We'd like to introduce ourselves...

Artiquit
03-03-2008, 07:38
Unlike with some new nations, who introduced themselves to the rest of the world with elegant video presentations, the government of Artiquit only sent in a letter for each UN nation to the UN to introduce themselves.
It was a warm, dull day in Artiquit, yet an exciting day. It was only last week when the southwestern Pacific island declared themselves a nation. Now, they were just about ready to tell it to the world.
Finally, it was 4:36 PM when Conan Gabe's secretary brought him the revised letter to look at and approve. Conan Gabe, Artiquit's president, was sitting at his desk inputting the latest numbers into a database and listening to Tchaikovsky's fourth symphony. He was a big fan of Tchaikovsky. The secretary brought in the letter for Conan, and he read it. It was good. A very good introduction to the world, in his opinion. "Good, good. Print out enough for every country in the United Nations and send them. Address them carefully. We don't want them to get lost." It was simple, and he liked it. Plain white 8.5 by 11 inch paper. Simple and logical. The letter, which was formatted more like an encyclopedia entry, read as follows:

People's Republic of Artiquit

March 2, 2073

To United Nations representatives from around the world:

Introduction
Artiquit is an island in the southwest Pacific ocean. Being a pure communism, Artiquit has no currency system. All citizens are required to get a small radio tag implanted under their skin to identify them as a citizen, eliminating the need for standard forms of money. For international trade, Artiquit exports certain goods that are in abundance, such as software, books, coconuts, coffee beans, and cacao beans. Artiquit, being formed from a very large submarine volcano, also has a volcanic pipe filled with Kimberlite, a known source of diamonds. As such, Artiquit currently has 3 mining shafts in operation in the volcanic pipe, generating a bit of revenue.

History
Artiquit was, for a long time, just another island in the southwest Pacific ocean. Although rather large for an island, Artiquit did not have many inhabitants due to its lack of government. Eventually, however, Artiquit's ideals became rather appealing, and more people came. Soon, they realized the need for a stable government and elected some officials. Some standards such as currency and language were set, and the island of Artiquit became a People's Republic.

People and Philosophy
The philosophy of the people of Artiquit is the pursuit of knowledge and the betterment of mankind. The people of Artiquit, having no currency, getting everything they need from the government, work for the betterment of themselves and mankind. Every political decision is voted upon by the people of Artiquit. The president only brings up some of these issues and has little more influence than any ordinary citizen. One could describe the president of Artiquit as a figurehead, and the people as the real power.

Interest in world politics
Artiquit has decided that it does not want to join the United Nations. Artiquit's goal is not to become a world superpower. Artiquit would, however, like to be kept informed about the state the world is in. As such, the people of Artiquit request assistance in becoming connected to the world wide web. To the people of Artiquit, knowledge is a valuable commodity, and the technology to pursue such knowledge is of great value, and we would trade much for it. Any offers for the commodities mentioned in the introduction will be reviewed and appreciated. We officially send our greetings and thank you for reading through this.

Sincerely yours,

Conan Gabe, president of the People's Republic of Artiquit

FROM THE DESK OF IMPERATOR GNAEUS MUNDUS I
TO- PRESIDENT CONAN GABE

Dear Mr. President,
I am glad to see your nation coming into its own and becoming a player in international events. Your national philosophies and those of Belkaros are not dissimilar, and hope to build a strong relationship of cooperation and sharing in the future. Your need for information technology can easily be met by the Imperium of Belkaros, and if you would care to establish trade agreements to that effect, that can easily be arranged. I hope to see your nation grow in the years to come, and hope Belkaros can become part of that growth.

Yours,
Gnaeus Mundus I,
Emperor of Belkaros

To Gnaeus Mundus I, Emperor of Belkaros:

Thank you for your reply. I am sorry I could not reply as promptly as I wished; I was out of my office surveying the island of Artiquit. In particular, I had to decide whether a company should be allowed to tear down part of our rain forest in order to mine uranium. Our rain forests are quite beautiful, and I invite you to have a tour of them. We have several species of plant and animal life that are not found anywhere else in the world.

As for the prospect of trade, we are prepared to offer US$3,500,000 worth of produce and diamonds (rather good quality, averaging 2ct each) for enough servers for government databases and for setting up several internet service providers, connecting to the global satellite network. We will also require a few thousand miles worth of fiber-optic cables to span the island. In addition to all of that, our nation's scientific population asks for enough supplies to set up enough laboratories for a healthy scientific research community. They are offering to share all their research with whomever grants them the resources they require. We also wish to start trading our resources (cacao, coffee, coconuts, bananas, seafood, etc.) for other resources such as grain, livestock, and other foods. Please let us know whether these offers are acceptable, or if they're not, what would be acceptable.

Sincerely yours,
Conan Gabe, President of the People's Republic of Artiquit

To: Conan Gabe, President of the People Republic of Artiquit
From: Siegfried von Kreuzberg, Foreign Minister of the Grand Duchy of Phanar

The Grand Duchy of Phanar welcomes the People's Republic of Artiquit to the international stage; recognizing its independence as valid and its government's authority over its citizens. We are interested in establishing full diplomatic relations with your nation; and some people have expressed interest in learning about your government system; one of our television shows has, I admit, satirized your government system but meant it only as a joke. Regardless, I hope that it will not affect the possibility of establishing relations between us.

In order to establish the exchanging of embassies and the creation of a trade agreement, we wish to send Eva Kaden to your nation as the ambassador to Artiquit; she can meet with you personally or your nation's Foreign Minister to discuss relations. Miss Kaden is prepared to move to Artiquit whenever you are ready to accomodate her.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me; I would be glad to provide you with answers. The Phanarian nation looks forward to creating a strong and fruitful relationship between the people of Artiquit and the people of the Grand Duchy.

Dear S. von Kreuzberg, Foreign Minister of the Grand Duchy,

The people of the People's Republic of Artiquit are a learned people, focused on logic and understanding. Even if the television show was not just satire, we still would not mind. You might compare the people of Artiquit to Vulcans, from the television series "Star Trek", except the people of Artiquit do not hide all emotions, as Vulcans do.

You may send Eva Kaden over whenever you are ready. We have an empty house near the nation's capitol building, she may move there. I myself find the house quite nice, but if Eva does not like it, she may look around the city for other houses, we have plenty.

My people and I also look forward to creating a strong relationship with you.

Sincerely yours,
Conan Gabe, President of the People's Republic of Artiquit
