCaffery Syndrome (no bad guy), but it'll serve as a good intro to FT.

BTW, you have to send a telegram to the nation that started the thread and request inclusion. This is called "TGing" them ("TG" is a transitive verb).
