Earth: After 2012 AD (Kind of Past Tech/Post-apocalyptic Sign Up)

This Idea is about what would happen after 2012 if the Doom-Mongers are right that Civilzation is Screwed.

In 2012. War, Earthquakes, Storms and other Disasters have ended Modern Civilzation and force Humans back into a New Bronze Age, forgeting all Modern Technology.

In this Neo-Bronze Age World, Nomadic Tribes, Small Kingdoms and Great Empires are the norm in the Post 2012 world. Perhaps a Strong ruler will reclaim the lost Secerts of the world before the Apocalypse.

Sounds like a good idea, but is 2012 not a bit worryingly close in the future? :p
Also, I'm not sure technology would be wiped out to anything near that extent due to natural disasters and war so soon in the future. Perhaps, it could be a sort of archaic mixture of surviving MT and PT?

Actually, 2012 is the year the Mayan calender predicts the end of the world.

I also agree with Nova Pictavia. We could still have modern technology but human civilization would be like the Orks in W40K
Alfegos

The chief sat in his ruined dwelling, atop a patch of green in a sea of brown, black and yellow. He was a "survivor", one of the few who had lived through the cataclysmic "Age of Change". Now he was here, the head of a small group of third-born, watching over the desolate landscape.

After the 4th civil war, Alfegos had literally ripped itself apart. With terrorists seemingly everywhere, a new president ordered the destruction of Alfegos. That was what the blackened patches where: the former rainforests, turned in an instant to carbon dust by nuclear and conventional weapons.

There were only a few places left that could support life. This hill, an island of green only a few miles in size, was one of them. He knew there were people who lived up in the mountains. There were people who lived on the Los'vi islands. There were even those who lived aboard a salvaged airship, forever flying the world for supplies, making much in the way of trade.

He got up when he was a band of people snaking across the nuclear wasteland towards him. They were all carrying spears and chanting. Raiders from the mountains.

He bellowed across the camp, and brought from the ruin a large rifle he still had. He brought out a battered magazine, with 10 of his few-remaining rounds in. The rest of the rounds he had were home-made, bits of metal wedged into the brass casings atop a smoky blackpowder.

He started firing at them as they came up the hill, with the rest of the 37 people in his tribe waiting, waiting for them to come in range. When they were, they charged out from the buildings, assorted knives and spears amongst them. The battle was short, and the radiers began to flee. They left 8 of his people dead.

If only things were like they once were. Before the end of the Epoch of Civilisation.

=========================================

Cloud Marshall Ki'al sat aboard the AAS Comrade III, as he heard over the battered radio the crude homing beacon on Los'ni'vi. Behind him sat the rest of his "crew", an assortment of airforce pilots and military personnel who had managed to escape the apocalypse. They all were showing their age, many posts now held by thirdborn youngsters. In total, there were 12 people who were allowed access to the sanctuary of the fore gondola, all of who lived in it on the lower deck.

In the roof was a trapdoor. If you opened that, you would have to walk trough the unpressurised interior, amongst the gas bags, until you reached what had once been a missile bay. In its place were hundreds of boxes, cylinders and a large pressurised unit, where 52 people lived. None except the second borns had ever set foot upon the ground, and all were accustomed to the gentle sway of the airship as it cut through the sky.

However, the outside still showed it was a former battleship of the Alfegos Airleet: 4 missile pods hung on its belly; two miniguns and a laser dazzler protruded from the fore gondola; the outer envolope had massive rips and pockmarks here and there where it had suffered combat, and still had not been repaired.

Soon, it was floating downwards, pumps roaring across the airship as the cell pressure was dropped to allow it to land upon the flat airstrip on the island, still wet from the tide retreating across it. Across the island were the only few people in Alfegos who could live out their lives as they had done before: the weathermen. They had teken over the small weather station here, and being on such a small island, were thought of as harmless. Now, with hundreds of things brought to them by the airship crew, they lived a lifestyle as they would have in the age of reason.

The crates were unloaded from the hold and dropped onto the ground below through the bomb-bay doors, as the people on their side collected it, and brought them their payment: 10 cylinders of hydrogen for the fuel and the lifting gas, and 60 sq. metres of aircloth, to repair the holes across its side. Expensive material, but worth what was in those boxes.

It soon lifted up off the ground, the stored hydrogen from deflation pumped into the still-active cells to allow it ot soar off the ground. After a minute of rising, the engines cut in and forced it off towards the south of Alfegos, and the former twincity.

as for Neo-Bronze Age i don't think we lose that much Tech or the know how of using it

how much was lost would depend on where was hit.

depending on who survived, most of the world could Very rapidly recover to early industrial levels simply from general knowledge, at least on a small scale.

unfortunatly, you hit a major stumbling block with a number of factors later: the computer is one of those things. i don't just mean a mechanical [or electrical] calculating machine, but actual electronics. also high energy chemistry [or at least, modern chemistry, if that's not the right name] would take a while.. materials science and all that.

the loss of infrastructure would leave large parts of the world without certain resources, and that would have a Significant effect. things like cars would be rapidly lost without readily available fuel, or at least, lost to such an extent that the manufacturies etc for them would also go down.

places like japan with too many people for what their own nation can support in such an environment would have particularly large problems, assuming they didn't lose enough citizens to counter balance that. [note that in this sort of scenario, large cities become essentially wastelands until reclaimed by the wild. not much good for anything if you can't get from one side to the other in less than half a day, after all. (ignoring the concept of rush hour traffic :P)]

that said, some things would probably be re-discovered faster than others. assuming, for example, one knows how to make black powder, rockets would not be hard to fashion, and in fact would be simpler than guns. on an amusing note, chariots are much easier to regain than functional military vehicles.... and make ideal platforms for shoulder-mounted rocket launchers, much as they did for bows and so on.

with the ideas already available, lighter than air flight can be regained with ridiculous ease... even if one is reduced to hot air balloons and hand/foot cranked propellers again for a time.

ships... would be difficult. galleys, waka, canoes, and smaller fishing craft wouldn't take long to recover if you had the knowledge base for them. even pre-industrial ships of the line would take years to build properly, even if the Capacity to build them wasn't lost. any surviving 'modern' [by which i mean ww1 and later :P] warships, possibly even Especially the older ones wich are more readily able to be converted to run on, for example, coal rather than oil, would be Extreamly valuable.... provided you could produce the amunition for them (and to be fair, if you have gunpowder and the ability to work steal at all, that's not hard, though it could well be slow). aircraft carriers would actually be a lot less so simply because the planes need fuel that is much scarcer.

and that's a whole bunch of thoughts on the subject. . . . . needless to say, i'm in, but you're going to have to be very detailed about what was and wasn't wiped out, who did and didn't survive, and so on.

exactly what i'd Be would depend on the outcome of that.

edit: before people start thinking [as almost inevitably seems to happen in PT RPs] "ooh, longbowman!" remember this: a proper longbow is actually more complex to Make than you'd think, and a longbow man [and it Has to be a man. the size of the bow and shaft, the way it is drawn, and the physical structure of the female human body make it impossible for a woman to actually use a longbow without... major surgery... *shudders*] takes literally years, possibly decades [if only 2] to train to the point of usefulness. lesser bows take less time, of course.

same deal with western European Knights, actually. and possibly lots of other similar things i don't know about.

The Idea of the "Neo-Bronze Age" is that what would happen if Modern Civilzation Colaspsed down to Bronze Age style. The Causes would be Wars, Weather Changes, Earth Changes and Plagues unlike any the world had seen.

I severely doubt a "weather change" would send us hurtling back to the bronze-age by 2012. At most, a Waterworld style mixture of old and new, and even that wouldn't come about for several generations.
