The Executive Officer looked worried. "Captain, the Isans and Alliance have both landed forces. The Isans are on the far side of the planet, and the Alliance have, once again, landed forces outside the Temple."
Winterfire considered. If he sent Rose and Sanderson down now, they would be running though a huge battle. But if he waited, the winning side would be on watch for landing NK, Imperial or Republic troops. Better to get though the chaos of fighting than to try to sneak though. "Are the two ready?"

Sanderson and Rose stood on the deck, waiting. Sanderson was fully outfitted in a Biohazard suit, while Rose wore a airtight black suit normally used by Black Guards that one had lended to her. It would protect her from the Imitators, but the problem was spilling her blood. Scans had assured them that the interior of the Temple was somehow entirely uninfected by Imitator cells, making it clean. With a Biohazard suit, Sanderson would never be able to pry it open and slice her skin.

Rose seemed herself...so far. A technician brought over the book, giving it to Sanderson, who stowed it in a backpack compartment on the back of his suit. There was no chance of it falling out, but if Sanderson was struck down there was little chance of being able to retrieve it.

Captain Winterfire shook his head, facing her. "Captain, with all due respect, I cannot impose upon you to risk the lives of any more of your crew. Let them go in alone, a larger party will simply attract more attention. However, if you can use your ship's weaponry to target and destroy any undead or Alliance forces close to the First Officer and First Lieutenant that would be greatly appreciated."

Megumi had shuttled back quickly to her ship and working with the weapons officer they had made the adjustments to both forward phasers.

They were now precise tight beams and with the Neo Kirisuban targeters they could pick out a precise area of the planet surface.

On the screen they could see the battle still raging the undead getting the upper hand the longer it raged. Rose and Sanderson would have to go soon and as agreed they'd start shooting once the signal was given.

Sanderson nodded. "Rose," he said, long having abandoned addressing her by her rank, "I just want you to know...if either of us die, or we're not successful..." his voice cracked, "that I l-"
Over in the shielded control room the technician flipped a switch and pulled a trigger. Rose and Sanderson were evenloped in a sheath of bright light, and then they were plunged into the chaos of battle.

The others on the bridge could see on the view screen the battle Rose and Sanderson had just transported into and them appearing on the surface.

Blasts of tight beam phasers lanced into the hoplites, undead kitsune and alliance marines with deadly accuracy. As these beams continued a way was being gradually cleared for the away team.

Rose listened to Sanderson with anticipation then they were beamed down into chaos.

The Imitators were still fighting the Undead and it was a rather one sided battle. The Imitators weapons had no effect on the Undead while they were happily slashing away with swords and hurling javelins. Rose ducked just in time to avoid one of the massive flying spears and looked at Sanderson,
"Shall we move?" She called out.

Rather annoyed that what he was attempting to say had gotten screwed up so badly, Sanderson just nodded. "Let's-" He sidestepped a Alliance lizard-like Marine that had been sent flying by a Hoplite blow, belly torn open to spray oddly colored innards everywhere. "Go!" he yelled, and there was the sound like the universe tearing as twin beams of light, colors wildly changing from deep blue to bright pink to flashing yellow raked the battle around them, carving a path though the undead warriors and Alliance solders to the Temple. Sanderson, gun cradled in his arms, ran with Rose right in front of him though the close-quarters, hectic fight.

Rose closed her eyes and ran as well, using Sanderson as her support, the battle was terrible, she had never been through anything like it. Never so much devastation and so much horror. The Alliance were being butchered by those who could not be killed. Then she was inside and she could relax,

three days later at what was the mouth of the Cave were two dead clones and Wolf who lay with his back against a tree

"Doctor assemble a team and get on your containment suits. You're on a rescue mission now" she ordered.

Doctor Hatamato was 22 years old and pretty just like the rest of her shipmates. Acknowledging the order she called security asking for two armed guards.

Ten minutes later a Neo Kirisuban shuttle was leaving the Empress Keiko and descending towards the co-ordinates of the distress call.

Dr Yuko Hatamoto had two samurai with her and a shuttle pilot who was also suited up. Imitator cells had reached this part of the planet and they weren't taking any chances as they touched down. They could always be isolated in space since the bio suits they used were the normal space suits with their own oxygen supply.

The armed team had their pistols drawn as the doctor used her tricorder to track the lone life sign. Then she seen her patient as she hurried the team along.

ooc: The samurai have the two swords as well as phaser pistols. The Doctor is unarmed and the pilot has a dagger and a hand phaser. The space suits are bright red and of the hard shell variety.

So slightly over three hours later after Yuko had handed control of the sickbay to her two nurses she headed to her quarters to get ready.

She got a shower and after a small meal decided what to wear since she was off duty.

She chose a red kimono with a gold obi and her tanto dagger hung on her right hip since she was left handed. She also could have carried a pistol but didn't.

So adding some makeup and perfume and checking everything was perfect headed back to Wolf's cabin.

Pressing the door chime she waited for his reply and was certainly ready for fun.

So slightly over three hours later after Yuko had handed control of the sickbay to her two nurses she headed to her quarters to get ready.

She got a shower and after a small meal decided what to wear since she was off duty.

She chose a red kimono with a gold obi and her tanto dagger hung on her right hip since she was left handed. She also could have carried a pistol but didn't.

So adding some makeup and perfume and checking everything was perfect headed back to Wolf's cabin.

Pressing the door chime she waited for his reply and was certainly ready for fun.

Sherk had survived the horror of the battlefield, the place was sprawled with Alliance troops. Rose continued to follow behind Sanderson, into the empty corridors until, they reached the first hall of many. Like the others this one was littered with skeletons in both the Kitsune armour and their invader's armour. They were no different to the hundreds of Dead they had already passed.

Even on a normal working day accidents could still happen on a ship and towards the end of the shift there had been an accident in engineering. The containment field had stopped the ship imploding but there had been injuries.

Yuko Hatamoto had been one of them along with two engineers as she had dragged out a wounded crew member. The doctor now needed medical help as she had severe plasma burns and an unhealthy dose of coolant in her lungs.

The three crew members were unconcious with Yuko's life signs the lowest. She was being tended by her nurses who did the best they could seeing their colleague like this. However her bio readings were slightly off and they were checking these.

Sanderson looked about wildly, but all he saw was the same dusty skeletons that had always been there. Not even rotting flesh still clung to the bones, and no Imitator, Xiscapan, Alversian or Neo Kirisubon soldiers had entered this chamber. He moved back to stand beside her, staring at Rose. "Do you...feel alright?" he asked lamely.

Rose but her hand up to silence Sanderson as she knelt beside one of the skeletons. She was looking at him with tears in her eyes. It was a male, about her age if not younger. He lay with his eyes open as if he was just lying on the ground, his pupils were dull and his mouth slightly open to reveal a small pool of red blood. A massive cut across his cheek indicated why he lay here amongst the others.

All Sanderson would see was a dusty skeleton with a scrape across his cheekbone.

"You poor boy," She muttered, almost to herself, "You poor, poor boy. To end up here" She shook her head in sorrow, "Why?"

Sanderson didn't know what to do. Rose was obviously being affected by the nature of her possession and proximity to the Temple, but how to stop it? The only answer was that of the book, and the ritual. Grabbing her arm, Sanderson pulled gently but firmly. "It's too late now," he said gruffly, "we can't do anything for them. We have to keep moving."

"Let's go" She said sadly still looking all around at the people she could see, as opposed to skeletons,
"Why did you have to die?" She asked no one.

"Why did you have to die?" Sanderson shrugged, thinking the question was directed at him. "Way of the universe. No one here had to die, but because this-guy-did-this or our-god-is-better or you've-insulted-our-sacred-traditions a war started and guys who probably would have met in a bar and bought each other a drink are trying to kill each other."

Rose looked at him,
"Why did my people have to die?" She asked, her voice changing with the last word into something, deeper and darker. Her eyes were also starting to go dull.

Then she gasped in pain and fell to her knees clutching her stomach,
"It's trying!" She cried, "It's taking over! I can't stop it!"

Sanderson snarled and bodily picked Rose up in his arms, her diminutive frame resting on the armor, head cradled in one of his hands. Carrying her like this was safer than on his back, but it meant he couldn't use his Repeater unless he put her down. Still, if all went well and he made it to the center chamber, he wouldn't have to use his weapons. Holding Rose close, trying to impart some personal comfort and strength despite the armor, he sprinted though the hall towards the tunnel leading to the interior.

Rose nestled in Sanderson's gasp, whimpering and taking deep ragged breaths. It was pain like she had never felt before, like someone else wanted to burst from her stomach which was technically true. Why had she opened that book? Why had she been so curious?

She looked up at Sanderson with tears running down her face,
"I...I...lo..." Then she fell silent and seemed to go to sleep.

Sanderson stared down at her, wishing he could take his helmet off. "What? You what..." Realization dawned. For a moment he actually stopped running, he was so stunned. Then he started up again, looking at Rose's face for a moment before looking ahead of himself once again. Sanderson skidded into the main chamber and looked around wildly for the altar. There. Sanderson climbed the crumbling stone steps, unbuckling Rose's armor as he did so.

Then a javelin flew from the darkness and bounced off the steps in front of Sanderson, several Hoplites emerged from behind columns weapons drawn and ready. Staring up with eyeless sockets.

Sanderson stared at the Hoplites and, slowly and carefully, lay Rose down on the floor, careful to keep in front of her prone form. Again moving slowly and deliberately he took the book out from it's case on his back and lifted Rose onto his back, the book held out in front of him. He had a hunch, and if it worked, he wouldn't have to fight the undead. If he was wrong, then he was dead, and so was Rose.

The Hoplites continued to advance on his regardless of the book. They were now at the bottom of the staircase while Sanderson was at the top. They were not running but they weren't stopping either.

Sanderson had no time to get out his Heavy Repeater, and he wasn't sure if it would work against them anyway, so he did what he could: He turned, flung the book onto the altar and dumped Rose next to it. Opening the book to the pre-marked page, he peeled back her armor to expose the flesh of her shoulder. Taking out his combat knife with a nervous glance over his shoulder at the Hoplites, which were halfway up the stairs, he cut into the soft white flesh, blood welling up and spilling onto the pages of the book.

Where Rose's blood had hit the page, it seemed to swirl into blood red writing, forming words in Old Tongue before vanished. The Hoplites also seemed to just fade away as they drew closer and closer to the steps. The ancient city also just faded away. One moment it was there and the next it wasn't. It was a Ghost City and it had gone to rest, along with it's inhabitants.

Rose opened first one eye then the other and stared up at Sanderson,
"I...I..." She stuttered, "I can't see them" She said, referring to the dead.

Sanderson was panting heavily as the blood-stained knife clattered to the floor, and he could only nod as he out of the corner of his eye the undead Hoplites fade away into nothing. He was still hunched over Rose from where he had cut her with the knife, and Sanderson stared into her eyes for a long moment. Then, slowly, he removed his helmet, the hiss of compressed air sounding as it depressurized. He set it on the ground and leaned closer to Rose, until their faces were inches from each other, yellow eye to yellow eye. "I love you," he whispered, and kissed her.

"Sir! The city and all the undead have disappeared! They must have been successful!" called out the Scanning Officer. Winterfire allowed a grin to break over his face as the crew cheered throughout the Inescapable. "Well done, Sanderson," he murmured before turing to Captain Denison. "I told you my First Lieutenant wouldn't let us done," he looked to Captain Megumi. "And good job with those lasers."

On board the Empress Keiko

Megumi had kept a visual comm link open while their weapons fire bought the team time. Now she could see the temple fading away and returning presumably underground.

"Thank you Captain" she replied her tactical officer having ceased firing once she ran out of targets.

Still the crystals on this world still looked unreachable.

Rose listened to the words in a stupor. She loved him, no doubt about it and now it seemed that he reciprocated the feelings. Then she felt his lips close on hers and she flinched under the touch. Then she relaxed and enjoyed the warmth it seemed to give her. She threw her arms around his shoulders and continued to kiss him.

Denison sighed in relief as the structures disappeared one by one. There were no more dead Hoplites and no more flying javelins. It seemed that Rose was safe and they had accomplished their goal. He gave a smile as his entire ship erupted into cheers as the news was spread.

Sherk helped Marry up, as did the other Marines as they began to get the hell out of dodge, the Medusa would hopefully beam them up, as this planet was going to get attacked by anti-imitator gas.

OCC: if you kill the imitators that means all you will have left is a rotting planet and water.

"Sir, forty-nine Imitator cargo ships have entered the system. They're messaging in Xiscapian I.D. codes from the Third Assault Fleet."
"Ah," said Winterfire, relaxing, "that must be the detachment from the Greal situation with our chemicals. Order them to saturate the planet immediately."
The Forty-nine ships banked downward into the atmosphere. A thick, gray fog poured from them, a special chemical agent specifically designed to kill Imitator cells but leave anything non-Imitator untouched. The side affect, however, was that it made anyone who went in it somewhat light headed. To Imitators, however, it was utterly lethal from the first breath of it.

Sanderson couldn't believe they were alive, that they'd made it though, that he'd done it. The Temple was perhaps not the most romantic of areas he could imagine, but it was good enough for him. Suddenly he heard something coming from outside the Temple. He cocked his head and listened closely, then relaxed when he realized what he'd heard. "Transports, with the chemicals," he murmured, turning his attention back to Rose. "That stuff takes a few hours to be put into effect, so I guess we're...stuck here, for a while..." He reached down and began to unbuckled the rest of her armor, noticing that the cut had miraculously healed over and was now just a small, pink scar. The rest of the armor peeled away as Sanderson's own began to slide off...

Sherk and Marry looked up as did he other marines, they made a full sprint towards the temple, if they were lucky they might get inside and be safe from the fumes that would rot them away from existance.

Winterfire turned back to his two fellow Captains. "Well, our problem is solved," he said in satisfaction. "The Imitators are gone, and the spirits seem to be pacified. With any luck we'll have mining crews and scientist teams on this planet within days." And I'll have a nice promotion and all the benefits that come with that. I'll have to make sure Sanderson is commended for his work.

Denison nodded,
"I was hoping that we might have learnt something from this episode about disturbing the dead but I am sure you know best" He stated before looking around at a variety of consoles,
"Do you know where the Lieutenant Commanders have gone?" He asked frowning, "I can't find them on scanners"

The team stumbled as the fumes hit them, they all fell to the ground almost instantly, Sherk tapped a grenade to his hand as he died, Marry's hand slowly slid down the entrance of the temple before she went silent.

Winterfire shook his head. "No idea, last we knew they were still in the Temple, and they won't be able to exit without side-affects for approximently two and a half hours now. As for the dead," he looked down at the planet sadly, "some things are more important. We may leave this planet be, for now, but we will find a way to get those crystals, even if have to kill every Hoplite again to do so."

And what Kash did to my innocent, defensive pilot was at least equally unforgivable. The universe has a way of making sure what goes around, comes around, as it were.

OCC: remeber, I had a doctor that actually did the dissection, but Kash was more or less an assistant.

Seeing the cargo ships start to spray the planet meant her engineers lives weren't lost in vain. They did die for something after all.

Winterfire shook his head. "There's no way to immediatly do so. The chemical was designed to penetrate even heavy armor and fortified, shielded bunkers, to make sure no Imitators could possibly survive. To sentiants it acts as a sort of poison gas, making any landing party we could send too light-headed to even speak. And after what happend to the last ones, I dare not send down more robots." He shrugged. "Besides, they're safe. The undead have vanished, as have all sentiant Imitator lifeforms, and all the gas still has to do is uinfect the rest of the planet."

At last Sanderson and Rose emerged from the Temple into the already fading light of the planet, now cleared of Imitators and gas. Sanderson noticed with distaste and a primal sense of satisfaction the heap of dead Imitators along the Temple wall, fists clenched and faces contorted in death. "Good riddance," he muttered, hand finding Rose's.
Inescapable...
"Sir."
Winterfire hit the communications button on his desk, alert now from the slight doze he had been having, fallen asleep in his office while making a report back to the Empire. "What is it?"
"Captain, the chemical has entirely dispersed and the planet is clean of Imitator cells. We have detected two bio signs that match the DNA and I.D. scans of APN Executive Officer Rose and our own First Lieutenant Sanderson."
Winterfire nodded to himself. "Very good. Beam them up and give the First Lieutenant leave. I will collect his report later. Also send a transmission to Captain Denison on the Armorai that we have his Executive Officer. From this time you have the bridge until further notice."

Rose squeezed his hand tightly,
"You have to feel a little sorry for them" She replied sadly, "They were living, breathing beings afterall."

Armorai

"Captain, the Inescapable has just sent us a message. They have Lieutenant Commander Rose" An Ensign called.

"Very good" Denison sighed and looked over the planet, so much death and destruction and for what? A few crystals? He had no doubt that was what had caused the fall of the previous city, their power. Now it seemed they had been raided again.

With the news that Sanderson and Rose were safe Megumi breathed a sigh of relief.

This had been supposed to be a simple survey mission to give her scientists practice and they had ended fighting a ground a space war once the AIW fleet turned up.

Now she had a memorial service to perform and left the bridge in her XO's hands.

As many of the crew that were free assembled in the mess hall. The others could her Megumi's words through the intercoms.

She gave a speech to her crew first praising the engineers who had stayed behind once they were infected by the Alliance bio weapon and went down fighting. She also set this up as a reminder that they were warriors and a good death was as important as a good life.

Then the fallen engineers friends spoke and when everybody had their say silence fell as they remembered the people they had lost.

A simple ceremony since there was no bodies to bury but one the crew needed to have.

"Yeah, well I feel a lot more sorry for them," Sanderson jerked his thumb over his shoulder to the Temple. "Poor bastards fought too hard to just die."
Inescapable...
The two were beamed once again into the hanger, then Rose, with Sanderson giving her a last embrace and ways to contact him again, was relayed back to the Armorai. Sanderson walked back to his quarters, alone, shrugging off the talk of awards for his bravery and invitations to little parties to be held on the Destroyer in wake of the fighting. He needed time to think, quite plainly. One thing was for sure, though: He would be seeing Rose again...
And in his own quarters, Captain Winterfire sat deep in thought.

Back in her office Krystal had only just returned from Old Xiscapia, and was leafing though the small mountain of reports and letters that had piled up in her absence. There she found a brief report from Captain Winterfire of the XIW Inescapable on the subject of continued operation on the newly discovered world:
Our mission to construct mines for the extraction of Guilda crystals in the Ripple System on planet 48xb has been indefinitely postponed due to our discovery there. The uncovering of ancient Xiscapian ruins (see attachment C and related information) provoked a strong negative response from apparent supernatural forces which still reside there. At this time I believe it would be ill-advised to make another incursion and risk the wrath of the defenses of what has now been commonly named Terracropolis. However, the impact on the historical, religious and scientific communities by the phenomenon would be enormous, and perhaps a key to unlocking another part of the long odyssey from the Old world to New. Therefore I propose a team of specially trained Xiscapians to uncover the secrets and history of Terracropolis remotely, not via probes and drones but though the access of the mind and spirit to the surface. Our resident scientist aboard the Inescapable, one Mr. Oan, believes he knows a way to do so. However, I admit it is not my place to say how to run things, and humbly ask that those in command of such matters take my words into consideration...

It took a few days before the injured samurai on board the Inescapable was released from the sickbay but then the 'Empress Keiko' was about to depart.

Captain Ito sent her farewells to Captain Winterfire and Captain Dennison and then they left the Terracropolis system. They couldn't use the planet but there was still potential for a starbase to be sited here.

However this ship to continue her mission. Another ship could give them four new engineers and a new CMO but the voyages of the 'Empress Keiko' would continue.

Rose took one last look at Sanderson before she was beamed to the Armorai. She instantly headed straight to her quarters. She took one long look in the mirror and sighed. No sign of possession. She was her own person again. She went into the shower and relaxed for the first time in weeks. Even as she thought of it, she couldn't say she hated it. Her mind kept drifting to the time she had spent with Sanderson in the Temple and she had to admit, being possessed was one of the best things that had ever happened to her.

APNHQ, Illesia City
Ashe was sitting up late and still shifting through the paperwork that flooded her desk. It came from all corners of the Alversian Republic, Ship reports, skirmish reports and personel reports. Her eyes were heavy yet she forced herself to keep going. Then she saw a report from a Captain outside Alversian Space, a Captain Denison by the looks of it. She skimmed over the report, and gave a small sad nod at it's contents. She would read the rest of it tomorrow and then make a judgement based on it. For now, she was happy to let it lie.
