Too much McFancy's? (ATTN EA|MT|Open)

Dutch-Ruled Benelux
04-02-2008, 22:43
Royal Palace,
Amsterdam
approximately 18:00
Monday Febuary 4, 2008

"And what are we having for dinner tonight, Sophie?" asked the King, jokingly. He knew it was the traditional dinner.

"Why roast beef of course." teasingly answered the Queen.

"In how long?"

"Oh, a couple minutes."

"I don't feel like eating just now, my chest is hurting."

"Are you alright though, dear?"

"No, actually, I think I should lie down..."

At approximately 18:04 on the 4th of Febuary in the year of 2008, King Willem died of a heart attack. He promptly rushed to the hospital and pronounced dead on arrival. The cause was soon discovered to be cardiac arrest. Now former Prince of Oranje, Grand Duke of East Luxembourg, Willem VI is King. Queen Consort Sophie left a widow. King Willem VI has decided to send out a message to all nations, particularly Miamoria, Bithunia, Calzorinstan, ----Kenny----, Nova Pictavia, Yanitaria, Corbournne, No Taxes, Kabavian, Hectonia, Binaria, Oily Prata, Torvque, The Beatus, Stoklomolvi, West Scandia and Fjordenberg

Message:

From: His Royal Majestic Highness, King Willem VI of Oranje, new King of the Koninkrijk der Benelux
To: The World but the EA especially
Subject: My New found Kingship and the death of my father

As you may or may not now be aware of, my father is dead. He died of a heart attack and now I am King and my mother a widow. I am a libertarian, just like my father and will keep his laws in place. I shall save my speech on my father for the funeral which I invite you to attend. It shall be held in Den Haag and the whole airport will be cleared on the day of his funeral for his arrival.

Not only do I invite you to my father's funeral but also to my coronation to take place the day after. There shall be a ball that evening and I hope in the afternoon we can discuss international relations. Not only relations between countries but personal relations as well. While I know many of you run republics I also know of nations who run kingdoms and empires and I am looking for a wife. Should any of you wish to bring your royal daughters and/or sisters I shall be pleased to meet them.

Grow and Prosper Everyone,
Willem VI,
King of the Dutch Kingdom of the Benelux,
House of Oranje

As the boy, no older than 13, walked into the room, he saw the leader. He bowed to the ground and said " Master, the deed is done, they think it was a heart attack. Willem is dead." "Good" said the master. "Now go, to the coronation of the new king, give him my message, that Mutants shall live in freedom under his rule, unlike his fathers, or he shall meet a simaler fate." "It shall be done, my master."

King Erik II, the traditional monarch of West Scandia, read the letter somberly. A death in one of Atlantica's royal lines was always a great loss. He placed the letter on his desk, and paced out into the Great Hall.

His 25-year-old daughter, Princess Kærasta, however, strode into the King's study, announcing: "Father, the Steward of Mayenshire is here to...What's this?", she inquired to no one as she picked up the letter.

Looking for a wife, she thought.

It was of course expected for her to marry another member of a noble family. Why not Wilhelm? He was attractive, intelligent enough, and Father would certainly approve.

"Mayella!" she called for the maidservant, "Arrange for a flight to the Benelux."

The flight was easily arranged, through Royal Dutch Air of xourse the primary passenger airline for the large and in charge ((OOC: just had to say that)).

Princess Kærasta looked up from her piece of classical Scandian literature, and gazed out of the plane window. She could see the dikes and polders of the Dutch coastline below.

She shut her book once the pilot announced their impending arrival. Shutting her eyes, she laid back in her chair as the plane descended towards the airfield.

OOC: I figured it out by accident, actually (It's Alt+ 0230 on mine), and then just got hooked with the more extended forms of our wonderful Latin alphabet. "Kærasta" means "girlfriend" in Icelandic.

IC:

Kærasta thanked the driver, and then walked into the hotel with her freind Gwendolyn, Lady of Tørsingur. Some of the coronation and funeral guests she remembered from tea gatherings in the Royal Parlour.

"So, Kærrie, when're ye going t' meet the King? Ye'd better do it soon, before some one beats ye to the prize. These fareign nobles go rather fast, I warn ye," he friend joked in an Irish-sounding accent.

"Come on, Gwen. I'm sure that King Willem's smart enough to look at his choices first."

The two went to their lavish room, and unpacked their various garments that they'd brought for the ceremonies. Black gowns and cloaks for the funeral, and expensive dresses of Kiravian making for the coronation.

Greetings. It is unfortunate to hear that your father has passed away from a heart attack and I, a monarch who has lost her father to a similar fate (heart failure), extend my condolences to you and your family during this tragedy. I will not be able to attend either the funeral or the coronation but a representative of Neo-Ixania can be sent if possible. The secretary entered into the study of the basileus, his head bowed low, placing the envelope neatly on the aged wooden desk. "Majesty," the secretary began, still keeping his eyes to the ground, "This just arrived from Benelux. Dire news sir."

Nikodemous glanced at the envelope, and continued with the paperwork he was doing. "You may leave." he told the secretary, rather offhandedly. But once the secreatary had left the study, Nikodemous reached for the envelope, and gingerly opened it. His fingers unfolded the parchment as he began to read. "What a shame..." he muttered to himself, "what a shame."

To: His Royal Majestic Highness, King Willem VI of Koninkrijk der Benelux
From: His Imperial Holiness, Basileus Nikodemous I Kristodoulos

I am greatly troubled friend at this mournful news. It is indeed sad. Your father was not yet in his gray years, where his passing would be a joyous occasion. But instead, he has passed in the middle of life's journey, not having yet completed the course.

Never-the-less, this is also a great opportunity. An opportunity for you to make your own mark on the world, and become the kind man that you are destined for. I am sure the Dutch people are in safe hands, and I have every confidence in you.

On another note, I am bringing my brother Josephus and my cousin Krista. You will agree that Krista is a very attractive young woman, just beginning the prime of her life. But we will leave matters of romance for later. They are coming with me to pay their respects to your father. My uncle Kristof regrets to inform you that he cannot come due to failing health, but he sends his regards and condolences.

Highest Regards & Sympathies,

His Imperial Holiness (HIH),

Nikodemous I Kristodoulos

With the finishing touches of the pen on the parchment, Nikodemous ordered his secretary to deliver the message to King Willem VI immediately, and to arrange for a private flight to Dutch Benelux within two hours. As the secretary was leaving, Nikodemous called his brother and cousin on their cell phones informing them of their immediate departure.

"Alexei! An urgent letter!"

"What is it now, Grigor? Another war?"

"No, brother it-"

"Another tinpot democracy passing silly liberal laws?"

"No, no, it's-"

"Another national leader dead from a cardiac arrest because of he or she, perhaps, ate too much rubbish and fell over dead?"

"No it- wait what?"

"Let me guess, it's Benelux isn't it."

"Well, yes it is. How did you know?"

"How could I NOT know?! The entire Kremlin is in an uproar over it. That's why you need to get up earlier, Grigor. Getting up at 0800 hours just isn't good enough. I got up at 0600 hours."

"Well, I actually got up at 0600 hours as well, but I was covered with paperwork."

"Very well, send them some condolences. The standard procedure. I will be visiting them alongside everyone else does."

"Right."

The Commissar sighed.

"And there goes another sane man..."

"I don’t think I will be able to make it." wheezed the old regent as he lay almost motionless within his bed, sitting at his side the last remaining heir to his throne, a 20 year old prince by the name of Edward.
"You know, my money was on me going first." His laugh quickly morphed into a violent string of coughs. The prince hastily handed him his oxygen mask and after a few deep breaths they subsided.
"No, I think you'll have to take this one." he said propping himself up "I’ll mention the situation within the condolence letter. It’ll be good practice for you."
The prince stood up and nodded, "very well father."

While I do not know of this 'dutch-ruled' prefix to my country's name, I do believe it is an accurate yet revolution inspiring adjective. I prefer my realm be called the Koninkrijk, Benelux, the DKB (Dutch Kingdom of the Benelux) or the NKB (Nederlandse Koninkrijk der Benelux).

Thank you for your condolences and your blessings and hope the representative may arrive promptly.

Dear King Willem VI of the Koninkrijk,

My apologies if that is spelled incorrectly, we were unable to find a spelling that so much as half of the internet could agree upon.

It is with sadness that we note the passing of your father, Willem V. Although I myself have never had the pleasure of meeting him, I have admired his work for some time. He was a skilled diplomat, someone that my colleague the Brother-General Cowell spoke very highly of, and it is a sad day when an orator of his stature passes. It is with further regret that we have found nobody of sufficient rank whose schedule allows them to attend his funeral - we felt it only fitting that his death be marked by the presence of a superior official, and indeed still do. Nonetheless, fortune smiles upon those of high spirit, and we are naturally optimistic that your reign will, at the very least, be the equal of your father's. Though we may never see eye-to-eye on matters of social or economic importance, we will nevertheless wish you good tidings and good health for the future.

OOC: I have sent two people to represent Neo-Ixania. Zoya Tokarev is my diplomat and Hedwig von Ungern-Sternberg is my suitor for the King of Benelux; she's related to the House of Schverzinski through her aunt's marriage to Empress Anastasia's father. You can add them both to the guest list.

Zoya Tokarev had recently returned from the People's Republic of Blair Island, she had helped Neo-Ixania make a new friend in the world. After taking a break from being a diplomat, she recieved a letter from the Foreign Ministry which contained a demand to visit Benelux on behalf of the Empire of Neo-Ixania to pay respects to the deceased monarch, Williem V. She also was bringing another woman with her. Hedwig von Ungern-Sternberg was the granddaughter of one of the Empress' mother's sisters. At eighteen years old, she was a German beauty with auburn hair and blue eyes. Packing some items into her briefcase, Zoya Tokarev walked onto the plane waiting for her at the airport; with Hedwig following her. Hedwig did not expect to be accompanying Zoya to the funeral but it was her grandmother who suggested that she meet King Williem VI.

When the plane landed at the airport in Den Haag, Zoya and Hedwig found their way to the hotel and waited for the funeral service to begin. They could see President Norheim of Yanitaria with his guards. Hedwig was completely focused on her thoughts about the King of Benelux while Zoya thought about the funeral; remembering that the Empress of Neo-Ixania had lost her father like the King of Benelux did; at around the same age.

By the time that the message was received, and relayed to Nikodemous, he, his brother, and cousin Krista, were already in the air, and halfway to Benelux. None-the-less, the message did find its way home, and he did appreciate the fact that the new king took the time to respond to his letter personally. Especially instead of some pre-fab template that all the fully democratic countries seemed to be using these days.

But within no time, the plane had landed, and a pre-arranged limousine awaited Nikodemous at the airport. His secretary really did work wonders when it came to getting something, and getting it now. Nikodemous and his family climbed into the limo, and instructed the driver to take them to the Palace, the hotel, not the Royal Estate.

Willem VI entered through the back entrance. Everyone heard the door open and shut. Everyone, including the suitors from West Scandia, Bithunia and Neo-Ixania. Also present were the Yanitarian President, Sébastien, Edward, Cousin Nikodemous, Cousin Josephus and Zoya. They all seemed to be waiting for him and here he was, ready to lead them to the funeral procession. Most of them didn;t know much about Willem V but it was still custom to allow them to say a few words. If one of them stepped up it would allow him to escape the dreaded duty.

He was a tall, handsome man in his early thirties, just a couple years younger than the age his most recent ancestors got coronated at. He had brown hair and blue eyes, had to be careful not to marry someone with brown eyes for the people noticed and felt blue eyes or green eyes were royal and brown were too common. Racist, yes, but still, he didn't have to openly critiscize eye colour.

He was wearing a black tuxedo and nice dress shoes. This was more for the funeral than anything else and he would change into more traditional clothes during the coronation. An elegant cape for sure. He soon cleared his throat and began to make an announcement. For a second there was barely a sound and then he broke the silence.

"Good Day to you all and welcome, as I'm sure you are aware or else you wouldn't be here, my father has died and we are about to have the funeral proceedings. If you will follow me I will take you to the funeral area wear we will have an oppurtunity to say a few words about my dear dad. After the funeral, my servants will guide you to the coronation hall and I will be coronated in front of you all," with that he turned down a hall, expecting the others to follow.

OOC: Zoya is with Hedwig; Neo-Ixania's suitor for King Willem VI.

"Prince Willem is a handsome man..."

Hedwig studied Willem as she walked with Zoya and the other guests to the funeral area. She did not know his father at all but was still ready to give the Prince her condolences; she thought she was handsome and charming but knew that the other girls would be competition. While she thought about the Prince, Zoya Tokarev thought about her own father. He was an elderly man but still alive and being here at the funeral of Willem's father made her think about him; that old man who was the head of Neo-Ixania's dynasty of the Arms Manufacturing industry.

When they arrived at the funeral area, Zoya and Hedwig took their seats. Hedwig would occassionally look at Willem as she waited for the funeral to begin while Zoya's eyes were focused on the coffin. She was a respectful woman and did not know what to say about the deceased monarch if she was asked. "I hope that the Prince and his family will endure this tragedy." Zoya uttered to herself.

Josephus Kristodoulos was off flirting with another girl from some other country, while Nikodemous and Krista were talking.

"Are you sure he is king?"

"Yes Krista, why?"

"He seems too awkward and nervous."

"How would you be if Uncle Kristof died? Never mind. Forget I asked."

"That's right, I wouldn't shed a tear. The old fart."

Regardless of their conversation, they both knew that despite his flaws, Krista loved her father Kristof dearly. But Nikodemous had made his point. Willem was in a horrible state at the moment. But he seemed to be carrying the grief quite well, Nikodemous observed. There was indeed hope on the horizon for the Dutch nation of Benelux. This all being observed as they made the procession into the area where the funeral would be held. There, Nikodemous, Josephus, and Krista took their reserved seats. Regardless of how far down along the line, and how many centuries had passed, the Dutch Royalty were family to the Kristodoulos. And they would be treated as such.

Sébastien stood still for a moment, taking in the appearance of the soon-to-be King. An attractive young man, thought Lefebvre, shouldn't have any problems attracting suitors. The Corbournnian Premiér's thoughts soon turned to the matter at hand, however. He had never been a huge fan of funerals, as most people aren't. He did have more of a reason to hate them more than the average person. Having seen firsthand the death of his grandparents, his parents, and his two brothers, he was not eager to attend another funeral. He felt obliged too, though, as Willem I had attended the previous ruler of Corbournne's funeral, Marc Lefebvre's, Sébastien's father. Now, with a grimace on his face, Lefebvre followed Willem VI down the hall.

The soon-to-be-coronated King stood up infront of the pews where most of the leaders were expected to take a seat. There was a minister there to supervise the proceedings. Willem was standing on a section of the floor slightly above the rest, a couple steps difference. The minister was beside him and behind them both was the casket with Willem's crown over where his chest should be if the lid weren't covering his body.

"Now is the time," Willem paused, "To come up and say a few words about my dearly departed father."

His people loved him, he raised a fine son, and the world is in search of others like him. God save the King." With that, Nikodemous returned to his seat, to allow the proceedings to continue.

Norheim stood up, and approached the front. He wiped a tear from his cheek, and turned to the assembled.

"Today is not a day to grieve for someone who has passed, but to celebrate the life of such a man. To celebrate his many, and varied accomplishments. And to celebrate the positive impact that he has made on all his people. As a Yanitarian, I know what it is to lose a national hero, and a father figure, and as such, I sympathize with Willem. And as a national leader, I can understand the great burden that Willem now faces.

"But sadness will not solve much, this day. Instead of mourning the loss of a great leader, we should celebrate, and remember him fondly as we do so! And is it not so, that by celebrating while we remember him, that the feelings of happiness will be inseparably tied to his memory?

"It is a sad event, indeed, but would he want us to linger on the feelings of sorrow and grief? I don't think so."

"That was a beautiful speech, Mr. President," Willem VI stepped down and took his seat. The minister performed his duties and the crown was removed from the coffin to be put on the cushion in the coronation hall. A Dutch flag was then draped over the coffin and then the Orange Flag (horizontal tricolor, top-to-bottom, orange-white-blue). The case with the King's corpse was then transported by four men outside where it would be buried.

The Prince then almost silently disappeared into a back chamber to change. Most of his family was there and a servant led the foreigners and the new King's cousins and closer relatives to the coronation hall. It was a long hall with a splendid far wall and two thrones at the front. Between the thrones were two wooden carved stands with pillows each with a crown on them. The one meant for the Queen consort had a glass case over it.

As Zoya walked into the room; she could see Hedwig staring at the Queen Consort's throne; kept safely inside the glass case. She knew that Wilem was looking for a wife; and she imagined herself on the throne but she shed the thought after a few minutes. Hedwig looked at the members of Wilem's family; they all reminded her of her own family when she attended the coronation of Empress Anastasia II. Zoya, who had only been given the opportunity to attend the Empress' invitation because of her father's significant status in the government, was happy to be able to see the Dutch prince's coronation. Zoya whispered some words to Hedwig and then looked at Wilem; waiting for the coronation to begin.
