Krakhazian Socialist Party Re-Elected, Opens International Relations
Kapital, Krakhazia: In a landslide victory in both the Congressional Parliament and the Presidential Elections, the Krakhazian Socialist Party (KSP) were celebrating their re-election yesterday following intense debate as to the direction of the country.
The KSP's primary rival at the polls, the right-leaning Krakhazian Democratic Party (KDP), saw a humiliating defeat after speculation of a close-run election and a 'hung' Parliament.
Speaking at the KSP Headquarters during a celebratory drinks gathering, President James Darlington thanked his Cabinet, the Party Leader and all activists within the KSP for the resounding success.
"Our achievements at the ballet box are entirely down to the tireless work of our party organisers and those who firmly believe in the furtherment of our political cause," he declared to raucous applause. "Now, with a huge public mandate, we can continue with our promises to continue and expand democratic socialism within the Republic."
The KSP left the ballot boxes with 212 out of 300 seats in the Congressional Parliament, gaining thirty seats more than their first election five years previously. The KDP saw a fall from 73 seats to 42, losing many to the KSP. The Green Party saw an increase from 16 to 20 seats, whilst the remaining 26 seats were taken by the Krakhazian National Front (KNF), who saw an increase from 15 seats five years ago.
One high-ranking KSP activist described the victory as "fantastic." Speaking during the celebration, Jennifer Waits, KSP Deputy Party Leader, emphasised the possibilities for the party. "We are now able to push forward with policies that were difficult to push through Parliament five years ago due to the greater prominence of the KDP. This victory shows that we have a clearly defined public mandate for our principles and our cause."
One such policy being implemented is the re-opening of international diplomatic relations. The Ministry for Foreign Affairs was closed ninety-three years ago by the then-Kingdom of Krakhazia due to the King Julian II's xenophobic mistrust of foreign powers. The policy of isolationism remained throughout the following years, with Krakhazia remaining completely neutral during all word events until today.
The KSP, elected upon the promises of spreading greater democratic involvement, emphasising social welfare and seeking to progress the quality of life for all citizens, also promised to re-enter the international scene in order to further these goals. This move, opposed by the KNF, the KDP and isolationist Socialist MPs over the last five years, prevented the KSP from pushing the neccesary legislation through Parliament to re-open the Ministry. However, President Darlington has promised the this legislation shall be the first motion tabled in the new Parliament, and is already encouraging foreign nations to make contact.
A spokesman for the KDP said that the party was "dissapointed" with the results of the election. KDP Party Leader Alexander Gillian was unavailiable for comment.
