When Provoçe was nearly toppled (July 1990)

Bulgislavia
24-02-2008, 11:45
Bulgislavia was one of the last remaining communsit states left in Europe. 6 months earlier, Romania's Nicolae Ceausescu, Bulgislavia's closest friend was toppled in a violent revoltuion.

Provoçe was not going to let such a revolution happen in Bulgislavia. In November 1989 Provoçe declared all Foriegners to be a danger to the state and Banned all Tourism, The law was only removed in 1998 after fully party power had been restored. In 1989 Bulgislavia suffered no unrest what so ever it appeard Bulgislavia did not fall victim to any revolution or suffer any effect of the collapse of their neighbors, However 1990 came around and the Party's possition was not secure

In the early half of 1990 strikes were a common occurance, the Local militia were always called in to break up strikes, arrests were as high as they had ever been since 1953.

on June 8th 1990 Provoçe gave a public speech to an organized crowd of 80,000 that there would be no reforms and that the Bulgislavian system would survive and the party would continue to serve the people for many years to come.

Then on June 24th 1990 Bulgislavia saw its largest show of people power to date in the central city of Plethece in which 30,000 citizens refused to work and came out onto the streets to demonstrate against the government.

The local peoples militia were called out from all around Plethece to crush the demonstration. Riots took over the city, buildings were burned and the Peoples Library lost all its party literature to the flames. The militia were brutal. In the end even the military were called in to Plethece to clean up the mess and finally on 30th June after 6 days of intense violence the military had complete control of the city. Thousands were arrested held in large holding pens in the outskirts.

Provoçe chose not to take any responsibility and never spoke about the subject the party's biggest concern at the time was the pull out of Soviet Aide which dropped by 40% that year. It began on the 3rd of July small scale strikes had crippled Terrevesti the capital city only to be quickly crushed and thier leaders taken to Leseçearno to be tortured and then executed.

...........................................11:30 am 3rd July 1990...............................

In one of Terrevesti's smallest public square some protesters were sitting in the center of the Square. they numbered only 400. The leader had a small megaphone

"Our party must look at the recent events. they must take the people seriously. We can not let them treat on our diginity any longer! They will try to silence us, Ceausescu is gone now its Provoçe that must go!"

With that the crowd of 400 raised thier fists chanting

"Wake Up Provoçe! Your gone! Party Resign! dont turn your guns against the people!"

Police officers had already taken notice of the large group and had surrounded it. Regular citizens were coming out of their apartments and stood next to the police pleading with them.

"Your apartments are dim too! you are hungry just like us! join us!"

Some of the police panicked and threw thier hats to the ground and ripped off thier badges. The crowd with was now over 430 began moving around the square and spread out. Some people moved around the demonstrators handing them bandana's with FREEDOM and LIBERTY written on them in which the demonstrators tied them around thier foreheads.

Strikers from around the city had heard of the demonstration and instead of protesting outside thier place of work moved to the Square to join the 450 demonstrators. Police Officers were called out and they lined the side's of the roads, Some of them forming human chains to block the road.

by midday the crowd was 1,113 strong. They waved the Bulgislavian flag and sang old songs and chanted democratic chants and anit- Provoçe chants.

The crowd then moved up the square. The police were quite terrified they removed thier hats and ran in the opposite direction to get away while others joined the crowd. The ones that remained loyal were pushed to the ground and some people kicked at them screaming "Fascists!"

The crowd continued to roll up the wide Boulavard marching with thier chants, flags and banners. They were heading for the Grand Public square, Provoçe Square before the Hall of the Party. The grand square had a central 13 meter high statue of provoçe in the center. it was capable of containing over 200,000 people.

.,.......................2:03 pm 3rd July 1990 .................................................................

Over 11,156 demonstrators were now heading up the Workers Victory Boulavard up to the Grand Square before the Hall of the Party the center of power. More policemen were amougst the demonstrators chanting with them.

The Demonstrators were ecstatic to find another 10,000 protesters had already gathered on the Provoçe Square to meet them. They joined up and gathered before the Hall of the Party.

The 21 thousand demonstrators faced the great Hall and broke protraits of Provoçe before the step's in a great heap of wooden frames and ripped up Provoçe faces. The demonstrators then began chanting in unison

"Glasnost here! Provoçe Go! Where is our Revolution!" and "If not in 1989 then 1990!"

Some loyal police men were setting up a set of microphones on the Balcony of the Hall of the Party and some large speakers surrounding the roof's of the apartments around the square.

.....................................By 4:30 pm....................................................

the crowd was now 43,000 strong. Peoples had ripped up the Provoçe plaque dedicating the central statue to him and roped were strung around the statues neck ready to topple it. The demonstration leaders stood on a a bonet of a car that had been brought in by the demonstrators. They started giving instructions to the mob

"Stand your ground this government will not crush us or silence us!"

At 4:35 government officials (Not Provoçe) emerged from the balcony on the Hall of the Party. They had direct view of the square. They began speaking despite the crowd of over 43 thousand screaming and shoutiung and cursing them

"Comrades....Comrades please be calm! I know we are all frustrated, The problem is not our system but the West, They have caused the disorder and the shortages, they want to crush our......."

The official on the balcony heard nothing but thousands of screaming from the crowd below.

"Comrades.... Please..... Go to your homes, your country need co-operation, we still have allies we will not fall, We will bring in tha tanks!" the Official then left the microphone. Vice President Çerana came out and spoke in the Microphones

"Loyal and Dedicated Bulgislavian's we all support Communism, we are all for our cause, Are you for our cause, It has been voted on in the Party you all have 72 hours to vacate the square, Do not force the hand of the party we swore an outh to fight for Communism, You have been told"

Vice President Çerana left the balcony as did the other officials

....................................8:08 pm.............................................................

Foriegn journalists were now on the square with thier camera's picking up the situation and interviewing the few Bulgilsavian's that knew any other language

The crowd was over 50,000 with more joining in the demonstration.

Provoçe was to appear on TV's live all around the country to address the country.

At 8:30 the TV's came on with Provoçe standing infront of a blue backround in some nicely lit studio with the most senior party members standing behind him, He had his eyes faced down on a peice of paper speaking into some microphones with a more crackled voice then usual

"Dear Comrades, Bulgislavian patriots, You country need you. Today a tragedy has occured, Counter revolutionaries have incited a rebellion in Terrevesti. We ask that all Bulgislavian's remain calm and not to worry. The party will act to get the situation under control. As of this moment the Aggitators have 72 hours to vacate the square before the Peoples Army of Bulgislavia is called in.... We ask that the Demonstrators surrender peacefully and understand if they stop now they will not be punished, thank you"

The transmission then ended but it was now being played on radio and was repeated across Provoçe square on the speakers.

Hillary Tindle was a foriegn correspndent for some western news agency. She was right in the middle of the crowd. She face the camera man with the microphone in her hand and spoke. It was getting dark

"I'm standing here, in Provoçe square, There is an intense mood of Anxiousness the people are worried but are dedicated to stay on, which they see as thier duty, Earlier the square erupted in chants shouting 'liberty, liberty' and 'down with the government'... I spoke to Trajen Çyarna a 22 yearold university student"

It then cut to earlier in the day with the interview. It was the afternoon, thousands of screams were in the backround with thousands being seen chanting and waving banners. A young man with black hair and olive skin with gaunt facial features was facing Hillary Tindle

"Why are you out here today Trajen?" said HIllary

"We are fighting for liberty and justice, this government is terrible, Provoçe is terrible he has to go, It will end up like Romania if he doesnt go peacefully"
Trajen replied loudly trying to be heard over the chanting

"What do you think will happen if Provoçe uses the military?"

"The outside world will act hopefully, If he uses the military the people will lose all faith in Provoçe it might speed up his overthrow but at a terrible expense" said Trajen

"Do you think Provoçe will be forced from power?" asked HIllary

"Nothing is set in stone, he has to go, I mean 28 years! god it is time for him to go!"

The scene then cuts back to the live footage of hillary standing in the darkly lit Square the only light coming from the Hall of the Party with its massive floodlights luminating the face of the Massive Hall.

He's just establishing some backstory for his nation, it would be frightfully rude to butt in don't you think?

The Soviet Socialist Republic of Brzno had never been a particularly peaceful part of the Union. It was a seemingly arbirtrary grouping of three ethnic groups who never really liked each other. The Skgorrians had seized the chance to break away from the USSR during World War Two and had bitterly fought the Soviets alongside the Germans almost right up until the end of the war, the Atopians tried to keep neutral to furhter their own revolution, whilst the Grossetapians fought everyone. After the reconquest of the Brzno region in 1944 the Soviet Socialist Republic of Brzno had been re-established and whilst the Communist Party of Brzno was highly unpopular, the strength of the Red Army and fear of terror kept it in place. However with the growing liberalisation of the Soviet Union and the Kremlin's decision to bow to popular demand and withdraw troops from Brzno proved to be catastrophic to communist power in the country. The National Socialist Brzno People's Party, kept underground since 1944, rose to challenge the domincation of the CPB and with it a large portion of the Catholics in the Skgorrian province. The bulk of the Brznovian armed forces were Skgorrian and loyal to the NSBPP, although their small size did not gurantee the Skgorrians victory against the numerous armed factions that sprung up in opposition. Within a month, Brzno had fractured into its provinces. The Skgorrians and the NSP were prevented from taking the central Grossetape province by a combined effort by the Brzno Anarchist Federation and the Atopian Worker's Party, a nationalistic left-wing group located in the southern Atopia region. The leftist alliance was rapidly dominated by the highly organised Anarchist Federation, which instituted a program of Makhnovist reform in order to ensure a successful revolution. Meanwhile, Grossetape became a battleground. It was fought over by the divided Brzno armed forces and the militias that became rapidly common on all sides. The Grossetapens themselves demanded independence, and fought to achieve this. To the north-west, three smaller provinces united as the 'Federation of Katarznya', and established a centre-right government. The CPB had, by the start of 1990, ceased to exist as a viable force and a bitter civil war gripped the region, one that would not end until 1994.

Amongst the Skgorrians, the news of the plight of the Bulgislavian regime was met with a mixture of glee and apathy. Whilst some were happy that the communists were suffering elsewhere, others considered it far more important to secure the future of National Socialism in Skgorria. Provoçe's name was known in Brzno at large and had sometimes even been used as a defence by the CPB by them saying "see? At least we're not as bad as him." An emergency meeting was called on the 3rd of July to discuss what would be done about the Bugislavian situation.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Extract from the minutes of the Cabinet meeting of the NSBPP on 3rd July 1990

Minister for Weapons, Munitions, and Armament ...and in short, unless we can restore production to the Skgorrian Munitions Works, we will be unable to mount any sort of effective defense, let alone offense. Military support for any of the Bugislavians is impossible on a practical level, however desirable it may be from an ideological point of view.

Interior Ministry I concur. There is no way we can even begin to compute any sort of offensive action against the Bugislavian regime whilst our existence is threatened on two fronts.

The Fuhrer And what does the Minister of Foreign Deployments and Occupation think?

Minister of Foreign Deployments and Occupation Quite frankly, my job is a disgrace and I'm surprised you even bothered to create a Ministry for me.

(Prolonged silence)

The Fuhrer Ah well, that cannot be helped. Though my generals assure me that our foes are on the verge of collapse...

Minister of Foreign Deployments and Occupation (Interrupts the Fuhrer)You told us that the Atopians, Grosstapians and Katarznyians were so weak they would never rise in the first place. Thanks to our mindless prattle, the light of the Skgorrian race may go out. To hell with you Olgich, to hell with you! *(Leaves room and door slams)

The Fuhrer So, no aid for the Bugislavians then? Well I'll issue a nice firey speech, if nothing else it will irritate that dinosaur Provoçe

*The Minister of Foreign Deployments and Occupation was subsequently detained and executed for treason

Official Communique from the Skgorrian Foreign Ministry

Provoçe! You are a guttersnipe, a coward and a Jew. Burn you filthy waste of skin, all people will cheer when your body is left to rot out in the open as food for the crows.

Sieg Heil!

......................4th July 11:00 am ............................................................................

Provoçe inspcted the letter which the foriegn ministry passed on to him from Skgorria, he found it quite ammusing and his office was filled with party officials,

"A jew he calls me? filthy waste of skin!? whom is he talking about!? hahahahha"

he threw the note on the table and the rest of the party officials gave a resereved and caustious laugh

"Comrade President. the demonstrators have grown in stregnth none of them are going home, now the estimate is 100,000 on Provoçe Square, bellow and 80,000 more are on strike elsewhere around the country we need action"

Provoçe stood up. he looked over at a report stating 4 people had died in clashes with the police in a western city in Bulgislavia.

...................................................................................................
Back on the square the square was alive with the chatter of people debating, speaking freely, a group of about 400 university students had begun a hunger strike and held massive signs promoting thier cause

Already the mob had brutally bashed up 5 people suspected of spying for Cigouriva, they were now in intensive care but other cases called of other attacks against suspected Cigouriva.

12:00 pm ...................................................................................................

Provoçe gave a live announcement on TV and Radio stating that the Protesters time had been cut and now had 24 hours to vacate the square.

The protesters blocked out the message by singing a pre-war banned song.
Provoçe was losing control of the country with every hour he allowed the demonstration but he didnt want to make teh same mistake as Ceausescu and taht was just to begin fireing onto the crowds at the first sign of dissent.

.................................................................................................... ..

"Comrade President call in the army we risk losing complete control if we allow it to continue" spoke out a senior party member

"Thats what Ceausescu did and look how he ended up? we have to be careful..... We have given them time to think about thier actiona nd given an ultimatum now we just have to wait....Then we will follow the right steps for stability"

Isa, as I understand this, Bugislavia is just trying to tell a story about some previous events that occurred in his nation and has kept this thread open for reactions and to flesh his story out a bit. If it helps, consider this to be a history book that Bugislavia is reading to the class ;)

(OOC: it doesnt make sense to invade a small country with no natural resources for something like suppressing a crowd. No one invaded Ceausescu's Romania when he fired on the demonstrators in 1989, No one invaded China in 1989 with the Tiananamen square, NO one even invaded north korea in 1998 when strikers were suppressed there, Hardly anybody knows about the 1998 strike in North Korea, and NO BODY invaded Myanmar when they suppressed the bhuddist monks and demonstrators last august or when they suppressed demonstrators in 1988 after refusing to acknoledge election results and WHY would countries go to the trouble to invade a small country like Bulgislavia? besides some countries on nation states have made much worse stuff, like that country where the dictatoir chooses who marries who and all that stuff anyway on with the rp)

.......................5th July 1990.................................................................

9:30 am. Terrevesti's streets were now linned with Tanks on either side of the wide 4 lane boulavards and avenue's. Road blocks were being set up. Martial law had been declared and Cigouriva agents were taking up positions on the roof tops and in the ally's... Provoçe square was surrounded by the military.

the square was packed with over 130,000 demonstrators. Some of the demonstrators had fainted due to lack of water and the het of the sun. Doctors were blocked from going to thier aide. although many doctors had joined the demonstration and were in the square tending to the small injuries of the demonstrators brought on by the heat, sun, lack of food and water and some Severly beaten Cigouriva agents who were found infiltrating the demonstrators

they had 1 hour and 30 minutes before hell would break lose. The crowd were relying on the army joining the demonstration as was the case in Romania.

The rest of the country was calming down. Strikes were being disperssed and thier leaders were arrested or dissapeard. Other smaller demonstrators were rounded up and brutally suppressed with the deathtoll standing at 26

A new development in the crisis in the country was the hundreds of desperate and scared Bulgislavian's rushing the border to flee into Neighboring countries like Romania and Bulgaria, they usually did it in large groups and mobs to rush the gates and trample the border guards to the neighboring countries.

In the Hall of the Party, Provoçe was calm he didnt believe the system would be overthrown. He was in his lavish office, with an expensive wooden desk imported from some exotic country with large, leather sofa's and seats and a nice, chandelier on the roof. The red, velvet drapes were closed as to block out the view of the mob on the square Below. He was meeting with Vice President Çerana

"What will be the fallout after this situation is over? give me the numbers and details" demanded Provoçe

"Cigouriva estimate over 5000 might die, in a worst case senario possibly 8000, The political fallout will be enourmous, The soviets are Pulling out thier aide quickly now, The rest of the world is showing hostility, The years ahead are going to be hard, extremely hard, we are preparing for a Famine should all our donors drop out, We only have enough food to survive 8 month's without any aide, If we ration the food to the extreme we may survive 1 year and 2 months but after that we will have to depend on what we have in our country which is only enough to keep 2 Million of the 5 million people fed"
depressingly said Çerana

"ok, ok I'll read the reports I dont want to hear it anymore...... Should..."
Provoçe hesitated then went back to some reports and instructed the Vice President to follow thorugh with the plans and give the instructions to the military leaders on the ground

10am July 5th 1990............................................

All of the nations discontent was concentrated in Terevesti and Provoçe square. The Rest of the country was stable. Martial law and a state of emergency had been declared.

Large ammounts of soldiers were stationed in all of the major centers, curfew had been installed and Soldiers and armoured vehicles were patrolling the border to stop people leaving the country.

Up until now the demonstrations had been non violent. Hardly anybody had been killed the number was not in the triple digits yet.

The USA had issued a statement "It looks like Bulgislavia's time has come"
which the Bulgislavian Workers Party dismissed. Almost everyone outside of Bulgislavia believed that Provoçe would be overthrown.

Hillary Tindle was driving in a van which had "PRESS" written over it to show its nature as harmless. The camera crews shot footage of tanks, armoured vehicles and soldiers forming gangs across the road but the closer the van got to Provoçe square the more the side of the roads were filled with people standing along the side of the road chanting
"Liberty! Liberty! Liberty!"

the demonstrators had one hour left.

When the van pulled over and stoped at Provoçe square Hillary stepped out.
The camera crews captured more footage of chanting demonstrators. What was left of the Provoçe Statue in the center of the square was just some broken legs. the rest of the body had been pulled down onto the square where some protesters were sitting on it.

................................10:12am July 5th 1990.................................................
The mood in Provoçe's office was extremely tense it seemed to get worse with every passing minute. Provoçe was determined he would not leave the Hall of the Building.

"Whats the word from Moscow!?" snapped Provoçe

"We havnt recieved anything, Soviet radio is condeming us and that we must bow to change" said one of the Aides

"Ready the Military, Any sign of the Military disobeying orders have the soldiers shot. The Cigouriva will remain loyal. This system MUST survive!"

"Comrade President. should the demonstrators storm the Hall of the Party should we make plans of our escape?" said the Aide

"Keep the underground tunnels open, They will take us to Leseçearno the Cigouriva HQ where we will have our second base of command, should that fail they will have a Helicopter ready to take us to North Korea of Albania but that will not happen we WILL get this situation under control!" said Provoçe

.........................................................................................
10:28am 5th July 1990

The military began to move in on the square. Cigouriva and the Military had recieved the order. From the rooftops above Provoçe square the Cigouriva began to fire down on the people

Hillary was standing speaking infront of the camera

"It appears the people and Government are facing off......." Hillary was cut off by the sound of gunfire, panic and screams

"Shit GET OUT OF HERE!" she screamed.

She and her crew pushed past dozens of confused and panicked civilians. The Cigouriva still fired on the square. Armoured vehicles rushed into the square firing into the crowds and running groups of people down.

Hillary and her camera crew reached the van where they quickly got inside and started it up. Some people noticed the vehicle and began to swamp it

"Let us in! Let us in!" they screamed. The camera men opened the vans back doors and let some people in before driving off. They sped off down the Workers Party Victory Boulavard passing tanks and sodliers which let the Media van pass.

Panic spread all across the city with thousands of people scattering in all directions smashing shop windows to try and seek refuge inside.

The rest of the city was calm. it was all concentrated in Provoçe Square.

Soldiers and Cigouriva inspected some factories. the small number of striking outside of some workplaces were broken up and arrested.

..........................12:39pm July 5th 1990...............................................

The military stopped Hillary's media van down some wide avenue that was blocked off by tanks and road blocks.

"You have Bulgislavians in your truck! get out! get them out!" orderd the sodlier

They opened the back doors and the soldiers dragged the Bulgislavians out onto the street

"You too get out of the van!" they ordered to Hillary and her Camera Crews.

"You are going to leave this country!" the soldiers took the journalists and bundled them into a military truck. As they drove off they saw the soldiers line the Bulgislavian's up in the middle of the street and then the truck went around the corner. what became of the Bulgislavian's Hillary didnt know she tried to block it out of her head, she was terrified.

The order had been given to collect up the bodied immediatly and cremate them as soon as possable.

.................................................................................................... .
2pm 5th july 1990

"Foriegn journalists are being rounded up and sent out of the country. The soviets have announced that they will pull out all thier aide by the end of 1992 unless we bow to change, The americans are also refusing to do any future trade deals with us" said the Aide to Provoçe

"Damn that Gorbachev!........How many people have died?" asked Provoçe

"Cigouriva counts are up to 560 and still rising"

....................................................................................................

6pm 5th July 1990

Radio, TV and News Papers were not producing anything by governemt order until the situation had settled down.
The streets were scarily calm with shots heard echoing in a distance all around Terevesti. Soldiers and Tanks still patrolled the streets. most of the bodies had been removed.

"Comrade President we must release a statement to the outside world" said the Aide

"What are you going to say?"

"That the death toll is at 800 and that the government has everything under control"

"what is the real deathtoll?" asked Provoçe

"Its believed to be as high as 2,500" said the Aide

............................6:00am July 6th 1990..............................

The sun was starting to rise over Terevesti. The Regime had survived another day. The streets were occupied by the tanks, armoured vehicles and soldiers with no civilians present.

Hillary was being held at the Terevesti International Airport with over 1500 other foriegners

"And sir where are you from?" asked Hillary (She and her crew were still allowed for report freely suprisingly)

"I'm from Canada... I cant believe what is going on here its rediculous! They banned tourism but they decided to allow me in after I paid more to them and now they want to thorw me out!"

"What happened do you mind telling us?"

"We were staying in the Grand Terevesti International Hotel when at about 6pm soldiers busted into the room and took us into military transports to get us to the airport where we have been held ever since waiting for a plane to get us the hell out of here!"

"What made you travel to Bulgislavia in the first place?"

"I wanted to see behind the Iron Curtain before the revolutions destroyed them all"

"Do you think Provoçe will be toppled?" asked Hillary

"Unfortunatly I'll have to say no.... Yesterday I would of thought yes but unlike Ceausescu's Romania, the Military are on the governments side"

Hillary turned back to the camera

"For years Both Provoçe and the Outside world believed, Bulgislavian's were a politically apathetic and docile people that would endure any hardship with little resistance but recent events have shaken that belief!" said Hillary reporting into the camera

..............................................................................................
By 8am the planes had all the foriegners airborn bound for some airports across the border.

The Terevesti demonstrations were public knowledge all over the Country despite the block off all media and information. It sparked a small demonstration of 2,500 in Creçea which the military supressed with 112 deaths and a demonstration in Craasi with over 8,000 demonstrators which again the military supressed with a reported 310 deaths

Small strikes were all that remained of the resistance and by 8pm July 6th 1990 all opposition to the government had been crushed...........
