The RABC logo - an embossed gold pyramid with concentric circles radiating from the top on a black background - slides across the screen, with the caption "RABC National News Update - 6:30". The screen, after showing the viewpoint of a camera flying down New Brisbane River, fades out to show interviewer Bruce Pritchard.

Pritchard: Welcome to the 6:30 National News Update. Today, we present an amazing yet horrifying top story. About a week ago, the Union Navy starship Mariner, captained by James Jackson, left port on a standard reconnaissance mission. It never returned. However, early this morning, Captain Jackson contacted the Republic Ministry of Defence with some very, very bad news.

Footage is shown of the invasion of Vuhifell. Three seconds from the end, Vuhifell Major explodes into fragments. The explosion spreads across the solar system, and the log cuts out.

Pritchard: What you just saw was the destruction of a planet named Vuhifell. Its solar system was being invaded by a race called the SASM, as far as our sources can ascertain. When Captain Jackson sent this footage back to Kostemetsia, he was serving in the Vuhifellian Navy after being summarily and illegally dismissed from the Kostemetsian Star Navy by the Commodore of a support task group. About three days prior to the destruction of Vuhifell, Jackson had made first contact with the Vuhifellians and two other races - the Alversian Republic and the Thrashian Star Empire - in a system known to them collectively as Sigma Delgrassa. During this time, he helped fend off an attack by the Hand of Gold pirate faction.

Currently, Captain Jackson is piloting the modified staryacht Good Cause, and commanding a five ship support task group protecting the Vuhifellian refugee fleet as it finds a new home. More Kostemetsian vessels are scheduled to join the fleet as it flies through interstellar space.

And that's the RABC National News Update for today. Thank you for watching, and we will be back.

The RABC logo screen and music plays again, then fades into an advertising break.

(OOC: This broadcast covers the "First Contact" thread and the beginning of "A Homeworld Lost".)
