Only the dead have seen the end of war

New Ausha

The ages were dark, as the winter sky loomed over the frozen tundra’s of New Ausha. The winter thaw, or lack thereof, was overdue for its time of late March. In the bitter cold, the Royal family in the Kingdom of Ausha had ruled for many ages. From family to family, bloodshed, fear, malice, had plagued the land. The people knew revolt was ripe in the sweet pre-spring air. Milltias gathered their muskets. Farmers took up cannons. Horses were fitted for war. For at winters start, 200,000 peasents had been massacred in a region of central New Ausha, known as Lueckering. With a strong voice of the united people, central New Ausha, all its cities, townships, and farms had refused too remain Loyal too the King, Adolf IV. A cruel man by nature, he saw this pitiful display of impudence nothing the royal army couldn’t handle. He was correct, of course, at the cost of many peasent lives. That long winter word had spread. The largest city, Mateel, was truly divided. Some 60% were loyal too Adolf, as many were wealthy and affluent, thus benefiting from the absolute monarchies favorable policies towards the upper classes. The poor class, merchants, and many in the lower ranks of the army remain in disdain. Along with the massacare harsh taxes had been imposed, mostly targeting those slightly above poverty. The Royal tax collection service, (RTCS) was free in its manner of exumption of the governments dues. Citizens were murdered or brutalized regularly.

In addition too all these grievances, the royal family was allowing Aushans too be sold into the international slavery market, abandoning the most sacred of government duties- protection of the populace.

It all began at Jedemsburg, about 65 miles south of Mateel. General Alexander Kleiner commanded a force of some 4,000 ready millitia, and 3,600 regulars. The Royal Aushan Army (RAA) had a garrison in Jedemsburg, of some 4000 men. These men were well trained, well armed, well fed, and paid bountifully- luxuries Kleiners men were in opposition to. Cannon fired blanketed the town, the resistance movement in Jedemsburg being notified in advance, moving citizens away from the army barracks at the west end of town. Some 115 cannon fired steadily for 10 minutes, confusing and slaughtering many of the standing RAA garrison. As they formed into line, the RAA was astounded at the many thousands of men who charged them, fixed bayonets ready, yelling in their native tongue of Dutch. The RAA had no choice but too fire off a quick volley, and meet the charge.

It only took some 20 minutes. The RAA unit under Field Marshall Breton was utterly destroyed. Prisoners were tied too wooden poles and shot to death. And so it began.

The Stutkeil party had been organized, and operated illegally for 25 years now, Their sole platform of existence was too eliminate the king, and all he had established. They had called too arms some 160,000 traitors of the RAA, and 380,000 militiamen. They were ready.

Following the attack on Jedemsburg, an astounding 7 field armies were raised, each tasked with re-taking strategic points in the nation. Mateel was besieged for several days, before the resistance movement in the city overthrew the loyalist mayor, and slit the town gates watch’s throats as night began. The exuberant crowds that met them were in great multitudes. In no time at all, the Stutkeil parties flag flew high over Scofield bay.

4 other cities fell in the following weeks, with 2 stubborn loyalist strong towns holding firm. Finally, as King Adolf took breakfast one morning at his castle, he was astounded as his Imperial guard rushed in, informing him of a gathered rabble in revolt. As he inquired too the strength of the mob, the guards were reluctant too speak. He had only too look out his window and see, 200,000 peasents, RAA tratiors, and Aushan citizens gathered, torches and muskets ready.

He was taken from his castle the following hour, and held over a cliff. Thousands jeered for his head too be cutt off. Others moved aside too take a shot at Adolf. But it was finally decided by Stutkeil party co-founder Klaus Horen, that he was simply to be left too die. A lone cliff sat on the hill. He was tied with a sturdy rope, and left too die.

Adolfs son, Adolf V was captured several days later, and sentenced too exile, along with his mother, and all immediate family. They fled to Gerausche island, south of Kennewick. The family had lived there, generation after generation, under guard for many hundreds of years…

New Ausha was established, and bloomed into a Fascist society, soon to be evolved into an affluent, democratic nation, of many millions. So today, we stand united, as New Aushans.

Gerard Wisser- Herr Frodlich’s 3rd period History

Gerard swelled with pride as he scanned over his essay. He knew this had too save him from the ominous F that had loomed over his conscious for the past week. As a hard ass as Frodlich was, he could never resist a Historic battle, let alone an actual Aushan one. Stapling the papers together nimbly, he brushed pass a girl near the printer, her mascara had for the most part run down her fair face. Gerard paused too ask what was wrong, only too be interrupted by the PA system.

“Alle Schüler gehen Sie bitte in geordneter Weise auf die Fußball-Bereich zu diesem Zeitpunkt.”

Gerard recognized the voice as the district’s superintendent, who only visited the academy on a bi monthly basis. Nonetheless, Gerard figured he could make a quick trip across campus and have his paper on Frodlichs desk within the next 5 minutes. He was concerned at the number of students leaving the campus however, as he dodged, ducked, and spun too avoid the crowd. He was but 5 feet from Frodlichs class, when a tall, dark eyed campus security officer grabbed his arm briskly. “To the field, come on.” He said in a typical monotone security guards voice. Gerard gave an exasperated sigh, waving the paper. “I just need to-” The guards grip grew tighter. “Proceed now.” Gerard could tell by his near gritted teeth, that this man was not to be messed with. He spun about, papers still in hand, moving towards the field.

When he got there, he was amazed at the number of Police cars. Policemen, City, District and State all moved about, pushing the students into organized groups. A harsh voice over the intercom interrupted Gerard confused train of thought.

“Achtung Studenten! Diese Akademie ist nun unter der Gerichtsbarkeit der Royal Behörden des Königreiches von Ausha. Alle Juden auf der linken Seite Zeilen, Rustovians in der Mitte, und die mit genetischen Störungen wenden Sie sich bitte an den weit nach oben. Fahren Sie mit Eile, da die Zeit knapp ist.”

Genetic disorders? Gerard wondered. He was diabetic, which ran in his family, and he was confused. He moved to a policemen, tugging lightly on his sleeve. “What do they mean by those with genetic disorder?” The policeman needed not to speak. His head jerked in the direction of the far end of the field. Gathered there were several students, a few dozen. Gerard had to move closer, as he looked upon them. Some were trembling, others were staring blankly. He looked upon a bright skinned girl, with thick glasses. He assumed she was albinistic, and spoke to her. “Whats going on?” The girl shrugged, looking nervously about.

Shouts and hollers, as the policemen began too form into lines. Gerard was forced into a line, which seemingly healthy students were moving. He could hear a lieutenant speak to the genetically disabled group.

“Genetische misfits! Sie sind hiermit, von der Bestellung von unseren alten und heiligsten Gesetze, die den Tod, als Ihr Wesen ist beschädigt durch die Störung und Krankheit. Sie sind der Verachtung unseres Volkes, und nur mit Ihrer Abreise können wir reinigen unsere Rasse!”

Gerard was horrified, as assualt rifle shots erupted from the scene. Sevral dozen of the students fell, some still moaning in agony , as blood thickened the field. The jewish and Rustovians, were led off in the opposite direction.

And so it had begun, the Kingdom of Ausha was on the return.

Vorspiel.

"Governor. Great to see you could make it, the phone's been off the hook day and night, with those Human Rights Society folks calling in. Tea?"

"Thanks," the Governor says, as he eases himself into a swivel chair. "Human Rights Society? Sounds familiar. Aren't they the people who devote their lives to finding third world countries nobody would ever care about otherwise, and publicising the situations in international journals?"

"That's them exactly," Kathy Miller agrees. "Milk, sugar?" She pours into the little Japanese porcelain cups.

"Neither, please." O'Brien accepts his cup, sips deeply, and returns it to the table. "So what hellhole have they uncovered now?"

"They've published an article in The International Journal of Human Rights about New Ausha. They'd previously classified it as a 'non-democratic regime' and assigned it a low score in terms of civil freedoms, although it's apparently undergone several changes in domestic policy since then," Miller says.

"New Ausha? The same one? Hm." O'Brien pauses. "They're rather close by, aren't they?"

"Comparatively speaking, yes," Miller says. "A ways from Continentia, but within two weeks' sail. At any rate, IJHR has published interviews with refugees from the area. They claim that the Aushan government is committing genocide, and suggest -- in standard IJHR language" (they both smile) "-- that nations of the world come together and remove the Aushan government from power, preferably through force."

"For a journal dedicated to human rights, IJHR has a peculiar predilection for encouraging violence," O'Brien comments.

"Yes, but the problem is, it's also incredibly popular among 'goody-two-shoes' leadership. With the result that sometimes nations rush to invade with little or no proof."

"Unfortunately. So what about this genocide, who is being targeted? Why? Are people 'merely' being exiled or imprisoned, or is there internment in concentration camps, or mass killings?"

"Well, see, that depends on which article you read. IJHR's run three articles; they only agree on one point, which is that it's happening in New Ausha. The first article says that Jews, Rustovians, and 'members of several other ethnic groups' are being interned in camps and separated from society. The second article claims that Jews and people with disabilities are being executed en masse, no mention of Rustovians or other ethnic groups. The third refugee interviewed admits that she has no idea what's happening, but she saw piles of dead bodies being carted away from public spaces and other groups of people being herded into trucks."

"Hmmm. It looks like nobody has any idea what's going on over there. So why all the phone calls?"

"Well, you know how Human Rights Society is all pro-intervention and everything, right? Show me a war fought in the name of human rights, and I'll show you a HRS chapter with a huge phone bill. So they say we should boycott Aushan products, apply diplomatic pressure, mobilize the military and all that."

"Since when are we remotely involved with Aushan products? For that matter, diplomacy? We don't have an embassy there. All we have is a consulate, and it's pretty understaffed."

"You'd be surprised, actually. I was talking to Bill about this before you showed up. Bill says that, while Silanche and New Ausha have not interacted on an official level, there is significant private trade. Several Silanchean and Dzanjiru manufacturing companies interact with Aushan distributors and vice versa; the batteries in your cell phone were probably made in New Ausha, and the steering wheels in Aushan cars likely come straight from factories in Greater New Czardas."

"My batteries are Candrian." O'Brien smiled. "Anyway, if -- and that's a big if -- they're committing some kind of act of genocide, we can force them to start importing their steering wheels from, say, Van Luxemburg instead? I don't see any particular benefit to that."

"That's exactly it. On the other hand, if they really are killing off their Jews and their misfits, we can drum up regional support for an embargo. Former Sovereign League states, and Continentian states, have some of the world's more significant economies; economic embargo would easily set New Ausha into recession, maybe even depression. And we'd have enough popular support for war if it came to that."

"New Ausha is larger and, I dare say, more militaristic than we are," O'Brien reminded. "While you and Bill are definitely up there on the economic side of matters, where it comes to foreign affairs I'm still rather more experienced, and I think going to war would be foolish no matter the enemy's economic capabilities. Bear in mind that Hitler began the Second World War in a Germany rife with economic turmoil...."

"Of course. Well, war is always an option. And it's rather good for the arms manufacturing industries and our logistical contractors, of course, which can make it an attractive enterprise. That's if we win of course."

"Right. Well, first things first. We have to find out the truth of the matter."

"What are you going to do?"

"I'm going to call for a long patrol."

Ersten Akt.
Erste Szene.

Eighty thousand feet above the earth, a pair of DF-7 Super Peregrines soar lazily, almost oblivious to the fact that they are traveling almost four times the speed of sound. The sea is blue and the sky is clear; there is no haze in the air; the horizon seems to recede forever, and some dedicated pilots claim that if they go high enough they can see where the atmosphere ends. Not lies. Exaggerations.

The pilots have little to do. They keep their planes on the common flightpaths, the paths that take them towards New Ausha. On odd occasions they overtake a commercial jetliner below them, so slow in comparison that it seems to hang still in the air. The Super Peregrines are hypersonic aircrafts, the fastest yet commonly employed in the Neo-Czardian Aerospace Force; although experiments are conducted as we speak on a new prototype unmanned airplane with a top speed of Mach 11. (Most of them are dramatic failures, but that's science for you.) The pilots chatter over encrypted radio, keeping in occasional touch with the AWACS that dot Czardian flightpaths; all around the world, floating platforms or satellites host communications relays that allow data and messages to be transmitted from any networked fighter back to the supreme command centre with the unassuming title of Fort Nankini.

And now, here, ahead of them: the curving image of land. They descend and slow rapidly; now at 70,000 feet, they are rapidly losing speed, as anything traveling at Mach 4 tends to be a massive radar target. Afterburners shut down and they enter supercruise, still traveling faster than the speed of sound but quietly enough that radar will not see all too much out of the ordinary. Airplanes, perhaps, but not particularly remarkable ones. The sophisticated reconnaissance equipment, hitherto concealed, prepares to extend itself; cameras are kept in reserve, ready to snap high-resolution photos of the newspaper your chief spy is reading while he shadows the terrorist suspect, while radio and telephone communications are recorded and automatically streamed (via multiple satellites and AWACS) in the general direction of Fort Nankini for processing and analysis.

The Peregrines have yet to encounter another aircraft at this height and velocity; that is either because New Ausha is not yet on a war footing, or due to sheer luck.

*Official Reaction of the State of New Ausha*

As you may know, the Kingdom of Ausha is seeking too re-instate itself as the dominate force in New Ausha. Reports of genocide, are not entirely unfounded, as well as other unspeakable barabrities against law-abiding Aushans.

But let us assure the world, the The State of New Ausha is not engagin in any such acts. Our goal is too protect the populace, and restore our state too its former glory.

As for the Royalists, who are gaining support, we can confirm nor deny thier involvments in genocidal activities.

*End*

Across south eastern New Ausha, Royalists burned synagogues, a return too thier long past tradtions of racism and prejuduce. The "genetic inferiors" were the most hated amoung the Royalists, as thier age old tradtions of clean bloodlines and pure Aushans had yet too die. hospitals and medical centers across South eastern New Ausha are being raided for these arbitrarily targeted groups, and systematically murdered.

2 Aushan Field marshalls have offically betrayed the state, and declared the king to be the rightful ruler to the country.

In response, all loyalist home guard units are hereby activated in defence of the State. ALl loyal standing field Armies are summoned up, as well as all foreign forces withdrawn.

Statistics:

Soldiers supporting the Royalists: 367,000

Notable officials supporting Royalists: 2 Field marshalls, 3 Admirals, 3 generals

Percent of population supporting royalists: 11%

Supporters of the state (soldiers): 4,700,000

percent of population in support of the state (New Ausha): 68%

"Data is in, Governor."

"Hm. So what do our birdies say?"

"Well, according to intercepted communications, the nation is in turmoil. Apparently the Human Rights Society's acts of genocide are being committed by a group totally unrelated to the government -- royalists who want to reinstate a king."

"New Ausha used to have a king?" Governor O'Brien is nonplussed.

"It's a long story. Anyway, three major things. First, radio analysis picked up lots and lots of encrypted communications -- nothing we could decode without a few million years of spare time, but that kind of encryption is commonly used by military units, meaning that some kind of warfare is either being coordinated across the nation, or about to be coordinated. Second, to back this up, we have camera shots of lots of movement from sites the CBI's labeled as potential military bases; there are buses and trains going where buses and trains don't usually go, indicating mobilisations of soldiers, and that sort of thing." General Daniel Arachinovsky is getting into his element now. War, in modern times, is all about computers.

"Third, camera shots show an above average number of fires... tanks and the like moving around... buildings getting shot up. It doesn't look like a full-scale civil war yet, most of the country is untouched, but it doesn't look much like isolated terrorist attacks either. I'd call it an insurgency, and it's isolated now, but I can't say it'll still be isolated by the time we get ourselves together. If we want to stabilise the country, the time to act is now."

Governor-for-Life O'Brien sips almost demurely from a glass of some clear liquid. "And, of course, we do want to stabilise the country. Very well, I'll issue a statement of support. As for you, General...."

"We already have" -- Arachinovsky consults a document -- "the Eighteenth Aerospace, Seventh Volunteer, and Nineteenth Mobile Brigade on standby thanks to the rotational schedule."

"... Thank you. Prep them for transport to New Ausha, and find out who's next due on rotation; have them mobilize as well for transport to the border bases. We don't want to end up undefended."

"Right. Will do."

Official Communication from the Silanche Provincial Authority

To Whom it may concern;

We have learned of your difficulties with rogue royalist and rebel elements within the nation, as well as apparent acts of violence and ethnic cleansing committed by these elements. In the interests of furthering relations, as well as Silanche's longstanding commitment to order and liberty -- against which these rebels fight -- we have mobilized several divisions of our military for rapid deployment to New Ausha upon your acceptance. If desired, you will be compensated for use of airfields and military barracks you open to Czardian soldiers. If you do not desire or need our assistance, or already have the situation under control, we send our best-wishes and wish you luck in restoring the rule of law.
