Advice to a Beleaguered Person (MT; Nation/Factbook help)

I appear to have some of the worst luck in the world with MT here. I have tried several times to get into MT, wanting some of the realism and fun that goes on in here. If nothing more than the challenge it takes to work within reasonably realistic standards. I made some half-hearted attempts in the beginning, then began working on it seriously. My last attempt with AMF was going along well...until recently when AMF has summarily vanished.

I do not begrudge it at all; he is probably a busy guy and something came up. I decided, however, to give him some time to come back. Seeing that whatever is going on is taking a lot of time, I decided to clean the slate and try again.

I would like to get into MT in any way, shape or form. I do not care if it requires someone coming in and crushing my nation into the ground, or if it is some kind of mentor kind of thing. I'd just like to at least have my nation worked out and have a basic understanding of MT so I can work effectively in this tech level.

I'd also like some help in making a factbook, which should expedite the process.

Thanks all, and I look forward to working with you all in MT when I manage to get there.

With your military, I would recommend upgrading to MT equipment. Start researching what is actually in use by some of the major powers and begin aquiring those items, stay away from the imaginary tech as it will only confuse you and those you rp with.. I based my military OrBat and equipment along the lines of the US/NATO, equipment and OrBat was familiar to me. Research what will fit into your MT scheme and budget and begin re-fitting you military along those lines.

Politically, I`m not quite sure what you need to do. Best bet is to adapt your government style towards MT.

Good Luck.

Politically ain't a problem; it's the military.

And use what other nations use? That sounds good, but I know there's all kinds of military vehicles, ships, aircraft, etc, I don't know them all. Any suggestions, or should I just get what I can and fill in later?

Hm... Well, perhaps the simplest way is to use an existing RL nation as a "template". Wikipedia would be a good place to start with this as you can probably get basic listing for organization and equipment from there; but bear in mind that Wikipedia is only a starting point. There are other more detailed websites out there, although I sadly don't have their URLs at this time.

Also, if you can reach a public library easily enough, they might have some books describing military equipment used by various nations.

Next, consider the terrain of your nation. Is it mostly plains, hills, mountains, wetlands, deserts, something else? Is your nation landlocked, bordering some body of water, a single island or group of islands? Answering these questions will help to determine if the equipment in your army, navy, and airforce will serve. IIRC, Eastern Europe has very hilly terrain; as a result, Warsaw Pact tanks might be more effective in such terrain. Open plains might be better served with NATO tanks (feel free to correct me on this, guys).

Third, consider your nation's policy and military doctrine. Are you isolationist, peaceful, peacekeeper, expansionist, other? Do you favour blitzkrieg warfare, or are you more partial to surgical strikes? This will likely require more changes to your equipment.

Now my own experience in this matter is very limited - as some of the more senior members can probably attest. But this should help with getting your military organization started.

One thing though, this is going to be labour intensive; how detailed your military is will depend on how much time you want to put into making it. I started work on my nation's military organization back in September 2007, and I'm still at it. But we have some good people here who can help you out, and answer specific questions for you.

I hope this helps.

I said my feelings on the draftroom in the draftroom thread.

Also, I have no idea how much money I can conceivably spend without looking like a newb, so I am unsure how to go about buying.

EDIT: Nvm, guess I was persuaded to go to draftroom after all.

Well, the nation I am using for a basic template is one similar to the USA (going with what I know and I can always "change later"), in political system. However, as for equipment the US has so much stuff, its mindboggling.

Well, as for terrain. I was thinking a nation of mostly plainish terrain, with a couple of immense forests, a mountain range or two, and some hills. I also have the left side of my nation that is a coastline, lots of cliffs with plenty of coves and the like. Policy? Um......I kinda usually have my nation be kinda one that is democratic and is an advocate for democracy but they don't get involved in stuff like the US has done recently. And military doctrine....I...really.....have no idea. I've never rped in MT before, so....

And I understand about that. I doubt I will be as strong and able as many others as they have detailed militaries that I can't hope to match. I can barely even understand some of the battles they have.

Remember... modularity and commonality are your friends. The fewer vehicle or equipment types you have to effectively fill your force requirements, the better.
