Systemization (PMT Transition/Discussion Thread)

OOC: This is more of an exposition thread than any kind of RP, providing a look in to our cultural psychology as well as a kind of heads-up showing the gradual changes in our society finally taking concrete form and producing something that is, well, pretty much a natural extension of our overall cultural feel. Basically, Vetalia's gradually evolving in to PMT/FT and this is the start of it.

Feel free to read, discuss, comment, ask questions both ICly and OOCly. And yeah, this is becoming a pretty...unique...country.

Excerpt from History of Vetalia, Part IV: 1959-2100:

...the melodically artificial voice rings out over the colossal testing hall, echoing over the untold thousands of assembled people, all taking their respective version of the Vetalian Governmental Leadership Examination. From these thousands, 1,299 positions in the upper echelons of the Vetalian government would be chosen, and from them an ever smaller number would be selected, the best of the best truly earning their right to represent the state and guide it along the path towards their culture's dreams and hopes.

To the Vetalians, it was a beautiful innovation; the examination system achieved that oh-so-Vetalian desire for order and control. What could be measured could be controlled, and what could be controlled could be understood, and what could be understood could be used for profit. Freedom, democracy, they meant nothing unless they led to an increase in the ability of the Vetalian people to control their environment. It was an attitude that, depending on the culture, was viewed as either inspiring, frightening, or a combination thereof.

It was this unyielding lust for rational, logical control that made the Vetalians labor for untold hours over piles of statistical data, their life's work spelled out on the green-and-red tickers of the VSCE. It made others work in the country's endless network of laboratories and engineering facilities, pushing forward their pursuit of knowledge, mapping and controlling the very forces of life itself, constructing machines that grew slowly more intelligent by the day, and launching probes and satellites in to the skies to uncover the secrets of the universe. It manifested itself in their frightening determination to build, to discover, and to grow and their complete weakness and cowardice in the face of that which they could not control with their minds or their money.

The transition to pure meritocracy reflected the Vetalians' own desire to move on to what they perceived as the final frontier in their quest to control themselves: the construction of a statistical system that allowed all human variables to be measured, accurately correlated, controlled, and allocated for optimal efficiency. There was even a term for it, "bureaucratic systematization".

Vetalian culture was evolving, but what new form was arising was yet to be seen...

I'm going to bump this so that people aren't surprised by the future developments that will stem from this.

[OOC: From now on, all of my posts are OOC. If I come back for more questions, that is. I've always known that your people are very rich, but are they cultural as well? Pictures that you've shown always depict flamboyant and sophisticated lifestyles. Will they remain rich and cultural-looking, or only rich, if you get my point?]

OOC: Yes, mostly. However, architecture in particular will begin to change, becoming a lot more geometric and less organic than previous styles. It'll still be very lavish, but it will have a kind of orderly, opulent "strangeness" to it that will either captivate or unnerve foreigners with its beauty depending on how they view our culture.

I'm trying to find an image that really captures the feel. If I find it I'll post it.
