Operation: Elbow Room (OPEN!!!!!)

Grimmeberg
09-03-2008, 22:22
Gerd Becker, Chancellor of the City Republic of Grimmeberg, was deep in discussion with his aides and military leaders. Major General George Svenson, Admiral Thomas Carnegie, and Wing Commander Kyle Treskon were present, along with Foreign Minister Hibbert Model and Prime Minister Richard Binns. They had all proposed a solution to the nation's chronic overcrowding problem: get some more territory. Of course, what they were suggesting could quite possibly trigger a war with numerous other nations, something that the Chancellor had no illusions about: he knew if that were to happen, they would have to settle for the best possible terms of surrender/cease-fire, or get their sorry asses kicked into the stone age. Binns presented the problem in an eloquent phrasing.
"We simply cannot fit anymore people onto this rock. You already have to practically walk on top of people to get anywhere."
Treskon presented the most viable solution. "Belgium, the Netherlands, and Denmark, are all easy takings. Of course, if anyone were to move against us, we would have to back down (OOC: that is secret, IC). However, that doesn't mean we don't have adequete means to sieze those areas. That could temporarily alleviate some of the overcrowding."
Fuchs concurred. "Our navy is large enough to hold the territory and to keep lines of trade, transport, and communication with those places open."
"So you're all all for it, then?"
The answer was a resounding "yes." So the Grimmean Chancellor gave the "OK" for the invasion of Denmark, Belgium, and the Netherlands to begin in 16 days' time.

-------------------------------
21 days later:

At relatively low losses, Belgium and most of Denmark had fallen. The remainder of the plan called for a pincer movement by Treskon and Hall into the Netherlands, which would conclude Operation Elbow Room. Antwerp had been quickly siezed on the second day of the invasion, and Copenhagen on the fourth. Brussels and Maastrict had surrendered on day four, as had the remainder of Denmark. Herstal had surrendered on day five, and the road to Amsterdam was open. Admiral Carnegie's fleet was bombarding Dutch shore defenses and was launching air raids to soften the defenses at the Dutch capital. Things were looking like this whole thing could work out after all.

There's the fact that I could start aiming for even more. Hitler started small. He turned out to be a huge menace.
Besides, thats your opinion. People might care about Denmark, Belgium and the Netherlands. Even then, its not really about them. Its about the fact that there's an aggressive nation siezing territory.

From: Emmerican republic.

We are recommending that you stand down from your immediate military action, we are prepared to use whatever military might is needed, and perhaps you will attract the wrong attention of dominating super power.

We are calling for 3 things:-

1. The immediate withdrawal of a large amount of your forces occupying your neighbouring nations. Peacekeepers will be aloud.
2. Emmerican aid workers to be granted free passage as well as a task force of Emmerican troops to help Red Cross relief workers.
3. Talks at a mutual location.

Failure to do these will result in a lot harder negations.

Yours sincerely,
Emmerican senate.

"By god I hate those pencil pushers." Shouted the general. "With our economy in tatters, it is only a matter of time before we have to start selling of our military might." (OCC: private for now.)
He paced up and down the room.
"We need to give off the appearance of a weak nation for, stall diplomatic efforts, ready a LMN strike team incase it hits the fan. O’Connor out."

The general left the room, in doing so the red light in the corner slowly died out.

(OCC: just thought I would help start this.)

OOC: Being evil is always good, because it gets a whole buncha people interested. It seems evil is always more noticed on this board than good, anyhow. RL nations involved often don't seem to attract much attention.

Try oppression, or slavery, or blowing up trade ships and causing environmental crises, or something delightfully in-between. Use your imagination and have at it - if you open with great writing and great style, people will like you OOCly no matter what your political disposition is.

Major General Hall, commander of the Danish front, turned his attention to the south of the Netherlands and then would turn north to Amsterdam. Svenson would make straight for Amsterdam. They would have to race their 80,000 troops to the Dutch capital and to force a surrender, so as many men would be available to put on a tough face before negotiation.

Day 6 of Operation Elbow Room

Svenson's forces had reached Amsterdam, and were had issued the demand for surrender. They would wait 24 hours, at which point the siege would begin proper. Hall was tearing his way across the south and had left a good portion of his forces to guard the eastern approach. Treskon had done the same, guarding the westerly approach with some of his men.

Official Response to the Emmerican Republic

While we do not mean any harm to those in the now occupied territories, we are willing to negotiate. However, we must keep hold of these lands; our home island suffers from chronic overcrowding, and, quite simply, we need living space for 707 million people. Please understand our actions; they have been taken with no malice meant towards others, and we will rule the new lands justly, and new subjects will be given full citizenship. We are willing to temporarily allow your troops into occupied territory to ensure fair play by our men, and you may send medics in. However, we will not withdraw from occupied territory; it is critical to our nation's survival.
We will be happy to have further talks with you. We have at this point approved the following locations. See which (if any) suit you:
1. Ghent, Occupied Belgium
2. Herstal, Occupied Belgium
3. Copenhagen, Occupied Denmark
4. Grimmeberg, City-Republic of Grimmeberg
5. London, UK
6. Paris, France
7. Rome, Italy
8. Aachen, Germany
9. Munich, Germany
10. Berlin, Germany

OOC NOTE: At the moment, my total forces deployed in the Netherlands and occupied territories total 358,836 personnel. Casualites sustained: 1,164 total; 273 dead, 891 wounded.

Problem was, I didn't want to use IC nations, because then: A) I'm not sure who would agree to getting invaded by a wussy nation like me; B) I didn't want to die on my first confilct thread...(call me a wuss, but I'd like to survive my first...)

Colonel Quinn Hergonison looked at the bunch of dissidents in front of him. These were people from Maastrict, a Dutch town, who had spoken out against the Grimmean occupation.
What a sorry bunch of rebels. "FIRE!" A dozen shots rang out, and they all lay dead, executed by the Public Order units, as they were known euphamistically, among several dozen others killed by such units. Yes, Grimmean units were killing those who opposed the invasion. They weren't about to let this newly aquired territory. Not that this was authorized by the Chancellor. Or even one of the Major Generals. It was organized by Lt. General Criosic Goering, to clear out any who would oppose Grimmean rule. The squads got back to work, giving the victims at the very least proper burials. They wouldn't deprive them of that; it would be subhuman, after all.

"Right lads, lets start mobilisation, if it hits the fan I want a defence team at the next location that will be hit, god bless the government, with the economy on the rise, we shall surely be quite the intimating enemy. Operation Elbow Room: Day 8

Major Generals Treskon and Hall had completed the systematic destruction of Dutch resistance; Operation Elbow Room had succeeded. Not bad for the first major foreign deployment of the Heer. Now whether CRG could use that victory would be another story entirely.

They now set about fortifying the newly aquired territory, erecting tank ditches, anti-air defenses, AT and regular artillary batteries, and fortifying the roughly 330,000 men at their disposal. They had to be ready for anything the Emmericans could throw at them. Intelligence reports were spotty, at best, so the Grimmean leaders were unsure what to prepare for. Carnegie's North Atlantic Fleet would provide support, and Luftwaffe units would be ready to deploy at a moment's notice. The nation's 240 some tanks were concentrated at regular stations to be rushed to any threatened zone. Not impregnable, but certainly a pain in the ass to nearly any conventional opponent attempting to attack. Fuchs' remaining 200,000 men were ready to defend the home island. The Baltic Fleet and Home Defense Fleet were ready to defend the regions from any direction. (OOC NOTE: Troop and unit dispositions are IC Secret)

"Right get the troops lined up now, I want the royal marines on standby. Emmm try getting me some clearance on the LMN Special Forces as well, the EAF and ENU are on standby, last time I checked. Am I right lieutenant Rodgers?" The general who was calling the shots paced up and down.

"Yes General Donovan sir, the Navy will take another day, while the EAF is always on standby, the royal marines are ready, we will also get the heavy assault teams lined up, I know we seem hasty sir, but satellite imagery says they have huge numbers, we don't have specifics, not in unit types, but all we know is the thermal imagery on the ground is swarming."(OCC: hopefully this isn't wrecking your secrecy.)

"Rodgers, what the hell are we using weather satellites?” Donovan’s chest rapidly inflated, with his muscular appearance becoming quite noticeable. 'For such a small man, he sure did run things' he thought

"Rodgers what is the shortest amount of time we can have our forces mobilised and in Europe." Donovan swirled the whiskey around his mouth before gulping it down.

"5 days sir, that’s including the shroud of secrecy of our quick strikes sir. The marines shall be ready in 3 days while the heavy assault is about the same. With our close proximity to Europe it would be a day or 2 of good sailing to hit the French coasts, maybe an extra day to get us to the 'dam." Rodgers looked extremely proud of himself. "And sir LMN is ready and awaiting the code word.”

Donovan was pleased. "Now let’s hope we don't have to prepare for war and that god damn diplomat sorts this out.

OOC: How did your men get to Zeeland? Isn't it at least partways inland? If you invaded overland, they'd have had to have fought their way through the Ardennes, Walloonia, Flanders, or through Denmark. Unlikely, to say the least. Unless they fought their way past the naval and coastal defences (in which case, shouldn't we have RP'd that, to some extent?). Which direction are you trying to approach from?

Grimmean Foreign Minister Hibbert Model checked one last time that all files, notes, etc. that he needed were accounted for. With that, he strode confidently into the confrence room.
"Hello, Mr. Representative...I'm afraid I didn't catch your name," Model paused, waiting for the diplomat to give him his name. He continued. "I'm Foreign Minister Model, and I'm fairly sure we both know why we are here today. So let's get to business.
"In the past few years, we have had a major population boom; we have found ourselves sorely in lack of room for all these people. Surely you understand how difficult it is to fit 500,000,000+ people onto a small island?
"The obvious solution to our problem, which we had not yet dared to take until now, following our population topping 700 million, was to occupy neighboring nations, and to establish Grimmean colonial towns within them. Now we have taken this measure, and we intend to keep what we have won. Therefore, I present to you the major points we intend to stand by in these negotiations:
1. The continued occupation of Belgium, Denmark, and the Netherlands by Grimmeberg.
2. Total Grimmean sovreignty.
3. Our territorial integrity will be respected.
We intend to stand by this. Can you negotiate with these terms?" the Foreign Minister concluded.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Operation Elbow Room: Day 9

Up until this point, the Grimmean government had stayed short of full-scale mobilization; the campaign was supposed to be short, no? However, now with the threat of foreign intervention, the Chancellor saw fit to take a major step: to call up 200,000 Home Defense Reserves. He gave the order to Major General Fuchs to begin training the new recruits, and to also take control of the Gendarmerie.

IC:

Emperor Heinrich II was, as usual, being debriefed as to a developing situation elsewhere in the world. In this case, it seemed, a rogue nation known as Grimmeberg was expanding into neutral territory. And, as evidently few to no other nations had stepped in to stop the Grimmeans and to put them back in their place, the Achae-Ottonian Empire would have to do something, apparently.
"Negotiations are being held between Grimmeberg and a republic known as Emmerica. We could probably send a diplomat to attempt to strike a deal with them. Should that fail...Marshal Von Dredicburg has offered to step in personally and to lead the Army of the Westfall to rectify the situation" an aide informed the young Emperor.
Heinrich nodded. If they were to send any army, Von Dredicburg's was the best: it had completed the refitting of its equipment (more or less) and was the most combat ready of any formation. "Who do we send to speak with them, though?"
"Foreign Minister Runstidus just returned from another assignment, sir."
"Good. Send him." The 19-year-old Emperor had just given his ok to a foreign intervention.

To Emmerica and Grimmeberg

If it is acceptable to both parties, we wish to send our own representative to join the negotiations to back up Emmerica. Either way, if you refuse, we will be forced to intervene militarily; we hope we do not have to.

Walking back into the room, Model addressed Eponic's comments about Grimmeberg's terms.
"I'm afraid we're going to have a bit of trouble here, then. Because we are not withdrawing from any occupied territory; we have no intention of oppressing anyone; the residents will be given all rights and privelages of Grimmean citizens." He paused. "As for your demand to halt our forces at their current locations: we did not have any intention of siezing more, even in the earliest planning stages of this campaign; therefore, your fear of us expanding even more, is unfounded." He took a breath. He was on a roll here. "Finally, we will only remove all regular military forces from these regions when the threat of military retaliation has passed. At that point, Gendarmerie units will be posted there, as a regular peacekeeping/police force. Until then, the troop buildup will remain."

--------------------------------------------------------

The Grimmean Major Generals had met to formulate a new operation, a non-aggressive one; Operation Hospitaller, a plan to fortify newly aquired territory. The 350,000 men were being dug in, with all manner of defenses.

I have mine, you’re a sad excuse for a man, and I pray to god you country surrender before other countries take notice. Enjoy the city.”

Eponic walked out. Later he would find the message of the country supporting the Emmerica views. ‘At least I know what we are doing is right’ Eponic thought to himself. He closed the taxi door and departed to the airport.

The Emmerican navy was slowly parting from the port, they would be the main long range attack force with there new experimental rail guns (OCC: If I cant use rail guns because all the kinks haven’t been worked out in this day and age, probably wont have for another 10 years or so, if not just change rail gun to 155mm howitzers.)

The land force would land at a nearby shore and set up a logistics line, the destroyers would sail aside the troops, softening up the enemy with the Emmerican air force, General Donovan laughed at his plan ‘it was simple, but by god it would work.”

As Eponic began to walk out of the meeting, Model called his name. The man turned, and Model proceded to use a rather rude hand gesture to tell the man exactly what he thought of him.
"That's what you can do with your armies, too," the rather annoyed foreign minister added. And with that, the meeting ended.

Operation Hospitaller: Day 5

The North Sea Fleet had been diverted to give the Emmerican forces a taste of heavy gunfire (OOC: the exact break down of the fleets is in my factbook under Kriegsmarine.) A hastily created set of bunkers and trenches would, if not necessarily stall the enemy indeffinitely, would certainly frustrate them and buy the Grimmean forces time. More men had been mobilized and roughly 100,000 more men had been added to the Northern European garrison forces. Tanks, APC's full of infantry, and rocket artillary awaited any Emmerican troops who came up against the Grimmean line. Planes from the carrier CGS Theodore Roosevelt, and the lurking battlecruisers CGS Basilisk, and CGS Leviathan waited to pulverize the enemy fleet, and various wings of fighters and bombers from the Grimmeberg Luftwaffe prepared to make sure that the enemy could run, but would just die tired. This was going to be one hell of a fight.

Lord Dreadfire had happened to catch the daily intelligence briefing on global conflicts at the right time, for as he scanned the list he came upon the summary of the land grab taking place by the nation of Grimmeberg and the subsequent deployments from Emmerica in hopes of halting their advance. As he thumbed over the few sheets of paper he nodded ever so slightly in approval of what he was seeing, and this would present a perfect opportunity for him to put his expansion of the Excessively Armed Empire into swing. Dreadfire had grown quite angry at the lack of volunteers to join his expansive Empire, and he made it clear to his Warchiefs that if people would not flock to his banner peacefully, then he would bring them into the fold through force.

For the task of integrating Grimmeberg would fall to Vidimir Breathstealer, hero from the Kraven Wars and one of the Supreme Warlord's finest up and coming Warchiefs. Vidimir himself had been thrust into action many decades ago buy a surprise turn of events by the Kraven Corporation during the Freekish genocide in Kahanistan, and since that day he had proven himself in battle time and time again. Under his command would be a sizable task force with enough Sentinels at his disposal to more than accomplish his goals of bringing Grimmeberg into the Empire if they chose to foolishly resist.

Later in the day Lord Dreadfire penned his statement to the leaders of Grimmeberg and Emmerica as Vidimir's ships began to mass in the blue Freekish waters, though they would have to wait for their escorting vessels to slip from port and rally with the rest of the fleet before they could move out. His flagship, the Disciple of Hell, began to drift futher out to sea as he continued to form up his armada, and hopefully soon he would be able to depart Automagfreek.

It has come to my attention that military elements from the nation of Grimmeberg have begun to expand their borders by force for the sake of solving an overcrowding crisis. We have also oberserved statements and movements made by government officials in Emmerica in an attempt to counter Grimmeberg's acquisition of territory.

Truth be told I care not about imperialism, expansionism, or anything of the sort. In fact, Grimmeberg's actions do not offend me in the slightest. I come here not to halt their advances but instead announce that Grimmeberg and all of its affiliated territories have been selected for assimilation into the Excessively Armed Empire, a collective of colonies and nationstates under the rule of Automagfreek, but more explicitly, my rule.

Effective immediately the newly assimilated territory of Grimmeberg will submit itself to Freekish authority and welcome our armed forces into their lands with open arms. From there our commanders will personally take charge of their military and begin our program of integrating their units into our command structure, and we will begin the transition to an Imperial way of life. If the leaders of Grimmeberg choose to resist in any way, shape or form, harsh punishment will be dealt out and we will take control with force. Automagfreek possesses the most experienced and powerful military in this modern world, and against the Sentinels there can be no victory. Should your leaders choose to cooperate, they will maintain their positions of power and serve as overlords of their lands and as representatives to the greater Empire.

We will also make it known to the leadership of Emmerica that they should immediately withdraw themselves and their forces back to their homeland, or else they too will be singled out for assimilation. There will be no negotiations on this matter, for compliance is the only way.

We expect our navy to be arriving within days, and if so much as a single round is fired in anger towards my forces, I will punish Grimmeberg harshly. I would prefer to see your lands an infrastructure remain unspoiled, but if I must destroy and rebuild, so be it.

"God damn it." Donovon thought to himself. The Emmerians couldn't fight two nations at once.
"Get the navy to patrol the border. Don't make any attempts to leave our border for now." He slammed his fist on the table hard, cutting his hand.
'Atleast I know I am still alive.' he sighed deeply and went to bandage his hand.

Chancellor Becker read this message out loud to the assembled Grimmean Senate, then added his own comments.
"These people would have us sacrifice our hard-earned freedom. I don't think we should, though the choice rests with each of you, representatives of the Grimmean people.
"I have, at the very least, taken the liberty of recalling all forces from abroad, and have called up all Reserve units and have mobilized the nation's factories for war; we are producing lots of artillary, anti-tank weapons, guns, missile interceptors, etc. to be used. Martial law has been declared. For us, the time has come to conquer or submit; that choice rests with you."
However, the vote was unanimous: the Heer, Kriegsmarine, Luftwaffe, and Gendarmerie would be called up and the city defended with everything available. Major General Fuchs was instructed to send this message in response.

To Damian the Destroyer,

While we'd really rather not, it doesn't seem that we have much choice other than to submit. I don't think people will be too happy about it, though, so I hope you have a lot of ammo and patience. If not, then it sure sucks to be you. Haha.
It should be noted that we request that we be able to operate with a degree of seperateness within your military, insofar as organization. Following orders is not a problem, we're just more comfortable and effective with our own structure. And if we are allowed to elect our overlords, if that's alright.

Cheers,
Heinrich Hibbert Fuchs
Major General, Heer

OOC: No, I'm not just giving up; I plan on RP'ing the resistance to the occupation. Hope you're ready.
