Lida, Bull Horns Rule, 9:00 PM, December 12

Bull Hornian T-72's were fired up, they all moved in unison across the barren, snow covered fields. This was not a training mission, they had direct orders to cross the border into Thrashia. The tanks were cold, men shivering inside, the tanks were on a main route between BHR and Thrashia. The 4th Cavalry Brigade, led by Guillermo Ashla. Elite tankers were placed in the lead tanks, howitzers were put into position 2 miles to the rear of the tanks. All came to a halt, a message came over the radio, "Wait for my signal! Fire!" All the howitzers fired, shells exploded, taking out a border station. Tanks rolled over the border into Thrashia. Infantry clung to the backs of tanks, their breath, and the exhaust was visible.

Rafael Light, a private in the Bull Hornian Army, was clinging to the back of a T-72, he thought, What is the purpose of this? Is this to test out army equipment? Hopefully this war is short and relatively peaceful.

Minsk, Bull Horns Rule, 9:15 PM, December 12

SU-27's took off, their mission was to knock out enemy aircraft and radar stations. Before they reached the border a voice came over, "Target acquired, Requesting permission to fire."
"Permission granted!"
"Fire, Fox-1, Fox-2, Fox-4!"

Vilnius Military Airport | 9:20 P.M.

They were given five minutes. One minute for the forward radar stations to report non-Thrashian planes entering the Duchy’s air space. Two minutes to identify them and know that they were not civilian, but military air craft. One minute to alert pilots and base defense personnel. And the last one minute spent cursing and swearing as weapons were brought to bear. Five minutes in which BHR fighters roared in.

Part of the 5th Fighter Wing Group was caught on the tarmac still prepping for launch. Bullets and missiles tore into them, destroying them even as their pilots tried against all odds to try launching. One was half-way down the strip before a missile took it in its jets. A fire ball replaced it and flew down the blackened road like a Fury out of Hell. Other fighters were caught inside their hangars, their ground crews still desperately trying to get them operational.

Needless to say, the forward air base at Vilnius was caught with its pants down. The Alytus Air Force Training Base, located at the nearby city of Alytus was also brought under fire. BHR forces must not have realised that the base was simply used for training purposes and did not actually contain any real military craft. It and the Vilnius base received the strongest pounding.

Army High Command Control Center | Vilnius | 9:30 P.M.

Major General Garret van Ornem walked into the myriad of computer stations and communications arrays like a fiery titan of Greek myth. Steam almost seemed to fume from between his clenched teeth and nostrils. He was wearing his dress uniform, having been about to attend an Officer’s Ball to celebrate a successful end to a large winter exercise. The festive rose at his breast hardly matched the image of anger that festered forth from his eyes.

He walked up to a small elevated table where a computerized tactical map was presented, lighting up small sigils standing for units and other military bases. It also showed small images of a red explosion. Obvious signs of where combat was happening. He looked over at the pair of officers standing there also dressed in Dress Uniform, and also pissed off.

“Where the hell did these bastards come from?” roared General Ornem.

“Bulls Horn Rule,” replied one of the officers, a Lieutenant General Stefan Rossovossky. “We received the news just before we left the compound for the Ball. Our forward relay stations, thankfully still alert after the inspections during the winter exercise from two days before, were able to identify air craft coming and even now bombing our two major airbases in the area.”

“And,” added in the second officer, Brigadier General Aleksander Michevsky, “thus far a single major crossing point has been established by an armoured column along the Lina-Vilnius road, where they destroyed the border guard station.”

“Well then I want everything we have available to stop that column!” ordered General Ornem. “Stop them in their tracks. Have the Luftwaffe alerted and send out orders for the 2nd Air Group at Utena to attack that column. Civilians are to be led north over the Neris River and see to it that the Vilnius police are out in force.

“What forces do we have ready by the way?”

“The 1st Imperial Armored Division here in Vilnius is still on a good footing, as its equipment would have taken a longer period of time to store after the winter exercise. General Sevres just reported in, he can have it operational within 10 hours,” replied General Rossovossky.

“Not good enough,” retorted General Ornem.

“The 2nd and 18th Panzer Grenadier Brigades based here in Vilnius are still coming into their bases. I can have them out and marching south within 2 hours. It will take at least that much time to get them re-supplied and their AFVs fueled up,” General Michevsky stated, indicating their positions on the tactical board.

Ornem eyed one of the sigils. “What about this unit…the 3rd Light at Salcininkai?”

“That regiment has been alerted,” replied Michevsky. “Colonel Braum has reported that he will try his best to hold them off. I don’t know how much he can do, but we are lucky that its winter. The land around the main Lina-Vilnius road is practicably impossible to cross with large amounts of vehicles. The snow drifts alone are enough to force most traffic to stick to the road. So for the moment we are dealing will only one bridgehead into our territory. Other units along the border are being sent out alerts to become active and contest any attempts to cross the border.”

“Is General Kalinsky being prepped?”

“2nd Army is being prepped as we speak sir,” replied Rossovossky. “General Kalinsky however reports that the entire army cannot be ready except within the next four to six days. At most he can have an armored division ready to attack, in two days.”

“So it’s a waiting game…” mumbled Ornem, pissed that he couldn’t do anything to immediately halt the BHR attack. He glared up at the other two officers.

“I want the Luftwaffe flying sorties against that armored column around the clock. I want all Northern Air Groups to go active. If I don’t have air superiority by morning then I will be most pissed off.”

“Yes sir.”

Utena Air Force Base | 10:15 P.M.

Ten newly painted A-10 Thunderbolts sat on the tarmac with their engines roaring as their twin massive turbines came to glorious life. Pilots sat prepping their flight systems and checking to make sure their individual weapon configurations were still the same. A large silver shield with a black eagle painted in the center was across the side of each A-10.

“All wings report in,” the pilot in the lead A-10 said into his radio. The other nine pilots replied in a some-what less than military-esque way.

“Big-daddy gonna get another metal, reporting in,” said the last.

“Alright guys,” said the Wing Leader. “We’re going to tear ass on some BHR boys who think its fun to take a little stroll into the Duchy with a T-72. We’re going to repeat that little number all night. Flight Group 8 will cover us with their Eurofighters. Just like us, they’ll be up there all night. We switch off and rotate to the next wing at 2 A.M. I’ve been told by the base commander that if we don’t nail these guys, then Major General Ornem will have our asses on a f*cking silver platter. So stay tight and get the job done.”

All across the Duchy’s northern province of Lithuania, Eurofighters rose from air bases out of reach from BHR air bases and worked their way south to contest the air. The 4 groups of A-10 and other light ground attack planes made strafing runs against the large lumbering BHR column, 16,000 lbs of bombs from each landing amidst the oncoming, unforeseen enemy in hastily geared attacks. GAU chain guns bled dry as they rained a hail of lead down upon the BHR army. Eurofighters swept over the sky, in teams, taking out what enemy air craft they could.

Two grenadier brigades prepared to march south, an armored division on the heel of their preparation. And a sole regiment defiantly standing alone in the small town of Salcininkai, ten miles from the BHR-Duchy border.

Salcininkai | 10:20

The pair of soldiers lay on their stomachs, just on the top incline of the hill that looked down a fair stretch of the Lina-Vilnius highway. Air craft roared overhead and they could here the concussion and tale tell signs of strafing runs happening. However none of them were happening close enough to deal with the enemy close to the town. A pair of T-72s with infantry mounted on them were rumbling down the road less than 600 meters away.

One of them raised a finger to his throat mike. “Lieutenant, this is Randal. We’ve got two tanks and what looks like a platoon of infantry right up the road coming in fast. We can see more head lights behind.”

“Your estimate?” inquired the lieutenant.

“I’d say an armored company at least.”

“Alright.”

Spread out amidst the snowy woodland around the road laid a company of the 3rd Light Infantry Regiment. They wore their winter white camouflage and extra packs of ammunition. Four soldiers sighted down their MG3s as the lead tank started to pass them. A dozen others readied the RPG-29s that were being readied on their shoulders. The 1st lieutenant, Dan Karl, picked up his own RPG-29 and aimed it at the lead tank. “All units fire upon my signal.”

Without another word Lieutenant Karl stood up, took aim, and fired the rocket propelled grenade into the side of the T-72s turret. Almost immediately afterwards four MG3 roared to life, the heavy machine guns mowing down enemy infantry. G41 rifles joined in with their staccato fire. More RPG rounds impacted against the tanks.

Just as quickly as the attack began, the soldiers disappeared into the brush around them. Fading away and taking their gear with them as the BHR infantry were coming up from behind the two ruined forward tanks. Burning corpses littered the road. A sniper team, on the hill overlooking, took out a few officers and a medic as the infantry streamed into the fields beside the road. Confusion reigned for a short time.

As the BHR troops searched more and more they found nothing except expended rounds or ammunition casing and snow prints that were quickly being covered by the snow. Until they reached the very outskirts of the town Colonel Braum had ordered the 1st and 2nd companies from 1st battalion to make quick attacks on the flanks of the BHR troops, to use their knowledge of the terrain against them. The rest of the regiment was preparing hasty road blocks throughout the town and preparing for the onslaught to come.

It was going to be a tough fight.

Buried deep inside of the Ministry of Intelligence, satellite feeds from over Europe beamed down live-action footage of the war between The Farmboys of Bull Horns Rule and the Grand Duchy of Thrashia. Based on what had been witnessed, the Bull Hornians had launched a pre-emptive, successful surprise attack against Thrashian airbases and border posts. Counterattacks ensued and now the war was quickly becoming one instead of a single-side rout.

The nearest Layartebian military assets to the area were stationed in Germany, France, and Norway. These were foreign bases that the Layartebian military operated and, given the close proximity of them to the conflict, they were put on a state of heightened alert, even though few expected the conflict to expand beyond that of a local one. The responses of the European states would be fourthcoming but, until that came, the Layartebians wouldn't be caught with their pants down. Unlike the Thrashians, who seemingly did not have the capabilities to detect the incoming attacks at long enough range to respond, all Layartebian bases were equipped with state-of-the-art defensive systems. This included mobile anti-aircraft units, phased array radars, and a connection to the entire Layartebian Air Defense Network, which had large, overlapping fields of detection. Satellites provided what they could as well.

There was some risk though to Layartebian shipping in the area. A pair of Layartebian warships, a single Unforgiven class cruiser and a Dnalkrad class air defense frigate were transiting the Baltic Sea, coming out of a routine port call in Finland. They were well within range of Thrashian aircraft and land based missiles, which made the crews very nervous. The Empire had no ties with either nation but they didn't know if the Thrashians had somehow gotten the idea into their head that the Empire had something to do with what was happening. The transit of these two warships, whose firepower alone could level the Thrashian capital in a single blow was a mere coincidence. The captains hoped the Thrashians would see it that way but, just to be safe, they were on high alert.

Salcininkai | 10:20

Private Rafael Light was crouching down on a tank. Snow was falling, all was peaceful, an RPG round exploded, taking out the lead tank, he jumped of grabbing his AK-74. He aimed at a man with a RPG pointed at a tank, he fired 5 rounds, blood went everywhere, the man fell to the ground. "Ahh... I've been hit!" A man yelled from near the damaged tank. Rafael jumped up, ran over to him and pulled him into the ditch. A-10's roared overhead, T-72's were being eliminated at exponential rates.

The SU-27's were refueled, and they took off again, over Salcininkai a transmission came over, "Targets acquired, multiple Eurofighters, feel free to engage." The SU-27's scattered, rose, and dove down on the Eurofighter pilots.

In the air | 12:10 A.M.

“2-5 this is 2-1 their on my tail!”

The Eurofighter Typhoon sped through the night sky at extreme speeds. Following closely were two Su-27s, firing away with their machine guns. Shadowed valleys and hollow landscapes sped below like a movie screen in fast-forward mode.

“Copy that 2-1, keep coming to point bravo and then pull a ‘line backer’ on them,” replied 2-5.

The Typhoon sped around the corner of a mountain and dived low. A normal fighter other than the typhoon wouldn’t have been able to do it at nearly 1.2 Mach speeds. However the typhoon was made for such maneuverability. The fighter ripped upwards like a shooting star, the Su-27s just coming around the corner. They saw his rise and made to follow.

“Shit I’ve got missile lock!” said 2-1. Two missiles launched from the trailing Su-27s. “Launching ECM.”

With a crack and fizzle a large burst of flares and other diversionary debris launched. Both missiles curved off their original tracks and exploded harmlessly against small metal flares. “Coming into point bravo 2-5.” The typhoon reached cloud level and then leveled his plane off, shooting away. Like desperate phantoms the pair Su-27s followed.

“Where are you 2-5!?”

In answer one of the Su-27s exploded. An MBDA Meteor missile tore through the fuselage of the fighter and exploded within its frame, turning it into a ball on expanding shrapnel and gas.

“Fuck me!” was all 2-1 could say. He imagined the other Su-27s reply was more explicit. Two more Typhoons appeared through the cloud bursts on the tail of the Su-27. The pilot was obviously smart because he went into a dive and fell down towards the earth out of the clouds. “Do a barrel-role,” said 2-5.

All three Typhoons spun like tops on their center axis and dove down through the cloud at dynamic angles. Literal angels of death come to metallic life. Below them, speeding as fast as its engine could take it was the remaining Su-27.

“Missiles locked on,” said 2-3, the wingman for 2-5. “And away they go!”

Two more MBDA Meteor missiles raced forward like lances of flame, a promise of a quick and fiery death. The Su-27 attempted to dodge but it was taken between its jets, exploding into another ball of bright flame and shrapnel.

“Woot!” shouted 2-1.

“Next time Jurgen, make sure you don’t fly into the wrong combat zone,” replied 2-5.

“Yeah,” added 2-3. “Or else you could end up like—.”

2-3 was cut off from his radio as his fighter was suddenly torn out of the sky. Both 2-1 and 2-5 reacted instinctively and maneuvered away while launching ECMs. It saved them as more missiles appeared. Three more Su-27s were coming in.

“Flight Command this is Group 2 leader, we’ve got another bunch of goblins up here. Requesting a little extra bang for the boom sticks.”

“Copy that 2 Leader. Group 3 just took down a flight of goblins west of you. They’re coming in hot as hellfire.”

“Affirmative. We’ll hold them off until then Command. 2 Leader out.”

The fighter group leader rose into the clouds with his new wingman. Both he and 2-1 checked their radar detection screens. The Su-27s would be at a disadvantage in the night and clouds, but not by much. “Alright 2-1. We split and come in from the flank.” The pilot pressed a button on his dash and the calming and thrilling beats of Drowning Pool filled his cockpit. “Ahhh, now that’s better.”

The three Su-27s caught up to the two Typhoons and were just getting a lock when at the drop of a dime, they broke off in different directions at extreme angles, ones that the Su-27s would be crazy to try and copy. So they did the only thing they could do. Follow as best as possible. Two fighters broke right, the third left. When they broke out of the cloud all they found was empty air. “What the—,”

2-1 came barreling down from on high. As soon as he had left cloud cover he’d risen up by a few hundred meters before circling back to make a dive perpendicular to the exit point the Su-27s were making. Missiles launched. One fighter was hit; the other’s ECM distracted its missile and broke off.

“That evened the odds a little,” cheered 2-1.

“Don’t get cocky just because you got one,” said 2-5. He appeared on 2-1s side of the cloud cover. “I’m working on my sixth.”

Both of the Su-27s formed up again and came around for another pass. “Hey boss, just so we’re clear with each other…I’m out of missiles.”

“Same here,” replied 2-5 dryly.

Suddenly out of the cloud cover came four more Typhoon fighter craft. They each fired off a missile into the flank of the oncoming Su27s and blew them to small durasteel balls of flame.

“Thanks 4-5,” said 2-5.

“Made you shit your pants eh?” replied 4-5.

“Well I wouldn’t say that but I do need a new flight suit.”

All over Thrashian air space the fighter groups of the Duchy’s Luftwaffe was using its more highly skilled pilots and more maneuverable planes to bring down the enemy. Anti-aircraft teams were finally being deployed. Patriot missile systems were being revamped in their algorithms to help distinguish better between the Eurofighters and the enemy, though more than a few cases of friendly fire happened.

Six SU-27s flew at mach 2.34 at 60,700 feet, their mission was to redeem the death of their brethren. They located the Eurofighters and swept down with deadly force, "Thundercat-1 this is Pheonix-1, Permission to engage."

Thundercat-1 swept down onto the tail of one of the Eurofighters, firing the main gun, bullets ripped through the turbofan, destroying it, it burst into flames and exploded. The SU-27s then proceeded to engage with the other fighters.

Priority: High
Recipient: The Farmboys of Bull Horns Rule
Origin: Empire of Layarteb - Ministry of Foreign Affairs
Classification Level: Secure
Subject: War Against Thrashia

The Empire finds it unsettling that the Farmboys of Bull Horns Rule have seen it necessary to invade and attack the Grand Duchy of Thrashia. A peaceful state, the Grand Duchy of Thrashia shows promise to a region that is in turmoil following the collapse of the Fourth Reich. It is our hope that your differences can be resolved peacefully. The Empire took great pride in defending the Fourth Reich and it is heartbreaking to see fighting where peace existed not more than a few years prior. We urge the Farmboys of Bull Horns Rule to reconsider their actions.

Sincerely,
The Minister of Foreign Affairs

Classification Levels

Standard: Standard classification is the normal level of encryption. It is equivalent to the standard levels of encryption seen on most secure e-mail clients.

Confidential: Confidential classification is a higher level of encryption than "Standard" but it is not heavily encrypted. It is used mostly for flash traffic to foreign countries and requires some additional decoding time. It uses 512-bit RSA encryption methods and has several key ciphers that change unpredictably.

Secure: Secure communiques use 1024-bit RSA encryption and several key ciphers within them that change unpredictably to ensure that message traffic is not hacked or decoded. Access to said messages would require heavy cracking software and significant resources but it is not "uncrackable." It can be a viable level through 2010.

Encrypted: Encrypted classification is the second highest level of classification. It is uses 2048-bit RSA encryption and multiple key ciphers within it to ensure that cracking it would take such a significant amount of time to accomplish that, should it be done, the message's usefulness would have already expired. Though anything is crackable, because of the methods employed, this level is often considered "uncrackable" by current capabilities. To ensure revolving protecting, ciphers and encryption algorithms will change unpredictably. This level is sufficient until 2030.

Maximum: Maximum classification is the highest level of classification available. It uses 3072-bit RSA encryption and multiple key ciphers that change unpredictably. It can provide protection past 2030.

Experimental: Currently not a fully recognized level, experimental denotes a category using 15360-bit RSA encryption and multiple key ciphers that change unpredictably. It is not in full operational use as of yet.
