I know the NationStates world is huge, but there are so *boom* many *boom* nukes being exploded at every turn *boom* that there has to be consquences to the whole world. Especially due to the fact I don't think the atompshere is going to grow bigger, and it might still be rather fragile that the atompshere get wipped out. Maybe the winter be a bit minor, maybe a little global cooling, but maybe, at the very least, something. It just sounds like a good thing to RP through...

Besides, by introducing a consquence for blindly using nukes, maybe it might encourage nations to stop using them.

OOC: Because reading any scientific jounrals regarding nuclear war published from about the early 1980s on will tell you nuclear winter is a joke.

A lot of people do RP the real consequences to nukes though. Those being the radioactive dust, the poisoned areas, and the fact that the wind moves that all around. Talk to V10, he RPs a nation after a horrible nuclear holocaust.

How do you reduce your nation's population, or economy, due to war, disease, or natural disasters?

You rp it..you can't actually change the statistics...although for economy you could pick issues that hurt the economy...as for population numbers you just have to make those yourself..people generally don't rp the effects of nuclear blasts on NS unless it directly involves them and sometimes a neighboring nation...most people ignore the effects simply because it would ruin the game experience if every time some noob goes nuclear everyone had to suffer from it.

Nuclear winter is a ridiculous concept. A load of nuke explosions wouldn't even closely match what volcanoes and other natural effects produce annualy, not to mention the entire 4 billion year history of the planet.

That's what they call the fraction of a second between when the heat hits and when the shock hits close to the epicenter. No one has ever complained about their direct experiences with it.

Some volcanic explosions however can really **** up the world however.

Mount Tambora, Krakatoa, and Mount Pinatubo come to mind.

Oh and for those who just want to RP their own nation suffering from it, a 2006 report states that a large amount of Nuclear bombs can cause a localized Nuclear winter (But not world wide)
(Don't expect the 'sky blotted out' but your can RP mass famine and rioting from lack of food)

Technically, nuclear summer is the time after nuclear winter where UV rays bombard the planet due to a non-existent ozone layer.

That is, if you belive in nuclear winter in the first place.

If tons of these are used to defend a border or territory from a horde of enemies will constantly shelling the field for a long time (like in the cnc game) cause effects of nuclear winter?

Well...

1) The ground would be a PreeTTTY big ditch

2) The ground and local area would be heavily radiated

3) The fallout concentration....*ahyeeeeeeee*

4) Definitely not on a global scale, but the fallout might cause sunlight to be blocked for quite a while

Nah, I like my version better.

Still, thanks for the good info.
