The assembled officers and general staff of the KGB, the security and intelligence agency of the Soviet Federation, made hushed whispers amongst themselves, exchanging glances between groups and making vague suggestions and spreading rumours of what could await them. KGB had been, insofar, only been involved in internal security ops; removing dissidents, expelling supposed spies, executing hordes of traitors, et-cetera. This was to be its first major overseas operation and the agents had much to learn, both in terms of training and operational objectives. They all knew that the end objective of KGB was to Destroy Capitalism and Secure the Motherland, but this was a rather vague objective and there had not yet ben any suggestion of what could come in the middle. The thousand or so KGB staff hushed, creating a vacuum of noise and an incredible silence in the auditorium as Field Marshal Vasily Ignatykov (or more commonly reffered to as VVI, for his initials) stepped up to the podium to address the officers.
"Men of the KGB - you are all assembled here today, from Lieutenants to Major Generals, to receive the briefing of the first external operation in the history of the State Security Commitee. This information is super sensitive, Comrades - it is imperative that you do not mention this meeting to anyone, even your closest family or Comrades."
Still, silence. There was not a word of noise; it was as if the world had stopped. Everyone knew that what VVI said, goes. You don't cross the Chairman of the Commitee for State Security of the Soviet Federation.
"Excellent. Now we may begin. Comrades, the worker's paradise formed here by our forefathers and kept secure by us is the ultimate haven of freedom and the most powerful socialist country in the world. However, we are only small, and on the horizon looms many many more powerful nations than we. Through military might we have kept the Doomani in check across our northern border, but there are other nations across the oceans as strong as they, and they are many times our size. To secure Socialism, we have built it in our own country. Now it is time to build it overseas, but not yet with military force."
A thunderous applause from the crowd; they know when to please Comrade Marshal VVI for his blatant and quite badly prepared speech.
"These nations are strong, but they are not invincible. We can defeat them, Comrades. But after we understand them; how they work, the size of their military and their economic power. The glory of Communism will prevail. It is your job Comrades, it is the job of the KGB, to discover intel on these countries. In the following weeks we will expand KGB, train new agents, gather intelligence on foreign countries, and establish bases across the world from which our intelligence will flow like the rivers and streams of the motherland."
"But it will take many years until we are ready to strike, and it is best that we leave that to the Armed Forces. It is our job to gather intelligence on the foreign capitalists. You will soon receive your briefings and your training schedules. Many of you will receive overseas postings. Your hard work has been recognised Comrades; it is now not the worker, the farmer, or the engineer who is the pioneer of Communism. For they have built the foundations on which Communism can be achieved, because we will not have Communism until the entire World is Communist, and for that great task Comrades, you are the pioneers."
Thunderous applause, and some mixed feelings in the audience. Some like their cushy office jobs, some are eager to be posted overseas. Only time will tell the measure of the success of OPERATION BREAK DAY.
