Meeting a New Friend (Closed; Attn Spice Mines)

The city of Redwall had been bustling with citizens of all ages and classes; committing themselves to their daily routines. Some elderly people could be seen at one of the city's cafes, playing a game or two of cards, while some were putting up posters about upcoming music events. People usually had something to do each day. In the city's government district, politicians were no exception as news of the visit of a politically inclined miner spread like wildfire across the government. Siegfried von Kreuzberg, adjusting his schedule to balance out other committments with his upcoming meeting with a man who called himself the "All Knowing Idiocy" (people in Phanar felt the title was odd and it was often satirized), had been told by the Grand Duchess of Tarren's plan to visit Phanar; she had invited him and he accepted. The average citizen, if not distracted by the latest gossip from a friend or the rising prices of a bag of licorice at their favorite store, could see a motorcade being prepared at the international airport; which usually saw tourists coming to see Phanar's natural beauty and experience its citizens' generous hospitality. Siegfried was waiting for Tarren to arrive in his best suit; playing the meeting in his mind as he imagined it would be. The Grand Duchess, expressing a desire to meet her new acquaintance again, would be waiting at the Grand Ducal Palace; where Tarren would see all the splendor of the Grand Ducal Family; the wealth and luxuries that often came with being born (or in the Grand Duchess' case: marrying into) into certain families.

"I wonder when he will arrive; that is, if the miner will even use an airplane." Siegfried said calmly while reading the miniature book (a Phanarian classic) he held in his hand; his eyes completely focused on its pages. If the miners did not know how to use an airplane; they would be greeted in other ways and at other locations. Siegfried did not really care how they arrived; he just wanted the meeting to be productive.

OOC: Feel free to send Tarren over now, S.M. Yes; he'll get to see the site of his future embassy but there is a tour of Redwall in store for him...

A giant brown airplane begins to pull in. It looks like a cargo plane, and it is badly rusted by salt. It touches down, and a group of people climb out. The first man Siegfried sees looks rather like how he thought Tarren would look. He is well groomed, wearing a brand new Armani suit, with a pickaxe struck across his arm. The next person is a woman in a beautiful flowing dress. Her hair is bright red, and her eyes are blue, with a ring of bright white around the pupils. The next is a man of distinct taste and quality. He is wearing a suit, with pinstripes of yellow diamond. He is soon followed by a woman wearing a carefully trimmed white dress, with elegantly done brown hair, and another woman, this one blonde, wearing a dark pink blouse, and a light red skirt. They go on either of his sides, and put their arms around his neck, seemingly indifferent about the other.

The final man is wearing a shiny gold hardhat, with spikes coming out at the sides, akin to a crown. He is wearing a dark green set of coveralls, and he is smeared with coal, and his boots are stained with oil. He smiles at you, and you notice his teeth are filthy. He smells quite bad. The others do as well, but it is very bearable. The smell wafting from him reels you back a bit. A garbage dump would be preferable. Pray you never have to smell anything quite as rank again. He walks down the stairs, and he offers to shake hands. He is holding out his left hand.

Several of the well dressed people are murmuring, with the exception of the first to exit the plane. Many of the complaints are given with sighs of relief.

"I haven't had a bath in months! I hate that mine..."

Many people found the Miners' plane to be oddly placed with all the Phanarian airplanes at the airport but they were more focused on who came out of it. Seeing Tarren walk out with the women, some people suggested that he was a bachelor in his nation and there were more than enough glances at the women. The other guests recieved some attention but it was Tarren who had the most.

Tarren was immediately greeted by a small detachment of musicians who stood in a single line on the right side of a red carpet; soldiers stood silently on the left and tightly held their guns. Siegfried stepped forward with his secretary, a lusicious brunette with an hourglass frame, and smiled at Tarren. He restrained himself from rejecting to offer a handshake due to the smell and within seconds Tarren could see Siegfried's hand extended.

"Welcome, sir, to the Grand Duchy of Phanar. Do not worry about your plane; it will be stored in one of our airport's terminals. The Grand Duchess knew you would come to see us. Please follow me."

Siegfried led Tarren to what looked like a limosuine; surrounding it were some police vehicles. The limosuine was furnished completely and would appeal to anyone hoping to enjoy luxury during a ride. Helping the women inside, Siegfried took his seat and spoke to Tarren. "The windows are tinted and only we can see out; people cannot see inside." It would take a couple of minutes for the Phanarian motorcade to begin driving into the city; allowing Tarren to see how Phanarian citizens lived. Elderly people were playing cards, schoolgirls gossiping about friends, fashion, and boys while a group of expectant mothers walked out of a health class. The entirety of the city looked modern, cosmpolitan, developed and Siegfried felt quite proud to be able to call it home.

His secretary was busy reading notes but would occassionally look out the window; a large smile came on her face when she saw some of her friends outside. Siegfried knew it would take some time for the motorcade to arrive at its destination so he began looking at Tarren. "Tell me more about yourself; since it will take some time for us to arrive at our destination."

Siegfried knew it would take some time for the motorcade to arrive at its destination so he began looking at Tarren. "Tell me more about yourself; since it will take some time for us to arrive at our destination."

Tarren gestures to the first man in a suit, the plainer looking one, who begins translating English to English for him.

"The Mines have always been a democracy, thankfully," a dictatorship, sadly, "and I was elected," I took over, "10 years ago, last week. We are a very small nation," very large (although not on the surface), "and we proudly live aboveground," underground. "We are poor," rich, "in the commodities of the earth, such as uranium, gold, oil, and coal."

He looks at two of the women- the shorter blonde one, and the taller redheaded one -, and gulps nervously. But, they are distracted, talking to each other. He shifts his glance to the second man in a suit, and is relieved by the fact that he is similarly distracted, paying attention to his wife. He trusted him deeply as a friend, but not as a cabinet member.

"My cabinet has agreed with most of my decisions," they've overruled many, and perverted the others, "which has greatly helped," stricken, "my strive for fascism," democracy, "as shown perfectly by our latest law, which amends both the age of consensus and the age of marriage so high up," to be so much younger, "that I've become somewhat of a hero," villain, "to the general public. My only supporters seem to be the army, and their influence seems to be shrinking," growing, "but there is a price to that. My dictatorship," democracy, "has reemerged once again as a democracy," dictatorship.

He begins playing with his moustache, then realises what he's doing, and stops.

"When will we be there, do you suppose?"

OOC: Long post ahead....

As Tarren spoke, Siegfried's secretary was zealously writing down notes in her book; she was rather quite hard working and efficient and it was no wonder Siegfried hired her; a small-town girl wanting to make a life for herself in the capital city. "This is the city of Redwall; our nation's capital city. It has always been a cosmopolitan city and quite homogenous; in that the vast majority of citizens are Phanarians. The small towns hardly have any non-Phanarians; but it does not mean we are xenophobic; people just have not really considered immigrating here in recent times."

The motorcade continued going down the streets; eventually being seen on the path leading to the government district. Tarren could see all sorts of citizens on the streets; including some women walking out of a beauty salon and a group of businessmen walking into a restaurant. "We are at the outskirts of the wealthier part of the city; in which people of wealth live. You'd find all sorts of luxuries here."

When the motorcade drove past the Grand Ducal Palace, Siegfried smiled at Tarren. "Our destination is the headquarters of the Foreign Ministry; we will go to the Palace afterwards. The Grand Duchess will meet you; but her husband and family are out of the city at the moment. The Grand Duke told me to welcome you on his behalf to Phanar; hoping you would have a good time."

The Foreign Ministry Headquarters was located near the center of the government district; diplomats and secretaries all worked in a massive 19th century building that had gold letters over the entrance with the coat of arms above it. The letters formed words in the Phanarian language; but Siegfried provided a translation for Tarren and the others. Entering it, they could see some diplomats walking through the halls and a receptionist was at the front desk; reading a magazine with a picture of the Grand Duchess' son and a woman in a wedding dress. When she noticed Siegfried, she immediately put the magazine down and focused her eyes on him; adjusting her blouse. "Welcome, Mr. von Kreuzberg! These people must be your guests; I'll sign them in."

Siegfried smiled and spoke to her in Phanarian for a moment; occassionally pointing at Tarren and the others before he beckoned them all to him; leading them to his office. "We usually keep a record of the guests we have here; so we can keep track."

As they walked, they could see all the people at work; reading reports and talking about foreign policy. Siegfried's office was easily found as it had quite the extravagant door. Entering it, they could see stacks of papers, folders and pictures. Some newspaper articles could also be seen as well as a letter from the Grand Duke; inviting Siegfried to his son's wedding.

Exhorting his guests to take their seats, Siegfried began to speak. "I think we should discuss the embassy first. What does the Spice Mines want in an embassy?"

He motions to the second man in a suit, the more well-off looking one.

"We would hate," like, "a building with one or two stories, and two or more basement floors. Plumbing is not necessary, as it is a necessity," luxury, "my people understand," don't understand, "and have never wanted. That's pretty much it."

"Financial or commodious trade?"

He takes out a couple cylindrical tiny barrels.

"These are Oil Drums. It's our currency."

He waves his hand to the blonde girl, who comes by.

"This is Katie Greene, our Minister of Mining. She will not need a translator, as she is native," foreign. "She will discuss our resources with you."

She sits down, and brushes her hair out of her face.

"Despite our name, we no longer have any stores of spice. It used to be our chief source of trade, but, as I just said, we are devoid of it. We are losing our previous surplus of oil and salt, it's still there, just getting harder to remove. Our gold trade is doing well, and our coal trade is doing better." She puts on a pair of glasses, clears her throat, reads a piece of paper, and removes her glasses. "Our uranium business has just begun, and we are still learning the technicalities. It may be some time before we are able to trade it to other countries. We have found much in the old Spice Mine, and suitable amounts in the Coal Mine."
