***Official Statement***
From the desk of Tyler Hutchins, Prime Minister, Commonwealth of Tolvan
Pirates. Buccaners. Corsairs. These are all names used to describe one of the world's oldest and most despicable professions. Long celebrated in film and print, these murderous thieves have plyed the seas of the world, killing, raping, and stealing. For too long the decent and civillized nations of the world have not done enough to address this blight on our world.
Pirates are a threat to the very Freedom of the Seas that most nations hold so dear. The Commonwealth of Tolvan has long been at the forefront of battling piracy in all its forms. From the the Strait of Malacca, to the Barabary Coast, to the shores of East Africa, and even the waters of the Carribean, the brave men and gallant ships of the Tolvanic Navy have led the way in the effort to vanquish this scourge from the seas.
For awhile we thought we had achieved vistory, piracy was a dying practice in most places, the days of large pirates ships roaming the seas are gone, replacing them were thugs who command speed boats. Their cannons have given way to RPGs and machine guns. The Jolly Roger has been replaced with the Crescent of Islamic radicals and the banners of rebels, terrorists, and miscreants of every ilk.
The International Merchant Marine Bureau's 2006 Annual Piracy Report (APR) cites a 43% increase in pirate attacks around the world resulting in the deaths of nine people, the seizure of eight vessels, and losses approaching $1.05 billion in 2006 alone. The numbers for 2007 are estimated to be as much as 50% higher than those already intolerably high levels.
It is clear piracy poses a real and serious threat to every nation whose citizens sail the open sea and threatens the very way of life of islands nations like my own. This threat must be met by the free and civillized people of the world and turned away as have so many others.
To this end the Commonwealth of Tolvan is holding the first ever International Summit on Piracy. The Summit will be held here in Brayton, Tolvan in two weeks time (NS time) and will be focused on addressing the problem of piracy and what must be done to counter it.
A formal reception will be held on the first day of the Summit and the actual discussions will take place on the second day, followed by a tour of the Churchton Naval Base and a banquet. The third day will feature closing remarks and a closing recpetion.
God speed and I hope to see you here to address this problem.
