OOC: I am roleplaying in my capacity as my Republic puppet, Loriiea in this thread.
IC: The United Terran Federation. Long it had been in contact with the Republic. From time to time, the occasional friendly missive between a more democratic, relaxed Consul, and a Terran President was passed along, and, from time to time, they had even discussed such eventualities as an alliance.
However, both were systems subject to change, and both often shifted allegiances and friendships due to elections. This, perhaps, was what had kept them from such a situation. Perhaps it was the Republic's invasion of Dratheria - that, too, could have damaged relations.
Germanicus, the previous Consul, had left mounds of paperwork relating to such a treaty, yet he had never enacted something like this. The former Consul had always seen diplomacy and war as wholly seperate, and, whilst he was a good general, and a good politician, he sometimes found it hard to mesh the two.
Callis was a born politician. Whilst he was not the cleverest of generals, he understood the need for alliances to grow and prosper. Many Consuls took a closeminded view, believing that either a nation should join the Republic, or forever forfeit any hope of friendship. This, however, discounted the long-standing relationship between the Republic and Korgarein, a relationship that had profited both greatly.
Although now he was desperately trying to weave together an impenetrable defense for the Republic's core worlds, as the Dratherians began a series of raids that could well sink his Consulship, he knew that something more was required. If this war was lost, despite Germanicus's idiocy in starting it, he would be blamed. The Praetors would be called in. Perhaps he would be impeached, and thrown out of office. The risk was immense.
He threw papers from his desk, in anger. No, no. No, damnit! The generalship of such a defense defeated him. It was best, he thought, to let the strategic planning to others. Provided he defended provincial capitals adequately, and managed to inflict enough pain on the Dratherians and Dunerians to please the public, he would be more than fine.
He sighed. Since when had he been such a populist? He remember, before he was a Senator, having some ideals. But one did not get to the lofty rank of Consul without making some concessions.
A sheet of paper caught his eye.
"The Union?"
Yes! Despite Germanicus's inability to complete an alliance with the Union, they had shown themselves to be more than willing to ally with the Republic. Perhaps not be fully incorporated, but an alliance nonetheless.
Within seconds, he had a hololine open to Khaberi Missanian, one of his most powerful followers.
"Khaberi, you are going to need to leave the Senate briefly."
She was loyal, far more loyal than any of the other Loriiean Senators.
"Why?"
The only question she asked, he smiled. If ever a woman deserved a position in government, it was Khaberi. She could always be trusted to obey him, despite the fact she was a sceptic about almost everything else. But that bonds between him and her went back over hundreds of years..
He smiled at her. "You, my dear, are going to negotiate an alliance with the United Terran Federation."
She only nodded.
Within minutes, her ship blinked away from Taledon, escorted by two very prominent heavy cruisers. It was wartime, and every precaution had to be taken.
Yet, the trip was safe. Within a few days, she was landing on a Terran landing-pad, a party from the Federation rushing out to greet her..
