History
Driven by Barbarians to the coast, the founders of Duomari were once much further inland and part of a much larger state, one that had all but collapsed by 1200 due to corruption and barbarian invasion.
The people of Duomari for largely responsible for the former. Embezzling large amounts of money, Duomari built up its wealth to a respectable level before it had even been founded.
Thus, in 1213, a band of nobles founded Duomari upon a archipelago within the Duomarian Lagoon, and the republic with it. Building a large city upon the islands with the money gained from corruption, they soon formed a basis upon which the Republic would live on. Trade.
Duomari was one of the foremost Nautical nations of Medieval Kamlialah, engaging in battles from the Carrion Coast to Posidon Harbour, funded by a burgeoning Luxury industry.
But come the Industrial Revolution, republican industry began to lose out to mass produced products. A depression began to occur a century ago as no one bought premium good from Duomari when cheaper alternatives were available.
Thus, the economy changed. Taking family fortunes made over generations, massive plantations were made in the hinterland, and industrialisation soon followed. Duomari became a strange merging of a Romantic Renaissance city and a Industrial Heartland. The Lagoon coast became lined with dockyards and Factory alike as Duomari found its main niche in the world economy - food canning, among other things, such as shipbuilding.
Today, Duomari still exists as a nautical power, with a slightly respectable army to boot. But the republic is very different to what it once was, and there is still change to come for the Republic...
Government
The Government system of Duomari seems to almost routinely swap between a crowned republic and a true one, as the leader is elected by the richest and most influential people that reside inside the city itself.
A more accurate description of Duomari would be that it is a aristocracy - a state run by a social elite of Industrialists and Noblemen. But with the concept of the trade union looming over the horizon, this may change. The largely money-making and nautical focuses of the government may change to suit the new industrial world in which it exists.
But, for now, the Doxe of Duomari rules, kept in check by the Noble Council and the Tribunal.
Military
As has been mentioned, the navy is the central focus of Duomari military strength, and has been for its entire history.
Economy
(OOC: Little to add until Kansiov adds his piece. But it'll have a good deal of industrialised canning and shipbuilding. *cough*tin*cough*iron*cough*coal*cough*)
(More to be added when I get my stats.O
