The Storm of the Century

In the Heart of Neko-Opolis lied it's capital of Oykott. It was a capital unlike many because it wasn't situated near the coast line like many other national capitals in coastal countries. Another unusual quirk, while it was home to the Royal Family and the National Congress it didn't host the nation's President or the Chief Advisory Staff. That was in the town of Keiko some 3500 miles away.

The city has always been the capital since the primitive and ainchent days of NEP, it's seen the transition to common wealth, to dictatorship, to monarchy, to constitutional monarchy. It was the heart of commerce and held 1/3 of the nations population. It's also had it's share of some nasty weather. Gales, heavy rains, from disbanding hurricanes, and of course tornadoes. However the last large tornado hit the city in 1900 killing thousands. While there have been a few small ones here and there since then, it really has never had a direct hit by anything larger than EF2 since the twister of 1900.

The city held rich and poor alike, newlyweds, couples that seem to have seen the passing of century's together.

It felt like an ordinary morning for weatherman Austin Kato, a normal human meteorologist and one of the most respected in this area of study. As he sat down to take a look at the radar he noticed a very strong storm system moving towards them. "Wow, that's looking strong."

"What do we have here, Austin?" His assistant asked.

"Looks like a strong but minor storm system...but oh wait, what is that?"

"Looks like a front is coming up from the south."

"My lord, they are on a collision course."

"Forgive my ignorance sir, but what happens if they collide?"

"Sasha, you have an already powerful storm in motion and you add jet fuel to it, you have one hell of a storm. We could see several if not one major tornado from this."

"This could be a long day."

"We should issue a watch right away."

Sasha typed in the details of the watch issued for the entire city. If a storm hit, it would be bad. Was the city ready? The heart of the commerce industry, the economy would take a hit that's for sure.

Queen Suzuhara never really minded being nothing more than a figure head. as a little girl the Monarch changed and gave power to the Republican Powers. For one part of her life her parents proudly stated she would become the ruler of the country. Well not anymore, but that was fine. Misaki didn't yearn for the power. She had four other children to care for now, with her oldest out of the house and off at college. Her children were playing around while she watched the weather channel, noticing there was a Sever Thunderstorm Warning, and a Tornado Watch. She was a little nervous but she had never seen anything more than a breeze strike the city. "Excuse me madam, it's your daughter."

"Ayako! What are you doing calling honey? How's school, is everything okay? Are you getting enough sleep? Are you eating, you haven't caught a cold have you?" She said in a sweet and excited tone. Always the mother she was.

"Mom relax I'm fine. But I'm worried about you though. I've been seeing some reports of sever weather back home. They say it's heading your way."

"Oh there's nothing for you to worry about hon. We've had weather like this before."

"Not like this. Not as bad as they are predicting. Maybe I should come home."

"No honey, you don't need to come home. We're all fine here you should worry about your school work."

"I do mama, but I worry about all of you back home. Maybe I should have stayed in NP."

"You wanted to study abroad, and I that is what you are doing now. You should be happy. Now you just calm your self and worry about keeping up."

"Yes mama."

"Love you honey. Stay safe."

"Always."

"Where are we going?" Asked an excited Shino. A young newly wed very pregnate with her first child sitting in a car blindfolded.

"You will see soon Shino." Her husband Koichi said.

They arrived in a nice suburban neighborhood. "Here we are." He ran around and helped Shino out. He removed the blindfold, Shino's face lit up with suprise.

"You're kidding! You better not be messing with me!"

"No Shino, it's ours!"

"Aaah! We finally got a house?! I can't believe it!"

"It's ours, we can move in now. Actually I've had everything delivered here already and unpacked."

"Unpacked, that would have cost us."

"You know the doctors orders, no heavy lifting."

"Come on, I'll show you to the master bed room."

"Forget that, do we have a room for the baby?"

"Of course, I'll show you the nursery first then."

He took Shino up the stairs and into the nursery. A crib was waiting there to be filled with their first child. It was painted and had toys nicely placed into a toy box.

"It's perfect. It's perfect."

As the day drew on so did the ever increasing storm threat. A young single mother, Yuka, living in the more shanty area of town. She was poor and raising her small daughter Akiko. She watched her daughter play in the small front yard looking up at the pending storm. "Come on babe, it's gonna storm."

"Yes mama!"

She picked her daughter up and took her inside. The storm was already beginning now. Akiko was already desiring to curle up with her mother as they watched Television together. Frequent storm warnings were scrolling at the bottom, but neither of them could read so they paid no attention to it. "It's time to put you to bed, honey."

"Ah mama..."

"Now, now, you have to sleep."

"But I'm scared."

"Oh honey, nothing to be scared of. Come on now. I love you." She kissed her.

"I love you too."

Ayako couldn't keep her mind on studying she kept worrying about her family back home. She was the oldest thus she was the heir to the throne. She kept following the weather very closely and kept on trying to reach her mother back home. "Are you sure?"

"Yes ma'am, all phone lines are down as a result of the storm."

"Thank you, I'll try again later."

Just outside the capital city the monster emerged from the clouds, illuminated by constant lighting it wasn't the extremely huge kind of tornado but it was certainly big enough to do some serious damage. Austin was watching this slow motion train wreck all from his radar. He went live on the radio and TV to give the Tornado Warning.

"We now have touch down of one major tornado, and we have three potentially active super cells converging on the greater county area which can produce a spawn of several other moderate-to-sever twisters. Please take shelter immediately, this is now a tornado emergency."

Shino and her husband Koichi weren't strangers to weather like this. They grew up with it. But tonight however they were rather more naive about the potential of the weather. They didn't have a radio, just the TV and they relied on the sirens. But the town sirens failed and this was growing increasingly closer and closer taking what ever it had in it's path way. Shino was awakened by the baby kick. "Ooh." Taking a look out the window she woke her husband up. "I don't like this at all. It's really bad."

"What do you want to do, take cover?"

"Perhaps we should."

"Okay, I'll get everything, you go down."

Shino managed her way down a few steps before everything went to hell. Things were flying around striking her ocassionally, things were getting ripped away by the approaching vortex. Her husband helped her up and they threw themselves into a closet, their meager means of protection. It passed in no time tearing up more and more of the city, houses, businesses, cars were being tossed around like little blocks.

Misaki shook all her children awake and urged them out of bed. "Come on, come on." She tried her best to remain calm and firm in her guidance, to not frighten her younger kids.

"What's happening?"

"We need to take shelter, everyone in here." She urged them into a bedroom that was windowless. It was one of the several bedrooms in the palace which would be able to withstand the storm. Still Misaki didn't want to take any chances. "Come on everyone get against the wall." She lifted the mattress and made a small fortress of blankets and pillows to protect them. She huddled everyone together and pulled them all close to her.

"My ears heart mama!" Her youngest cried.

"I know honey, it will be okay."

"Mom, what's that sound." Her boy asked.

She didn't want to answer she just pulled them close and hoped for the best. But she knew her people wouldn't be as fortunate. Many were likely in bed just like her family was, and many didn't have the space and strong structure they did.

The twister was pressing forward at a deadly and alarming rate.

Yuka was waken out of a deep sleep by a neighbor calling for her to take cover. She raced to grab her little one from bed and no sooner was the house shaking and she was being slammed against the wall. Her small child was on the floor, clearly she wasn't conscious. She managed to grab her and throw her self into a bathroom.

National Defense Center, Keiko

The center was on full alert from last night's ravage of a twister. "What are we looking at here?"

"Possible EF5 Tornado struck sometime between 22-2300 hours last night, town sirens failed completely, a warning of about six minutes was issued with a 12 hour watch in addition, to that. An Tornado Emergency was declared."

"Are we mobile?"

"Mobile sir, military guard units are en route to the city, but we are having trouble."

"Trouble?"

"The twister left a large derbies field clogging many of the roadways, some roads are impassible and this includes side streets."

"Get APC's and tanks, and helicopters if you have to. Any word on the Royal Family?"

"Nothing, though the Palace seems to have sustained the least amount of damage."

"Noted. President informed?"

"Informed and preparing an adress before he tours the scene."

"My fellow citizens, and those of the world, as you know by know a devastating storm has struck. There are many who will be in great need of help. I ask all citizens to pool their energy, time and money to help your fellow citizens in this time of need. I also want to assure your elected officials are doing everything they can to solve this problem right away. My next address will be from the Capital. Good day and god speed."
