The Republic is one of the larger future-tech organizations, and is probably the one with the most unique structure. Though we post recruitment threads sporadically, I believe, at this time, with population at an all-time high, with activity levels, both internally and externally high, and with more benefits than ever given to joining, the Republic is an advantageous place to join for most nations.
This thread can be used as a resource on the Republic for nations who don't know much about it, as well as a place you can put a request for joining.
Also, if there are any legitimate complaints about the thread - if you think I've misrepresented something about the Republic, or have put up false information in this thread (or missed true information), feel free to place it here. If it's just "lol fuck the Republic", kindly do not post in this thread. It's not the place for it.
The Republic
Firstly, it must be noted that the Republic is not an alliance in the vein of the Extra-Solar Union of Systems, or the Galactic Federation of Free Alliance. Rather, the Republic is a nation. This is advantageous in some ways, yet poor in others. The most important thing to keep in your mind, though, is that, when joining the Republic, you will forfeit your sovereignity as a nation.
This is the biggest stumbling-block to overcome, and if you feel you could not ever let anyone else command the defense of your nation, let anyone else command one of your armies, or let a central Senate decide foreign policy for you and the rest of the Republic, the Republic probably isn't for you. By the same token, however, you can command the armies of others, participate in the Senate, and help to draft and vote in new laws.
The Republic has three main bodies. The Senate, the People's Assembly, and the Praetorial Court.
The first, the Senate, is where most Republic policy is directed from, and where most the activity happens. The Senators there debate and vote upon foreign policy, military reforms, and other issues regarding the Republic. Senators are appointed by merit, it must be noted, so nations with more activity within the Republic will naturally tend to gain more Senators.
Most new members will not gain Senators straight-away. The Republic does not offer new-joinees all the benefits the consistently active members already have. However, provided you are active within the Republic, one can probably expect Senators within a matter of weeks - or even days, depending on your activity.
The Senate is ruled over by two elected Consuls, who are elected bi-monthly. The Consuls appoint various Senators to positions such as
The second is the People's Assembly. Here, everyone receives three representatives from their nation, as well as ten elected representatives, that are elected on a bi-monthly basis. The People's Assembly is the legislative body of the Republic, and can pass laws on such things as slavery, the legality of secession from the Republic (both of which are being debated presently), and, whilst generally the least-frequented body, all members tend to have nigh-equal representation there. The
Lastly is the Praetorial Court. The highest court in the Republic, the Praetorial Court has the authority to rule on and imprison even the Consuls, and three Praetors are elected on a bi-monthly basis.
Note that elections for all of these are alternating, and so at least one election is held each month.
Those three systems are the basis for the Republic.
Although not a strict democracy, we ensure that everyone is capable of having a say, and the more active members are rewarded for being so.
The Republic also possesses it's own Bank (http://z10.invisionfree.com/Republic_Forum/index.php?showtopic=1198), which members can participate in.
We maintain a map (http://z10.invisionfree.com/Republic_Forum/index.php?showtopic=1350) of the Republic, so all members know where they are. Any new members are automatically added to the map on request, as part of joining the Republic.
We are also mapping out individual systems (http://z10.invisionfree.com/Republic_Forum/index.php?showtopic=1453) for Republic members. This way, everyone knows the precise layout of everyone else's systems, and it's far easier to RP.
We have in-Republic military (http://z10.invisionfree.com/Republic_Forum/index.php?showtopic=1433) and political (http://z10.invisionfree.com/Republic_Forum/index.php?showtopic=1450) RPs, and the basis of playing in the Republic is a character one - you're expected to be more interested in playing with characters than mobilizing huge fleets.
We have a grand library (http://z10.invisionfree.com/Republic_Forum/index.php?showforum=35), in which histories and legends of the Republic are posted, and which new members are more than welcome to participate in.
We are presently in a state of war (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=53919), however, have an extreme military advantage in this war.
Also, note that, while national militaries are technically disbanded, a good portion of them remain in your nation as "defensive fleets", and "defensive legions", and, considering the number of fleets and legions, (a Fleet being 500 capital ships, and a Legion being 60,000 men), it is certain you will have characters in command of Legions and Fleets when you join.
Joining the Republic: To join the Republic, you need to do really only two things. The first is to register on our forums. The second is to request to join. Generally speaking, the Censor, a specialized Senatorial position, will investigate your nation, and will assign you a mission to complete. This might involve opening diplomatic contact with another nation, designing a new ship for the Republic's navies, or perhaps sending a representative to an affair on the Republic's forums. The mission will not be unachievable, (gaining a specific treaty or outcome with a nation), but rather designed to test that you are willing to be active within the Republic.
Generally speaking, upon completion of a mission, the character who played the most prominent part in that mission should become a Senator. After the completion of this, you gain automatic representatives within the People's Assembly and Junior Senate (The Junior Senate is the non-voting part of the Senate. Junior Senators can speak, but not vote.), and will be able to vote in all elections.
Note that population size does not matter in the Republic - all members are awarded a say based on their activity and dedication.
At present, you have the right to secede from the Republic should you no longer wish to be a part of it, so the decision is a reversible one. I believe, though, if you take the plunge, you will find the Republic to be an active, healthy, and fun community to be a part of.
