"...Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!"
Nothing beside remains: round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare,
The lone and level sands stretch far away.

-Percy Bysshe Shelly

The room was quiet at this time of day, the crowds that had gathered the night before dispersing like fog with the rays of the sun. A few souls remained, slumped over in chairs and booths, nursing drinks and hangovers. A solitary Rhun lay curled in a corner, the rest of the occupants dutifully avoiding the massive reptilian. A pair of women, shaven heads adorned with gaudy Chimera tattoos spiraling about their DNI implants, were engaged in a silent argument, hands gesturing emphatically as their unspoken debate went on.

Any conversation clinging to life in the dismal confines of the bar died swiftly as the door swung open, and the Avatars strode in. The pair of constructs gleamed under the meager lighting, their silver skins engraved with swirling runes, faces blank slabs of silver metal. The inhabitants of the room huddled closer to their drinks, the sole exception being the Chimera women, who, barring a friendly nod, simply ignored the Avatars, continuing their heated conflict in utter silence.

Scanning crowd… Really, Id, are you sure he’s here?

Positive. I have a few sources that put him walking in here last night, and nobody’s seen him leave yet. Now, you will find me this undesirable and take him into custody in your hold, or I will rend you to your component quits. Do you understand me, you filthy little nanosent?

Perfectly, Id. I will continue my search.

Good. Don’t disappoint me, Peacekeeper. It would be a shame to delete you. Id out.

The Avatars’ controlling AI, were it possible, would have sighed. It adored it’s role as guardian of this settlement’s Citizens, but sometimes it wished that it would be assigned to the Science Corps, where it wouldn’t have to deal with Id’s ceaseless pestering and threats. Perhaps it might put in a request after this matter was dealt with… Setting aside it’s idle thoughts, Peacekeeper directed the Avatars to move forward through the bar. All but one of the inhabitants had registered as clear on it’s sensors. The last one was obscured somehow, his cloak a blank singularity to the Avatar’s scans. As Peacekeeper extended it’s hand to grasp the stranger’s shoulder, it idly considered the possibility that his target wasn’t here at all. How nice that would be, to not have to deal with Id again…

Grasping the man’s shoulder, the Avatar began to spin him around.

“Excuse me sir, I’m going to have to ask you to-“

And then everything began to go wrong.
