Losing Pretenses (Openish, P/MT)

British Londinium
17-01-2008, 05:10
Attention, attention all nationals: an Orange Alert is in effect. Risk of foreign terrorism remains a threat to the Commonwealth. All nationals are instructed to inform your local Security Service branch forthwith of any suspicious behavior. Failure to do so will be deemed complicity with foreign agents and is punishable by firing squad. The cold, metronome-like female voice speaking over the nation-wide address system had become a part of daily life. These sorts of announcements were commonplace, and they made more than sound waves. With every announcement, every government bulletin, fear spread.

"Can you believe it?" whispered a petite woman to her friend as they ate lunch in a crowded downtown restaurant. "I hear the Vantanians tried to detonate a nuke under the Supreme Court last week. Goes to show you: fucking foreign aneechiks. Can't trust 'em."

"Oh, gullible Ann. You're going to believe the bullshit they spew?," the woman's friend said with half a sandwich in her mouth. "If that was the case, don't you think the feds would have done something more than make a fucking alert bulletin?"

"Sssh!" the first woman whispered. "Keep your voice down! Someone will hear you."

"Er, excuse me? Called freedom of speech! I'll say what I want, when I want. Example: fuck the Consul! Down with the government! Blah blah Parliament can suck it!" the second woman more or less shouted. "See?"

"Whatever," the first mumbled.

"I don't get why you're so afraid," the second continued. "The Freeks still getting to you? Stark just uses that tripe to keep us in line."

The first looked up briefly and dropped her food in horror. "T..ttu..rn arou..nd," she said in shock.

"What no-" the second said as she saw the two Security Service agents enter the room, pistols drawn. The dining room was silent.

The agents grabbed the offending woman, and, with wicked grins, bashed her head into the wall repeatedly, leaving blood and brains splattered against the wall mural.

"Oh, oh my god!" screamed the surviving woman. "You killed her!"

The agents began to walk out of the restaurant, but one decided to stall for a brief moment. He pulled out his gun, shot her in the stomach, turned around, and left with his partner.

***

The streets of Nyquist were teeming, filled with angry protesters. The deaths of the two women in Fitzrovia at the hands of the SS was not something to be ignored, and despite the agency's best attempts to silence the story, news had spread. Demands for new elections had sprung up; the Coalition Government had been denounced; millions had decided to flock to Parliament Spire to demonstrate against the gross injustices perpetrated by the government in the name of national security.

Opposing the hordes were four regiments of the Royal Overwatch Consular Guard, their white and orange armor gleaming in the sun. Without even reaching for their assault rifles, the Overwatch managed to keep even the unruliest protesters a good distance from the Spire.

Outside Parliament was not the only place where controversy was taking place. Inside its chambers, hundreds of Senators and Assemblymen were tempestuously screaming about the proper choice of action. An MP from Northampton called for the execution of the agents, and an MP from Eryx called for new elections, to appease the protesters below.

Consul Andrew Stark, standing on the tower's observation deck, had different plans. He would watch them unfold dispassionately.

***

"We're a go," radioed the strategic commander of the regiments on scene. "Orders confirmed."

The men cocked their weapons, and leveled them, aiming for the crowd's chest level.

"Fire on my mark!"

"1! 2! 3! Mark!"

With staggering accuracy, a lead storm was unleashed, untamable and irrevocable. Tens of thousands of bullets flew through the crowds, ripping through flesh and fabric and bone. Without pause, another volley was unleashed upon the fleeing millions. The hordes ran down any street they could find, packed together, united under the common banner of survival.

"Targets fleeing. Flamethrowers, you have a green."

The escape routes were cut off in an instant, with battalions of flamethrower-wielding soldiers incinerating the unlucky men and women who weren't being transformed into Swiss cheese by the riflemen.

This a public announcement from the Consul of the Commonwealth, Sir Andrew Stark, boomed the speakers in the same monotony as every television in the country silently clicked on. From the huge screens in the city streets to private radios, Stark's message would be heard.

"It has come to my attention that certain nationals have decided that the policies of Her Majesty's Government are intolerable. As demonstrated by the entirely unsuccessful protest outside of Parliament nought but a few minutes ago, your opinion of government policy is now officially irrelevant. Per Consular Order 98214, issued an hour ago, I am hereby instituting martial law. Emergency powers are being transferred to the Crown and Cabinet. Dissent will be viewed as treason, and you may ask the five million dead protestors how we deal with dissent. Ex corona, æquitas."

OOC: All I ask for is some intelligent RP. No "LOL GANGBANG!" crap, please.

His Majesty King Steven I is disgusted by this recent show of barbarity from the Londinian Commonwealth. What harm, I ask, is perpetrated by citizens voicing their opinions?

When we opened relations with the reborn Londinian government, we thought that it had learned it's lesson. From the oppressive Swanner regime to that of Consul Flavia Davidson, a faint trend was observed; it seemed to the our government that Londinium was finding it's humanity, slowly but surely.

In light of recent events, however, we have seen the foolishness of our thinking. The Londinians seem incapable of learning their lesson. A Sovereign League invasion, two glassings, and two run-ins with the Freeks have failed to make an impact. Why then should any improvement be expected in the Londinian mentality? It is a shame that your nation cannot learn to be compassionate Mr. Stark. What is more shameful is that a nation so enlightened and cultured as yours allows such barbarian heathens as yourself to attain positions of authority.

Effective immediately, consider all diplomatic relations suspended indefinitely. Also effective immediately, a total trade embargo has been placed on the Londinian Commonwealth until such time as it adopts a domestic policy in tune with basic human freedoms.

May your Nation Burn in Hell, Again,
HM Steven I

Subject: Recent Events

The Tribal Chiefdom is not impressed nor surprised at the Londinian Commonwealths actions for some reason every Londinian Leader that has taken power seems to of gone mad it a chain of events that suggests the Londinians are not fit to hold power or rule themselves an ideology the Freeks put to the test did they not?

I am at a loss as to why an acomplished memeber of Londinian Politics would do what many would define as "Throw it all Away" from what my intelligence suggests Mr Starks domestic Political position was hardly untenable yet he still felt the need to massacre 5 Million people in order to prove a point. Mr Stark you are nothing more than a Coward, nothing more than a common thug and bully you prance about like a cocky little poodle and alas you like the rest of your predessors before you shall learn their are bigger dogs than you in this garden and alot of them would take pleasure in forcing you to flee to yet another homeland. So Mr Stark I ask you this "Is it really worth it?"

The Tribal Chiefdom could rant and rave about the current and past actions of the Londinian Commonwealth but its pointless and well id get much more done as leader of my nation if I launched a Tactical Nuclear Missile on my own Capital. The Tribal Chiefdom however makes it clear that whilst we will remain neutral in any situation resulting from Londinian Domestic Action we will not tolerate Hostilities towards our Diplomatic Staff, Embassy or General Citizenary within the Londinian Commonwealth the Tribal Chiefdom will advise its Citizenary to avoid and or leave the Londinian Commonwealth but such hostile action will be responded to.

CEO Samuel Ravensclaw Houston looked up from his morning intellengece report and raised an eyebrow in Tai's direction. "Is this correct?" His question was more of a comment.

If Tai, formally known as CSO Tai'shenn Kahane, had it in her briefing then it had indeed actually happened, with quite possibly the formidible lady herself having been present to witness it. However, as it had occured in the nation of that most of Nuevo Nihongo considered "the planet's most wretched hive of scum and villany" Sam wasn't absolutely certain she had deigned to set foot there.

CIA Lady Victoria Dominique McMasters, sipped her coffee, made blonde with heavy cream and sweet with sugar, and nodded. Her eyes were sad,but her tone furiously indignant. " My people can affirm it. Bloody madman, killed five million of his own people. We, at our absolute worst, have never done anything like that."

"It has to be something in the water, or maybe there's something radioactive in their throne and all near it loose their minds!" Sam snorted, though he wasn't amused. "We may not be a nation known for being nice, and we can be hellla rough on people, but even we aren't that repressive. There'd be a lynch mob in here before you could say 'revolution', and they'd not take much in the way of explainations or excuses"

Both women silently agreed with him, they knew their fellow 'Goans very well. Nihongo society was an armed one with a short fuse, and since every one had spent time in the military they well knew how to use those weapons and fight a war.

Tai spoke up, for the first time, in her whisky and honey whisper "Should we be prepared to offer entry those seeking political assylum?"

Sam tilted his head as he considered her question. "Carefully I'd think, with rigorous checks before they're allowed to roam free."

Vic frowned but said nothing at the moment and Tai wouldn't have asked the question if she hadn't approved of it.

That matter settled, their morning talk turned to other matters...

We are surprised that, fresh out of isolation, the Londinians so quickly chose a path that will inevitably lead to their destruction.

The Autocratic Federated Empire hereby condemns the Londinian Commonwealth for continued tyrannical, barbaric behavior.

A full embargo has been placed on trade and travel, and official recognition of the Londinian state has been rescinded. Any Londinian vessels passing within 350 nautical miles of Akimonadi territories will be detained without question.

All diplomatic communication has been cut off indefinitely. We shall not resume diplomatic conference until, at the very least, martial law is rescinded.

We warn the Londinian authority to do this immediately before further steps are taken.

Open Declaration:

His Majesty's Government strongly condemns the continuing action of the so called government of British Londinium. Even after several attempts of international intervention via the Sovereign League and then intervention by the NATO power bloc and Gholgoth. The people of British Londinium are unable to rule themselves. On order of His Majesty's Foreign and Commonwealth Office the Imperial Crown advises a blanket travel ban to all Clandonian and joint nationals due to the unrestrained acts of violence carried out by the state authorities of British Londinium.

Along with trade and diplomatic sanctions consultations with our Royal Georgian League and Questerian Commonwealth allies will be conducted to discuss future and joint actions in dealing with the current rogue administration in British Londinium.

Antigr is, in a word, appalled. We - or at least my staff and I - have watched with interest at the several times your country has been attacked with nuclear weapons, invaded, and you invaded others and defeated. You should have learned that your actions are none but stupid and that the consequences were always the worse for you.

This is another stupid, senseless act which will possibly and probably be again, worse for you. We most certainly hope it does. Freedom of Speech indeed - did a flying pig knock at the door during your declaration of this?

This time, it seems, you have again gone totally mad - on an equally mad scale. Millions massacred in cold blood. Murdered. Men, women, children, the elderly.

There will be consequences, not just from us. For the moment, we'll just cut off our trade with you and the last of the Antigrans in your country are, as I type, being quietly ushered away back to Antigr. We will not have our citizens living in your country. We will not trade with you, and we urge all others to do the same.
Maybe we'll arrest any of your citizens in our country supportive of your cruel, stupid, evil tinpot regime, and lock them up forever. Or 'dissapear' them, because frankly, your actions of this stupidity on such a scale which has happened over and over that any representative of your country's current regime on our soil is evil, as you are, and thus any political pepresentation of yours such as an embassy is currently being closed down by armed Antigran special police units. You continue your actions and we'll keep these people 'safely in our care'. Or at least keep them.

"Extra! Extra! Massacre in Londinium!.... Extra! Extra!..."

All the major newspapers throughout the Kingdom carriered the story on the front page, a few photos that had leaked out of the actual carnage being printed inside. They held grisly images of burning cars and people, and a few people were unable to control themselves and had to seek places to find to hurl. Commentators on a few news stations blasted the Londinium government for this blatant attack on human rights and free speech, and though a couple tried to play devil's advocate and offer an opposing viewpoint, they were shouted down in a sea of condemnation.

On the streets in two major cities a protest had been organized rather quickly, which surprised a few police captains, though the protestors for the most part controlled themselves to just chanting slogans and marching. The few that tried to start something more were pushed out by the protestors themselves and then arrested by the police, who for the most part stayed out of the way and just observed.

In Parliment, it was a shouting match as well. Reasoned voices competed with histerical and extreme views in an effort to come up with an official Orzi response. After several hours of this, including a walkout by a few minor parties, a declaration was voted on and adopted. It declared a trade embargo upon Londinium, as well as a travel ban. The diplomatic mission that had been planned to open in Londinium was put on hold, and the invitation for the Londinium naval fleet on its tour to visit Orzio was withdrawn. In the end, it was a typical government condemnation.

Deep within Eiflegard's massive city-state there was a meeting of the High Justices, the Judgemasters who oversaw the direction of the nation. Almost in a perch, Chief Judgemaster Sivard Valorn sipped his scotch whiskey, musing over foreign activities. The High Justice of Expansion, Judgemaster Alena Elore, readied to speak to the others as her nutrition was fed to her in a series of various strategically placed tubes. Finally, with much deliberation she announced to the others, "I have contracted out an advertising campaign to the people of Londinium. Under Eiflegard law, this event would not have happened. Again the firm that has won the bid is SymTec Marketing, the same firm that was responsible for the viral marketing of the various libertarian movements around the world. With more direct marketing toward emphasizing the liberty Eiflegard provides, I am sure Londinion's tragedy will be our gain. More of the world will be liberated".

The other high justices nodded slowly in agreement. Chief Judgemaster Sivard put down his scotch and stated, "Very good Alena. Eiflegard will print off the money you require, upon my department green-lighting the cost-benefit analysis of your department's proposed budget."

Following this course of action, the course of action was approved and the agents of SymTec Marketing prepared to set course to Londinium to secretly arrange to have many unhappy citizens relocated to Eiflegard. Those citizens who would comply would be provided with a loan giving them the opportunity to gain a basic education and a means of income. Eiflegard's government, comprised entirely of the various Judges and their staff, made no official comment on Londinium's actions.

From the Office of the President of the Greater Economic Union of New Manth

Praetor Nosov,

I am very mindful of the many benefits, both in the area of national security and economic development, that friendship and open borders have brought to both our nations. The actions of British Londinium, however, pose a problem that I have found intractable. The nation, and Vetalia's support for it, has in the past worried Manth, but the governments of my predecessors were content to put off the question, perhaps in hope that the problem of British Londinium would solve itself without overly affecting us. However, recent events have convinced me that this is unlikely or impossible. The majority of my government wishes no longer to be associated with British Londinium, even indirectly. Moreover the Vetalian-Manthian border, our most open, could poses a serious security threat given the chronic instability of the Londinian nation and that nation's close ties with Vetalia.

To stop beating around the bush, then, I must regretfully inform you that Manth intends to restore normal border restrictions until such time as the Londinian question is answered in a manner which can reassure our concerns, or else until a future administration otherwise sees fit to reseal our old agreements. I must also notify you that the Union will be suspending observance of its treaties of military cooperation and defense with Vetalia until further notice. Vetalian citizens currently possessing a visa for travel or residence within the Greater Economic Union will have to have their documents revalidated under the procedures used for citizens traveling from neutral foreign nations, and we request that military personnel and equipment be evacuated in a timely manner.

I have high hopes that this state of affairs will not remain indefinitely, but until then I must remain regretfully yours,

While we are concerned that your nation would sever these ties in such a sudden manner, we understand your reasoning. Although neither I, nor my government, nor the people of Vetalia are willing to withdraw our support for the Londinians. especially when so many of our citizens have close cultural and geneological ties to British Londinium, we do not see your actions as tarnishing relations between our states and will not take it in to account should the situation change.

We will immediately begin withdrawal of any military units in your country and will ensure that our citizens are prepared for any adjustments that must be made in order to comply with your regulations. However, we still remain committed to a defensive alliance with your country and will continue to maintain forces for our joint defense. We will not forget your country's contribution to our mutual prosperity and I hope that the same is true for the people of New Manth.

I am disappointed that it has come to this, but for the duration of this crisis I wholly understand your decision and wish you the best.

Personally, I have had enough. It was the Londinians who annoyed the Freeks enough for them to order the disbandment of CAP.

The Londinians were also the root of your country's devastating war with Crimmond.

It would seem that, after ten years of isolationism, the Londinians might emerge a better, more compassionate people.

But, alas, they have not. Their first major act fresh out of isolationism was to murder civilians. I could expect nothing less.

Thus, I have come to the conclusion that the Londinians must be dealt with in harshest terms. If they cannot act like adults then they clearly need adults to lead them. Once more the Londinians have found themselves on the fringe of a massive invasion, or, as the grunts say, a 'clusterfuck'. I do not want to be caught up in it again.

I wish that you would see, for your own sake and your country's safety, the futility and mortal danger of supporting British Londinium.

Official Communiqué - Federation of Caelapes - Ministry of Foreign Affairs

To the Londinian Crown and Consul:

It is most upsetting that a former trusted ally of the Federation is reduced to a police- and terror-state by the imposters standing in the office of the Consul. The Foreign Affairs Office hereby refuses to recognize the validity of the Londinian government and orders any Londinian diplomat to either return to their home country or appeal for Caelapene citizenship. Caelapene diplomats, no longer serving a mission to a recognized nation, will return to Caelapes as soon as possible. Diplomacy will not resume between British Londinium and Caelapes until martial law is repealed, political and civil rights are reinstated, and the current governmental leaders are removed from office.

Londinian citizens who desire freedom can find refuge in the Federation. The Ministry of Social Development is prepared to construct temporary habitat zones for Londinian immigrants in the event that there is a large influx of refugees. Food, water, shelter, and clothing will be provided for a period up to two months by the Caelapene government.

Londinian vessels of any type, whether they are civilian merchant ships or airliners or military vessels, are ordered to leave Caelapene territory at once. A brief period will be given for all vessels to evacuate Caelapene waters or airspace. Following this respite, any Londinian vessels not registered with the Foreign Affairs Office as a vessel carrying refugees will be destroyed as a vessel engaging in hostile actions against the Federation of Caelapes.

We regret that such extreme measures must be taken with a nation once considered our ally, but until the tyrannical government is removed from power, there will be no other dealings between the Federation of Caelapes and the state of British Londinium.

Official Imperial Communiqué

The Sovereign Empire of Alacea

To: Londinian Foreign Ministry
From: Office of the Lord Consul

heil!Sigh. Was it not only a handful of years ago that the bonhomie of the Alacean people allowed corporations to hand out hundreds of billions- nay, just under a trillion dollars so you could rebuild after you were ruthlessly glassed by the Freeks? Perhaps the Freeks were indeed correct in their reasoning. You've had chance after chance to learn your lesson- to reform your nation into a respectable one, like the one I and my allied heads of state command. You have lost our sympathy, Mr. Stark. Killing five million by burning them to death is totally unacceptable. The Vetalians can't protect you forever.

heil! You've had fair and ample warning regarding your future if you don't stop killing the masses. What went wrong in Londinian ancestry that you have such a thirst for innocent blood? That of your own fellow nationals, even? The world grows tired of your actions. While we will not partake in any genocide, we fear every man, women, and child living in your commonwealth is in great danger.

Please learn to act civilly, or the world will teach you how.

Lord Consul Gordon Barkove
The Sovereign Empire of Alacea

Office of the Praetor of Vetalia

If you recall, our country struck first in the conflict with Crimmond based upon the irrational use of weapons of mass destruction of our late, self-appointed Emperor. We were not attacked, and our war was not the result of supporting the Londinians, it was the result of foolish aggression using methods completely inappropriate in the context of modern war. The late Valerian Kosyachenko was a murderer and criminal, and we paid for his crimes through the loss of the northernmost provinces of Vetalia. My predecessor and myself have both distanced ourselves from that situation and stress our commitment solely to the defense of British Londinium in the event that it is attacked.

We seek no quarrel with other countries, have not placed any restrictions on those opposed to the actions of British Londinium, and have not made any attempts to mobilize our armed forces for potential conflict. Although we find the Londinians' methods to be problematic, the sheer strength of our historical and cultural bonds as well as the sheer economic opportunity that has been generated by cooperation between our states makes it impossible for us to take any other position than supporting our closest ally.

I do not wish to fight a war, my people do not wish a war, the 79 million Londinian-Vetalians* do not wish a war, and we will all gladly aid in any attempts to resolve this situation in an amicable manner. The only way there will be war is if someone else strikes first, and we will stop any attempt by any nation, including British Londinium, to engage in a war of aggression against another state.

Signed,
Praetor Maxim Nosov

*OOC: Londinian-Vetalians are Vetalian citizens born/raised in British Londinium, nationalized refugees from British Londinium, as well as the descendants of intermarriages between our cultures. All of these people would predate the second AMF-BL war and so would likely have seen the war firsthand.

“How many dead?”
“Estimated at 5 million, sir, according to Eurasian propaganda. We had not allocated SATNT or HUMINT to the protests; I am ashamed to say that we do not have an embassy in Eurasia’s current location, and our assets in country total five. Actual casualties are probably significantly less.”
“Shit. If what they say is close to true… that’s half of a city… easily…”

Captain Davidson of the 327th military intelligence battalion; XXXIII Corps, stood at attention at the foot of the desk of Adam Wincenty, who, despite ordering the deaths of many millions more than that in his career, had lost some of his already wan color.

“Bastards… we can thank UFAN for this somehow, I’m sure.”

“Sir, we have no evidence that any other…”

“Captain,” interrupted the Arch Arsonist “UFAN is the reason that this stain of a nation has lasted as long as it has. How many Ennuisians were in that crowd?”

“The State Department has put out a release ordering all nationals in Eurasia to check in. We have not heard from 623 as of yet. A travel advisory has been put in place as well.”

“Thank you Captain. Dismissed.”

Within seconds of the Captain’s boots clicking out the door, Adam was on a direct connection with half its cabinet.

“Director Swietoslaw, you are authorized to deploy up to an additional twenty agents to Eurasia to discover dissident groups and to covertly supply them with arms. Discretion and deniability is paramount. This cannot be traced to us. Option B is authorized. Protocol 23 is authorized.

Admiral Andrei, authorize the activation of all transportation defense systems, including, but not limited to, the 155’s.

There is to be no official statement at this time, and there is to be no official course of action against this… country. Dismissed.”

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Kathrine Lyria, SSA Asset, walked through the street.

“Attention, attention all nationals: an Orange Alert…” blared the incessant loudspeaker three blocks over. Kathrine ignored the warnings.

“This government outlawed ‘terrorism’ because it doesn’t like competition,” she thought to herself, her medium-length dirty blonde hair bounced in its tight ponytail with each step. She was a woman on a mission.

Kathrine was also a sociopath, who got a unique joy out of killing. Testimate to this fact was the dead officer of the law behind the dumpster in some dank alley three quarters of a mile back. She had ambushed him, and had broken off a three inch pocket knife in his spine. The human body has a hard time resisting when the spine is severed at the neck. She didn’t need to, but a broken piece of glass had presented itself with the unique opportunity to open a second mouth in his neck. She did it for the hell of it, just as what was about to follow.

Twenty minutes later, she was on the third story from the top of a low-rise building, only twenty stories tall. Still, this building afforded her a unique view of a military checkpoint at what appeared to be the Eurasian version of a police precinct.

The supply lines into the country had been good, and her latest toy had been delivered. She dialed the required number on her cell phone, pressed 8 for “Praetonian,” and 4 for “operations.” The otherwise silent room echoed with a light click, and a compartment in the floor opened, and she pulled her suitcase out, and set the rifle up.

Kathrine had grown to love big caliber rifles, where the Steyr Augs of the Ennuisian military in the old days lacked the punch to send the average Kraven trooper to the gates of hell fast enough. The .50 cal that marked the upper range of conventional Ennuisian arms worked well, but this particular Mechem NTW rifle was larger… much larger.

She loaded a magazine of AP-HE ammo, and sighted her target. The dumb bastard, resplendent in his armor at the checkpoint, was chatting with his buddy. From 2,260 yards, as the laser range finder indicated, there wouldn’t be much of a body left to recover.

“Say a prayer little one, and may God have mercy on your soul, because I won’t.” she whispered, lining up on what she believed was the bridge of his eyes. Wind and gravity accounted for, this would be pretty.

She took a breath, and fired. The recoil was immense, but the weight of the rifle held it down as a 20mm Vulcan round soared down range, emitting a loud boom. She fired four more times. The protection afforded to the soldiers might hold up against 7.62, but 20mm made a joke out LAVS. She reloaded and dropped another five rounds down range, each one exploding as they ripped through nigh everything. Another clip, this one pure armor piercing, and aimed blindly at the building behind them. Concrete splintered with each shot.

Having fired her fifteen, she quickly disassembled and packed the rifle before throwing it into the now sealed titanium box in the floor. Quickly tossing her cell phone out the window which she shut, and picked up the steel box containing the expended rounds and magazines.

Her neighbors, bless them, forgot to lock their door most of the time, became the depository of the expended clips. She spotted some folded newspapers, which light up easily. She took an express elevator down. Smoke would soon flood the apartment, then the floor, and soon the building; long after she walked out the building.

‘Arrogant fools,’ hissed the Emperor as he flicked through the Imperial intelligence reports on all the diplomatic condemnations and threats flying across the glove to what remained of British Londinium. He didn’t bother reading anymore than the first few, they were mostly the same predictable messages anyway, and instead pushed the report off the side of the large council table he sat at. Next to him, Lord Caracas, an Imperial General, did not even give the papers a second glance, clearly not interested in the contents.

‘At least the Vetalians seem to have some common sense. Make a note of that General, they may be worth some kind of diplomatic relations with after all.’

‘Perhaps. But their response has not been sufficient for the situation at hand.’

‘Not at all General. But we shall see to that,’ the Emperor smiled, ‘Now, go and begin preparations for a taskforce to go to British Londinium. And get Commander Dagon on station ASAP.’

‘Of course my Lord,’ Caracas answered, then stood and with a brisk nod departed to carry out his orders.

From: The High Council of Arrandin

Be shocked and appalled all you like but do not for a minute think that the Infinite Empire will allow you to begin dictating internal policies to other nations, especially to those with which we neighbor or threaten invasion because of such disagreements in policy.

I issue you now your only warning. If you send military or ‘peacekeeping’ forces near British Londinium, or even into our regional waters, they will be destroyed without hesitation or compassion.

This full well applies to any forces of the Republic of Kahanistan too. Our previously good relations will not spare you should you cross the Empire. We strongly recommend that you reconsider your request to your Praetonian overlords.

"Has Liz seen you yet?"

Kevin Dale's head, topped with a mess of largely uncombed reddish-blonde hair, was the only visible part of the man interrupting Sir Reginald Laird's reading.

"No," Laird replied coolly, not bothering to look up at his private secretary.

"Then he is going to."

"About what?"

"Londinian fools."

"Again?"

"Again."

Laird sighed and put his security briefing back on his desk before leaning back in his chair. "What is it this time?"

"Word on the street is that they shot up a whole bunch of protesters."

Laird shook his head. "When do you think they will learn?"

"Well, after years of inbreeding from all the international isolation… and the effect of radiation from several different nuclear strikes… well, it all adds up to a nation of the mentally challenged."

For a brief moment Laird smiled, but restrained himself from chuckling. "Alright, keep an eye on it and I shall talk to the Prime Minister this afternoon and by evening we will have trade embargoes and alike on the Londinians." He picked up his briefing and started to read, before looking up once more at Dale, "not that it shall impact them at all."

"We live in an age of symbolism, Reg."

Official Statement
Office of the Prime Minister
United Kingdom of Oceania

Once more, the sovereign government of the Londinian Commonwealth has shown its true colour: red. The red of the blood of the innocent protesters exercising one of the most basic human rights, that of assembly and peaceful protest. The actions of the Londinian Commonwealth and the subsequent declaration of martial law besmirch not just Londinian democracy, but democracy itself.

Consequently, His Majesty's Government calls upon the Commonwealth to rescind the consular order that instituted martial law and restore the principles of liberal democratic governance to the people of the Commonwealth.

Until such measures are taken by the Commonwealth government, His Majesty's Government has authorised an embargo of all Londinian goods and services. All financial assets of the government or members of the government in the jurisdiction of the United Kingdom will be seized and held until His Majesty's Government is satisfied that the conditions established herein have been met.

Additionally, travel to the Commonwealth by Oceanian citizens will be restricted except for cases of emergency. Commonwealth citizens, however, will be permitted to enter the United Kingdom, per customary security checks, as refugees or seekers of asylum. Travel by Commonwealth government officials, however, to the United Kingdom or her colonies is banned.

The United Kingdom, His Majesty's Government, and the Oceanian people stand in solidarity with those ruthlessly and needlessly persecuted by the government of the Londinian Commonwealth.

OOC: Should bump this. Also, I forgot to provide the world with our no-questions-asked ways to circumvent sanctions.

Ministry of Trade

By the power vested in the Ministry by the Maritime Trade Act of 2019, we are hereby authorized to make the following offer to all interested parties regarding trade with British Londinium:

-All cargoes and their vessels can be registered as Vetalian for the appropriate cost schedule with the Ministry of Trade. This will allow individual companies to circumvent unilateral sanctions.

-In the event that penalties are in place to punish any ship that trades with British Londinium, several Vetalian shipping companies have additional capacity that can be used to reroute your trade at spot prices for shipping goods. This applies to all forms of transportation.

-As always, incorporation in the Republic of Vetalia or its dependencies provides complete legal immunity from foreign restrictions on trade. Due to the sheer impact of Vetalian commerce on world markets, it is highly unlikely, that there will be any negative ramifications of this move. Access to a wide variety of markets as well as membership in the Chamber of Commerce should more than compensate for losses.

We hope this ensures that none of our partners in commerce suffer the effects of a blockade, and look forward to the continued prosperity that has stemmed from international trade between our countries. Further issues can be discussed on an international basis or through the greater region of Mediterranica.

Yuri Pankratov, Proconsul of Trade

"Not that. I know we're tiny. I meant as an observation force."
"2nd Exped's in the vicinity, they just got resupplied. Apparently they have been blockaded. We can observe what's happening, making sure they don't harm people."
"That's always good. Send them in behind the blockade, but make sure we're in gun range of them. Fly the peace standard."
"Jawohl. They should be there in three days. I took the liberty to send them before I asked you."
"It's dangerous to prethink your superiors."
"You may be superior, but you're my brother."

Official Londinian Communiqué

Open Declaration:

Neither the Crown nor Parliament of the Commonwealth will back down to the baseless demands levied by the rest of the international community. What is done within our borders, to insure domestic tranquility, stability, and order, shall exclusively remain under the purview of Her Majesty's Government. Order is the objective of this government, and any and all actions necessary shall be pursued.

Let me remind those who intend on threatening the Commonwealth with their militaries of the resolve of the Londinian people to prevent yet another power, bent on exterminating the Londinian people once and for all, on perpetrating another Vivicide. We shall fight to the bitter end, down to the very last man, woman, or child. Those who attempt to undermine the legitimate government of the Commonwealth shall be expunged unerringly and without hesitation.

With that in mind, the Commonwealth has, of its own accord, lifted certain provisos of the Emergency Act, namely the reimposition of standard civil liberties as detailed in the Commonwealth Constitution Act of 2014, the Reaffirmation of Moral and Ethical Government Conduct Act of 2019, and the 2023 Charter of Londinian Rights, sans restrictions on public surveillance and search and seizure. In regards to the SS agents who executed the two women in the café, further investigation has revealed that these men were motivated by personal reasons, and were not compelled to commit murder by Her Majesty's Government, which remains dedicated to the rule of law and respect for the felicific calculus, which continues to guide the Crown and Parliament in decision-making. This, however, does not exonerate the protesters summarily executed two days ago for subversion and sedition, nor will the Commonwealth apologize for these actions. Order must be maintained.

At this time, all Akimonadi vessels are hereby granted Letters of Marque and Reprisal against all Londinian vessels. Akimonadi vessels have the lawful right to sink, damage, capture, destroy or otherwise impede Londinian shipping in any way possible. By Order of the Crown and Parliament

Her Majesty's Government views the recent issuance of letters of marque and reprisal by the Akimonadi government, and the subsequently declared military blockade, as nothing short of an attempt at genocide and a blatant declaration of war against the Commonwealth. All forces of Her Majesty's Royal Overwatch are hereby instructed to take whatever measures necessary to expunge the Akimonadi threat and amputate sectors of the population which threaten the success of efforts to repel aggressors.

Cacophonic military sirens roared all over the continent, and the powerful mechanisms driving the defenses the Commonwealth had spend the past fifteen years building finally went into motion. Overwatch personnel rushed from their barracks to the strings of coastal fortifications stationed above the cliffs and fjords that comprised the Londinian littoral. The normally tranquil air and sea quickly became teeming masses of aircraft and naval vessels.

***

Ongoing sector sweep in accordance with Red Alert status. Terrorist activity confirmed. Continue surface sector sweep. Remote compliance. Expunge forthwith. Seek passive signature imprint. Mandate sublevel restrictions. This message was blared from every loudspeaker in Nyquist, as the white-uniformed soldiers of the Ground Overwatch Elites methodically began their search of the areas in which a terrorist, presumed to be a foreign agent, had liquidated several Overwatch personnel.

Arson detected in vicinity. Artificial in nature. Investigate, subsume perpetrators and inoculate.

The Overwatch found out about the fire a tad too late to catch the Ennuisian agent on scene, but, fortunately for them, the city-wide sentry system had captured her on video. Her face was obscured, impossible to make a match, but she was being tracked; powerful computing software coordinated the video images from each camera to create a coherent, unified picture of Nyquist and its surrounding area. With this, the Overwatch began its pursuit.

It always came to war in the end. Some nations instigated it for their own greed, some because they claimed it was ‘the right thing to do’ while others probably didn’t have even the semblance of a reason for it. The Empire knew this well and so was ever prepared to act quickly and ruthlessly in situations like these; after all, a last resort used first is often extremely effective.

And ruthless they would be. The Imperial Government considered foreigners a blight upon the world on the average day so it should not have be surprising that when another nation began interfering within the Empires sphere of operations, the response would be severe, callous even.

Within minutes of the Emperor’s warning transmission, a flurry of activity had occurred across the Western ports of the Empire as ships were readied, crews embarked and supplies were ferried from warehouses and munition depots. In less than an hour the two standby battlegroups from the base at Telún were on the move towards British Londinium with orders to secure the waters there and obliterate any shipping that failed to comply with Imperial forces.

From the North, Supreme Commander Dagon and his own battlegroup departed not long after and would join up with the other fleet midway, a rendezvous that was now only a few minutes away.

Any attempts at the interdiction of Vetalian commerce vessels or foreign vessels operating under the aegis of trade rerouting will be considered an act of war against the Republic of Vetalia and will be dealt with in a manner seen fit by this government. We will not retaliate with force unless attacked first, and will not impose any punitive sanctions for as long as Vetalian trade is not interdicted.

Neither economic nor conventional warfare is in anyone's interest and we ask that all nations seeking to impose it consider the cost that it will inflict on their national well being. Our country is not willing to see any more deaths or economic losses because of disputes over the proper methods of governing.

Obis Pax Paxis

His Imperial Majesty’s has, after due consideration, asked his foreign ministry to prepare a declaration of support of the Londinian Commonwealth, her dominions, and allies wherever they may be. This is not a matter we take lightly and is only invoked upon seeing the world up in arms over an internal affair of which they should have no purview or issue. This is completely an internal matter, and acting upon such we believe a direct threat to Londinian sovereignty, and therefore constitutes an assault on the dignity of nations, and right of the crown.

Though the matter is, as reported, perhaps warranting investigation relating to the humane treatment of commonwealth citizens, it is most certainly however not a issue for the maverick governments of a hand full of self anointed vigilante nations, inflated on their own pomposity. As such His Imperial Majesty’s government has sworn to uphold the sovereignty, and government of the Londinian commonwealth whatever the threat or adversary.

Under order of the Admiralty the Imperial Navy shall be put to sea, and any acting in blockade, or violent action against any Londinian province, colony, holding or asset, shall be dealt with most severely. The Admiralty has also given the order for torpedo rams to be deployed with two surface action groups, the Third and Fourth, of the Imperial Navy, and it would truly be a shame if any nation suffered casualties from the actions of said fleet groups. All ships acting against Waldenburger transports or merchant vessels who dare dictate events or dare impede them upon their preappointed routes shall be treated as pirates, and shall be dealt with as such.

This is not a matter we take lightly and we encourage all parties to step down before the situation continues in this downward trend. His Imminence the Cenobirach also issues condemnation of embargoing nations and if necessary will call upon the universal flock of the Holy Church, a number quite substantial in comparison with even the regional population of the Mediterranica, to stand in the path of such unholy injustices against the Divine Right of Kings, and their duly appointed regents.

No quarter shall be given to those found in violation of the intent of this letter.

His Most Gracious Imperial Majesty Wyatt von Waldenburg IV

“Oh not again,” came the exasperated cry, “how many times must we go through this,” spoken were the words, “Itzerican, attend me” Izalien called out off headedly as she swept out of the high borne portal that was one of the entries to the Council chambers, her Ministerial Tunic flowing behind her majestically as she strode forth, her hair trailing behind like a banner of golden hue her expression one of resigned fate.

“Minister Izalien, I am without reason for this, I must admit, the British Londinians were thought to be annihilated,” Returned the Itzerican, as he half kept pace with his superior, his arms clasped within his finely wrought cuffs, his quick eyes apprising Iazlien’s mood and weighing up the upcoming situation, the meeting of the council of ministers had raked over hotter fires than usual, it was the nature of the world it seemed.

“It doesn’t matter Itzerican,” Izalien replied tersely cutting him off mid sentence, “I empower you to wage the final war against them, and I release to you the Tokontu to frontline use, in additition to Kirelzigan 6 Prototype Weapons Dossier for active service, gather your forces and strike now, and strike without mercy, herald now their destruction and bear now the end, now go, and build further upon successes elsewhere.” Izalien strode past the Itzerican as he stared, askance at the Data Crystal he clutched within his left hand, resigning himself once more to duties embrace he drew himself up and planed left hand to heart in salute to the rapidly retreating figure of the Novan war minister.

He smiled wolfishly bringing his hands to rest together, sliding a switch on the metallic layer of his cuffs as he headed off to the Monorail terminal within the tower, “Vistakal Orenias, get the Partovanian ready for departure, inform the Thirteenth, Seventh, Second, Ninth and Fifth Fleets to prepare for departure by days end, and inform all logistical personell to prepare for imminent delivery of new designs, I’ll be forwarding the aprrporiate protocols, ensure they are disseminated, I shall be joining you soon, oh and Partska, Switch to Shadowfeed transmissions, and encode up a new encryption routine.” After satisfied with the acknowledgement the transmission was ended, as he strode into the Elevator that would descend to the great beneath.

IXION, lock elevator controls and establish a connection to Sergei of Umbrella,

“Unable to comply Itzerican, Sergei has been for wont of a better phrase, accosted by the Supraster on Diplomatic business, tertiary relays initiated and duplicate transmission has been confirmed, brief contact will be possible, Initialising Shadowfeed linkages.” Izion replied wireframe diagrams shifting before the figure of IXION as the signal was bounced around the world via the impenetrable and undetectable Shadowfeed, the Novan Communications Net that had recently been perfected in past years and was nigh on fully operational.

“Ah Mutterama, my old friend, it is good to be seeing you again, yet I trust your communication is not to socialise or catch up,” came the voice of Sergei, his weathered features blinking into view, the umbrella Icon twisting in a corner, his weathered face in a neutral expression with a decadent alien background hovered behind him, ill at contrast with his humble Novan garb.

“Indeed Sergei,” with a flourish he presented the Data crystal to the terminal screen, “I require you to direct the release of the Kirelzigan 6 Prototype Weapons Dossier to front line service in accordance with Military Pasherak Directive Cestus 89A, I’m looking forward to seeing these Tokontu’s of yours in action, the test results were exemplarily apparently, Eleanor spoke of them in glowing terms.”

“Ah, It would seem that my task is but unending, nevertheless it is a good feeling to know that our creations will see battle, and that our soldiers will have the invigoration of surviving the battle through application of superior tactics, technologies and will,” Sergei nodded his head slightly before starting again, “Red Queen, White Queen, Helix King, Proceed with Final preparation for Military Production,” the words were evidently not meant for the Itzerican, as the Umbrella Logo roiling in the left corner twisted, a wire frame briefly appeared over Sergei’s weathered face, before he nodded once more. “Mutterama my old friend, The Tokontu will serve you well, they are Umbrella’s Ultimate creation, Ixion has received the Protocol for initial deployment, their Combat AI is one of our finest, but it shall still require initial linkage in actual combat, not that whoever you will be facing will understand the truth, until it is to late, I wish you well old friend, I must go,” smiling before ending the transmission it winked out leaving the air a shade cooler as the elevator continued it’s slower than usual descent.

“IXION, get the supplies loaded onboard and instruct the Mechnicians to make the necessary adjustments to the fleet, the Tokontu requires slight alterations over the Tokon’s more epicurean Racks,” Began the Itzerican mentally running through a mental checklist as he inserted the Data Crystal into what appeared to be a palm sized half ziggurat traced with Novan Caligraphs.

“Itzerican,” returned IXION, his digital palm raised in a sign of respect but patience, “all is in hand, you may leave yourself to your meditations, Umbrella’s forwarding of the Data has allowed me to relay the preparation orders in advance, Delivery is expected to replace 80% of standard Tokon Compliment, which would put us at an estimated 2:1 Ratio for outnumbering, opposed to usual 17:1 with the Tokon, this will be offset by considerably lower rate of attrition, Supplies for the Weapons Modules are being loaded, it appears, word evidently was relayed ahead of time.” The wire frames of the Tonoktu’s Maintence “pod” shimmered and shift around his form, as charts and schedules rotated around his form as data files from Umbrella were cross referenced.

“Food for thought indeed, Carry on IXION, I want to depart at earliest convenience, reinstate Elevator operation and lock down the next available Monorail section, I want to be back aboard the Partovanian within the hour.” The word was given as he continued to brood, the journey to the Kikarelas Naval Base to the far north of Novesia would take time, but by the Zondoyal Protocol would have been carried out and his forces battle ready, although British Londinium’s Allies, if any where at present were unknown, one thing was certain, the allies of Novacom stood at his side, as he condemned himself once more to war.

Several hours later after much transferring of materiel, the ever ready Novan War Machine stalked into action, as the assembled fleets departed their Destinus Ports, now laden with new designs now more than ever, while before the Tokon had ruled the literal roost, now it’s successor, the Tokontu, majestic Firebird Phoenix of war would take the fore, and while it would take many days to reach the combat zone, the fleet was hurtling towards destiny like a hidden black tide, as already in advance a brood of the Tokontu had went in advance observing stealth Protocol, their Vaekar Armour scheme using Polymer skin and a variety of Cameras and other methods in addition to a variable geometry design as basic it was able to reconfigure it’s layout to be conducive to radar dampening in conjunction with radar absorbing materials in combination with everything else made it nigh on invisible, yet able to adapt to combat when stealth’s use would end, they were the harbingers, and when the time for combat came they would bear their crimson colours and Novan markings with pride.

Official Communique of the Telrosian Republic

I, the acting President of the Telrosian Republic, cannot stand by and watch as the Londinians massacre their own people. However, I will not resort to war on such an occasion. I must find it ridiculous that others would resort to war against such a thing. True, it is a sickening sight to see and hear five million people get cut down in their streets, and the action is considered "keeping law and order" in their nation. However, war must never be the solution, never the answer. War is the last resort, and only when ones allies and ones own nation is under attack.

As such, I will do what I can as the President of the Telrosian Republic. We open our doors to refugee's from British Londinium, any who see a home and haven from tyranny and totalitarianism, come to Telros. We will watch over you, and your freedoms. I have already signed into being, after an unanimous vote by Congress, to approve the economic sanctions, suspension of travel visas, and the suspension of any treaty-making until the Consul changes his ways and policies, or a new government who will do so is elected.

Now, I do not do this lightly. I, more than anyone, want the utmost economic prosperity for my nation, but there are times when we must make our voice heard about this issue. The Consul seems to have forgotten what has happened to his nation because of actions like these. Telros is restrained, but others may choose the war, as many have already begun on.

However, I would like to second the Akimonadian call for a meeting to discuss the implications of this action, and work out the solution peacefully. I wish the utmost peacefully end of this dilemma, and look forward to diplomatically solving this problem before us, together with British Londinium.

Thank you.

Signed,
President Rachel Freeman

“ Ongoing sector sweep in accordance with Red Alert status. Terrorist activity confirmed. Continue surface sector sweep.” blared the Orwellian loudspeakers.

“A lesser mortal might be worried” she thought, remembering her training and pre-planning. Only an idiot would have missed the cameras. Kathrine Lyria, now walking behind a townhouse complex, out of view of any cameras that she could detect, dropped to her knees and produced a KwikPick lockpick set. The door opened in a scant five seconds. She dropped a steel bar across the iron braces, and climbed the stairwell to the common roof, hugging the ventilation shafts that carried either heat or cold air. Above unit five was a dead drop: a change of clothes, this time a grey skirt-suit with matching pea-coat which held four PRA-120 Box Guns; ceramic guns firing non-ferrous tungsten more than capable of sneaking through nearly any security system short of being patted down. Her attaché case held $250,000 in cashiers checks, a few business contracts that would pass initial scrutiny, and a Yanpei P-8 defense weapon, with an applicable (forged) government issue carry permit.

Some more shuffling and she walked out the front door at the other end of the townhouse four minutes after she entered, a completely different woman headed for the light rail station, her ultimate destination a small financial services firm three miles away; her black mirror sunglasses hopefully concealing her identity yet again.

"Of their own accord my arse," Dale quipped.

"My apologies, Mr. Prime Minister," he quickly added noting the disapproving glance of his ultimate boss. "Regardless, Mr. Prime Minister, they have, in essence, acquiesced to the majority of our demands."

"Do they expect a cookie," asked Elisabeth Hill, the Prime Minister's Communications Director.

"No, but the fact remains they have relaxed their restrictions, Liz. Quid pro quo, they get something in return."

"They do not 'need' to get something in return, Kevin," Laird added with emphasis. "The United Kingdom does not 'need' to do anything for any sovereign state unless it serves Oceanian interests. And I fail to see how performing any action for the Londinians furthers Oceanian interests."

"We need not let them lose all face, people." The Prime Minister leaned into the discussion from his customary seat at the head of the couches that occupied the area before his desk. "Admittedly, Mr. Stark has not moved fully towards ensuring a liberal society, but, neither have we. We function without a written constitution and routinely surveil foreign nationals and other persons of interest to the domestic security services."

"Yes, sir, but we do not make it public for the world to know," Dale added.

"Nor do we do it in giant blenders, sir," Hill interjected calmly to a room full of knowing glares.

"Mr. Prime Minister," Laird began, his eyes still staring down Hill, "I think we need to keep an eye on this situation. They have rescinded much of the more prohibitive elements of this Emergency Consular Order and any action of ours should take that into account. However, Stark and his cronies should know that we desire more from them, especially as it relates to making certain that protests need not precipitate any more emergency consular orders."

"What about all this talk of war, Reg," Dale asked.

"We continue to monitor the situation," Laird replied, looking at Dale before turning to face the Prime Minister. "Sir, I think we send a small force–nothing frightening or intimidating–and let all parties know that we are taking the situation seriously. But it has to be small, too large and it could be mistaken for a participant in these pissing contests and like that we are involved in an overseas war over a nation I would rather not commit forces."

Official Statement
Office of the Prime Minister
United Kingdom of Oceania

His Majesty's Government welcomes the steps taken by the sovereign government of the Londinian Commonwealth. While her history runs rife with conflict and unnecessary bloodshed, that her people have survived is testament to a government committed to the preservation of a Londinian civilisation.

Yet, the aforementioned cannot be stated without expressing the continuing reservations of the United Kingdom and His Majesty's Government regarding the arbitrary declarations of emergency orders and other similar legal devices used to curtail civil liberties. While this situation is moving, albeit slowly, towards a full and complete resolution, future situations may prompt the Londinian government to cite recent events as a precedent for violating basic human rights and civil liberties. It is towards this end that the United Kingdom will push its fellow sovereign state to pass statutes to protect basic civil liberties despite issues of consular orders declaring states of emergency.

Additionally, the United Kingdom must express deep concern regarding the hasty and imprudent steps escalating what had been, heretofore, a conflict largely confined in the international stage to a diplomatic crisis to a broader armed conflict. Consequently, the Royal Navy will be dispatching a frigate and an auxiliary to monitor the situation while His Majesty's Government appeals to all parties to allow the situation to resolve itself without devolving into a war.

Official Greal Statement

The Imperial Dictatorship of Greal is appalled by the numbers of the dead that the Londinians have killed. Its bad enough to hear that 5 million people are dead, but those were Londinian civilians killed by their own people. Greal is accustomed to protests by people, but we do not massacre people in it. Greal will however stay out of any war that will happen due to the massacre. We do hope though, there will be no war, and we can solve this problem peacefully.

New Prospect Cafe, Nyquist

Warm, humid air blew softly through the cafe, an unmistakably Vetalian affair with its lavish-yet-geometric designs, soft sounds of technology humming and the complete lack of air conditioning. It just wasn't warm enough to warrant turning it on, at least for the Vetalian clients, who had spent generations in such climes and regarded them with the same comfort as those of a milder climate would regard temperate weather and a cool breeze. In it was the usual crowd of businesspeople, taking their ritual afternoon breaks before returning to the controlled chaos of Vetalian commerce. Two sat at a corner table, their slightly nasal accents identifying them clearly as hailing from the very heart of the Golden Land (an extremely archaic term for Vetalia proper).

They spoke quickly, excitedly, and with a version of Russian that would sound exceptionally crisp and regimented to an outsider. All the product of bureaucratic systematization, the effort to engineer a newer, more efficient Vetalia. "I'll tell you what, I'm still amused that people want to blockade British Londinium...this market's too good for any sane person to pass up. We've been selling everything from neural suppressors and artificial organs to corn flakes and coffee and there's no other competition besides domestic firms, and we're on good enough terms with them to ensure there's no unfriendly rivalry."

"Yeah, take a look at the stores. All Vetalian products; I mean, sure, that's pretty common anywhere we're operating, but it's a whole new level here. I mean, I can find the same things here in Nyquist that I could back home, and that's saying something. You just don't find that everywhere...well, maybe you do find Melnikov's Private Reserve, but that's just bottled watter."

"There are 7.8 million Vetalians here, at last count, so I'm not surprised in the least. God only knows how many of us have Londinian relatives these day, it's got to be in the tens of millions. Plus, with all this controversy, a lot of people are getting the hell out of there. We've made a killing on real estate..."

"Tell me about it. My department's been buying up office space left and right; there are a lot of Vetalian firms moving in to fill the gap and they're paying big for good space."
"I'm personally interested in doing some business with the Overwatch..."

Ongoing sector sweep in accordance with Red Alert status. Terrorist activity confirmed. Continue surface sector sweep. They both paused, staring idly out the window as another security sweep passed. It was inconsequential to them, if only because the Vetalian people were so cordial towards their Londinian contemporaries that dissent towards and fear of their ally's government was alien. Freedom meant nothing when profit was at stake, let alone an entire market. This calculated obedience ensured that the passport and documents of a citizen of the Republic of Vetalia were as good as gold, both literally and figuratively, to the nations in which the 6-billion-strong ethnic group operated.

"My friend over at Cogent tells me they've got some prototypes that could really get rid of their terrorist problems. I think they'd be interested in getting some of our AI technology, especially the new COGNOS system we've been working with. Do you have any idea what Cogent is speculating they'll make once our artificially intelligent friend wakes up and starts thinking for itself?"

"No, what?"
"Sixteen."
"Billion?"
"An order of magnitude higher. Sixteen trillion rubles over the next twenty years...that's almost a trillion a year. Even after all of the Sentient Rights Act stuff is taken care of, we're still grossing a good $700 billion."
"Goddamn...goddamn. W-when are they going to be demoing it?"
"A few weeks, give or take. Can't be too hasty, but if I were you I'd start loading up on Cogent stock right about now."

They both stared for a moment, contemplating the sheer profit from this venture. Nyquist was going to get a whole lot safer, and the Vetalians a whole lot richer...it was that beloved cycle that had kept Vetalian coffers among the fullest and deepest in the world for generations, and they had no intention of letting it slow any time soon.

In keeping with his family's personal doctrine that a strong nation required a strong leader, President Erik Strong liked to begin his day with an hour of Tho Fan practice, so much so that one of his first actions as President was to promote his personal trainer, Viktor, to a high-ranking sinecure in governmental office. He'd been told that his grandfather had been much the same but had let his studies of the martial art slip after just a few months in power because he simply hadn't found the time - there had been innumerable requests for aid and military support, bulletins bringing stories of newly-declared wars, reports on the various anti-governmental sects that believed themselves to be underground and hidden, and Grandfather had paid close attention to them all. Erik took a different approach, something that most of his personal staff already knew but those that had been newly hired were forced to learn for themselves.

It was never a pleasant lesson, either, as the unfortunate young intern knocking at the door to the President's private quarters was soon to discover. Fresh out of CCU and with a grade point average through the proverbial roof, he'd beaten out many thousands of other prospective graduates to secure the plum opportunity and was rightly proud of himself for doing so. His first day on the job had been spoilt somewhat by the fact that secrecy seemed to pervade every facet of government - the only answers he got to every question he asked was some derivation of "I'll have to direct you elsewhere", even simply asking the way of the bathroom...spoilt indeed - but in the passing weeks he had grown to enjoy these quirks for the simple foibles they were.

Had he not been prepared for it, he might have thought the sight that greeted him upon walking into the gymnasium more than a little disgusting; the near-naked President, clad only in a loincloth and a sheen of sweat, appeared to be in some sort of elaborate bodyscissor with another man dressed in a pair of loose trousers. Such was the nature of Tho Fan, though, it did indeed appear a little compromising at first glance - the story about a bored channel-surfer in an unnamed oppressive dictatorship tuning into the All-Nation Tho Fan Championships and being arrested for homosexuality (and later executed for the crime) had recently made the newspapers, with one particularly right-wing columnist calling it "a pleasant side-effect of the national sport". Still, at least the intern didn't have to endure it for long as, on first sight, the President disentangled himself from his sparring partner.

"You're still not vicious enough," remarked the other man who, as the President's current trainer, was one of the very few men who could get away with criticising him in this day and age. "It's not enough to get the dominant position, judges are starting to not score for that alone."

"Are you telling me to break your arm next time?" asked the President, with more than an undertone of sarcasm. Despite the unorthodox setting, the intern was nonetheless a little awed by his sheer presence and, to tell the truth, his physique actually made the intern feel inferior.

"Am I standing in your way of a gold medal?" returned his trainer, wiping down his face with a handily-placed towel. Turning his attention to the intern, the President shook his head in a long-suffering manner and took the file he was being offered.

"Anything interesting?"

It took a moment before the intern realised that he was being addressed, and he naturally stumbled over his words before starting the sentence again. "Not particularly, sir. British Londinium have instituted martial law and killed over five million protesting citizens."

"Good to know they haven't changed," the President remarked drily, raising an eyebrow when he reached the section about the use of the flamethrowers. "Am I to assume that it was greeted with disgust, anger and-"

"Proposals of war, yes, sir," broke in the intern, immediately regretting it as the President fixed him with an unsmiling eye.

"Very well. Inform Janine that I'll be making a call to British Londinium in around an hour."

"Understood, sir," said the intern, doing his best to avoid making eye contract but having the unfortunate side-effect of staring at the President's naked chest. A slight wave was enough to dismiss the intern, who silently thanked whatever god was watching over him that day that he'd found the bathrooms and thus couldn't wet himself. Back inside the gym, the trainer smiled indulgently.

"You didn't force him to defend himself?"

"No," replied the President, altogether more sombre than before. "This isn't the time for games."

[[Seriously, British Londinium hasn't changed a bit, still executing its citizens for the most arbitrary of reasons and pissing off the global community. I love it.]]

"Well, we can't spare a whole lot more resources..." Hodz replied.

"Precisely. We should use Dial-A-Strike."

"Basically a missile strike service from Zeppelin Manufacturers."

By order of Nyquist Metropolitan Civil Protection, nationals are instructed to remain indoors until malignant persons are apprehended. Failure to comply with any directive issued by the Overwatch during sector surface sweeps will result in arrest.

The saboteur had slipped into a back alley, and had, apparently, disappeared off the face of the earth. Cameras tracked her entering, but not a soul had left. Surely this terrorist would not have walked out the front door, reasoned the officers leading the search, but it apparently was the case. Unfortunately for them, tracking her through cameras would be impossible.

"Colonel Williamson to CP," radioed one of the few men in a regular officer's uniform, not the cold, face-obscuring battle dress. "Invoking 98214. Shut down all public transport in the city. Begin assisting Overwatch in roadblock construction. Over."

A few squawks from the radio replied, and the colonel's bidding was done. The search continued.

The Global Radar Tracking Station at Corcyra was a staggering achievement, and the linchpin of the Commonwealth's defense network. While other over-the-horizon radars and early-warning networks dotted Deva Victrix, the GRTS had the longest range of them all, and was the most heavily fortified.

The underground complex that housed the computers that processed the data fed by the radars became a flurry of activity, as the Akimonadi armada passed Naval Defense Line Zulu, which began at the special economic zone waters of the Commonwealth.

Another bank of computers, larger and more powerful than that in Corcyra, was housed underneath the Rachide Mountains, the spine of Deva Victrix. It activated the extensive network of automated anti-ship and anti-air guns that lined the coast, and the torpedo and sonar systems buried underneath the indigo waves. The Royal Navy began creating its defensive formations, and prepared to vanquish the Akimonadi threat.

Perhaps you misunderstood us, but we explicitly stated that NO cargo will be allowed to pass into Londinian waters. You can either profit by this or you can lose business. As allies we will not attack your ships, but they will not be permitted to aid an enemy of the Empire.

Any hostile actions will be dealt with in self-defense.

Unless your government is capable of covering the cost of several trillion dollars in assets and revenue from Londinian commerce, we will not be able to take any other course but military intervention.

Our interests are too deeply intertwined with the Londinian state to break from our countries' mutually beneficial relationship. We will temporarily halt shipping to allow your country to pursue its goals, whatever they might be, but only with the assurance that our firms will receive total compensation for the economic disruption. Otherwise, it is simply too costly to allow this action to go forward.

Official Londinian Communiqué

Mr. Hodz:

It is laughable that you expect the Commonwealth to fold so easily to your threats. You miscalculate your position, because the only outcome of your futile invasion will be hundreds of thousands of dead Akimonadi strewn at the base of our littoral fjords. I am confident that the wrecked hulls of your navy will be recycled for decades into the vessels of the Royal Navy, and those members of your 'invasion force' that do survive will make fine forced laborers. I, for one, prefer peace in this situation, but since you have chosen the route of war, prepare to die.

Official Londinian Communiqué

Dr. Hodz:

Your pretentiousness penetrates yours. To demand the Commonwealth to agree to an unconditional surrender, simply so we can exist in peace, is arrogant in the extreme. The Commonwealth has the right to conduct internal affairs without the fear of the enemy storming its cities, and we certainly needn't sue for peace in a war we did not invite. Akimonad took on the onus of being the aggressor, and since it chooses to continue in its campaign of intimidation, it shall pay the price. The Commonwealth will not back down in defending its people; you have the choice of recalling your forces immediately, or having the Royal Overwatch recall them for you.

South Thasland
25-01-2008, 04:14
Given South Thasland's position in a generally unknown pocket of the world, it was surprising that the events in British Londinium garnered as much of a response as they did. The media, otherwise looking at a typically bleak, slow news week, couldn't resist the temptation of covering such a provocative story. The Thas people turned on their nightly news for several days in a row, only to see the analysts bicker over which side was right, and what British Londinium could do in the situation.

While the likes of STNN and VNN happily ran broadcasts and debates, the South Thas government was rightfully in a state of suspense. Parliament promptly held a closed-door discussion on the situation. The prospect of a referendum was considered. The Mapmaker, the offical Head of State, gave carefully worded speeches condemning the Akimonadi threats. Every possibility was considered. What effect would any descision have on the few allies South Thasland possessed? Would embargos be enough? It was almost funny, considering that any part South Thasland had so far played on the world stage was essentially a mere footnote.

Thus, when the Mapmaker formally declared South Thasland's position, it was understandable that the nation would hold it's breath.

=========================

Offical South Thas Response

The Emirate of South Thasland offically declares that an embargo does exist on all goods traded in and out of Akimonad. Any Akimonadi ships in Thas waters will be impounded, and any goods will be seized.

While South Thasland does condemn the Londinian actions, Akimonad's threats, to us, are of greater concern. We fear that, in it's haste to prove it's place in the world (something that, might we add, does not need proving), Akimonad will itself show a blatent disregard for the lives of it's citizens, and others.

HMS Erudite
At Sea

"Forwarded from the Foreign Office, Captain."

Commander Thomas Clinton thanked the lieutenant, his communications officer, who had brought the printed copy of the digital message to him in his cabin. Unlike many of the other parties increasingly embroiled in a deteriorating situation, Clinton understood the preference of the United Kingdom to remain a distant participatory party–not for fear of failure as foreign powers might assume, but rather for far more practical reasons. Quite simply, the Commonwealth was a risk. And as a risk, Oceanian businesses were particularly wary of investing for fear of their assets being seized by the state, bombed in an invasion or simply vaporised in a nuclear strike.

His frigate was thusly small in comparison to the fleets amassing in the waters off the Commonwealth coast. The Admiralty had ordered Clinton to assume a patrol station in the Doyle Sea in an area stretching from the seas off Corcyra at the southern end and those off Orpington at the northern end. At his discretion, the frigate was running with active radar on at a lower power setting. The Londinians and the blockaders would both be aware of his presence and simultaneously be aware that the transmitters were not at full strength but a non-threatening level. Regardless of the appearance, however, he had ordered his ship to battle stations in preparation for defensive actions and one of his Cormorant helicopters was on alert in case his ASDIC operators detected anything suspicious.

Unfortunately, the assessment from the Foreign Office was less than optimal. So far as all public statements and actions indicated, the two main parties, the Commonwealth and the Akimonad Empire, were stubbornly headed towards an armed clash–probably naval though the Foreign Office could not rule out the possibility of a ground invasion. And if that were the case, Clinton mused while folding the message crisply against the grain of the paper, he hoped the Admiralty would send more than his frigate.

Radovan Noskovic thumbed through the high-gloss prints of the Office of Royal Navy Intelligence's (ORNI) most recent satellite photography of the Londinian theatre. Included along with actual high-resolution photographs were sets of images from radar reconnaissance satellites and thermal images of major ports in the Commonwealth to determine which ships were standing up for immediate deployment to counter the Akimonadi threat. "This is near 400, Jack," the First Sea Lord whistled.

"More along the lines of 500, sir. Mostly concentrated in capital ships and high-value escorts, little in the way of fleet protection–though we do not have sufficient information on the capabilities of the various ship classes to provide a complete assessment of the threat posed to Royal Navy assets currently in theatre."

"Our assets, Jack," Noskovic threw the director of ORNI a cold stare through the space between his brow and the rim of his reading glasses. "Our assets consist of one Type 22 and one RFA oiler."

The director nodded at the chastisement, surmising that the First Sea Lord had strenuously objected to the limited nature of the deployment. "Understood, sir." He waited a moment to let tempers cool before continuing on with his brief.

"If both sides continue to ratchet upwards both their rhetoric and asset deployment, to simply provide adequate defensive measures we shall need to deploy in kind."

"And fall into a feedback loop, Jack? The Prime Minister has made it perfectly clear that we are to appear as non-threatening as possible in the hope that all sides can agree to some sort of face-saving compromise." Noskovic let the images fall flat on his desk to look straight into the director's eyes. "Don't misunderstand me, Jack, I know full well that we ought to have more ships there. Clinton's a good CO and the Type 22 a capable multi-role platform. Should they mess with us we'll give 'em more than a bloody nose. But we run the risk of having these huge fleets take potshots because the commanders have an ego streak the size of Bennington and feel that one frigate is worth the dozens of missiles they'll expend in sinking her."

"And of course any shot at Clinton is an act of war."

"Exactly."

"Perhaps that is just the rationale you need to present to the Prime Minister, sir. With all due respect to the man, if he wants to credibly keep us disengaged from the conflict the time has come for the United Kingdom to send a larger force. Perhaps not a force of five hundred combat ships, and certainly not a fleet comprised of assault ships, but a task force of a few dozen would make both sides hesitate before engaging us. At least more so than they would for a single frigate."

HMNB Zvolen
Zvolen, United Kingdom

Seven hours after Noskovic's conversation with the Director of ORNI, the orders reached the prime naval base in Novikov where a task force was created from the ships ready to sail within 48 hours. While they would not arrive on station for several days after that, the fact that the United Kingdom was dispatching more ships to the Londinian Commonwealth, it was hoped, would signal that the United Kingdom desired a peaceful, negotiated settlement rather than armed conflict.

From: Honoured Chieftain of the White Phoenix Tribe, Honoured Chiefdom of the Tribal Chiefdom of Vetaka Quicksilver

Honoured Counsul Stark,

It is rare that I personally involve myself in affairs beyond my own Tribal Lands after all that is why I have my Tribal Council and Parceltongue after all. However I feel compelled to make my voice heard. To be frank Honoured Andrew yours and your nations position is untenable an Akimonad led coalition marches towards you, the Royal Georgian League, the Questarian Commonwealth and my own United Federation of Allied Nations all debate whether to join the Akimonad in its actions and alas you have few of which you call Allies.

Yet you still seem to think that will win this war Alas Andrew you won't, I admire your strength and your courage in this battle and I wish you nothing but luck on the road ahead however I must at least try and reason with you. Look around you, Look out of the window, your people are battered, bruised and broken. Do they have the will to fight and is this battle required? You massacred them? Are you really leading them or just oppressing them?

My nation shall remain out of this battle as first choice however should my nations help be required as per our Loyalty we will commit what ever forces that are required of us. My Armies if it comes to this will treat you, your men and your land with respect and if it comes to it I hope you will grant my forces that same respect.

Andrew R. Stark, Consul of the Londinian Commonwealth, I urge you to truly think about your course of action.

Yours

Money. In this case counted in the numerous tens of billions. Cold hard immutable cash flowing from one national currency fund to another in a form quite unreal. Fictional gold, the idea of money rather than its reality based on abstract national evaluations made not on hard cold fact but on the estimation of economists and the markets they served. These days ..more than enough to fight a portion of someone else's war for them.

A mission parameter. A relatively simplistic one but given the mostly intact nature of the enemies defences far from without risk. A rousing speech for the pilots selected by a PR vice executives personal speech compiler, a program really no more complex than a music play list. Emailed to the pilots glossy PDAs. After all paying the executive to get up in the middle of the night would just be a waste of money and the pilots in most cases would never read or care where or who they were unleashing there payloads on, merely that the pie charts and bars of the strategic analysis displays never dropped into the red of the profit / loss equation.

It made it all so much easier to never see the burning women and children and of course on the same screens they could see there own personal citizen shareholders stock rating climb with every successful profit making strike.

High Earth Orbit

The battle space recon saturation pods lay snug nestled in a silica based impact foam behind whipple shields. They were heated and checked like a clucking mother hen by the platforms systems, itself really nothing more than an outsize sat which sat at a dull regular daily routine, well out of the hustle and bustle. The recon pods sat looking as innocuous as a heavily converted chasis for a 400 kilo multi warhead delivery system mounted on a 3 metre long solid booster sans RV aeroshell can. If all went according to plan they would continue to sit there, unused for the next twenty odd years before being ripped out, having the boosters chemicals recycled and the metals used as cladding on a habitat module or just allowed to burn up.

Then the signals started to arrive, deep within the pods several dozen ToughCD format optic discs whined up to speed sucking down there mission like so many piglets in a sty. The platform too had received instructions. Whipple shields unfolded like a set of opening geometric flowers along the three solar panel and storage tank studded spider web thin gantries of the platform. Slowly but surely on tiny bursts of a cold gas cell no larger than an aerosol can the pods make there way out into the earthlight, then after they have cleared any possible back blast distance they orientate themselves. Today money makes gyroscopes spin as the cold math of orbital manoeuvring is played out by the simple minded pods. For a mere moment or two dull blue white flares silenty scream into space gas whoms lift costs could feed a third world family for a year as they kick themselves into a decaying orbit. It will take about half an hour for them to reach release point. When they do each will saturate the area they are above with several dozen golf ball sized mini satellites, each acting as a single cell in a massive phased recon array. All of this was not to find the targets surviving forces after the initial radiation seeking missile strikes.

Check. One large eye in the sky.

Pithead, North East Arctic territory, Industry Resource Extraction settlement, Haven

Snow and ice and more snow and ice, dead rock covered slopes occasionally dimpled by the wounds of strip mines and vast rolling icy walls of spoil stained glaciers, the endless white broken by the ugly cubic primary coloured modular buildings surrounded by embankments made out of skree to try to lower the eternal wind chill in the planets largest ice box. It may as well have been Mars and it was just about as sterile in parts. Pithead was a godless hole of a settlement officially constructed purely to support the copper mines that dotted the landscape. From the outside it looked like a crazed jumble of giant kids building blocks with the odd massive rebar built ice sheathed tower jutting into the sky like fingers put up against the face of god. Just under 18,000 miners and a smattering of support staff were based in its plastic covered somewhat dank corridors.

Release was necessary in such an inhuman environment and a few neon covered buildings which outwardly looked like any other served that purpose for many while a few fled to the giant greenhouse of a leisure park at the towns concrete centre. Pithead was the only thing on the surface that would without close view give the base away though in its construction and even then it could have been mistaken for the half dozen other vast mines being build the decade before. It had been for a while quite visible to all the peaking electronic eyes as the artic wind whipped the artificial and soon to be ice vapour clouds the site had been shrouded in. Linked by tunnels only large enough to take the endless conveyors of rubble out or pipe concrete into the half dozen other mines in the area equipment and extraction had gone on to create the airbase. Occasionally a large snow plough would carefully move a large dune of ice for a cargo convoy that "happened" to pass. Who needs concrete when you have ice. Now pretence was gone. It was time for action.

An icy plane 65 miles from Pithead. A line of what where reported to be polar watch aerospace radar domes sat supposedly linked to the state SDI network. Usually silent, now blasting across the ice with inhuman loudness came a woman's slightly distraught voice

"Commence battlestations procedure! Battlestations Battlestations! Check all launch stages! This is a full scale emergency!"

First came the pylons, unfolding up through of all things fake snow in the midst of the icy expanse, metal sticks covered in LADAR emmiters and microwave links and the crazed rainbow covered globes of air defence laser optics at there heights. A veritable antennae farm growing out of the icy rock like an exploded radio shack made garden.

Now quite real slabs of compacted blue ice fountained upwards as hydraulics screamed and a set of huge elevators rose in succession with briefly viewed blast doors ripping open the surface and the iris covered mouths of ducts blasted the remaining slush away with nuclear heated steam straight from the facilities banks of reactors. Tracked dumpy vehicles then roared off these elevators and dozens of ramps in a preplanned black smoke emitting diesel powered ballet. Along what shortly would be the runways harsh angular looking low signature half tracks slammed down linked metal matting before nozzles mounted on there cabs blasted out hundreds of tons of quick setting durable plastic gunk from tanks buried deep below. Rollers mounted on the fronts of half a dozen massive air defence modified TR29s tanks which were rolling of the now constantly operating elevators begin insuring the ice around this plastic is formed into taxi ways within minutes. Finally the elevators rose with the payload they had been intended for, the massive brutish forms of Type 1000 and Corona bombers making there appearance there under wing pods already festooned with long range aerolance AAM systems (really nothing more than cruise missile bodys packed full of generic star streak style AAMs), launch assist solid rocket boosters , countless ARADs, and the dull forms of half a dozen types of bunker and ship busting cruise missile. It took minutes for the final checks before the huge aircraft screeched into the sky on there conventional jets, there nuclear thermal RAMs intakes clawing in air desperate to reach self supporting ignition. The procedure would be repeated again and again from 5 of such polar bases until over 200 of the huge aircraft were smashing through the air on there way to a point some 420 miles from the unfortunate Londinian first strike targets.

Check. One incoming delivery of 12 thousand tons of mostly ARADs, bunker busters and ASMs and cruise missiles all carried to a point well outside air defence saturation range and hurled into the teeth of a nations air defence network.

They would approach from the north. It wouldn't take them all that long. A matter of hours and minutes rather than the days or weeks a naval group would spend. Cruising at Mach 2.4 at 65,000 feet and without the constraints of conventional fuel mass nothing really took all that long aboard a strategic commercial aerial strike force, especially death.

Arctic Ocean
Patrol Sector Plural Z Tango
Near the Alaskan Colonies

The HMS Coronel slowly cruised the ice-strewn waters of the Arctic circle. Her steel bow was covered by a spreading patch of frost; icicles hung from the powerful sixteen inch guns; a small layer of snow blanketed the anti-air batteries. The Alaskan patrol sectors were tranquil, and few units were deployed to Plural Z Tango, especially as all were recalled for Operation Voteporix, the defence of the homeland. The Kensington-class battleship's crew took their job very casually. Sailors, relishing the cold that reminded them of the Victoria they grew up in before the Vivicide, would sit on the guns and the deck and play cards, possibly leaf through the naval newspaper, or even listen to the LBG on the radio. Only the radar stations recieved true attention, and they were mostly automated; computers reported signals and fixed any problems. Amidst the violent turbulence along the equator, the crew of the Coronel had found peace.

All hands, action stations, action stations, droned the same female voice found on the loudspeakers back home. Unknown radar contacts approaching rapidly, bearing mark one-eight-zero.

Sirens blared, klaxons roared. The guns were manned, the newspapers hastily thrown to the ground. The ship waited. The radar contacts, now recognized to be horrifyingly large bomber fleet, obliged by continuing on course.

"Holy shit, open fire!" someone shouted, and soon volleys of missiles, composed of about a hundred each, were in the air. The bullets of the Goalkeepers were far too slow to hit these bombers, and the rolling airframe missiles that did catch up with the bombers were pitifully, mindnumbingly ineffective. At most, two or three bombers would be downed.

In the arctic darkness, the Coronel made a single transmission, informing the Admiralty of the threat.

Hastily, a fleet of anti-air boats, simply floating platforms of CIWS modules, anti-air missiles, and anti-air lasers, in addition to some support submarines, began moving to intercept. If the Coronel's experience was even remotely indicative of the problems these bombers would cause, the ships would have to hit them quite a distance away from the homeland. With any luck, the vessels would make it about six hundred miles from the Commonwealth's territorial waters, but, as several admirals had said, luck had never really been on the Londinian's side. Thus, seven hundred medium-range missiles were launched, timed to intercept the incoming bombers from the north. Capable of locking in on a target, or controlled-remotely from a secure location, these missiles were chock full of Composition J2 explosive; with a shockwave designed to take out fifteen city blocks at a time, these were perfect for disrupting any airborne wave.

"The 1WO on duty on the fleet's flagship, the Empire Class Carrier Vigilant, hurriedly strode down to the Radar Control bank, and swiveled the air search radar operator's plasma screen towards her. What had once been a clear screen, albeit a few ghosts, was swarming with red contacts.
Shit She thought, before grabbing the intercom receiver and hitting the big red button on the pad, for fleet communications.
"General Quarters, General Quarters, this is not a drill! This is not a Fucking Drill!"
Throughout the small 33-ship fleet, sailors and officers alike cursed as they fell out of bed, their supposedly soundtight quarters filled the the screaming wail of the alarm sirens, fumbling on their uniforms, they ran to their assigned checkpoints, manning massive guns and missile batteries. SAM and air search Radar Swept through the air, and Fighters Quartered the sky above. Anyone with even a rudimentary EM detector would see the fleet light up like a christmas tree. The fleet began a short range general broadcast, to dissuade any attackers from deciding the fleet was a target

President Pierce was growing increasingly worried. There have been hundreds of 'World War Threes' in this world, but, the way this was escalating, the term would be put to good use. He reached for a button marked 'comms.' and spoke into a little desk microphone/speaker.

"Miss Anderson, get my Secretary of Defence and the Foreign Affairs guy up here please, quickly as possible. Something we need to speak about"

He thought in silence for another 15 minutes before his peace was disturbed by the two men he'd sent for walking in through the door. Pierce, without looking at them, gestured to two chairs.

"Do sit down, gentlemen"

They sat. Pierce sighed and turned round.

"As you know, I've been watching the BL situation with keen interest and increasing worry at the same time. I'm sure you've been glancing at the daily reports too. I want to do something, and I've already figured out what. Now, all I want is peace in the country, I just want to act for the sake of the people. I think we should send a naval force"

His Defence Secretary interjected.

"But, sir..."

"International waters, John. Just there to try and keep the peace. While I'm against the Londinium government, I'm not against their peoples and the way I see it is this: We are neutral. If everyone is in their right minds they won't declare war on a neutral force for no reason.
In the same sense, they won't deliberately try to get us in the middle of a crossfire, so they'll either move away or not bother fighting at all. So, in a way, we'll be keeping the peace.
We only want to keep the peace and watch, officially, so why open fire on us? Send a message to all nation's forces in and around the area, we're neutral. Especially those Akimonad guys, they seem to be attacking everyone. And nobody knows about that keeping-the-peace-by-getting-in-the-way bit. To: British Londinium and all nation's forces in and around that area
From: J.H.X. Pierce, President of Antigr

We will be sending a small naval force to positions just inside International Waters near British Londinium. They are a neutral force, there to watch and try and keep the peace. We will say again, for those who pull the trigger at anything, they are neutral.
They will be flying the Antigran peace ensign and are there to try and keep the peace.

The annoying, overly-calm female voice rang out again over the network of loudspeakers. “Attention, attention all nationals. A Red Alert is still in effect. By order of Nyquist Metropolitan Civil Protection, nationals are instructed to remain indoors until malignant persons are apprehended. Failure to comply with any directive issued by the Overwatch during sector surface sweeps will result in arrest.”

The voice was really beginning to grate on her.

“They aren’t going to find me” she thought, [i]”because they don’t know who they are looking for.” She idly patted the leather wallet that contained her ID and order of transfer papers.

“Fucking Overwatch” muttered a citizen, “I’ll be late to work again!”

Then it dawned on her; The trains wouldn’t be running, and roadblocks would start coming up… not that there were any better things for them to do… like prevent foreign powers from invading. Kathrine pulled out her PDA, and hit a few buttons. The Eurasians had eliminated close to 5,000,000 citizens; for many, the bodies would not be recognized or even DNA testable, and dental records examinations could take months, if not years. She, however, knew who had been “under the radar,” and therefore above suspicion… and she had a key. Heading topside again, she made her way to this new safe house, one of many, until the roadblocks were lifted. That should only take an hour before the economy of the city came to even more of a grinding halt.

The plot thickens...(SIC, of course, unless you're privy to the discussions between Vetalian businessmen)

"So it's settled then?"
"Yes, I just got word from the Council yesterday. We will be compensated when this whole mess is over."
"Good, good. It's going to have to be big, you know...several trillion plus land is what we want."
"Of course, our Londinian friends will soon realize just how good our rule of their territory will be. Let's just say they love their scientific research as much as we do, and we're more than happy to test out our new innovations in such a receptive market."
"More receptive than Vetalia, in fact. We can't get anybody to go for our physical enhancements; everybody wants brainpower. Not that I'm complaining, I'd rather have our smart accountants than strong ones, but it's not exactly easy for Bioenhancement to profit..."

"We'll see. I think this war will help us meet our numbers..."
"It damn well better. We've been promised a lot in exchange for this."

Comberth Naval Base, Comberth City, The Silver Sky
3rd Naval Armada, One Week Ago

Not many people knew it, but the government of Novacom was one of the best allies The Silver Sky had ever had, bar the No Endorsians and Mekugian Commonwealth. Another interesting fact, was that it had never been publically announced, just one of those things had happened.

Then, somewhere down the line, the Skyian Military was contracted out by the Novans to do some of their dirty work. The contracting worked, and it stuck. The Skyians became the linemen and linebackers to the Novan corners and safeties in American Football.

That's how the 2nd Naval Armada found itself in its current situation. The Novans once again delivered the money and orders.

Luckily the 3rd Fleet had been near port and the 4th Fleet was in on shore leave. It would take a day or so for the fleets to be underway, at which point they would head to a rally point near BL yet to be set by the Novans.

It would be a much different Skyian Navy that the Londiniums and their allies would be fighting against, reforms had swept through the Navy making it more efficient and even more deadly, not to mention the fact that the army had come into possession of new artillery, both gun and rocket.

The operation had received a fitting name from the Skyian commanders, it would be the final showing of British Londinium, not even the Freeks could prepare such a showing without the use of nuclear weapons. British Londiniums time had come.

Operation: Ad Victoriam had begun. Victory was assured from the moment the Novans picked up the phone and dialed The Silver Sky.

Specialis Unda, Within The Akimonadi Fleet

The Nimitz class super carrier Specialis Unda moved alongside the Akimonadi ships looking like just another part of the invasion fleet but deep inside it concealed a secret. A UFAN BlackOps team on the ship that consisted of members of the best special forces teams from each UFAN nation was anxiously awaiting their planned covert mission in British Londinium. As soon as the first wave went through, the team would take advantage of the chaos and perform a HALO insertion. They would then proceed to destroy predetermined coastal guns that could hinder the advancing invasion fleet. It was a small but vitally important task.

The Aurum Domans had wanted to help the Akimonadis in a bigger way but the Vetakan War had only ended several years before and the military was only now rebuilding and rearming. A grant from the UFAN High Council had helped in a big way but even then the Aurum Doman military wouldn't be at full combat effectiveness until at least next year.

“Alert, Alert, Damocles Control Active”

The Itzerican’s head jerked up away from the reports, this was a first, the words had never been heard by Mutterama, it was impossible, yet the terminals around him were shimmering as the wire frames resolved, IXION almost hidden from view from behind them, his Aide’s almost at loss, they had been briefed on the weapon , but battlefield use was unheard of, yet the activation screens were blatant, Control had been distributed the Icon of the Shadowfeed was shimmering as a DNA strand Icon wove itself diagonally over, Genetic Encoding of the Encrypts were in effect, even if someone were able to break into the Shadowfeed, they would never be able to penetrate to these levels, the edges of the associated screens shimmered with a faint haze around the edges as security protocols entered there higher levels as the 4 sword icon of Damocles slammed into the core, the Novan Icon and the four swords merged at the joining and shattered, revealing the orb that was the earth, the satellites that made up the system, their orbits trailing behind creating a lattice of celestial lace, the Satellites blinked as trails of light shimmered between them, ultimately originating from the Ground based heart of the network, yet this didn’t seem to be entirely the case, larger objects within the network also glowed with this originating luminescence, several orbital Space Stations blinked, while an unconnected network of defence satellites hugged the interior, the stalwart defenders of the network.

Itzerican, incoming transmission, Srihacul Valkelok,” interrupted one of the aides, from behind.

“Connect him,” returned Mutterama idly, evidently deep in thought about the possibilities now available to him and his command, it was almost invigorating…

“Itzerican,” bowing his head for a moment before rising it up once more, “As of now, my somewhat meagre command is at your service, We must protect the relays against interference from the ground, however we don’t have the strength to do so after past incidents,”

“Spare me Srihacul, I am aware of your plight, I will arrange for assistance, Dismissed” The Srihacul bowed his head again before the image passed, as Mutterama waved his left hand in impatience, evidently not in the mood for the little formalities his people observed.

The Image blinked out immediately, leaving Mutterama appraising the monitors and stroking his chin deep in thought, “This bears the mark of Sergei’s handiwork, IXION”

“At your call Itzerican,” returned the AI, coming to the fore from behind the images of the Damocles Network.

“Record the following,” he stated pausing for a moment, “Greetings my friends, It seems once again our paths join together, always a good thing. In this transmission is the location of the Rendezvous point,” The Itzerican pauses gesturing to a monitor showing the status of Damocles, “I also have a request to make, Control of Damocles has been granted to me, we require the aid of your space forces to safeguard the relay satalites from interference, I’m sure you know how useful this weapon is, especially after what it did to Nova Britannica,” another monitor blips up showing the destruction of that ill-fated nation, “Damocles has other uses apart from such blunt destruction, it can be utilised for pinpoint strikes, or destruction of cities and hardened positions, or entrenched armies. Victory shall be ours in this campaign, I look forward to your presence at the rendezvous, Itzerican Mutterama Soigan, out.” The Itzerican appraised the monitors around him before calling out once more, “Send that to the Skyians, and I want that recon data from the forward units.”

The sea lapped gently against an endless backdrop of thermally shattered and scorched grey rock and ice. Nothing much living moved upon it here on the open wind exposed shore, no fishing villages dotted it, seemingly only the endless white and grey with the odd wind blasted hunk of wood and the even more unique hunk of man made debris. However occasionally upon this dead coastline a small concrete brake water and a monitoring station sat, its optics every now again glinting in the moonlight. They ceaselessly watched and tested there surrounds, at there base a duo of tiny remote service drone hangers lay, only basic utility models within there cramped heavily weather proofed cubical quarters. The next structure however was no mere monitoring station, it was for one illuminated and surrounded in places by the buzz of diesel engines and the roar of jets.

It was vast and tall at 300 metres but massively built, a sky scraper without windows, angular facets set not for stealth but for strength. lights illuminating its massive ice encrusted plascrete flanks. It and the complex surrounding it faced the sea, inset into the landscape around it the huge brutish forms of bunkers lay, massive ablative sections over there weapons ports while upon the tundra a veritable forest of quite permanently sited antennae and radar domes were spread.

Defence Tor Fortunes Gift’s command centre was large and for all intents and purposes one of the more boring jobs in the ZMDF. Apart from the occasional re routing of a civilian airliner the complex this room was at the heart of had never been in action. Its missile silos had never fired in anger, its batteries had never left the ocean surrounding the Tor a wreckage wreathed mass. This facility was also nearly empty given its scale, it could have housed divisions and indeed warehouses full of thirty year old artic modified tanks and TOW armed IFVs waited them if they ever arrived. In all likelihood though they would never be used and it was just too costly to ship them back. A huge Landcrawler repair depot lay inland from it , its gantries seeming like the ribs of some great dead animal in the ice, with the occasional crew going out to service it via an odd little funicular railway. All on the surface lay simply ticking over.

Flight monitoring officer Philip Samson had for most of his watch been watching the endless flow of air liners, three hours earlier he had reason to contact a sea plane that was out of its assigned air corridor and probably stuffed full of drunken tourists who had realised that while the artic is all very well and nice to visit for the first few days after a week or two things tend to go downhill fast. Sitting in the eerily display illuminated command centre in a Hawaiian shirt (definitely against regulation) and a pair of what appeared to be shorts made entirely from duct tape he was not the only odd figure in the control room. Boredom and the fight against it was one of the primary occupations in Fortunes Gift and the base’s commander had long given up the fight to keep things to “normal” ZMDF standards. By Philip’s elbow a cold half empty mug of coffee bearing some god forsaken popular culture icon lay faded.

It was unnoticed as said elbow jerked backwards. Slamming down the overrides on the main wall screens which presently filled with a dozen images of huge dark winged aircraft, there bearing obviously military, side readings showing its massive infra red return and wire frame pointers outlining damage and stress points gathered from there telemetry feeds and overlayed on the image. First one, then two then three of the feeds went horribly dead. Alarms rang and communications shook through the somewhat disused channels as amongst other things the Defence Tors fire control system wound up a bank of its massed ranks of sky SLAM open cycle nuclear propelled missile launchers.

The aircraft however were clearly going to deal with this issue all on there own. Samson could only watch on in horrified fascination as screams soon squelched came through on four of the coms lines and half the aircrews bio telemetry flat lined. As air craft burst into flaming wreckage, there airframes forced into the wall of there shock cones and wrenched apart explosive bolts flared. The huge engine pods were jettisoned, most still flaring, some gaping there shielding louvres open and there hard scram systems pumped there gaseous reactor cores full of graphite laden concentrated gel.

Type 1000s are about as stealthy as a brick to the face. With this in mind large formations of them operate in fully active seeking mode. Controlling a Type 1000 formation most of the time is therefore somewhat nerve racking and indeed Air Marshall Peter Saunders buried deep under the ice and now glaring at the warning icons popping up with regularity on the primary display arcs of his command centre was more than a little annoyed. It simply should not have been there. Glaring at Samson he thumbed the release command on the nearest touch screen.

There is no cat and mouse, there is simply arriving. After the first dozen IR plumes and active homing signals things begin to happen, half a dozen counter missile pods in the midst of the projected targets discharged like wasps leaving a hive. really they were no more than glide assisted converted light AAMs but they could help. The first response was inhumanly fast and run entirely by the battlespace control network the local peer to peer warcom network was supporting. Now though it needs permission. When Saunders touches the screen by the miracle of tight beam encrypted communications and modern fire control response no less than 25 short range ASROCs, four CAPTOR pods and a single salvo of harpoon scale rocket assisted glide ASM warheads detach with the dull finality that spells icy death for those below. In all of this no pilot pulls a trigger.

Throughout dully illuminated display haloed command pits panic spread, not about losses but mostly "how did we miss it?". Slowly it spread in a wave of memos all the way up to one of the three operating massive sub surface Milicom cencom facilities under whoms aegis the operation was officially run until it reached executive non military ears. Inquiries were to be made about how this vessel could have been overlooked when it was so close to actually patrolled waters.

Fire in the sky would be ..responded to.

Air crew sub culture in the ZMAF as in other operational air forces tends not to discuss or even think of the dead in an active squadron. The pilots of the dial a strike service couldn't and wouldn't, and while the guilt ran deep the large amounts they could see displayed in there bank accounts ran deeper. None the less this early portent did not bode well and thus calls were made from the cockpits. Elderly men and women with bank accounts that bulged on the profits of death were woken and told to quite quickly get to there nearest battlespace networkable ops centre.

The Type 1000s rush onward, course updates flickering through there guidance systems every few minutes. Pilots do not like to be unsure and a stern barking order from the flight lead goes out. Now the target knows, now things must be ..rethought. Quite human eyes now look over endless reports being generated by the orbiting glass ones and new naval movement projections are created. A literal army of over thirty thousand analysts stagger through the vast amount of dumb data that has already gone through half a dozen iterations of artificial sifting. A logic tree plan is selected thrown through half a dozen super computers sitting in various bunkers and then uploaded.

The Type 1000s change course. At first its not much, but it will put them by the time they arrive attacking the eastern coastline instead of the northern. Admittedly longer exposed to the enemy, but they were only there to release munitions, not to interdict the airspace.

Submarine U-203, Antigran Expeditionary Force

The U-203 was one of the newer submarines in the Antigran Navy. A Class III SSBNK, it was the largest sub ever made for the Antigran Navy and served as a hunter-killer and 'boomer'. However, class did not matter. What mattered, at least for the moment, was number. There were 10 other submarines, 27 Destroyers/Lead Destroyers, 18 Frigates, 4 Aircraft carriers, A Battleship, and 7 cruisers. Plus a number of logistics ships. Not the biggest of fleet, but tough.

In the command room, a message came through the radio, heavily encrypted.

"Come in, shark, this is den. Come in shark, this is den, over"

"This is shark, come in, over"

"You're going to come out of international waters in the next hour. Update, forces to look out for, there's a few ships from the Akimonad blocade around, and some others, presumably stragglers from other nations. Got the latest IGNS update? Over"

"The mast is raised, over"

"Good. Best of luck to you, den out"

Flags fluttered and snapped in a not so military fashion and pennants rippled in an all to pleasant air to suggest the possible blood bath that could follow. Sailors and marines lined the decks of the Waldenburger fleet as it steamed through an open and blue sky, marred by nothing more than a flight of F-40’s that in so much as was possible attempted not to break the tranquility of the day. The fleet itself, while potent, was comparatively small and its wake was hardly a ripple on the sea.

The WIS Adixum, a hydrofoil tender, attended itself with most of the glory, it’s five hundred meter long body slowed the fleet down considerably, but as the crew leisurely walked the deck in the near tropic son, it seemed there was no hurry in the world.

“…So they gave us a destroyer flotilla?” One officer asked as he resignedly stared out of the command bridge of the Adixum, and watched a game of shuffleboard being set up on the deck, which the marines seemed to be winning.

“We are no naval power, you know that better than I, perhaps we are to be light and swift.” Another officer more elaborately dressed than the first joined his friend by the window.

“I don’t suppose we were given any specific orders though?” The second man asked tentatively as he snapped his fingers equally fretfully.

“I’m afraid not, we are,” the man’s face blank over, “To assist the Londinian Commonwealth as best benefits the situation, and overcome all enemy forces opposed to us, while maintaining the honor and dignity of the Waldenburg Empire. The Admiralty has given us some range of autonomy, however we are to be subordinated to overall Londinian control. Take a message please."

To: The Londinian Admiralty
From: Rear Admiral Sir Eric Kuoching (OC) WIS Adixum, Commanding

Under further order of the WHC we have been placed under your subordination in respect to this theater and any possible combat therein. The Minister the Home Office has also raised 17,000 infantry to be used as seen fit by Londinian officers, and shall be disembarked when a location is given.

SRSS 'Aurora'

It's no secret how extensive the Skyian Space Force was, established many years ago with the purchase of Lunar Orbit combat ships from Izistan and Whyatica, it went on to win decisive battles in space, and with the revamping of the fleet with Mekugian Space ships it was deemed necessary to establish a fleet headquarters on the moon to complement the four orbital stations.

Admiral Hood sat in the bridge of the SRSS 'Aurora', one of six Aurora-Class Cruiser (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v203/jay3135/ships/AURORA.png) in Skyian service, which in turn was stationed in orbit over Base Endymion, the Skyian Space Force HQ, he was waiting for his time to take his place on stage next to the other actors in this play called war.

The ships impressive banks of SIM-1000 Areas Space to Space Missiles and chemical lasers showed just the kind of creature the ship was, a killer waiting for prey.

"Admiral Hood, we have received a transmission relayed to us by the SRSS 'Shield'."

"Continue." Responded Admiral Hood.

"It says the Novans have asked for us to safeguard the Damocles' Relay stations near British Londinium, seems like they're taking off the gloves."

"That's odd, it's not normal of the Novans to ask for help in guarding what some considered to be their most precious, and expensive, weapon. However, we can't turn down their request, contact the Epsilon Fleet, tell them to meet us en route to the rendezvous point, that should give us sufficient forces. Send a message back to the Novans saying we accept, it should be about a day to the rendezvous point."

Official Declaration

The Autocratic Federated Empire and the Londinian Commonwealth have reached an acceptable settlement through private channels.

It is thus that we announce the end of our hostile intentions. As a result, we will be occupying the city of Fitzrovia and the surrounding metropolitan area. This zone, to be known as the Fitzrovian Mandate, will be returned to British Londinium when they have been deemed worthy of full unification again.

Peace has been made.

~Dr. Jules Hodz,

First Fleet, near Fitzrovia

"A peace has been made." the captain said to the admiral. "We've been ordered to proceed to Fitzrovia and begin occupying it."

The admiral snarled. Not a shot fired. "Alright. I'll go, begrudgingly." he said.

The fleet moved towards Fitzrovia. It stopped about three nautical miles offshore. The ships originally intended to land an invasion force moved out of the fleet and towards the shore. Helicopters ascended from the Wasp assault ships and began ferrying men and supplies to the shore. Landing craft disembarked from the ships and landed on the beach, offloading their cargo.

Eventually a group of 3000 marines entered the city in light transports. They made their way through the city, asking for directions to the main governmental building, where they would take control.

A short message was transmitted to the authority in the area requesting for them to cooperate and prepare for the transition of power.

The Akimonadi's weren't the only nation to recieve something in from British Londinium after they surrendered. The Akimonadi's successfully acquired the city of Eryx and it's the land surrounding the city for 25km out [OOC: 25pixels from the city center, I assume your map is 1km=1px.] for the Armed Capitalist Republic.

The aboard the Peligro-class amphibious assault ships of the new Eryx Naval Defense Forces, comprised of the 25th and 26th Carrier Battle Groups from the 3rd Fleet, MH-35 Kingfisher Medium Lift and ARV-94 Black Eagle Attack Helicopters began to lift off the noisy crowded decks and make their way towards the city outskirts of the city and in some cases the harbors, especially any former military docks.

These troops were to make way for the combat engineers that would follow them as well as to keep peace in the city after the Londinium Overwatch left, they were notified 2 hours before the occupation officially began.

Other troops with heavier weapons were being deployed via LCACs to the beaches outside the city to find good positions for bases along the border. Within the day most, it not all of the 3rd Marine Corp, would be on dry land, and Eryx would be from the Londinium Tyranny.
