From the ashes (open RP)

Years ago, the nation of Roach-Busters disappeared into isolation and obscurity. Little was heard from that nation, and seldom was it spoken of, by friends or foes. It was as if the nation itself had vanished, never to be seen again. Few suspected that the true reason for its retreat from the international community was a harrowing war which nearly toppled what previously seemed to be an impregnable regime. The J.L. dictatorship, long regarded as one of the most stable in the world, came within an inch of defeat at the ends of a coup launched by would-be usurpers who nearly succeeded in killing J.L. and deposing his government. Mortified and perturbed by the near-death experience, a visibly shaken J.L. had ordered loyalist troops to find, capture, and destroy the traitors. After a series of epic, catastrophic battles, they finally did so. For several years civil war gripped the nation, and in its wake it wrought massive infrastructural damage and felled millions of people. The country's previously robust economy plummeted. It seemed as if the survival of the nation itself was at stake, and it was.

Fortuitously for the Generalissimo (but not for his adversaries), his forces slowly gained the upper hand and inflicted a stinging defeat on the rebellion, finally bringing the years of strife and upheaval to a chaotic end. Peace and stability had returned - but at a hefty price.

Just rebuilding the country took several years, and cost more than the country - nearly bankrupted by the war - could bear. Severe austerity measures were implemented; unemployment skyrocketed; inflation soared; riots and strikes, though technically illegal, broke out throughout the nation periodically. It seemed as if the specter of revolution would haunt the country. J.L. barely managed to pacify the country - having to resort to brute force to do so - and his reforms took longer than he expected to get the economy up and running again. After several recessions, the economy finally stabilized, and had recorded satisfactory levels of growth since then.

Nevertheless, problems remained. The military was overstaffed, ill-equipped, and poorly paid. Crime remained a serious problem. The quality of education and healthcare remained abysmal. Melancholy and discontent pervaded the atmosphere. Although J.L. himself remained beloved by most as the stern but caring father of the nation, for the first time people had severe reservations, severe doubt, about the future. However, J.L. had decided that things were sufficiently stable for the country to emerge from isolation.

Now, after years of going it alone, J.L. recognized that it was time, once again, to open up to the world.

The following speech was broadcast on international television:

"Hello to all fellow nations,

In spite of reports to the contrary, I am indeed alive and well. My nation has survived. Roach-Busters has suffered tremendous tumult and strife, and grave problems remain, but the people are weathering them with resilience and courage. After years of licking our wounds, house cleaning, and putting things in order, we are ready again to take our place in the family of nations.

Thank you, and good day."

Mr. Oblivion,

On behalf of all Roach-Busterians, I would like to thank the United Republic - and you personally - for your warm words and kind offer of assistance. Should we require aid, I will inform you at once, and gracefully accept it. I am pleased to note that my schedule is open - a rarity. If you would like to meet with me sometime, perhaps we can arrange something.

When Roach-Busters was a Super Power, Anagonia was more than a Power that went with the wind. At that time, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics of Nodea Rudav was the Super Power, and observed Roach-Busters. But, as with all things, time does pass. With the seclusion of Nodea Rudav, and the rising dominance of Anagonia, Roach-Busters became but a memory in the minds of the Republic Government.

That was, until now.

In the Grand Library of the Republic sat records of all recorded nations having contacts, or having been observed. Even the secret ones, under the order of the Constitution to the People. The File on Roach-Busters became public when it ceased to exist, in a manner of terms, and no longer seemed relevant for observations from the Military or Governing powers that be. Many citizens overlooked it, few did essay's on it, and very few took it into mind.

What was reported was a dictator and a nation, oppression and solitude. That was it, in so many words. Nothing special, nothing else. Many Generals had planned attacks that would never happen, many Officials planned diplomatic events that never came to fruition. It was one of those observed nations that Anagonia had just stood at a distance to, and nothing more.

All that changed with the reemergence.

Chief of Foreign Affairs and Activities Caster Oblivion was acting Chief Governor in the absence of Dunan Ruu. The moment a message from a supposed long dead civilization was recorded, he took note. These things rarely happened, and when it did it was good to establish something of a good handshake for future relations. Caster was all too aware of their government, and they way they treated their people. But like Red Tide, when you ensured one nation never bugged you yours prospered unhindered.

At least that was the initial prospect of relations. So, with a sigh, Caster formed the reply.

We hope this message greets you in good times.

Your return to the world scene brings a stabilizing effect to the international spectrum, and we have read carefully your statement. Therefore, the United Republic of Anagonia will freely offer any assistance you need to become the Power that you once were, in return for friendship. We seek allies, and we seek friends. We hope you can be among them.

Don't be afraid to contact us should you need any help whatsoever, we would be glad to oblige.

Sincerely,
Caster Oblivion
Chief of Foreign Affairs and Activities

OOC:

For clarification: The above statement in paragraph one does not indicate that Anagonia took action against Roach-Buster to ensure their demise. Instead, it points towards the rising of the United Republic, and the fall of Nodea Rudav into the Republic. Nothing about Roach-Busters being in the Republic or having had action taken against it.

Just for the sake of clarification, lol.

Dear Friend J.L.

It is with happy assurance that I, too, have an opening for relations. While I cannot expressively dictate a quick response when we meet due to my priorities, I can assure you that all needs shall be met in this talk. I would be happy to meet with you, and hope to find your nation doing well.

Burlovia´s Minister of Foreign Affairs sent a public greeting to the nation he had never heard of before, hoping that this rising new country would be interested in trade relations. Over the years he had learned that big powers that were not economically fully autonomic often made big deals, and there was a lot of money going around.

"The Socialist Union of Burlovia has noticed your nation, and we are looking to establish diplomatic relations with you. If you agree, we may also recognize you officially by the end of the week. Let there be friendship between our two great countries!"

J.L. inwardly groaned. Having personally overthrown a left-wing regime and having afterwards presided over the killings of so many leftists that he made Suharto look like an amateur, he had no desire to affiliate his nation with a socialist one. Yet, he also realized that forging ties with this nation would do much to rehabilitate RB's reputation in the world and help throw off - or at least mitigate - RB's pariah status. So, after careful deliberation, he penned the following reply:

To: Minister of Foreign Affairs of Burlova
From: Generalissimo J.L.

Diplomatic relations would be excellent. I, too, hope friendship may blossom between our two countries.

Greetings!

Your announcement had reached us here in the United Kingdom of Brutland and Norden. We are fully aware that the multiverse is a vast place where a nation and a civilization can fall out of sight or emerge or reemerge; our country had emerged fairly recently. Though the United Kingdom of Brutland and Norden may have no previous contacts with you or your country, we are glad to welcome you to the international community. We look forward to working with you and your country.

Thank you.

General Somonov entered a busy control center, where were also Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Economy. Being in the highest charge of Burlovia´s defence forces, he was also worried about forming relations to new nations. You could never know...

"I have the newest intel about Roach-Busters," he started, "Some years back the leftists dissappeared from the government and that is about all we know. It is difficult to say if they were violently over-thrown or if it was due to democratic voting."

"It seems unlikely they are strong anti-communists," said the Minister of Economy, "After all, they are willing to establish diplomatic relations with us."

After a quick debate the three of them decided to send the following message:

Our government decides about recognizing your country in two hours. The result is probably going to be positive. Our officers are ready to discuss about establishing an embassy in Roach-Busters with your officers.

Burlovian Government voted "yes" on the issue of recognizing Roach-Busters by votes 732-268, the most concervative communists opposing. For many more liberal members this seemed a good opportunity to open the country and a step to end its long isolation on economical and diplomatical issues.

Government has decided that we will recognize you and that we will start diplomatic relations as soon as possible. We have named an ambassador, Dmitri Pacivits, who will be in charge of the relations with you. We have also planned a place for your embassy, in case you are willing to establish one.

Lodging will be provided for him, at the Commission's expense, while the Burlovan embassy is under construction. The Commission also confirms the Roach-Busterian government's decision to build an embassy in Burlova. We look forward to cooperative relations between our two countries.

We in the United States are puzzled by the sudden return of Roach-Busters to the world stage, and as such we would like to reserve judgment on this event. However, we would like to request the permission to open an embassy in Roach-Busters, and further to re-open trade with your nation, returning to the status of international free trade.

Further, we would like to deliver to your nation humanitarian aid to the tune of 10,000,000,000 Universal Standard Dollars, to be spent solely on the rebuilding of your nation's infrastructure.

We thank you in advance for your reply,
The Allaneans.

And so, the Allanean Chamber of Commerce began to operate in Roach-Busters. It was composed of the leaders of various key Allanean corporations – the Stossel Tea Company, Allanean Arms, and Liberty Networks, as well as the Demented Schooling Corporation.

They joined together to coordinate a storm of advertisements – in the papers, on the radio, on the Internet – to promote Allanean products, Allanean food, Allanean schools.

Allanean Arms had wanted to sell it's amazing line of civilian cars, ( http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=529723) and for that purpose, it put ads in the various car magazines present in Roach-Busters.

The Demented Schooling Corporation promoted homeschooling kits and real-sciences-oriented schools ( http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=513381), which, of course, contained a level of the mandated Papa-Worship, but on a less extreme level than the government schools, and focused to a great deal on math, biology, and chemistry.

And, of course, Cute Bunny Burger Corporation ( http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=471405) renewed its operations, as well.

Cute Bunny Burgers Corporations had always enjoyed immense popularity in RB (now known as Magdha), and its return was greeted with much enthusiasm. There were lines stretching for literally miles outside every establishment, and in the space of just a few days, the corporation's revenues went through the roof. The sight of cheerful citizens munching away on CBBC burgers became as common as the lapel badges bearing Generalissimo J.L.'s portrait.
