Death and Rebirth (Future Tech Intro)

The Earth Axis
15-01-2008, 19:48
(OOC: This is an timeline for a planned Future Tech nation I intend to roleplay. Basically, my nation is an alternative version of Earth that developed somewhere else in the galaxy, but is ravaged by a vast nuclear war in the mid-21st Century that leaves billions dead and large areas of the planet uninhabitable. The roleplay I intend to do here is to do first contact with any particular space-nation that happens to wander by and develops close links - think a bit like First Contact with humans in Star Trek in the aftermath of World War Three. My NS population is only 8 million at the moment, and thus intend to do a degree of small-scale, character- and country-developing RPs until my population reaches somewhere around a hundred million as stated in the timeline.

So, if one (and one only right now, please) RPer is interested, than feel free to jump in with discovering my version of Earth. Hope you enjoy. :) )

"Then the Anti-Christ emerged from the sea,
And said thank-you boys, look what you've done for me,
You've built your tomb.
Can't fight fire with fire, it's not a way to be,
One rule for you, another one for me,
The Precursor of Doom"

2016: The United States of Europe (USE) officially comes into existence, with a Head of State elected from each country's population. English becomes the official language of the USE. The European Defence Force (EDF) comes into being, jointly controlled by a High Command of each member country's Commander-in-Chief.

2020: The United States of America, the United Mexican States and the Dominion of Canada enter into the North American Union (NAU), a political superstate tasked with defence, welfare, policing, and overall economic coordination. The same year, the South American Union (SAU) comes into being, comprising each nation in the central and southern continent.

2026: Russia joins the United States of Europe, providing significant military forces to the European Defence Force. Scientists in California successfully establish the first stable fusion reaction.

2028: An Islamic Revolution in Saudi Arabia deposes the royal family and establishes the Islamic Republic of Saudi Arabia. Similar revolutions across the Middle East topple governments in Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan.

2030: The Middle Eastern revolutionary countries form the Islamic Caliphate, with Iran in a leading role. The Amalgamated Islamic Guard (AIG) forms the defensive forces of the Caliphate.

2032: The Islamic Caliphate launches a full-scale invasion of Israel, meeting fierce resistance from Israeli Defence Forces. Despite this, the Israeli country falls within a month of fighting, and becomes the Israeli Occupied Territory. Widespread condemnation from the USE and the NAU furthers to increase tensions between the new superstates.

2038: China forms its own superstate to compete with other organisation with the other Asian Republics. The Asian Union (AU) comprises China, Taiwan, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, South Korea and Japan. India and Pakistan remain independent, as does North Korea. The first commercial fusion power plant goes online in San Diego, California.

2040: The African Union gains greater administrative powers and effectively becomes the superstate on the African continent.

2045: A coup in Turkey topples the civilian government and causes a civil war between secular and Islamic forces. The Islamists formerly petition for assistance from the Caliphate, whilst the EDF is obliged to deploy to protect a member of the USE. The two sides effectively secure the northern and southern areas for the secular and religious factions respectively, but avoid direct confrontation on the factional front lines.

2046: The Asian Union signs a mutual defence treaty with the USE, guaranteeing military support in the case of open conflict. Commercial fusion reactors become widespread, generating the majority of power requirements for the world. World population reaches approximately 8.5 billion humans.

2047: Civil unrest regarding population overcrowding occurs in the Asian Union and areas of the NAU. Turkey is officially split into two states, the Republic of Turkey in the north and the Islamic Republic of Turkey in the south. The USE and the Caliphate deploy substantial troops into their respective areas of influence.

2048: Anti-NAU parties come to power in several countries of the South American Union, advocating greater protectionism against North American economic power. The NAU responds with boycotts of South American goods. The South American Union signs a mutual defence treaty with the USE. Hardliner Islamists come to power in the Islamic Republic of Turkey. The first commercial laser weapon is tested at the Bridling Down Weapons Facility in Shropshire, England.

2049: The Islamic Republic of Turkey launches a unilateral invasion of its northern neighbour, and fires on both Republic and EDF forces. The USE declares war on the Islamic Republic, prompting the Caliphate to declare war on the USE. In line with their defensive treaties, the South American Union and the Asian Union declare war on the Islamic Caliphate. EDF and Caliphate forces engage directly in central Turkey. The Asian Union launches an invasion of Afghanistan and Kazakhstan on the Caliphate’s eastern border. The NAU and the African Union declare neutrality.

2050: Tensions between the NAU and the SAU boil over into military skirmishes along the southern Mexican border. The Caliphate, fighting a war on both fronts, pulls back forces in the east to consolidate their position. The Asian Union occupies Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Afghanistan before pushing towards Iran. NAU forces attack SAU troops stationed in Guatemala as retaliation for SAU hostility. The SAU declares war on the NAU, prompting a declaration of war by the USE on the NAU. Unable to commit large numbers of troops, the USE sends a token force to assist the conflict in Central America.

2051: First tactical nuclear weapons to be used in open conflict used by Caliphate forces on the eastern Iranian border due to the pressure of a two-front war. Two divisions of Asian Union forces wiped out when ballistic missiles strike temporary bases in Afghanistan. In retaliation, the Asian Union detonates a nuclear device over Tehran, killing several thousand. The Islamic Republic of Turkey unilaterally launches several tactical weapons into the northern Republic, killing hundreds of EDF troops and a large number of civilians. Conventional warfare temporarily halts as commanders on both sides assess the strategic situation. A temporary truce is declared on both fronts in December.

2052: In January, hardliner Generals in the Unified Islamic Guard gain control of a substantial quantity of Caliphate strategic weapons, and launch a full-scale strategic nuclear attack on cities in southern Europe, western China and several major cities on the Southern American continent. Countries in both the USE and the Asian Union respond with their own launches at targets across the Middle East. Several million die in the attacks. The NAU takes advantage of the situation to push through Central America and into the heart of SAU territory. Facing a shortage of conventional forces, the SAU retaliates with tactical nuclear weapons against the NAU, obliging the USE to attack several targets on the eastern seaboard. The NAU retaliates on the USE with missile strikes across Western Europe, leading to nuclear attacks by the Asian Union on the west coast of America. Total exchange equals approximately 4-5,000 megatons of explosives. Thousands of tons of dust are blown into the atmosphere, causing freezing temperatures across the planet. Radioactive fallout begins to set in across the world. Over a billion people die in the immediate exchange, with hundreds of millions following from radiation poisoning. Civil unrest breaks out over food and water shortages.

2053: Most government systems in anarchy, with breakdowns of society. Military coups in several American, European and Asian states lead to any idea of continuing armed conflict. Victims of radiation poisoning continue to die in their droves. The population of the world drops from 8.5 billion to less than 1 billion in a single year. Countries begin to consolidate survivors into certain areas, forming slum-like megacities in New York, San Francisco, London, Glasgow, Moscow, Berlin and Shanghai to ease the distribution of aid to survivors. Large areas of America, Europe and Asia remain uninhabitable due to radiation levels.

2054: Radiation victims reach their peak, with world population dropping to less than one hundred million. Famine, disease and civil unrest cause further deaths, with governments imposing draconian punishments for the most minor of infractions.
