Nineteen and still just a mere boy. This boy paced around the room, but stopped to look out a nearby window. What he saw was Lake Neusiedl, one of the most beautiful landmarks in Canadstein. But the boy could not see that. Obliviously something preoccupied his mind. The thought had been tearing away at him for the last six months. His father, King Albert IV had noticed the boy's health change and sent him to one of the rural homes. For the last three months the boy had resided in Mayerling Hunting Lodge. Most of the time he was alone, but occasionally his family would visit, though the boy preferred the silence and peace.
The boy suddenly stopped and returned to a nearby desk. He picked up a letter, then started to pace again. Reading the letter over, the boy stopped yet again. His eyes closed. It looked as though he was in pain. The letter he held in his hands was a copy of the original. The original had been sent this morning, though the letter had been written months ago. He had tried many a times to send the letter, but the boy never had a enough strength to send it. See the letter was to someone the boy loved, but he did not know for sure if she loved him. See this is what had preoccupied his mind. He did not want to make himself look like a fool and be rejected. That was the last thing he needed.
The letter had been sent to Empress Anastasia II of Neo-Ixania. The boy had written an invitation to her and her sister, Catherine, to visit him in Canadstein. He had met her at her gala. During the course of the night the boy had fallen in love with Anastasia. But while he was there he had seen the other suitors. They were far more handsome than he was. How could Aanastasia, a beautiful flower, ever love the boring boy?
The invitation was never sent until yesterday – some how the boy had gathered the strength and sent it. He had regretted it and wanted to disappeared, but now he had accepted it. Though now he was going to have to wait for a reply, if that ever happened. A part of the boy hoped that he letter got lost, but the other part wanted it to arrive to Anastasia.
The silence was broken in the room, but a soft knock on the door. Another young man entered the room. It was the boy's younger brother, Rudolf. Rudolf walked up to the boy slowly, then grabbed his shoulder. The boy seemed frighten at first, but recognized his brother's hand.
"How about we go for a walk Nicholas? Some fresh air will do you some good." Rudolf said with a concerned look.
Nicholas nodded. He crumpled up the letter and threw it into a nearby waste bin, then followed his brother outside.

Anastasia could still remember the people who had been romantically interested in her; from Emperor Gnaeus of Belkaros to Emperor Heinrich of Achae-Ottonia. All of them had basically fallen in love with her or at least had plenty of feelings for the nineteen year old monarch but she had not decided on marriage yet; still living the life of a single and childless woman. One day, as she relaxed at her home, she recieved a letter from Prince Nicholas of Canadstein. She smiled when she read it; happy to know that she would be able to visit Canadstein. Packing some items for herself, she quickly found an avaliable plane to take her to Canadstein and she felt quite anxious to visit; it was nice, she thought, to meet a guest from the gala again. As she waited at the airport for her plane, she was thinking about Heinrich; the one suitor who seemed to be on her mind the most. If she thought about Nicholas, she'd also remember Catherine's constant talking about him; though she did decline that she had a crush on him when finally asked. Anastasia never really spoke about her love life; it was one of those private matters.
Eventually, she got into her private jet which would take her to Canadstein; luckily there was no sign of storms or any news of violent weather. As she took her seat by one of the many windows, Anastasia became instantly accustomed to being served by one of the flight attendants who brought her some snacks. It took a day or two to land in Canadstein; the plane gently landed on the runway. This would be one of those trips that Anastasia went on without her assistant; as Vladimir was on a vacation with his family.
Anastasia walked calmly out of the plane with her luggage and a smile on her face; immediately she began looking for the people awaiting her arrival; waiting to greet her and welcome her with open arms.

Nicholas felt a sense of a relief, when he heard that Anastasia accepted his invitation. But now he had to prepare for the arrival of Anastasia. For the next two days Nicholas got ready for her visit to make sure everything was perfect. He wanted to impress Anastasia, but Rudolf reminded him that to impress her, Nicholas just needed to be himself. Still that did not stop Nicholas preparing for her arrival.
Once the day came Nicholas wandered through the Lodge twenty times to make sure everything was in order, though he seemed fixated on Anastasia's room. Her room had a balcony, which had a beautiful view of Lake Neusiedl and the best place to see the sun slowly dip into the horizon. The funny thing is that Rudolf had to remind Nicholas when Anastasia was supposed to arrive. Nicholas started to laugh. He was so concentrated on making everything perfect that he had almost forgotten about picking up Anastasia.
The pair of men arrived at the airport thirty minutes before Anastasia's plane was to land. Well it wasn't really airport, but a simply runway. It wasn't meant for the public, so in essence it was only for the royal family. But it was the closest runaway to the Lodge. Before her arrival Nicholas retold Rudolf the events of the gala. But he mostly talked about Anastasia. Rudolf had asked that if Anastasia was the one. Nicholas seemed to think for a bit, but nodded. Their conservation was soon broken by an airplane in the distance.
Both men quickly stood upright and patiently waited for the plane to land. Nicholas' stomach started to churn. Thoughts were racing through his head as the plane landed and came closer. Would Anastasia still like him? What if she hated him? Nicholas shook his head to get rid of his thoughts.
When Anastasia walked out of the plane she would see two handsome men standing in front of BMW E65. She would not know the man next to Nicholas, who was Rudolf, but she could tell that he was Nicholas' brother. Many said that Rudolf was a younger version of Nicholas, but both could not see that. Both bothers walked up to Anastasia. Rudolf nodded toward her and took her luggage. Meanwhile Nicholas got on his knee and kissed her hand.
"Anastasia...I am so glad to see you again. This is my brother, Rudolf. Welcome to Canadstein."

"It is nice to be here in Canadstein and to meet your brother, Nicholas."
The Empress studied Rudolf briefly; immediately knowing that he was the brother of her host. Looking at him made her think about Catherine; because some people said that Catherine was a younger version of herself. With a smile, she greeted Rudolf before walking towards the vehicle. "I am sure you have already prepared my guest room for me; I am sure it will be both nice and furnished."
She examined the car for a moment before getting inside; making sure to take a window seat. As she looked out the window of the car, waiting for the chauffer to start driving, Anastasia thought about what she would see in Canadstein during her visit; she hoped it would be much.

Nicholas took Anastasia's hand and lead her to the car. Meanwhile Rudolf quickly loaded Anastasia's luggage into the back of the car. Though as the pair came closer to the car it came apparent that there was no chauffeur. Yes the royal family did have chauffeur's but neither Rudolf nor Nicholas cared for one. Mostly because Rudolf loved to drive.
"Only the best for the Empress of Neo-Ixania. We are going to stay at Mayerling Hunting Lodge, one of the older royal residents. The royal family mostly traveled out to hunt. But the lodge has a beautiful view of Lake Neusiedl. Actually your room over looks the lake and has one of the best views of the sunset." Nicholas said with a chuckle.
Nicholas escorted her to the car, then opened the door. Once she was securely inside, Nicholas got to the passenger side. Rudolf was actually in the driver's set, putting on some sunglasses, and started the car up once everyone was inside. Getting out of the runaway, they traveled down a two lane road. On both sides a majestic pine forest reined blanketed with a fresh white snow. Just the day before a snowstorm had passed through.
"Right now we are traveling through the Black Forest. It covers much of Northern Canadstein. I have spent much of the last six months here After my little world trip I decided to take a break. But living in a city was no break. Only fresh air and surroundings like this are a true break. Though that doesn't mean I haven't stopped studying. I plan on returning to college later this year for the fall semester. So what have you been up to?" asked Nicholas.

"I have been making new friends for myself and my nation; I've been studying, learning, working, and basically enjoying my life. My sister, Catherine is still in Alfegos while my brother, Alexander, is possibly in a relationship with a Delkoran princess; right now it looks like friendship to me. I still live in quiet solace in the Imperial Palace; eating and basically living there all alone. I must say that it is nice to be here in Canadstein; I have visited some nations so far and they all have been nice places to visit; all the hosts have been courteous and respectful. Yes; fresh air and surroundings like this are a true break; they can take us out of the harsh reality of life. As for college, I have already graduated and I plan to finish my studies in university; I am studying various subjects such as history, geography and political science; all of them, I think, are valuable to me. As the Empress, I seem to get special treatment from many people but I do not desire to graduate as a pampered lady; I want to graduate through my hard work and determination. After I graduate, I'll focus solely on my responsibilities as the Ixanian monarch."

"It sounds like that you have been one busy Empress. But it must be lonely to be away from your family. My family occasionally visits, which at the moment Rudolf is doing, though sometimes I prefer the silence. Then I am able to truly think. My mind is clear from distractions and all worries. It might sound silly, but it works for me." Miles replied.
Rudolf turned onto a one way road. On both sides tall pine trees stood, almost if on guard to protect the royal family. Traveling a little more they finally came upon the Mayerling Hunting Lodge. The lodge was not some gaudy European type palace, but a cabin. Okay not exactly a cabin, in size, but a cabin in design. The building fit right into the surroundings, unlike some other royal "hunting" lodges. This truly was a place to begin a hunt.
A keen looker would notice that the pine forest suddenly ended on the sides of the lodge. The lodge was built on a top of small cliff, that over looked Lake Neusiedl, but a natural staircase had been made to go down to the shores of Lake Neusiedl. A small dock had been built on the lake, along with a small boathouse.
Rudolf stopped the car and took of his sunglasses. He turned back around to Anastasia. "Welcome to Mayerling Hunting Lodge."
Meanwhile Nicholas had gotten out of the car and was opening Anastasia's door. His hand was held open, waiting for her's, while he looked down at her with a warm smile. "I hope you enjoy your stay here Anastasia."
While Nicholas was helping Anastasia out of the car, Rudolf had walked to the back to retrieve her luggage.

"I do visit my family when I have the chance; and vice versa. I cherish my strong relationship with my family and try my best to be there for them despite being the Empress of Ixania. Sometimes, I do prefer the quiet solace of my home but I do think about finding a consort for myself; however, I think that I'd want to stay in Ixania if I get married."

Anastasia smiled as she walked out of the car with Nicholas; childhood memories were still fresh in her mind as she studied the hunting lodge with her eyes calmly. "This looks like a nice place to stay, Nicholas."
Walking inside, Anastasia immediately broke away from Nicholas to get a look around; she kept the smile on her face as she walked. "Perhaps a tour of the lodge is in order, Nicholas?"

Rudolf scurried off inside the lodge with Anastasia's luggage to her room. It was time to leave Nicholas and Anastasia alone. He just hoped that Nicholas' heart didn't hurt after her visit.
After Rudolf had disappeared, Nicholas escorted Anastasia inside. Upon entering the main door of the lodge Nicholas and Anastasia could see the true grandeur of the lodge. The room they had just entered was the main seating room, which was circular in shape. It was very reminiscence of the old hunting lodges in the American Plains during the late 1800's. Everything was made of wood or had wood in it; the chairs, the floor, the ceiling, the tables, the walls. The walls were filled with portraits of the royal family, antique rifles, and various other artifacts. On the opposite side of the room was a massive fireplace, which at the current time had a massive roaring fire. A majestic wooden mantel adorned the fireplace and seemed to enhance it. The room simply screamed out rustic.
Taking his coat off, Nicholas looked around for a moment. This had been his room for the last six months and it showed. Scattered all over the tables were books and papers, though it was somewhat orderly. Nicholas did much of his studying and reading either here or his study. But it seemed as if he didn't pick up after himself.
"Sorry if its a little messy. Before you came I was studying."
As Anastasia broke from his grasp Nicholas watched the gracefully figure. She was simply breathtaking. Nicholas' glaze was fixed on her as she walked around the room.
"Yes a tour seems in order."
Nicholas walked up to her and retrieved her head. Walking down a hallway he stopped at one of the rooms. Entering it came apparent that it was a library. The library was a perfect picture of what anyone thought when they heard the word's private library. Massive bookshelves adorned all of the walls, except one which looked out to Lake Neusiedl. Occasionally a free space would be open to show off a painting or some kind of artifact, but the walls seemed to be filled with books. On each massive book shelve wall a rolling ladder accompanied it. Near the window, which was at the opposite side of where they were standing, laid a great wooden desk along with a rolling leather chair.
In front of the desk were a mixture of couches, tables, and chairs.
"This is the library. The royal family keeps some of it private collection here. Honestly I think some of the best books are kept here."
Nicholas released Anastasia from his grasp, so she could get a closer look. While Anastasia was busy looking Nicholas walked up to the bookcase to find a certain book. Pulling it from the book case, he walked back over Anastasia. Patiently he waited for Anastasia to say something.

Nicholas lead Anastasia over to the main desk, then he let her sit down. Producing from his back he rested it in front of Anastasia. The cover of the book was simply beautiful. "My favorite book would be the 1867 novel, Virtue and Vice by an Ixanian novelist named Alexander Sena; whose novels were focused around the experiences of human life. The novel follows the life of Zoe, a young woman who lives in poverty and how she struggles to rise from her unfortunate condition. I first read it when I was fourteen and I have always read it since then; I may be a wealthy monarch but I do care for those who cannot climb the ladder of social status well."
Anastasia smiled. "Ixanian literature varies from genre to genre; we have had some good writers and novelists in our people's history. If you ever come to Ixania again, I can show you some songs of the traveling bards; who would travel in the company of Ixanian knights to sing songs and tell stories."

Nicholas led the young Empress down a hallway. As they passed but each it came apparent that Nicholas wasn't going to show each room. No, that would take way too long. Plus Nicholas had a feeling that Anastasia might get bored. So he was only going to show her the "important" room to himself. But Nicholas did explain what each room held. It was just an assortment of a music room, another guest bedroom, a living room, and even a room filled entirely with maps. Walking past the rooms, Nicholas was obliviously leading her to the room at the end of the hall.
Nicholas stopped for a moment, then opened the door; once they were at the end of the hall. As the door opened it reveal a very masculine room, completely covered by dark some kind of dark wood. At one end of the room was a medium size fireplace, which currently had a fire going. But the thing that really stuck out was all the firearms, inside glass cases mounted on the walls. Nicholas extended his arm to the inside the room. Once Anastasia was inside he shut the door behind her.
"This is our weapon room. Some of these are gifts from other nations, but most of them were ordered by past Kings, to of course use for hunting." Nicholas said, as he went to a nearby case. He pulled out a rapier.

After a while of giving herself a tour of the weapons room, Anastasia smiled at Nicholas. "Do you often come here to hunt or to just relax and get away from the customs of royal life? I can tell you that sometimes I try to get away from the repetitiveness of royal life though I always accept that it is my duty to reign over the Ixanian Empire and its people."

Nicholas approached Anastasia, then gently opened up her hand. He placed the rapier within it. "Let me see how you wield this sword."

Once Anastasia was done with the rapier Nicholas returned it to spot. Returning to Anastasia's side, Nicholas looked at her, then started to blush. He had feelings for Anastasia, but he didn't know if it was just because of her appearance, yet.
"Would you like to see your bedroom now and have a light dinner afterwards?" asked Nicholas slightly grinning.

"The Imperial Family of Ixania does try to maintain its privacy whenever it can; we don't like having the paparazzi or whoever it is trying to encroach in our lives. We usually come out primarily for state visits and the like."
Once Anastasia was done with the rapier Nicholas returned it to spot. Returning to Anastasia's side, Nicholas looked at her, then started to blush. He had feelings for Anastasia, but he didn't know if it was just because of her appearance, yet.

A mischievous smile grew on Nicholas face. Suddenly he grabbed Anastasia's hand, then pulled along. Running inside the long hallway, they dash from one square of light to the next, made from the windows above. They continued along straight through the library and main seating room, then down another long hallway. Nicholas finally let go of Anastasia, but ran in front of her. It was as though he was a young kid again. He stopped in front of a door. Once Anastasia had caught up, Nicholas opened the door to reveal Anastasia's room.
As he opened the door the rays of sunlight came forth. The door and sunlight revealed a beautiful and majestic room. The wall of the made of plaster by were painted to the color of a creamy rose. In the middle of the room laid a immense and wooden four poster bed. Directly across from the bed was a fireplace, which of course had a fire going. To not go into much more detail a couch, chairs, bookcase, long mirror, and a desk were situated around the room. Also a two door, one lead to a private washroom and the other to a closet, could be seen. But what really stood out, were the immense windows and doors, which led to the balcony. This room was truly built for a Queen, or in the case of Anastasia an empress. Nicholas looked at Anastasia, waiting for her to say something.

"This room does give me a sense of simplicity mixed with the luxuries that one would expect a lodge of the royal family of a nation to own, Nicholas. I must say that this is a lovely and suitable room which I find to be just right for me. As for this belcony....I wish I brought my telescope!"
Anastasia giggled before speaking again. "At night I do get a chance to study the stars...but unfortunately I did not bring my telescope; the telescope that I have used for several years now. However, the two eyes I was born with serve as ample compensation. So, Nicholas, shall we take our leave and enjoy some time together?"

The room was very much in the same vein as the main seating room. The floor and walls, which had family heirlooms on it, were made of the same dark wood. "Well the circular dumpling looking thing are called Klöße (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kl%C3%B6%C3%9Fe). They are pretty much a potato dumpling, but they happen to be a favorite dish of Rudolf." Nicholas said with a smile and nodding toward Rudolf. Rudolf was trying to be respectful and have manners, but he just loved Klößes. "The white sausage is called Weisswurst (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wei%C3%9Fwurst). It is made from minced veal and fresh pork bacon. I think it is seasoned with parsley, lemon, mace, onions, ginger and cardamom. To me it is the best type of German sausage. Finally we have some side dishes which are sauerkraut, a fermented cabbage, and some diced and seasoned potatoes. Pretty much a nice good German meal."
After finishing most of the food, Nicholas resumed the conservation. "So Anastasia what do you like to do in your free time?"

"I've tried all of these foods before; my mother is a full blooded German so she had the palace chefs make German food sometimes for dinner. I'm a half-German because my father was a full blood Ixanian and my mother would always make me learn about my German heritage; I even have drindl that I wear and my brothers and even my father wore lederhosen."
After finishing most of the food, Nicholas resumed the conservation. "So Anastasia what do you like to do in your free time?"
"I like to do many things but astronomy is one of my favorites. I study the stars and the constellations with my own telescope and I write notes about what I see; I also have plenty of pictures too. Sometimes I ride horses, go for a walk in the garden, or meet with friends."

"Since you like horses would you like to go for a ride in the forest, after dinner?" asked Nicholas.

"When I was a young boy I dreamed of going back in time to the American West. Every story I could find about the old west I read. Actually my brothers and I use to pretend that we were cowboys. Those were certainly the days." Nicholas said as he reflected on the past. "I always I wanted to cross a vast amount of land on a horse. To get build a relationship with a real companion. Of course my parents vented these fascination of the west into horse riding lessons, though my parents wanted me to be some kind of equestrian. I wanted to ride like some old cowboy."
Rudolf started to chuckle as he remember those days.
