EMERGENCY NEWS REPORT:

REBELS SEIZE POWER OVERTHROWING DEMOCRATIC GOVERNMENT.

Just minutes ago, a revolutionary rebel organisation established the "Disputed Territories Of Colstream." The capital has been established at Hetuarie which is the only undamaged large city. A "Soviet" has been set up and has withdrawn Colstream from the Sapphire Alliance and the ADAN Alliance. There has been heavy resistance but the rebels hold the whole eastern portion of the country and has some remnants of the Colstream Army in the Eastern Bases.

The Emperor stared at the Minister of Foreign Affairs. "Are you sure, Marius?"
The Minister nodded. "I am, my lord. Ashland has been destroyed. Colstream, as a country, do no longer exist. My lord, we must act".
Slowly, Dieter shook his head in disbelief. "Do we know how this happened?"
"Negative, my lord. We only know it was some kind of nuclear device".
"Styx. What can we do?
"We must intervene, my lord. The country is falling into chaos. Colstream is a major trading partner. We have to get the situation under control".
The Emperor looked at the Minister of Defence, who was looking at a large monitor showing one map of Zaheran and one of Colstream. "Lucifer?"
The minister pointed to the map of Zaheran. "We can dispatch one of the Legions. We can get units from the 1st Legion moving within 12 hours. If we act quickly, they can be in Colstream within 24 hours". He pointed to the Colstream map. "They will establish a bridgehead, the best would be a port, which we will use to ship in reinforcements and equipment".
Dieter nodded. "Take contact with Vollmer. Get things moving. Marius, try to establish contact with what is left of the Colstream government and military".

Michael Vollmer, the general in charge of the 1st Storm Legion, woke up as the telephone rang. "Vollmer".
He listened to the voice on the other line.
"Yes, minister. Will do, minister".
He dialed a number. "Shalitz, get the troops moving. We are going to Colstream".
In the barracks, alarm bells began to ring. The soldiers rushed up from their beds, swearing and cursing, dressed quickly and assembled at the courtyard. The general walked out. "Listen carefully. Anarchy has broken out in Colstream. We are going there to help them clear up their mess. The 1st to 5th centurias will be leaving in two hours. They will be transported to Nakon-Hír, where ships are awaiting. When they arrive in Colstream, the mission is to establish a bridgehead for our forces. The others will follow soon. Full combat gear. That was all. Get moving".

"Damn!" yelled assistant secretary for Foreign Affairs, David Straw. "The Scandinavians are closing off Colstream." Straw slammed the thick, acco-clipped brief on his desk. He picked up his telephone, which was answered by his secretary.

"Helen, call Pete Thornhill at the intelligence directorate and have him come over here. Tell him it's urgent, he'll understand."

One hour later Thornhill was shown into Straw's office.

"Sit down, Pete," said Straw, as a way of greeting.

Thornhill plopped down into one of the brown leather chairs that Straw kept around the coffee table in his office.

"Pete, the Scandinavians have shut off Colstream to all military forces, and I want men on the ground. No direct action or anything, just some of our boys in there so we can have eyes and ears in country. Any ideas?"

Thornhill leaned forward, resting his chin on his hands, his eyes focused intently on the map behind Straw's desk. Then the leaned back and slapped his hands with his knees and, with a smile, declared, "Diplomatic immunity!"

Straw raised his eyebrow, "You mean send the team as diplomats? To who?"

"Colstream. We were just about to open up our embassy when the bomb hit. The team had been accredited and cleared with the Colstream authorities, with letters acknowledging their status. All we need to do is send a team from Intelligence Directorate under the guise of this mission."

Straw stood up, walked around his desk, and extended his hand to Thornhill.

"Excellent plan. If the president agrees, which I'm sure that he will, you'll need to be at the airport by eight o'clock. Now, go pack your bags, ambassador."

"Thank you, sir," said Thornhill, shaking Straw's hand, "I'll do my best."

As Thornhill left the room, Straw muttered to himself, "Nothing else would do, Thornhill, nothing else would do."

Thornhill sat uncomfortably in the belly of the C-130 cargo aircraft. He held his new hard-backed diplomat's passport in his right hand, and was nervously knocking it against the knuckles of his left.

"You nervous, Pete?" the man next to him yelled. The C-130 was noisy.

"Nope, Rodge. I just can't sleep."

"Look at Barry and Joshua. They've been out since we took off."

Rodger Kaapman was right. Two of the team members, Barry Andrews and Joshua Nkoma, former Special Air Service troopers, hadn't moved the entire flight. After takeoff, they had ignored the loadmaster's instructions to remain seated, and had unrolled their air mattresses on the floor of the cargo bay. After taking a sedative pill each, both men had quickly fallen asleep, heads resting on their kit bags.

It was going to be a long flight.

Two hours later, the navigator came back and asked Thornhill to come to the cockpit, there was a problem and Thornhill was needed on the radio. He sat down in the navigator's seat and put on the bulky headset, catching a man with a Germanic-sounding accent in mid-sentence.

"...or turn back at once. Alpha-Sierra-Hotel Control over."

The pilot turned and gestured to Thornhill to begin talking, which he did.

"Alpha-Sierra-Hotel control, we are a flight carrying accredited diplomats from the Republic of Transatlas to the Republic of Colstream. We demand that you allow this flight to land, over."

"Tango-Delta-Foxtrot Zero Six Five, this is Alpha-Sierra-Hotel Control. We have received orders to allow you to land on runway zero-niner. Please be advised that the landing will be manual, we cannot guide you in via ALS. Once you are on the ground you will be met by military forces. Only accredited diplomats will be allowed to depart the aircraft. You will then depart immediately, over."

The pilot gave Thornhill a thumbs up. Thornhill took off the headset, handed it to the navigator, and made his way back to his seat. As soon as he sat down, the aircraft made a steep banking maneuver, sending Andrews and Nkoma comically rolling into the side of the aircraft and into each other. They both grabbed their pads and sat down quickly as the aircraft descended towards the ruined city below.

After a bumpy landing, which made Thornhill worry that the Land Rover, which had shared the cargo bay with them for the entire flight, would loose its moorings, the aircraft came to a quick stop. There was a period, possibly a minute, possibly ten seconds, of uncomfortable, nerve-wracking silence. Then the aircraft groaned and the rear cargo ramp was lowered. The four ersatz diplomats stood facing the darkness of a runway lit only by road flares and distress strobes. At the foot of the ramp were a dozen well armed Scandinavian military police. Their commander, a captain, spoke first.

"Your passports and credentials, please."

Each of the four men handed the captain a small, hard-bound green diplomatic passport and a folded piece of stationary. After reading each passport and letter, one at a time, he handed them all to Thornhill.

"Are we free to go?" Thornhill asked.

"You are. But first we must inspect your bags."

'You can't do that," said Thornhill, indignant "We're diplomats, you've seen the papers."

"Please, Mr. Thornhill. You and I both know that your diplomatic status is a courtesy to your country."

"Then at least do me the courtesy of not searching my bags, Goddamnit!"

"Mr. Thornhill, for a diplomat you are not very diplomatic. However, I will not search your bags, on the condition that you allow my men to search your car. If you do not consent, the vehicle must stay on the aircraft."

Thornhill was relieved. Their bags contained some very undiplomatic items, such as submachine guns, radio scanners, and military communications equipment. The car had nothing but gas in it.

"Be my guest, Captain," said Thornhill, smiling. "Sargent, cut loose the Rover."

"You guys might want to move back," he added to the soldiers, who were standing right in front of the loading ramp.

The sergant unhooked the C-130's cargo straps from the Land Rover, released its hand brake, and gave it a push, yelling "Lookout!"

The vehicle slid down the ramp and rolled for a few meters until two of the MP's stopped it. They spent ten minutes inspecting every rivet and weld of the car, even going so far as to bring out a mirror on a stick to look underneath it. Finally, they were done. The captain turned to Thornhill and spoke.

"Mr. Thornhill, please follow our truck to the airport exit. The tower will instruct your plane. Good evening."

With this the captain turned and jogged to a truck sitting on the side of the runway. Thornhill took the wheel of the Land Rover and started it. The engine idled for five minutes until the MP truck took off towards the gate. Thornhill put the car in gear and followed.

"Well, we're here," said Rodger, "But where do we go?"

"My lord, the Scandinvans have declared Colstream a protectorate. They are dispatching three hundred thousand soldiers. According to the "decree" they will try to stop any "non-allied" forces".
The Emperor sighted. "Contact the Scandinvans and try to work out some agreement. Lucifer, how is the operation going?"
The Minister of Defence smiled. "Very well, my lord. We will be there before the Scandinvans. 5 centurias have already left. The others will follow soon".
"Good. Prepare Totenkopf too, in case our Scandinvan friends want to count us as "non-allied". And tell Hotho to dispatch Wolfpack. We have got us some communist rebels to eliminate".

The streets of Nakon-Hír echoed with the sound of soldiers marching. The rain was falling on the thousands of legionaries heading for the harbor. Any citizens awake heard the ancient song of the Legions being sung by thousands of young men. Nos es Tempestas miles militis. In purpura nomen nos pugna quod nos intereo. Nos teneo haud vereor. Nos es suus miles militis , fatum morior.

In the harbor, the transport ships were waiting, rocking in the storm.

A slow throbbing filled the air above the abandoned country. Either side of a 1000m long Erika-class airship came two consul-class airships. They were here to keep the peace, or what was left. If lucky, they might grab a bit of land... but for now, they contented themselves with dispatching some helicopters onto the ground, each one filled with 16 paratroopers, who would take a wide area of land for the airship to land. Seeing as not much land was that big, they had to make do with the remains of an airport.

Met with machinegun fire from a few of the buildings, the reply was quick: a missile from the airship destroying the buidling the enemy was in.

The airship landed, and the opened cargo hold revealed the prefabbed components for 120 houses, as well as hundreds of supply crates and armoured emplacements. Homes away from home for the 1st and second batallions of the 11th mechanised infantry

The airport was soon secured, and the buildings quickly erected as the transport aircraft desposited the infantry and their vehicles. The perimeter fence was quickly repaired and re-enforced, and the airport buildings stripped out of useful equipment except for the control tower and fuel/repair depot.

Next day, the troops would retake the land of Colstream in the vicinity, and set up a city in which the Alfegos settlers could live.

In the comfortable office of Richard Hotho, director for IAS, the Zaheranian intelligence service, the members of Wolfpack were listening to the mission briefing. Six they were, the finest assassins in Zaheran. They made Hotho slightly nervous, with their cold eyes and emotionless faces. He continued the briefing. "You will be transported to Colstream territory. Brutus and Adler, your mission is to establish contact with the Alfegian forces we have receiced rapports on. Cassius and Wolf will seek out and eliminate rebel leaders. Engel and Machine, you will keep the Scandinvanian forces under surveillance. Understood?"
All the men nodded.
"Good. Your transport leaves in two hours. Get moving".

Dawn broke, and with it came massed explosions as the 1st batallion began taking objectives around the airfield: 25 platoons in total had begun taking the area around the airfield. First the main roads were secured, followed by massive explosions as missiles flew from the airship and into their roofs, demolishing large areas. The civilians living there were quickly evacuated as the soldiers began to let off heavy volleys of fire. At the head of each section was a corperal or sergeant in a marked helmet, letting off fire from their AF-07s while yelling at the different fire teams to take each point.

The few casualties were evacuated by armoured ambulance as the buildings were taken. Once they had completed taking an area 600 metres from the airfield, with the civilians resting in temporary accomadation, the construction trucks moved in, clearing the piles of rubble from the demolished buildings, and putting up concrete barriers and thick amounts of barbed wire, leaving only 4 roads for acess, each guarded by a platoon.

The civilians evacuated were taken back to their houses, or put into a prefabbed building in the airfield "town", next to the pile of crates from the airship that had departed, to pick up more supplies and prefabs.

Once done, a count was taken of all the citizens, with all their information stored in a mainframe computer on the back of one of the two command trucks. A count of all the empty houses taken, the soldiers began to allocate the property to the 160 Alfegos settlers who were an hour from arriving by plane, who would turn this damaged area into an enclave of Alfegos, until Colstream could be re-established.

The familes who had lost their homes were refunded in money with still a value, the Alfegan Aureus, and left to move into their allocated buldings on the edge of the barracks for 2400 men, most living in the "modified" airport building, the checkin desks ripped out in place for field beds, the shop concourses replaced with the armoury and a large garage, the security centre used as a command hub and the canteen extended into the nearby offices. Outside, 4 generators hummed as they fed off of the massive tanks of hydrogen nearby, giving power back to the entire town.

All in all, a typical Alfegos scavenger colony, that once it had enough land would be named, and the citizens living in the area allowed to either become duel citizens of Alfegos and Colstream, keeping their homes, or being allowed to leave.

The rest of the small town with the airfield would wait until it attacked the Alfegos positions or until everything within had been consolidated. Once that had happend

The first Zaheranian transport convoy was entering Colstream waters. Admiral Hans von Greer watched the coast on the horizon. Five battleships were guarding the transport ships, along with 20 corvettes, 12 destroyers, 15 frigates and 8 submarines.

Coming in over Colstream territory was a lone C-130 Hercules, carrying 30 men. The 24 Silver Eagles nerviously watched the Wolfpack assassins. The signal to jump finally came. 30 men tumbled out of the plane and activated the the parachutes. When they landed they headed of against their respective directions.

The rest of the night since the team's arrival had gone smoothly enough. Nkoma had taken watch until about three o'clock, then switched out with Andrews. It was now about six, and Andrews went to wake the others. Once the three were up, rubbing their eyes and popping their backs into place after sleeping on the floor of a convenience store, Andrews took the small folding Esbit stove from his kit bag, unfolded its top into two metal sides, placed one of the fuel tablets in the center, and lit it. He was just about to place his canteen cup of water on the stove when something slammed into the building, sending plaster and “SALE!” signs falling all over the team and knocking them over. As Andrews stood up again, the building shook once more, and a copper pipe fell broken out of the ceiling, spraying water over the “Feminine Hygiene” products.

“Andrews!” Thornhill barked, “Put that Goddamned stove out, somebody's having a bad morning!”

“Some dumb Swede didn't get his coffee,” yelled Andrews as he grabbed the cup of water from the stove, brought it level with the counter, and knocked the burning solid fuel tablet into the cup, which splashed and sizzled.

“Andrews, I wouldn't drink coffee either if it meant that some dumb SOB would try to shove a mortar round up my ass. Now let's get the hell out of here!”

“No problem!” retorted Andrews as he haphazardly threw his bag over his shoulder, folded his mattress under his arm, and followed Nkoma out the back door, cup and Esbit stove still in his hand. As they stepped out to the pharmacy's loading dock, another round hit the building, sending bricks tumbling into a side street.

“Who the hell did that” Nkoma said angrily, more of a statement of disgust than a serious question. But Thornhill took it as the latter.

“I don't know. Let's get back to the airport. Have any of you guys ever driven in –“

Thornhill was cut short as they rounded the corner to the front of the drugstore that driving would be irrelevant – their Land Rover had been completely destroyed by a mortar, its rear wheels across the street from its engine.

“Never mind, then.”

As they walked up the street, they heard, then saw a vehicle coming towards them. It stopped, and a half-dozen armed men jumped out, surrounding the four, guns drawn. Thornhill and his men dropped their bags.

“What is this?” asked Thornhill, indignant about being detained by armed men once more. “We're diplomats. We have passports.”

A man in a beret, who looked to be an officer, stepped forward and grunted, “Show 'em”

Each of the men reached into their jacket and pulled out their green, hard-bound diplomatic passport, and presented it to the officer. He grunted again, this time to his men, “Search their bags,” and to Thornhill, “Hands behind your neck, all of you.”

“Mister, these men and I are diplomats. We are accredited to the Transatlasian embassy in Colstream. I demand that you release us!”

The officer seemed less interested in Thornhill's words and more interested in the submachine guns which one of the men had found in Nkoma, then Andrews', then Kaapman's, and finally Thornhill's bag. The officer turned to Thornhill, smiling.

“And tell me, Mr. Diplomat, what are you doing with machine guns?”

“That's no business of yours!” responded Thornhill, sweating. “Our diplomatic immunity -”

The officer cut him off.

“Has just been revoked. Men, cuff these so-called diplomats and take them back to the airport. The Colonel will know what to do with them.”

The plan of course was accelerated. The first batallion now hung back as the second batallion roared into the rest of the town, hunting down the small amount of resistance there (note, this airfield/town place I have landed at is inland, in the eastern area of your nation...). Within 3 hours, the boundaries of the town flew the flag of Alfegos, and razor wire adorned the perimeter of the town. Just in case an enemy agressor didn't get the picture, many crudely painted signs informed "Alfegos Territory - Trespassers will be shot".

Inside the city bounds, the rebuilding had already begun, more supplies arriving in a smaller airship being used to repair the town and replenish the shops. Meanwhile, more permanant generators had been set up in the way of 10 massive wind turbines around the perimeter of the town, on top of a hastily built earthern mound, consisting of the rubble from demolished buildings and soil from a massive ditch around the outside.

Within days, the land inside the town would be re-allocated to allow for the intended function of the town: a massive trading station. Not much problem, since a large amount of the town was abandoned.

------------------------

Flying in by Clipper-class transport were some defences for the town form the dictator's army that would arrive there within hours of him being informed: 4 batteries of AA emplacements for around the own, as well as 6 massive "Thudd" guns: howitzers with a range of over 4 miles, able to lob massive shells at enemy formations and cause havok at range.

The two military airships would prove useful for destroying anything that attacked.

Cassius took up a radio. "Alfegian forces, this is Zaheranian patrol Zero-Two-Five. We are friendlies, repeat we are friendlies. If somebody could pick us up it would be appreciated. We are currently at..."

The fleet was now near a small Colstream port, which would serve well as a bridgehead. The battleships pointed their missiles at the city while a message was broadcasted.

BROADCAST TO GENERAL AREA

"This is the Alfegos claimed town of Ge'fegos, alerting all to the safe harbour of the town. Anyone who wishes for safe haven will be allowed to enter Ge'Fegos, and will be registered as an official asylum seeker.

We inform other nationals and those who are willing to cause harm that the town is Alfegos-controlled territory, and those who approach within 5 miles will be asked to reveal themselves or be bombarded.

This is Colour sergeant Holmes, over and out"

To Afegos:
From Democratic Rebel Forces:

Some nearby formations are making their way into your new town to refit. This town will be useful for units that are resting and refitting. We have 60%of the Colstream Army's Tanks and 65% of the Colstream Army APCs. We have 100 Aircraft but we have no ordinance for them and hardly any fuel. But the Communists have been using their aircraft to start airstrikes but the 750 B52s in the Former Colstream Air Force is under our ownership as they were quickly flown to the west of the country before the fighting started. We have no fuel or ordinance for them either.

The airships continued to regard all within the area, floating high in the sky. Below in the town, an LS-V truck drove quickly through a heavily fortified gate area towards the patrol location, the large barrier closing after it and being held shut by a large block of concrete. Behind the truck, the buildings bristled with machine guns, missile launchers, assault rifles and stinger launchers, the tops of some rooves adorned with mortars and missile batteries.

Further into the town, the battery of six guns had been set up, with massive motors ready to move them on their metal tracks around to fire 350mm shells at any enemy.

To Colstream Democrat Forces:

We have sufficient fuel and munitions for the fighters, yet currently not for the bombers. Just send an encrypted transmission with the locations of the airbases, and we will deliver.

As for your forces, there should be enough space for refit. Just hail us before you enter our territory, so that we don't have any FF incidents.

From Colstream Democratic Forces:

What the plan is that the units will be rotated doing several days at the front and then coming back to rest and refit. Our forces will be constantly rotating in and out of the town. We need a base built outside the city in your defensive zone to house and repair the vehicles. We will also be using the town as a springboard for an offfensive that will clear the land between the town and the communist front line of the right wing rebels. The land in between the communists and the town is held by these people but they are few in number so they will be cleared first. We will also co-ordinate between your army and other forces to help hold the line as the commmunists are showing signs of planning an offensive to take the town.

Heavily Encripted Message:

The Airbases are all on the West Coast well away from the front line. They have power, but not any stores of ammunition or aviation fuel. The aircraft are undamaged as none have seen combat since the fighting started but the communist aircraft has attempted several times to destroy the power stations nearby to starve the airfields of power.

The four men sat on the curb, hands zip tied behind their backs. Two of the soldiers who had arrested them stood guard, guns pointed menacingly at their prisoners. Thornhill looked around, and it seemed to him that the city had started to come to life. There was the constant drone of helicopters overhead, and what sounded like heavy armor in the direction of the airport. As he looked towards the airport, he saw what seemed to be a gigantic airship hovering in the sky. He nudged Nkoma, and tilted his head in the direction of the airship. Nkoma did the same to Kaapman, who did the same to Andrews. Over the noise of the choppers and armor, and the sight of the airship, Thornhill had not noticed that a truck had pulled up in front of them. The guards grabbed the men by their bound arms, painfully lifting them to their feet. They were then shoved in the bed of the truck, followed by the same two guards who had been watching them. The taligate of the truck closed, and it began moving in the direction of the airport.

They drove through the streets of the city's outer rim, which had been relatively undamaged by the blast. Then, they began to see demolished buildings, some with bulldozers working to move away the rubble. Finally, they reached a flat segment where it was clear that there had once been buildings, but that they had been completely demolished. Finally, the reached rows of prefabricated aluminium houses, with shocked and startled men, women and children standing in front of them, watching the spectacle of destruction and rebuilding. The truck took a right turn, and made towards an enormous corregated metal hangar. The truck stopped, and the guards, after jumping off the back, pulled their prisoners out of the truck and unceremoniously to the ground. They were then picked up, and marched to the hangar.

Inside, they were brought into a small office with four folding metal chairs, and a desk with a laptop computer and another folding chair behind it. In the chair was a man wearing camouflage fate agues. The officer who had arrested them entered, saluted lazily, and spoke.

“Colonel, I found these four men in the city. They claimed to be diplomats, but they were carrying machine guns. I had them arrested.”

The colonel nodded, then faced Thornhill.

“And are you diplomats?” he asked.

Thornhill spoke, “If you'd ask Schultz here to give you our passports, you'd see that we are, and therefore protected by diplomatic immunity.”

The colonel looked at the officer. “Is this true, leutenant? Did they have papers?”

“Yes, colonel.”

“Then give them to me.”

The leutenant stuck his hand into the cargo pocket of his fatigue pants and pulled out the team's passports, along with their four, now wrinkled, letters of accreditation. He handed the bundle to the colonel, who glanced at the first letter.

“Thank you, leutenant. That will be all.”

The leutenant saluted, then turned and walked out the door. The colonel sat silently, reading the passports and letters. After five minutes, he spoke.

“Gentlemen, I must apologize for this. Although I admit that it is,” here he paused, “unusual for four men such as yourselves to come to a nation as ambassadors after it has ceased to exist, and carrying weapons, you are still protected by your status as diplomats. You are free to go.”

Thornhill had to work hard to not look pleased.

“Colonel,” he asked, “what exactly is the situation here? I mean, militarily and legally.”

“Well, Mr. Thornhill, my government is preparing the area for settlers and refugees by constructing housing and other essential buildings. The Colstream government is effectively nonexistent, and much of the military has pledged their allegiance to a council of workers' soviets, which controls the eastern portion of the country. My government, along with others, has allied itself with the loyalist forces who are battling the communists. From a legal standpoint, Mr. Thornhill, there is no law beyond these two armed factions. Until our forces arrived this morning, the city was in anarchy.”

Thornhill was puzzled. “Then who were the men who controlled the airport when we arrived last night?”

The colonel stat up in his chair, surprised. “What men?”

“They were wearing Scandinavian uniforms.”

“The Scandinavians have never been in this city. Who could they have been, do you think? Communists? An organized gang?”

“I don't know colonel. One last question. Would it be possible for our government to bring in a small military survey team to look for survivors or possible insurgents using radio direction finding. We used some of the same techniques in our own civil war, and they worked quite well. Using a single airplane, we can detect the location of a radio transmitter to within one to two hundred meters. Naturally we'll pass any actionable intelligence on to your forces.”

The colonel stood up and leaned forward on the flimsy desk, thinking. Finally, he spoke, “I'll check with my superiors, but I don't see any problem with non-combatants. I must warn you that the airport is crowded and our own military must take priority.”

“Don't worry, colonel. We'll move out of the airport as soon as we find a suitable airstrip. Thank you for your help.” Thornhill stood up and offered his hand. The colonel shook it.

“Good luck, Mr. Thornhill.”

The Zaheranian forces quickly took control over the harbor. The tall, grey-clad soldiers marshed through the city. Once again the song of battle echoed through dark and empty streets. The eerie song made the blood chill on anyone hearing it. Nos es Tempestas miles militis. In purpura nomen nos pugna quod nos intereo. Nos teneo haud vereor. Thornhill and his men walked out of the office. They found their bags sitting outside its door, and walked out of the hangar into the sunlight. Without speaking, Thornhill led the men to the old international terminal. When they entered, the found it emptied of ticket counters, benches, and all the other things one would expect in an airport terminal. Instead they saw thousands people, dirty, grimy, smelly people, refugees from the attack. The team began walking down the length of the terminal, until Thornhill stopped at a door marked “STAIRS – USE IN CASE OF FIRE.” He opened the door, and lead the team up the stairs marked “ROOF ACCESS.” After climbing the stairs they found themselves on the roof, a gravel-covered expanse overlooking the entire airport. Thornhill finally spoke.

“Okay, we need to set up a satellite link with Intelligence Directorate. Barry, you do that. The rest of us should check our bags – make sure that those goons didn't take anything. I'm going to ask ID for a Flanker Prime team.”

Flanker Prime was a top-secret program developed by the Defense Ministry's Intelligence Directorate during Transatas' civil war. The program used specially-modified Beechcraft King Air business jets to perform radio direction finding on devices as various as cell phones, wireless computers, GPS devices, and HAM radios. The Flanker Prime aircraft could also perform signal analysis and interception, eavesdropping on supposedly encrypted communications. During tests over urban areas, it was discovered that Flanker Prime aircraft could even intercept the signal from wireless computer keyboards. The aircraft were also equipped to remotely view a computer or television screen by reading the electromagnetic output from its cathode ray tube. If it had a radio, or even if it was electronic, Flanker Prime could find it, track it, and intercept it.

“Pete, I've got ID on the line,” Andrews announced.

“Okay, great.” Thornhill took the satellite phone terminal's handset. “This is Thornhill. Listen, I've got the diplomatic and military situation sorted out. There's a civil war brewing, with pro-communist forces in the east, and loyalist and foreign allies in the capitol. I'm here at the airport. Listen, I need a Flanker Prime team. Yes, I know it's expensive. Just send it. No, of course they don't suspect anything. They think we're just looking for terrs. It's a SIGINT goldmine here – nearly a half-dozen different militaries all in the same place. Ok, ok. On the west coast? Wait, we can't drive – the Rover got mortared. Yeah, it's the same runway that the Herk came in on. They'll vector 'em in. Ok. Send in a plane to fly us out west. Okay. Thanks, bye.”

Thornhill hung up the handset, and turned to explain the plan to the rest of the team.

“They're going to bring in a Flanker Prime team. Don't worry, we'll still be in charge. We're going to relocate to an airbase on the west coast – they're not as crowded. The plan is to not only hunt for terrs but to collect intel on all the comm systems of the nations who are working with the loyalists. ID is sending a plane here to take us out west. It should be here in about six hours, so we can catch up on sleep.”

The team unrolled their air mattresses and lay down to wait.

22:00 Colstream Time-2 miles east of Alfegos Settlement:

All 120 artillery pieces belonging to the Democratic Forces opened fire along the whole front. The bombardment against the Right Wing Faction was the largest so far. After 20 minutes the bombardment stopped and 344 Tanks and 20,000 soldiers began to advance on a narrow front just east of the settlement. The objective was to breach and destroy the Right Wing Guerillas and advance to the communist front line. Fighter Aircraft, made up of MK1 Vulcan Fighters and Mk5 Viper Fighter Bombers, started to dive bomb and strafe known enemy positions. The advance would stop a mile before the front line to stop any contact with the communist forces. They knew that the communists had no artillery on this sector of the front and the other artillery was being suppressed by air attacks by B52 "Hunter Packs".

The battle was going on in the distance. Time to let these old guns have a wheeze at the enemy. There were grinding noises as the machines in the gun platforms changed its angle to the specifications keyed in on a crudely-attached laptop, and the massive shells were loaded by a crane. A few seconds later...

A massive thud (hence the name), and a massive cloud of dust and smoke was raised as the massive shell roared across the sky, followed by a massive explosion in the distance. At maximum range angle, only 5.5 miles. Not much use, but at least they knew the guns still worked, after bing out of action of 10 years.

The explosions were added to by a brilliant light display as one of the airships loosed off a 40-missile volley at the enemies in the battle in the distance.

------------------------------------

The airships came within a few hours, with the prefabs. As well as more being set up for the infatry who had made themselves at home in airfield buildings, there were assorted barracks and garages, as well as plas-steel fortifications for around the camp, awaiting their guns. Enough for 1600 men and 200 vehicles.

Late that afternoon, Thornhill heard the satellite terminal emit a “chirrup,” barely audible over the loud noise of the airport. He sat up and picket up the handset to answer.

“Hello? Yes. Yes, we're here. A Transall? In fifteen minutes? Okay. On the main runway. Got it. Bye.”

Thornhill hung up the phone and powered off the satellite terminal. He then disconnected its antenna, folded it, and placed it in next to the terminal in its protective rubber case, which he then snapped shut.
“Come on, boys,” he announced, “plane's coming in fifteen minutes. Let's get down there.”

The others stood up, stretched, and rolled up their mattresses, stuffing them in their kit bags. Andrews grabbed the satellite terminal's case, and followed the others down the stairs to the terminal, then out to the tarmac.

They waited about ten minutes before a squat, tan, twin-engined transport aircraft landed. As soon as it came to a stop, Andrews recognized the TAF roundrel under the cockpit. The aircraft turned, stopped, and cut its propellers. Its cargo ramp began to lower.

“That's us,” yelled Andrews over the noise of a taxiing cargo jet, “Let's go!”

The started for the Transall in as fast a jog as could be expected with their bags over their shoulders. They reached the rear of the plane to see a smiling paratroop officer waiting at the top of the ramp. He motioned them to board the aircraft, which they did. After they had stowed their bags, the officer motioned for Thornhill to set next to him. No sooner had they taken their seats than the cargo ramp rose back into position. As soon as it locked closed, the engines throttled up and the aircraft began picking up speed for takeoff. With a roar and a shudder, it was airborne. Once they had levelled off, the officer turned to Thornhill.

“I'm Captain Anderson, and I presume that you're Mr. Thornhill, or should I say, Colonel Thornhill.”

Thornhill was surprised. “Technically I have a commission, but I've been working at ID for the past 4 years. But I'm only a captain.”

“You've been given a brevet promotion so that you can command the Task Force.”

Now Thornhill was confused,“What task force? Where?”

Anderson looked puzzled, “Task Force Modular. We're operating out of Balad air base, about fifty miles from the front. You mean nobody told you?”

“We were sent here to observe and report on the situation. You don't mean to tell me that we're making a military commitment, do you?”

Anderson smiled, “We're still doing that. However, we've also been tasked to defend the base so that allied forces can continue to use it for supplies and as a secure pivot point for operations.” He handed Thornhill a plastic-bound folder, “Here are the details.”

Thornhill took the folder and began reading. The force looked serious. It included the things one would expect to see for base defense: mobile SAM batteries, infantry support vehicles, a combat controller group, base security. But it also had items that Thornhill was familiar with from his days in the counterinsurgency units: six Nyala armored cars, five G5 howitzers, three Alouette helicopters, Su-25 ground attack aircraft, and one of the giant, mobile G6 artillery pieces, which could drop six shells on the same target at the same time and move before the first one hit the ground. The briefing also mentioned that a company from The Light Infantry, Thornhill's old unit. The size of the commitment startled him, especially when the briefing noted that the Air Force had assigned five of its eight massive Ilyushin Il-76 cargo aircraft for the initial airlift, and that the task force would have two of the planes at its disposal at all times.
Five Ilyushins, thought Thornhill, damn. It would take one of the behemoths just to transport the self-propelled G6, or either one of the Alouettes, and the report said that he could get another one if he requested it. The briefing said that deployment had began only a few hours after Thornhill and his men had arrived, and by nightfall that the force at the base would be as follows:
Company C, The Light Infantry (200 men)
Two Alouette III helicopters
Six Nyala armored cars
One G6 mobile howitzer
Five M113 APC's for base defense, three with Igla SAM launchers, two with 20mm Gatling guns
Special Detachment Alpha, Transatlasian Air Force (200 men + 3 munitions loading lifts)
Five Sukhoi Su-25 ground attack aircraft

The helicopters and ground vehicles for this force would have required flights by all five of the Ilyushins which Thornhill had been allotted. The five G5 howitzers and the remaining Alouette would arrive that night, along with munitions. The men had required five C-130's to transport them, and then there was the Transall in which they were riding. In all, the force contained fourteen aircraft (not counting the Ilyushins or the Beechcraft which Thornhill had requested), twelve vehicles, five guns, and four hundred men. And all of it would be moved within twenty four hours.

Captain Anderson stuck his head through the door of Thornhill's new office, a concerned look on his face, “Major, we've got a problem. A terr SAM clipped a Sukhoi we had out on patrol about ten klicks out. He's landed safely, but we need your permission to return fire.”

“Why?”

“Rules of engagement. Command says we can't return fire without the CO's permission,” responded Anderson, stepping inside of the room.

Thornhill stood up. “Captain, I want you to hit 'em with three airburst and two HE from the R6. Then have two Sukhois fly over and drop fran-tan on any survivors.”

“Yes sir!” responded Anderson, enthusiastically, turning to leave.

“And Captain,”

Anderson turned, “Yes, sir?”

“You don't need my permission to kill terrs. Consider this blanket authorization to respond to any attack.”

“Will do, sir.”

The great turret of the G6 turned and locked, it's great gun pointed almost straight up. Then it fired, emitting a great concussive blast. The barrel tilted down, then fired again. It did this three more times before growing silent.

Ten kilometers away and one thousand feet up the two Sukhois barreled towards the strike area, aiming themselves towards the column of white smoke. When they were close, each pilot released a pod of “fran-tan” - napalm mixed with white phosphorous, a deadly and vicious mixture. The explosion left a brilliant cloud of orange-white fire and noxious black smoke.

At the base the men in the two Alouettes spinning up on the tarmac cheered as they saw the brilliant explosions across the plain. The choppers took off towards the site of the strike, circling the site of the strike, which was nothing now but a blackened scar on the landscape, marked only with a few still burning patches of fran-tan. The choppers flared for landing, and the troops jumped off. They fanned out in a line facing away from the base and began walking, searching for the path taken by the men who attempted to down the Sukhoi. The trackers had provisions for three days in the bush, and could move up to twenty miles per day.

IC:

Heavy bombers closed in to the eastern part of Colstream. They had more precious cargo than explosives: food. The hatches started to open and slowly parachute crates were dropped down to communists´ support bases. After the bomber fleet had sweeped the whole eastern part, it turned and headed back to Burlovian airfields. The crates included flour and lots of Burlovia´s army´s soup cans, that were good when fighting in colder atmosphere. Eventually the bombers formed a chain that delivered food to communists preventing starvation.
In the meantime forces spread throughout the eastern Colstream, fortifying communist bases. Some Burlovia´s own bases were built by field engineers and part of the bombers delivered, instead of food, supplies to communist forces. Now they were ready to defend incoming attacks.

The following is an address from the President of Transatlas:

"Good evening. As you may already know, a small airborne expeditionary force has been deployed to the former Republic of Colstream to aid with clean up and stability operations following a nuclear attack and the commencement of civil war. This expeditionary force, consisting of a company from The Light Infantry and Air Force personnel, has fought bravely, neutralizing several advance patrols from the communist rebels. However, the rebels are being supplied by air from sympathetic communist forces. This is why I have decided to increase our military commitment to Colstream by ordering the deployment of fighter elements of our Air Force. This increased force will aid in the continued disruption of the communists' supply line, and lead to the eventual pacification of the region. We cannot allow the menace of international communism to overtake yet another nation. As we have seen in our own nation, the communists bring only suffering and death. Good night, and God bless."
Alfegos

The rubble from the airstrike was quickly cleared up, and the aircraft shot down removed to empty hangers. There was no living pilots in them, so that made things more simple.

The AA weapons around Ge'Fegos were visably increased, ready for another attack. The airships were also ready in case they were attacked.

-------------------------------------

"This is Captain Holmes. We wish to confirm to Scandinavian forces that Alfegos will not move from its current position, and that any attempts to enter the city will be met with force. We will remind you that we will not be afraid in accordance to doctrine 107c to use chemical weapons that have arrived in the city. These are not very nice in relevance to their effects on the human body, so think twice before trying to evict us."

After the speech over radio, a call went out:

"All forces, we are upping to readiness level red: prepare for CBR warfare, and fortify your positions as much as possible. We will not let the Scandinavian dogs take from us this bastion of freedom, to be raped by their communist leaders. No. We will give them the finger, and tell them that Alfegos stands strong."

-----------------------------------------------

The truck drove off, then a sudden messgae crackled over the radio, in Fegosian then in english.

"Get these on NOW!"

He opened a crate and threw to the soldiers in the back of the truck chemical warfare suits and gasmasks. Next to it, a cylinder fell over, revealing a Fegosian message on the back.

"Things are about to get messy. If you see any enemy troops, open one of these cylinders at them and pray. They contain Chloropircin mixed with chlorine and phosgene, so should get a good effect. And don't be too shy to help yourself to the ammo in the crates."

-------------------------------------------

Around the town, sirens went off as military personnel hurried civilians into cellars and communal shelters, ripping off the lids of boxes filled with biochemical warfare protection and handing them out. Children and babies were taken to emergancy compressed shelters inside the barrack area, where they would be safe.

Within 10 minutes, the troops were back in position, each one with equipment ready to put on at a moments notice. Once the enemy was sighted...

The lorry slowed as it reached the gate point. There was an exchange of shouts, and the massive blocks of concrete that had been put in front of the concrete minutes ago were heaved to the side by vehicles, while the truck drove through.

"You're the last lot in: no-one else is gonna come in now."

The concrete was shunted back into position where it had been blocking the entrance, and a fireteam of men hurried behind it, one of them carrying a minimi machinegun and another having on his left hand side an AAT-87 launcher. He signalled to them, and raised his thumb.

They passed quickly through the silent streets, past one or two mortars, and finally reached the centre of the base. Here, the activity was still going on. A number of troops had unloaded supplies from the now rapidly retreating cargo airship, and were busy distributing many crates to specialist troops: a CBR warfare company, ready for action, flown in quickly from Alfegos.

Now, they opened the crates as the lorry drove past, and pulled out hand grenades, mortar rounds and mortars for their use. Along with them were a couple of troops in an ammunition tractor, loading it up with shells for the big guns: most were marked with three red bands, meaning a type of nerve gas.

Soon, the lorry had pulled up by one of the buildings set up, and the people onboard were escorted quickly into the building. As they entered, there was a hiss as the door behind closed, followed behind a few seconds of silent hissing. Then, the door in front opened, and they were escorted to a chamber in the centre.

"Feel free to remove your gas masks: the air inside here is clean."

"For now, all you can do to be useful is to help hold our territory: we know nothing of their troop deployments yet, and may be forced to use WMDs to scare them off or at least lubricate negotiation. Until then, I would reccomend thatnyou either hunker down in one of the buildings, or get outside the town to counter-attack them by taking out their commanders. We have no snipers, so you two will be very useful. I will let you requisition a single section to help you. They will be awaiting outside for you. Their corperal, Hyun'soi Gil, will happily aid you. They are all armed with AF-07s, with one carrying a minime machinegun and the other an AAT-87. I think they will be useful to you, if not for transport in an IFV then as fire support.

We thank you for coming to help us, but it is like a sandcastle against the rising tide: we may have little affect against a nation that sends tens of thousands of soldiers with disregard to tactics and logistics against a few thousand here. We can have hope though. As long as those airships fly, we are safe.

Now, is there anything else I can help you with?"

The two men saluted and walked out. They saw some helicopters and walked over to what they supposed to be the helizone. The Eagles joined in without a sound, blue uniforms glittering in the sun. He yelled over to 8 of the men lounging about to the side, not wearing any protective suits.

"Get over here now, and get the Zaheran's chopper ready NOW!"

After a minute of frantic activity, the helicopter began to wake up, its rotors beating the air and raising a cloud of dust around the side. Soon, it had begun to roar as its rotors reached speed, and the ground crew scuttled away as it rose into the air.

"Good afternoon, this is your pilot Flight Sergeant Nickel. Please note that the fasten seatbelt and no smoking lights are on. For your safety, we ask all your equipment to be stowed in the underseat lockers. In case of an emergancy, which there will undoubtedly be, put your head between your legs and kiss your arse goodbye. We thank you for flying with the Alfegos Helicopter Airfleet."

-------------------------------------

An IFV, painted in a green camo-colour, screeched to a stop by the command building. A man lept out from the roof hatch, a pair of white stripes visible on his right shoulder. On his left was his regiment insignia: a sword on the backround of a flaming wasteland. Below it were five smaller badges, showing the operations he had fought in. As well as the burning tree signifying Alestra, there was a badge from Drvarska, Datium, Solenial and at the bottom, a pair of skulls cracking over a stylised split nation: Zaheran.

He carried the experience and luck of 8 years of war, and was tipped to be a colour sergeant sometime. Untill then, he was the meanest corperal in his division, with the highest section desertion rate in the home divisions. Those that stayed had become as experienced as him, many sporting fabric badges across their right sleeve boasting of rifle expertise, AT expertise, bravery and of hardship. The latter was worn by the follwing man to leave the vehicle: Junior Corperal Hin'li. He was a bearer of the purple star, given to men who had survived against the odds: in his case completing a mission after taking a near-direct hit from a shell. He had used his body to save the rest of the squad, and did not often boast about it. After 8 months leave and the expertise of the surgeons, he had been allowed to return to the squad, still mostly working. He did not have excellent vision in his right eye and suffered from ringing in his ears. He also was pockmarked with shrapnel holes and scars.

They stood waiting, waiting for the supposed elites from Zaheran. The country that could have been bulldozed by Alfegos, but was spared in the hopes of the newfound prosperity that had brought Zaheran back to the world stage in the clutches of an economic boom.

The Eagles climbed into the helicopter. All of them were experienced para-jumpers and had fought bravily in the civil war. They had experienced flights in choppers which made this one look brand-new, and so only laughted when they heard the pilots words.

Wolf and Cassius turned and walked back against the command building. On the right arm of their uniform jackets was the insignia of Wolfpack, a silver-grey wolf head. They had slung the sniper rifles casually over their shoulders. Markus grinned. He could already feal the thrill of the hunt. He had been to Colstream before, at that time to assassinate a communist leader in the then divided Colstream. Another mark added to the stylised skulls beneath the grinning wolf. He had fifteen of them now, each representing a head in his telescopic sight, a fired bullet, a body hitting the ground. He was a hunter, tracking down and killing the most dangerous game existing. At his side walked Cassius, killer of thirteen men, one of his fellow brothers. They were the most dangerous men in their country, killing without remorse.

At Central Command in Salisbury, General van Zee was conferencing with Colonel Thornhill. "Arm your five Sukhois with Exocets and prepare to strike at the ship. Does your pilot have anti-radiation missiles?"

After passing the message on to the pilot and receving a reply, Thornhill responded "He has one, sir."

"Good," the general responded, "have him continue to follow the bombers, and if your pilot is fired upon from the destroyer, instruct him to engage the SAM, and order the Sukhois to sink the destroyer. If not, turn them around."

"Yes sir."

Van Zee turned to one of his subordinates. "Deploy an AWACS bird to the Task Force. We shouldn't have to play chicken with their Navy to find out where the drops are taking place."

"Well, well. It seems we have ourselves some sharpshooters dropped upon us."

He turned to the newcomers.

"So, this is what we have attached to our squad by the Mi'captos, eh? I hope you guys are as good with those guns under effective fire as when you're up high in the buildings. I've always hated snipers, but seems you guys might be the first I have liked. I'm your corperal. I guess you guys are higher up than me in the pay scale, but I will remind you that you will take orders from me or through my junior corperal, unless I tell you two to go freestyle. Apart from that, welcome to the family!"

He banged on the back of the LY219 IFV, and a man poked out his head.

"It's gonna be a bit crowded: standing room only I'm afraid. If, of course, you don't mind going on the roof."
"Cut the cheek private! Go sit up on the roof with the other poor soul. And if I hear one word of arguement, you ain't coming back in!
Now, can I offer you two a seat? I'll be up front with the driver, and Junior will be in charge. The rest of you, if I have to come back there...."

He walked inside, past the men sitting on the seats, and through a gap into the co-driver's seat. One of the men came behind him, and clambered into the turret controls.

In the cabin, while the men behind got seated and exchanged welcome, he looked at a small picture of his two sons tucked into a gap by the flatscreen computer.
"I hope those goddam snipers can shoot. Well, lets go."

A cloud of dust eminated from behind the IFV as its engine propelled it rapidly thorugh the silent streets towards a gate still ebing fortified.

--------------------------------------

The helicopter changed tone as it roared up into the sky and soared off, leaving the town quickly behind it. Above the deafening roar of the rotors, the pilot yelled back to them:
"I could use a door gunner! Someone get on that minigun!"

"Captain says you guys 'd better get ready: we're doing a little bit of patrollin' out here. So, I hope you two won't mind walking if we have to. You also won't mind carrying a bit of kit the guy with the AAT-87 has: one of you grab the laser designator, the other of you two grab a couple of missiles. You with the missiles can also be kind enough to carry a bit of extra ammo for the boys. Of course, if that won't impede your assassin qualities."

The Gripen's pilot saw the three SAM's launch on his radar, and vectored his aircraft towards them. He fired its lone HARM towards the group of three SAM's. The HARM was designed to home in on the radiation emitted by the radar of a SAM. The HARM and the first SAM quickly reached each other, and the HARM detonated, destroying one of the three SAM's. The Gripen then ejected its external fuel stores, and turned to climb away from the SAM's. He then activated his electronic countermeasures, but to no avail. The remaining two missiles closed in on the aircraft. Before impact, the pilot ejected, parachuting to safety.

The Sukhois were 150km from the warship that had launched the SAM. Upon hearing the news of the shootdown, the pilot ordered his pilots to engage the warship. Flying low over the water, each Sukhoi fired its two Exocets and turned for home. The missiles flew on, following the same low attack profile as the Sukhois. The destroyer deployed chaff and accelerated away from the missile, causing the loss of two missiles. Three were shredded by the destroyer's CIWS, but the remaining five stuck the destroyer's stern, bridge, and midships, sinking it.

"Why not the Canberra?" queried van Zee.

"Sir, the Sukhoi is faster and it can carry an EW and RDF pods in addition to the camera."

"Good, Thornhill, good. After you get my pilot back you and your team need to get ready to leave."

Thornhill was shocked. "Sir, we're close to locating the drop zones for the Communists. You can't let one setback -"

Van Zee cut him off. "This thing is above your pay grade. Central doesn't want a light colonel running a war."

"Sir, I'm just an intelligence officer. I have no objection to you replacing me with someone who has more experience in this kind of thing."

There was a pause, and then van Zee spoke. "I'll give you five days. If you do find something without getting another bird shot down, I'll send someone to take over operational command."

'Thank you, sir." responded Thornhill.

A total of 300 Somonov destroyers entered Colstream waters, scanning the sea and the coast for any hostiles. 20 of them escorted the aircraft carrier, which launched light bombers towards Transatlas bases to destroy them. Some destroyers launched cruise missiles on coastal forces. A total of 5 Fallout submarines cruised deep under the destroyers, each carrying 20 low-yield tactical nukes.

A nuclear bomb was accidentally detonated destroying Ashland.
The Scandinavian Alliance took Colstream as a protectorate.
Then Communists after a few years trying took control.
The Communists voided every alliance the Democratic government had set up.
Several nations came to help but the country turned inwards.
Foreign nations are fighting each other as well as helping the Colstream people.
Battles have started but they are at the moment at Trench Warfare with neither side managing a breakthrough.

To Burlovia:
From Communist Rebels:

We are at the moment in stalemate. But the airfield question is yes. We need more artilley shells. We are down to our last 1000. Fighters are also needed as the Democratic forces have air superiority over us and we have suffered lots of casualties through air attacks.

To all Nations helping us:

Don't you realise that you are aiding a group that controls less the 3/4s of the country, a group that is bent on the capture of the rest of the country for the benefit of a totalarian rule. Democracy is best in the long term. Just because the communists have received more supplies overall due to being in a small area does not mean they are best in the long term.

This is really our final warning. Stand down or change allegance. We do not wish for either of us to be enemies, but you force our hand.

Expect supplies immenantly. We will provide you with medical supplies and ammunition by airdrop, and will provide you with a nice little "bonus".

-------------------------------------

The AAS Star roared to life, its engines soon accelerating the Consul-class AirCruiser towards the battle front between commies and democrats. With the transport helicopters flying off out of its internal bay, it went into attack mode.

Once within 6 miles of the enemy front line, missiles started streaking out of the hold, each one exploding deafeningly as it hit its target. More streamed after it, the Crossbow missiles with a single heavy warhead obliterating enemy armour and artillery, while the Longbow missiles showered the enmy trenches with tens of thousands of grenade-sized bomblets, either exploding and destroying the enemy nearby or spraying the area with burning white phosphorous.

"This is Air Captain Aure - now might be a good time to attack!"

As the airship passed over the friendly line, hundreds of boxes began to shower out from the airship, the ones containing food and medical supplies deploying parachutes while the ammunition ones safely cratered as they landed, the ammunition undisturbed.

"Grab your pitchforks! The battle is about to be won!"

Within a minute it was in range of the enemy front line with the twin miniguns in the gondola. While the infared cameras gave the gunners an enhanced-reality view of the enemy positions, it was up to them to decide which points had mass enemy gatherings. The guns began firing at slow fire rate, little pricks of tracer leaving purple streaks.

"Get yourselves moving now! We can only pin them down for so long!"

A Rocket Flare fliess up into the air signalling and SOs Call for Artillery support. The call was answered immediately. Shells came crashing down onto the Communist Attack killing and wounding many soldiers. Democratic Fighters appeared over the horizon and drenched the attacking infantry in High Explosive and Incendiary Bombs. That and the shells stopped the attack dead in its tracks.

2 hours later:

The Democratic forces counterattacked smashing the much depleted division opposite them and capturing the front line trench and communications trenches behind it.

30 minutes later:

The Communists tried a desperate attack to drive them back but the forces had reinforced the new front line trenches with machine guns and flamethrowers which slaughtered the attacking forces and forcing the survivors back to their own front line under heavy fire.

TO: Government of Burlovia
FROM: Office of the President of Transatlas

Due to missteps and mis-judgements made by members of the TDF's Central Command, the military situation in Colstream, as it concerns our two nations, has reached a point which my office did not desire or anticipate. The command of a major overseas task force was left under the command of a Lieutenant Colonel who did not have the necessary experience or authority to make decisions which have severely altered the relations between our two nations. Also, certain members of the general staff have authorized military actions which, regardless of justification, have been interpreted by your nation as acts of war. Therefore, my office has ordered the commander of Task Force Modular to immediately stand down. He has been instructed to do this by parking the task force's aircraft on the tarmac of Balad Air Base, TF Modular's headquarters. He has also been instructed to move all anti-aircraft weapons inside of the base's hangars so that they cannot be used. We invite your aircraft to overfly the base to confirm what I have told you. TF Modular will begin withdrawal in twenty-four hours. I invite you to send observers to confirm this as well. Although my government continues to oppose the Communist forces in Colstream, and strongly opposes your or any nation's support for them, we are not willing, at this time, to go to war over this.

Meanwhile 20 miles behind the Communist Front Line, a defensive line was being built running from the North Coast to the South Coast to stop the Democratic Forces in their tracks. Consisting of bunkers 50 Feet built into the ground and Concrete Pillboxes that were reinforced from air attack and from all shells but the powerful siege artillery shells. Also there was 4 layers of barbed wire that were 20 metres apart and the spaces in the wire filled with Proximity Mines that were filled with 1kg of high explosive. The garrision of the positions was around 2 million men made up of the best trained soldiers as the lesser trained soldiers manned the front line ahead. There was also an airfield behind that held Fighters to protect the positions from attack from the air.

Time for the fun.
As the communist forces battled to retake the now resupplied Democrats, the airship drifted over. It still had a few hundred tonnes of munitions that would find themselves adequately equipped to destroying the enemy airforce for once and for all, as well as pummeling any defences and airfield to oblivion.

The crew were ready for this. It would require the msot delicate co-operation, the captain working in time with the gunners, the missile bay officer and the countermeasure controller, the most important man. Used carefully, he could stop an entire AA batallion from doing even moderate damage. Using the ECM, the flare and decoys, and the sheer size of the airship, the countermeasure controller could divert most missiles away from the ship, to hit harmless parts. He also had his trump card for removing the threat of missiles for good... that was the odd weapon poking from the back of the gondola, for use possibly later.

Once in range, the missiles were targeted upon the airfields and launched, while other missiles were launched upon the construction sites for defenses.

The Barrage stopped. The MS1 Panther MBTs started to advance. The Infantry started to leave their trenches and advanced with the Tanks towards the front line. Detachments of Infantry armed with Flamethrowers started to move towards the machine gun nests behind the Tanks, burning them out one by one to allow the Infantry some respite from the heavy fire. The armour was making a move for the open ground, where the armour will be able to move freely and the Infantry able to exploit the gaps made by the Tanks.

"Inbound Exocet! Show them some of your tricks mate!"

The computer sent out signals to the inbound planes and to the patriot batteries, moving its position on Radar miles away from its current position, as well as making it move around madly in fake elecotrnic senses. Meanwhile, just in case there was a problem with this, the laser mounted on the gondola rotated around to face the inbound missile. There was a hum as it took energy from the engines, and then a hiss as the invisible beam was projected at the missile, either blinding it or making it randomly change course.

Finally, the enemy fighters were targeted. On the underside of the airship were three missile pods, each containing upwards of 25 Nimbus missiles. With the targets showing up nicely on RADAR, they began to fire, aiming to destroy the enemy airforce.

Many people didn;t believe it: an airship in battle can beat many planes and ground targets.

They were still far from the battlefield, but the lead elements of Totenkopf could hear explosions in the distance. Far away, the horizon burned. The Tanks approached a strongpoint that was in flames. After that they saw just Green fields. The first untouched fields they had seen since the conflict began. The MS1 Panthers started to spread out and gain speed. Some purposefully stayed behind with the Infantry, but most of them started to pull away from the formation to take advantage of the open ground ahead of them. Some Communists surrendered but were killed by their own counter barrage. Some Democratic soldiers were killed but most managed to find cover behind the tanks. MLRS batteries were brought up and the the batteries using radar to find their targets, started to fire rockets at the enemy to stop the barrage. The Infantry continued through the barrage without stopping. They knew that medical units were there with the soldiers to help wounded and collect any dead. There was also around 80 aircraft in the air searching for any Communist targets that were not camouflaged or protected. The enemy had managed to entrench themselves on a hill and were proving impossible to remove. They had to bring up a155mm Mechanised Artillery piece, lower the gun to a horizontal position and fire into the hill at point blank range. The positions were quickly destroyed and the Democratic forces started to come within sight of the fortified Communist defensive line.

In the Defensive line, the Communist Soldiers started to man their defensive positions. They saw the MS1 Panther MBTs stop just out of range of their artillery. They then suddenly heard the MLRS batteries trying to destroy the machine gun nests. After a few minutes, the firing stopped. A smoke screen appeared in front of the positions.

As the Democratic Forces stopped, a smoke screen was put out to camouflage the digging of trenches. Fighters came over in waves dropping smoke bombs dispersed with high explosive bombs to fool the enemy into thinking the smoke screen was shielding an attack. Artillery was also brought up and started to shell the garrision adding to the deception.

The airship continued its attack, missiles pounding the airstrips themselves, destroying them for use by aircraft, as well as hitting the occasioanl fuel building and munitions store...

The swarm of fighters in the are had yet to fire many missiles. Only an overload of missiles against the airship would breach its defences. After that, damage might be done against the 600m long craft.

Morale had risen since people had seen the Totenkopf Motorcyle courier coming from the Democratic HQ. The news had gone through the lines like wildfire and the soldiers enjoyed their ration of rum in happier moods. The trenches had been reinforced and well camouflaged due to the fact that they were in range of heavy machine guns. No person could look over the parapet except through the observation sights that had been constructed into the side of the trench. Also enemy snipers had already claimed a soldier's life as he accidentally jumped up to get a good look at the enemy positions. The soldiers were in good spirits due to the fact that it was very quiet where they were and they could hear the fortified positions coming under air attack. HQ had ordered that the machine guns be prepared and ready to stop any counterattack like the one earlier in the day. The usual chatter was going on, with the knowledge that the Communist forces could no longer attack straight onto their position because of their own mines and wire. But the threat of a flank attack made the Democratic Headquarters edgy and making them beg for the Totemkopf units to free more units to make a reserve force to counter this threat. This was due to the fact that most units were either at the front or being rested.

A Lone Communist Sniper crept onto the observation deck. He was the only person allowed to do this because of his profession. He looked through the Nightvision Scope he had on his SL98 Sniper Rifle towards the Democratic trenches below. He picked a soldier having a cigarette break and looking straight at him. He squeezed the trigger. He could even read the words the soldier was saying. He put the crosshairs onto the mans head. He pulled the trigger. The soldier dropped down out of sight. A RPG-7 was suddenly fired. The rocket went past, narrowly missing him and impacting onto the reinforced concrete behind him. The pillbox it hit fired a burst of machine gun fire. The burst went over the part of trench the rocket was fired from. Another rocket was fired, this time entering the pillbox killing the machine gun crew. The sniper looked for the person who fired the rocket but couldn't see due to the smoke. The sniper crawled back towards the door of the observation deck. He had done enough damage for one night.

The Democratic advance had left a 30 mile bulge in the lines. At 01:00 Colstream Time the following morning a detachment of Motorized Infantry probed forwards on the left flank of the bulge. They came under heavy machine gun fire and was forced to retreat. At 02:30, 120 T-80-B MBTs appeared through the smoke. Supported by Infantry, the T-80-B MBTs broke through and charged to straighten the lines. Another armoured thrust on the right flank by 112 T-90 MBTs and 32 T-72 MBTs smashed a unit of 88 T-64 MBTs causing them to withdraw with 24 knocked out and the rest either damaged or with dead crew on board. The lines were straightened and trenches were dug. Also on the Northern Coast, an offensive using 52 K145s and 77 BMP-2s broke through, straightened the front and even tried to take a portion of the defensive line. 63 BMP-2s and 37 K145s were destroyed and 305 Democratic soldiers were killed. Communist forces lost 233 men. On the Southern Coast, an offensive carried out by 5000 Soldiers and 55 T-72 MBTs managed to straighten the Southern Flank and surrround a depleted Communist Division of 354 Soldiers wiping most of them out.

The Communists tried to counterattack on the Northern Front and was successful in driving the depleted forces 2 miles back before any trenches could be dug or any defensive positions made. The Democratic forces on this front lost the rest of their APCs and 300 more men. They managed to make a defensive stand causing heavy casualties to the adavancing Communists.

We have orders to destroy any and all rebel forces encountered. We have armoured units, which we intend to use in the Blitzkrieg principle. Our armoured units will attack a weak point in the enemy lines and hopefully break through. They will then advance into enemy territory, followed by the infantry. That way, we hope to take the enemy in the back, which might decimate their forces.

The defences and 3 barbed wire sections has been breached. We expect a counterattack to take place. Your advance will run straight into it. The Commmunist defensive line has been breached using Snipers to take out the machine gun nests and then Tanks knocking through the wire and taking the fortifications from behind. There is a big armoured force which has a rough strength of 800 Tanks of different types. We want an advance towards this new defensive line but don't try to assualt it as you will suffer heavy casualties and we don't know the strength of the garrision stationed there. We expect it to be manned by the remaining Communist Troops. This defensive line is bigger than the one we overcame and is protecting the Communist Capital, Hetuarie. The Democratic Government has been moved from the destroyed capital Ashland to the second largest city which has been renamed from Utopian City to New Ashland and designated as the new Capital.

The Communists were in chaos. Their forces had failed to stop the Democratic forces breaching the first defensive line and they were now withdrawing to the last and more defended defensive line which protected the Communist Capital, Hetuarie. There had been air raid after air raid on their retreating columns causing heavy casualties and wrecking vehicles. A counterattack was planned but it would achieve nothing. Morale had sunk to a new low as their forces began the long withdrawl into the new fortifications. The news that the armour had stopped behind made them more easy but still worried as the last reserves were now only Infantry. News of rebuilding in the West made them even more upset as the soldiers were suddenly realising that they were on the losing side.

When insurgents heard about Alfegos intervention, the first thing they feared was the 82nd Bomber Squadron. Known as the "Pyromaniacs", the planes dealt in one currency: fire. A wing of modified B-52 bombers, totalling 8 planes, roared across the ocean to the retreating communist lines. In their massive bombays, they carried a 5 ton tank of Napalm.

They soon dived down to ground bombing range, lower than normal, the onboard computer displays showing the enemy formation as broadcast from the airship observation officer. A number of options came up on the screen for them to take. The Wing Commander chose very quickly.

It was the one known as the "Ring Of Fire". The planes came over the area that the democrats were pushing forwards most, and 4 poured from their payloads as they split into 4 pairs the red-black liquid. Soon, the enemy position was surrounded by a flickering firy ring. To try and escape was to risk hideous burns. Now for the most deadly part of the tactic.

The remaining planes emptied their Napalm across the largest masses of enemy troops, soon filling the ring with huge tongues of flame. The planes flew off, leaving the smoking targets. They would land at Ge'Fegos, and reload for their next attacks: behind the communist lines themselves. Hopefully, the airship was kindly removing the enemy airforce capability for them.

We suggest that all artillery and armour are concentrated to the point where the rebels will attack. Infantry units will be placed in front of them, to make them believe that they are attacking a soft target. We let them advance a bit, then counter-attack from the rear and sides. If we can get them to crowd into the middle, it is an easy task to defeat them with artillery fire.

The bombing caused a firestorm that burned down the middle of the city. The civilian casualties were kept down due the fact that the bombing was limited to the government sector of the city.
Fighters appeared over the Communist lines attacking every tank they saw. Most vehicles were abandoned by the retreating Communists as they fled towards their lines.
Meanwhile, the reformed Colstream Navy, with also most of its original fleets started a naval bombardment of the Communist Defensive line on the Northern and Southern Coasts.

The bombers roared into attack level again: this time, they held a payload each of 20 "Firesheet" firestorm bombs and 5 "Immolator" heavy incendiary bombs. Soon over the enemy capital, they saw the flaming wreck of the governmental district, and decided a mission re-route was in order: the enemy lines. They had an ideal tactic for this situation again.

It was nicknamed "Relief Fire", and was quite useful. The aircraft split into two groups, each going for the flanks of the enemy lines. Then they began to discharge their bombs. The Immolator bombs were dropped onto enemy installations, spraying the area with white phsophourous, while the Firesheet bombs were dropped directly onto the land and defences, each showering an area about 1 miles in diameter with 1100 phosphourous bomblets, soon starting huge fires across the land.

Within 5 minutes, the ends of the communist line were burning for 10 miles along and 1 mile in. Now, with a much smaller battlefront, the democrats could advance with more ease.

OOC: This seems to be a pretty big fleet, even for a nation of about 900 million. I'd estimate the total cost of your fleet (combat ships, planes + support ships) to be about 400 billion dollars, or 2/5ths of a trillion. Because you haven't given any details of support ships for your fleet, I've assumed a 3:1 ratio of support ships to combat ships. Even without that, you're still spending over 100 billion dollars on a fleet, which seems pretty big unless that's your entire navy, which I find hard to believe. You might want to re-consider the practicality of such an operation.

This isn't to say that I won't acknowledge your fleet's supremacy. After all, that's why I'm pulling my forces out.

--------------------------------------------

The wing roared across the sky, this time aiming to end the communist regime for once and for all. Each plane had its bomb bay configured in maelstrom configuration: it was filled with controlled collapsing layers, holding inside masses of 50g phosphorous pellets: almost 20 000 in each.

As they came over the last areas in communist control, they started to let them out, smothering the entire area in flames. Soon, over 80 square miles of communist land was ablaze, and ready to receive the retreating communists.

--------------------------------------------

With no enemy fire at them, the airships with supplies were allowed to arrive. 12 clipper-class airships, each with a payload of 2000 tonnes, came over the coastline. 2 of them carried a pressurised unit, with a total of 8 Decontamination sections carried. 2 carried earth-moving and construction material, while the other 8 were filled with concrete.

The areas of the capital deemed beyond repair, which was about 8km around the hypocentre, were the targets of these eight: as they came over they covered the area with the spoil. After 4 hours of work, the area of about 2km around the hypocentre was under 1m of concrete, enough to cut down the gamma radiation from the fallout to less than 10% and act as a surface for building atop the flattened landscape. At least now no more dust would contaminate the area. The airships returned to pick up more concrete.

Meanwhile, in the less damaged area of the outer suburbs, the cleanup teams had been moving about with geiger counters, and had within 4 hours had got a radiation summary and damage summary of the explosion: the physical damage had extended outwards to 40km from the epicentre, and the radiation was at unacceptable levels 35km from the epicentre. The first priority was cleaning up the radiation, then removing the bodies from the buildings. Next, they would restore the utility supply in the unaffected outskirts and in the area of least damage. Finally, they would begin the rebuilding, from the outwards in. Once done, Colstream would have a new, safe capital, while Alfegos would have a close ally and a lot of favours owed.

---------------------------------------

The renamed area of Ge'Fegos had been dropped to yellow. The civilians were back in their homes, now with refunding from the Alfegos government, working utilities from the resuscitated water filtration station, and the imported sewerage processing unit and generator complex.

They even had internet and mobile phone signals, thanks to a Fegostar uplink. They would have it free until the country was back on it's feet.

Meanwhile, a large complex had been set up 2km from the town, on the northern road. With hundreds of small and large domes, as well as a black mat stretching down the side that was the temporary airstrip for them. The place was eerily empty, awaiting the democratic forces.

Right on the edge of the protection area, signs had been set up:
'WARNING: YOU ARE ENTERING ALFEGOS TERRITORY. IDENTIFY YOURSELF OR YOU WILL BE FIRED UPON.'

In continuation of the occupation of the settling of the area, some dome-like buildings had been set up in the open spaces, amongst the mortars and the AA batteries: homes for the Alfegos settlers. Now there were 180 civilian Alfegans, all here to help make the colony one of Alfegos.

The city was all that stood in the way of the democratic forces. Time now for its capture.

It was a silent evening as the drop troops came in to take the burning city. The first wave came in, 5 transport planes carrying a company of the 1st Paratroopers in to battle. The AA defences had been taken out in the city below, meaning that they were clear to assault.

The 5 platoons, numbered 1 to 5, had been given the task of securing the military and government installations within the city. They would start in the centre, taking out the artillery and command, before moving out to take care of the city edge defenses, such as hidden batteries of artillery and AA guns.

The company commander, Lieutenant Yusuf, sat beside Colour Sergeant, the two ready for battle. Unlike the normal AF-07, the AF-07P they carried had a much higher calibre, being 6.2mm AFP rounds. As a result, they had to put up with a bit higher recoil, compensated for a greater weight and a modified stock. Underslung on each of theirs, instead of the grenade launcher, was a laser designator with a range of 200m, to pinpoint airstrike targets for the ever-present Colstream democrat planes and the AAS Star.

The light turned to amber, and they stood, the person behind each checking the parachute and backup parachute. After 8 seconds, they were ready. The light turned green.

Within 10 seconds, the sky was pockmarked with black parachutes, hardly visible in the low light. Now to hope the enemy was not ready with machine gun nests on all the rooves.

He made a quick prayer to whatever god was watching him, and fired off a volley of rounds as his colour sergeant took the rest of his section to the remains of the enemy position.

He moved in once they had overadvanced, and they took a cazam check. They were still all there, and the one guy who had been shot in the left arm was attended to by the medic.

In the distance, they heard the battle taking place with then communist forces, and picked themselves up. Only a few more enemy positions to go.

The AAS Star captain yelled down the radio link to the engineers, both of who were taking the chance of a lull in the battle to make some repairs to the side of the airship. There were 9 ragged holes along the side where enemy missiles had hit, and a section of the engine gondola riddled with cannon rounds, which had resulted in the loss of power to engine 3.

"When I went through the missile bay, we had 3 segments still closed over. We also have the flares still unfired, so..."

"I know. Lets have some fun."

"Shall we?"

"Yes."

The AAS Star could help the Colstream Democrats with an extra bit of morale. A spectacle they would not often see. A switch was thrown and a button pushed, then all the flares along the airship were detonated at once. 1ton of explosives were fired out, filling the sky with the most spectacular firework display they could ever have seen. At the same time, 27 missiles burst similtaneously from the airship, whistling down to the ground where they exploded around the city.

The paratroopers met up with the Colstream democrats, appearing from the shadows of shattered buildings.

Lieutenant Yusuf walked up to the nearest Colstream democrat who looked like he was in charge.

"Are you in charge?"

"Yes" came the reply. "I am Lieutenant Colonel Harry Mackensen. I am Commander of Colstream Military Forces in this Theatre. How may i help you?"

The airships returned after 12 hours, with more concrete. Now, with a much larger area radioactivly safe, the rebuilding could be begin. After a couple of hours, the construction vehicles had moved into the city centre. They were there to put up the prefabricated buildings, right above the hypocentre, where the radiaction dose per hour was only 0.002 REM, safe enough underneath the concrete.

On the outskirts, the buildings were being repaired professionally, by some flown in builders. Working inwards, they had to change from damaged walls to destroyed walls, as well as flatten the buildings that were in the danger area.

A heavy bunker was giving Colstream Troops a hard time. A Phosphorus Bomb was brought up and thrown into the bunker. 20 second later the bomb exploded in a white fireball making the soldiers inside jump out screaming in agony. They were now only 500 metres away from the main road and the edge of the burning government district. The flagpole near the destroyed parliament building was the prize target. There was a race between the batallions to see which one would raise the Republic Of Colstream Flag on it first and capture the Communist Flag.

The Lieutenant Colonel replied, "We would like your men to help secure the railheads nearby that will help bring reinforcements into the city more easier. How quickly can you attack?"

The Lieutenant yelled in Fegosian almost incomprehensivly down his radio set, and moments later there were explosions in the distance.

"There you go, we have two platoons attacking the railheads now. In 10 minutes, you will have control of the railways. What can the section here do?"

An IFV roared into the city, hitting the accelerator as it roared down the road, quickly overtaking the infantry as it entered the governmental district. As it did, missiles began to explode all around, a few hitting the armour without much effect. It drew up by the flag, and under the heavy gunfire the tattered flag was pulled down. Moments later, two new flags were drawn up: the democrats flag at the top, with the Alfegos flag underneath. Gunfire soon left holes in the flags, but the shooters were quickly supressed by the cannon on the IFV.

The two Zaherans were ran with to the roof of a nearby building, the rebels inside gunned down. Here, they were left.
"Get us a few kills, why don't you?"

"Alright" The Lieutenant ran off, the rest of his squad peeling off in herribone formation, moving to staggered formation as they pepperpotted down the nearby streets. Within seconds, they had let off a rounds, and continued to let off the rounds as the heavy artillery pummeled the district.

The Lieutenant Colonel had changed his mind and launched a full out assualt on the final pocket. 30 T-80B MBTs were sent forward with 2000 Soldiers with several carrying a Flamethrower. The fire was so murderous that no-one could walk, they had to crawl forwards. The flagpole on top of the Parliament building was reached by a company of Infantry. The Republic Of Colstream Flag was raised above the shattered Parliament Building at exactly 23:45 Colstream Time. The Alfegos Flag was also flying below on the other Flagpole with the Democrat Flag. The Capital was theirs. The War had ended, but there was still pockets of Communists that had to be captured.

"Move in! Lets clear out these rats!"

Two sections held back as the four of the sections approached the buildings. The engineers in each sections flicked out some mousehole charges, and stood back as the wall was blown through. The first men in the holes were from Charlie fire teams: they opened up ripping anything alive to pieces, while the rest of the sections poured in, men letting out roars from their minimi machine guns.

Within 10 minutes, buildings were captured, and the men continued to clear out the rest of the quarter.

The paratroopers soon had taken many buildings, while the others had cleared the railway stations and tracks of communists, as well as making hasty repairs to the damaged lines and sticking up warning signs.

The other platoon was busy at the damaged airstrip, clearing out the buildings and using quick patching materials to make the airstrip usable to re-enforcements.

The two men surveyed the surroundings through their scopes. Their hands rested calmly on the triggers as they waited for someone to come into view.

Legion Totenkopf´s vehicles rolled through the liberated city. Behind them marshed thousands of legionaries, moving from house to house to clear out any resistance. The legion´s engineers helped their Colstreamian collegues with the rebuilding. Ships with supplies delivered help to the people, distributed by personnel from Eizenkruz. Special clean-up personnel, having had much training in the civil war due to the Alfegians love for chemical and nuclear weapons, arrived to help with the clean-up of the nuclear wasteland the Colstream capital had become.

The corperal smashed the communist fighter around the head with his rifle, the cruch as his skull shattered showing he was dead. They left the building, 4 men behind him carrying the squad engineer, who had been shot in the chest and shoulder. His body armour had stopped the round before it entered, but had broken two of his ribs. The shoulder wound was just on the edge of the body armour. The medic worridly tried to stem the blood flow.

"Where the hell's that IFV? Don't say they've crashed it!"

"Do you guys get hunches?"

The gun fired, blasting the building to pieces. Along with it came two men with a missile launcher.

"Rely on your instinct, and you will survive. I hope I have taught you two at least one thing."

The driver hit the acclerator and the IFV began to unsteadily rumble out towards the exit of the town.

The medic yelled at the corperal as the tablet computer he linked up to began screeching.

"He's gone into fibrillation. We need to get him to medics ASAP. Do you know anywhere close by you two?!"

He began pumping the man's chest vigourously. The man beside him pulled out from the medic's onboard locker a pair of pads and a capacitor bank.

"Stand back!"

OOC: What's the situation at the moment? Who's winning?

The scene at the Aximstride naval base was - althogether impressive.
Trucks and jeeps where whizzing through, carrying all manner of things.

The huge transports were embarking the 1st, 3rd, and 25th Armoured Marine Divisions, who were still arriving.

Another GPL Jeep (http://www.forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=13228816&postcount=109) slowed to a halt at the checkpoint. It was a special Jeep, containing the Admiral Kellar Johnathan-Paul, the commander of the naval contingent being sent to Colstream.

The Jeep cleared the seven-man sentry detail and sped on, past the transports, past two submarines, and stopped at the forward boarding ramp of the Battleship S.F.F. Delaroy.

There had been a change in plan - there would know be only two armoured and two air wings going to Colstream. The others were required elsewhere. To make up for it, the naval part had been upped to 3 fleets plus some more submarines. (OOC: Watched U-571 and installed a sub game - so suddenly I like submarines)

The admiral left the Jeep and climbed aboard his flagship.

The Delaroy would be heading the force, along with nuclear sub S.F.F. (Ship of the Federal Forces) Underwater-Vessel-94, or U-94 for short. The marines would be first on shore at [insert place where I'll land here - Colstream, need answer for this], followed by mixed Armour and Infantry, with the Air Cav kinda...well, everywhere.

Fifteen carriers would hold the Air Wing, and the Airborne would land in Colstream only 15 mnutes after a message was sent to the Democrats telling them to expect them - just enough time to tell Everyone not to shoot them.

Due to lack of response from etiher Burlovia or Scandinavians, Alfegos was expanding its influence. Engineers, for a small fee, went to the many towns and within a day, the power was back on across most of the country, followed by sewerage and drinking water. The gas remained off for now.

As well as this, the engineers helped to rebuild flattened areas not related to the orignial nuclear blast, while 3 companies patrolled the area within 50 miles and rounded up law breakers, communists and anarchists.

____________

The nuclear wasteland was starting not to look so. Many warning signs had been erected amongst the new houses that had started to come up on the periphery, now concreted over, with a stark warning:

"DO NOT DIG - CONTAMINATED LAND"

A self-sealed system had been installed underground for the utilites, with the pipes encased in thick lead and with extra concrete around, to stop utility contamination. The houses that had sprung up were not luxurious, just basic prefabs that could house displaced peoples until the government rebuilt.

Outside the city, in a patch of forest, a massive clearing was filled with freshly turned earth, and thousands of identical marble plaques. Around the outside was a massive marble wall, with the names of all those who had been killed instantly around it.

They would leave colstream to decide the decoration.

"Sir, the Delaroy indicates we're about to enter Colstream waters. They've sent a message to them indicating so, orders?"

Captain Yohansen thought for a few short seconds.

"We're not in conflict here yet. Do the peacetime drill - "

He stopped and went over to the PA and Alarms system and reached for a lever. He sounded a siren for three long bursts, and then yelled into the PA.

"Surface! Surface! Blow tanks, bow up twenty degrees! All hands forward!"

A few seconds later, all the crew from the bow half of the submarine, excluding bow missile and torpedo, ran towards the stern, grabbing the handrails above the hatches and swinging through. At the same time, the Skipper resumed talking.

" - Surface and do what a surface ship would do. But just in case, get the fishes and the missiles ready, just in case. Also, I want the 130mm and the X Anti-Aircraft manned, and the full watch crew on the bridge"

As the FO went off to see to it, Yohansen rung the telegraph to ahead standard. He shouted:

Belay that airstrike, we'll capture those guns intact as a diversion, then land the main assault force between the two camps, followed by airdropped forces along their flanks.

The south base shall be suppressed by F-4H2 airstrikes with AEB-52s acting as overwatch and interdiction in south-west and Su-34s overseeing the whole air-operation.

(Do these guns pose a threat to the entire island?)

Meanwhile:
A group of 5 MV-22s excersise their 'self deployment' capability while undergoing airborne refueling by a sizeable fleet of KC-130s transporting a battalion of Hurtian Marines*.

Taking off a short ways behind them are over 200 large transport and bomber aircraft, composed of More KC-130 Hercules, AEB-52 Stratofortesses, C-17 Globemasters, and An-124 Condors. These carried the bulk of the troops and supplies. (9 Army brigades and 3 Marine Battalions)

Still in their hardened bunkers where over a hundred tactical suport aircraft, Su-34s and F-4H2s, being fueled, gunned up, armed, and fueled up once more as the crews went through a thourogh briefing in detail of the layout on the island so there isn't any blue on blue casaulties and in the event any of them are shot down.

A similar briefing was given to the B-52 crews over the radio, with the info filtering down to the other aircraft via their Link-16 connection.

Some of this info was also sent ahead to the the KC-130s fueling up the MV-22s, mostly regarding a more limited section of terrain, as it was expected that they would capture maps once on the island, that or would be promptly relieved by the more informed Army reinforcements.

*Org note: A Marine Brigade has 4 battalions, an Army brigade as 5.

OOC: Ant, you can't just 'cut the reactors', but I suppose that was just a figure of speech in your navy to initiate an 'auto-shutdown', rather than 'Scramming' the core.

My nation has heard of your crisis Colstream, and intends to send you military aid in the form of Firequake Bombs. They are a Crapoozan specialty, and this is the effects:

1. It can only go into invading regions because of its effects.

2. Has been dubbed the Firequake Bomb, because when it hits, it sends shockwaves into the air, that ignite the oxygen surrounding the bomb for a 8-kilometer radius, thus setting everythnig on fire. It literally vaporizes buildings within 3 kilometers of the epicentre, because the quake is so hot.

3. The heat from the explosion at the epicentre is what ignites the surrounding oxygen, thus setting everything on fire, and it ignites the oxygebn in the shockwave from the explosion, making it look like an expanding ring of fire.

4. Once the fire ring has subsided, it leaves a 16-km or 10 mile diameter of utterly destroyed material, and burining wreckage.

5. As a result, it is great for igniting over forests tghat surround heavily populated areas, or igniting the cities themselves.

I hope that they may get to you in safety and we are sending plenty of them over there. THe count is expecte to see you with 300. Do not worry, they are not nukes, and are not radioactive, even though they are superbly powerful.

[/end reply]

To Hurtful Thoughts:

Air raid target has been changed. We will bomb the small docks instead. The original plan to srike the Guns is still being considered pending your answer. The guns pose a threat to the whole island. You will be fired at by them as soon as the force hits the island. You will suffer heavy casualties before you even group any good size force together.

21:00 Colstream Time- Frisena Island. 1 Mile East of the Eastern Colstream Coast:

3 Rigid Raiders approached the coast. Colstream Marine Commandos disembarked and crept to the treeline. The Rigid Raiders slipped back to the Landing Ship holding the other Colstream Marine Commandos. One Commando looked through his SP-22 binoculars towards the secondary camp. Through the binoculars he could see a ZSU-AA Gun, several MS56 MGL Launchers and several Recoiless Rifles. "The Commando suddenly whispered into his personal radio, "Alpha01 to Hornet. Fire at Firebase Yellow." Several missiles suddenly roared into the sky. A few seconds later the missiles struck the camp blowing several tents up and sending rebel soldiers flying through the air. Several pieces of heavy equipment was blown apart. The Commandos suddenly retreated back as the Rigid Raiders returned to pick them up. They climbed back aboard and the boats sped away, engine roaring at full power. Under the sound of the rebel's confused shouting, the noise of the departure of the Colstream Marines was unheard.

"I Concur. Chief!"

"Cut speed, ahead one half"

"Aye"

Captain Yohansen walked over to the radio compartment.

NRI Some time ago:
The Su-34s and F-4H2s finished their loading and flew off towards the tankers on the main group to refuel and cruise to the LZs.

(Pretty sure fighters have a considerably faster cruising speed than transport aircraft)

The takeoffs were timed so that the tactical bombers would be on station 5 minutes (+/- 10 minutes) before the MV-22s would be deployed (M-5 minutes), whereas the main group was timed to arrive at their LZs at roughly 30 minutes after the MV-22s (M+30), the initial Marine battalion that travel with the MV-22s would deploy at M+5.

Island:
Final approach: MV-22s, M-6 minutes
The MV-22s parted ways with the KC-130s, with the Ospries going low and the Herkies going high to draw fire.

As the fleet of ospries made visual contact with land, they slowed to 60 knots and allowed 5 Marine raiders to jump early into the sea with a rubber boat, and air-launched 5 MMP-1 UCAVs (very small things that only go up to 120 knots and carry a few small explosives). And accelerated back to 100 knots in helicopter mode.

The rubber boat carried the UCAV controlers who also hapened to be the commisioned officers of the platoon, their job was to suppress the air defenses and artillery long enough for the raiders to do their job and then to provide a flanking envelopement from shore. This boat had a small outboard allowing it to travel up to 20 knots. The boat was launced 1.5 miles from shore, and would arrive at M+2 minutes.

Some of the F-4H2s had already arrived to their holding pattern 10 miles from the island. Shoud things go astray, they had permission to bomb the artillery positions and wipe the camps clean.

OOC:
Yeah, most nation governments assume intel is flawed, but it gives a few objectives at least.

Maybe I should include more detail on what the initial battalion of marines are doing.

In the meantime, I'll be trying to describe the digfferances between Marines, Marine Raiders, the Army, HOI mercs, Army Air forces (tactical and strategic), FBIA (no longer exists, simmilar to an NKVD refferance), territorial police, and the CHIA.

To Colstream:

Firequake bombs are close and ready to be picked up by your officers. We are sending them via ship, and have them heavily guarded by the Crapoozan Air Force.

We expect to see them in the Colstream war soon, and we hope to see you there. We cannot be sure as to where to fight, so we cannot send you direct military aid, but we will supply you with weapons to help with the war. We will try to find out where to strike so that we may help you with our air force. if needed, we will send in our won firequake bombs on rebel sites. PLease contact us via telegram on Nationstates, as I am not on the forums all the time.

We hope these Firequake bombs will help you in your objective. They must be handled with care however, as they can start massive wildfires. We hope to continue sending military aid. Crapoozan navy ships are delivering them, and as i mentioned before, are under heavy guard. Good luck and may we see you as an ally in battle.

"Cap'n! Radar detects aircraft, a big swarm of them, look aggressive, closing fast! Orders?"

"Ah, fuck it....man anti-aircraft! Load the CIWSes with AA if applicable, quick!"

Captain Roland, the second-highest ranking officer on the Delaroy, rushed over to a panel and sounded a siren. A lot of men were below decks, getting the cargo ready to unload at the nearing docks, so he himself went outside and sat behind a twin 30mm.

Soon, aircraft were within eye contact - it was a big swarm alright, coming from east - and west.

A nearby 130mm dual-purpose gun swung round and aimed. Missiles were armed, but the aircraft were unidentified.

It was only then that some clever spark came up with the idea of IFF sounding.

An Ensign had the results within 20 seconds.

He strolled on deck, smiling.

"That, gentlemen, is the totally unannounced Antigran Airborne. Two divisions of them. Oh, and the air cav. They're gonna para-drop in twenty minutes. And they're only telling the Colstream Government - or it's remains - about this as we speak"

Captain Roland went into the bridge. "SO, Would I be right to say that we're about 5 swedish miles from Hertuarie dockside?"

"I'll check, but I'd say Aye"

"Tell them we're approaching"

Lieutenant Tyler charged up a ladder and through a hatch, onto the exterior bridge. He was followed by a Warrant Offficer and two Seamen.

He beckoned to the gun crews - all 9 of them - to help him.

Hertuarie docks were no longer a speck in the distance, and were closing fast.

Tyler and three others began to ready the ropes and a windlass, and the inflatables were readied, to be sent out just before docking to make landfall in case there was no-one there to secure the ropes. They were armed, just in case.

The Warrant Officer yelled down a hatch:

"Estimate 50 metres and closing! Whatever you do, cut the speed or we'll hit someone!"

The sub's speed was too high and, by the looks of it, could crash them. If watar came into contact with electronics and started a fire and the reactors caught fire too, there'd be big big explosion and everyone would die.

The crew only wanted to do this to their enemies, so the captain was forced

The Rebel AA Guns spotted several Aircraft above them. They suddenly identified the aircraft as Hercules Transports and opened up with a furious barrage of fire. One Hercules took a hit but it was only a small hole in the fusilage. The damage was light enough for it to continue. The Rebels suddenly brought up a FG 112 AA Missile Battery. They loaded it and started to fire. The Hercules that survived the first hit wasn't so lucky this time. A missile struck the Right Wing and exploded one of the fuel tanks . The Hercules broke into 3 pieces and the debris fell onto the island. A F-4H2 came in at high speed and dropped its bombs onto the Missile Battery destroying it.

On the Island the Colstream forces were storming, the rebels watched as the Hurtful Thoughts aircraft flew overhead. Their AA Battery was also manned but was not firing because the aircraft was too far away.

Off the Islands coastline, a Colstream Navy Destroyer, CSD Freedom, sailed round to its firing point. The landing was taking place in 24 hours time and the ship was there to harrass the rebels on the island to delay preperation of defensive positions. CSD Freedom reached its firing position. It's 18 Inch Gun suddenly opened fire on a target only 600 metres away. The target exploded sending flame into the sky. At the smae time 24 B52s armed with 40 300lb Bombs flew over the Ship. The B52s carried on over the island and dropped their bombs. In 20 minutes, 288,000lbs of High Explosives pounded the 12 mile by 14 mile island destoying many buildings. Several AA Sites were destroyed. The B52s disappeared into the darkening sky. Large fires burned sending huge clouds of smoke into the air.

Alfegos
20-12-2007, 18:22
On mainland Colstream, duties had not been neglected. The former capital of New Ashalnd had been safely decontaminated, and rebuilt in its former glory, albeit with a slight Alfegos influence in the architecture and city plan: a massive grid system, with the central business district comprising of over 60 glimmering towers, poking 700 metres into the sky. Around them were a sprawl of small residential buildings and other such accomodations. I t was, however, a dead city: nobody lived there. Everything was undecorated, and empty. Empty shops, with row upon row of empty white shelves. Hundreds of empty houses, their rooves gleaming with photovoltaic cells that produced the cities energy, the excess being stored in a massive underground battery plant along with the massive utility processing systems, that ran empty.

They had, however, left one area unbuilt as a reminder to all: one of the empty patches in the centre of the city was a stark sight: the blackened ruins of a block of buildings, poking out above a crude layer of concrete a metre thick, with blackened forms on them showing where people had been as the heat wave hit them.

Outside the city was the memorial to all the dead. A granite tower stood 50 metres high, surrounded by a graveyard, neatly arranged, of all those whose remains had been found. Thousands upon thousands of graves, each with a neat black headstone, bearing a plaque of their name, or of their unidentified status. On the walls around the necropolis, hundreds upon thousands of names were recorded, with the names of those who had died in the blast, and those who had been killed in the ensuing conflicts.

In Ge'fegos, a deal had been proposed to Colstream: in exchange for the town and for all the land within 10 miles of the town, Alfegos would demand nothing for the entire reconstruction of the capital and for its saving of the nation from anarchy and supression of freedom.

Would it be accepted though? Alfegos had a lot riding on the area as an industrial enclave and trading outpost in Colstream.

Thank you for helping rebuild Ashland. The Capital will be returned to Ashland at Midnight Colstream Time (22:00 BST). The Colstream Government has accepted the deal and also guaranteed that your government has total control of the area and has decided to retain Ge'fegos as the town's name. It's OK, but I'll o through my thoughts of your post as I reply...
The Rebel AA Guns spotted several Aircraft above them. They suddenly identified the aircraft as Hercules Transports
Good so far...

and opened up with a furious barrage of fire. One Hercules took a hit but it was only a small hole in the fusilage. The damage was light enough for it to continue.
It's a godmod, I can overlook it though, the C-130 is pretty tough...
BTW, wasn't the C-130 too high for your Ack-ack?

And was it ZSU-57-2 or ZSU-23-4*?
*Vertical fie limit of 3 km whereas the C-130 has 10 km cieling, and MV-22 has one at ~6 km.
Now THAT is a godmod, not saying it wouldn't have hit, but I could've most likely done the crash mch better with more detail.

A F-4H2 came in at high speed and dropped its bombs onto the Missile Battery destroying it.
Only one plane?! Surely you jest. And wasn't their suppressive fire supposed to be before the C-130s came within range?

Again, another G-mod.

It would more likely be a 'fluid finger four' formation dropping cluster bombs and mines upon the enemy about a minute to 30 seconds before the C-130s came within range. Maybe even some strafing with 35 mm guns.

It's 18 Inch Gun suddenly opened fire on a target only 600 metres away. The target exploded sending flame into the sky.
This part is fine.

If those are my B-52s, you are mistankenly assuming I'd waste time loading them with dumb iron bombs with the intent to carpet bomb the island upon meting the slightest resistance.

It'll take awhile for me to figure out which Godmods to ignore, and which I can make-do simply by modifying the outcome/details.

I'll also remind you, that although I'm sending you these reinforcements, they are not yours, so please don't try handling them.

"Sir, Operational Command just sent a message. It's level 6, pretty important"

"I'll be right there. Captain, I trust you can oversee the unoading and refuelling yourself?"

"Yes, sir"

With that, the Admiral walked briskly towards the bow comms room, and opened the door.
A bustle of activity and the flicker of computer screens greeted him as he walked in. The Ensign sat down and pressed a fey buttons on a keyboard, then the message appeared.

REASSIGNED TO SOME ISLANDS OFF THE COAST. REFUEL AND RESSUPLY AND HEAD THERE WITH ANOTHER BATTLESHIP, IF POSSIBLE, AND THE 56TH FLOTILLA

Admiral Johnathan-Paul muttered under his breath.

"Oh, for piss' sake. We only just frickin' got here"

With that, he thanked the comms man and went back onto the bridge.

Most of the fleet was low on fuel, and only the first arrivees could be refuelled and resupllied quick enough. Only a few ships, subs, and transports could be redeployed quick enough - eight destroyers, the S.F.F. Merlay, Xafire, Aura II, Racala, Beldrale, Irrevey, Riveca, Aura III, three cruisers, the St. Kathen, Harresz, and Reiger, the Battleship Delaroy, a carrier, Yusevek, and the U-94, -85, and -103. A small fleet - strong, but small. And then there were a few lightly-armed marine transports and some cover from the Air Cav.

If something big happened that caught them off-guard, then they would be in trouble.

To Antigr:

OOC:Point taken about the destroyer. Next time i will Rp a gun length 0f 14 inches.

It was early morning as the landing boats crept towards the shoreline. The Colstream Air Force has completed the bombardment of the island. MK5 Viper Fighter Bombers stayed on call to assist the ground units as they landed. As the landing boats disembarked their troops, a salvo from the CSD Freedom's 14 inch Guns landed nearby. The soldiers fanned out as they advanced up the beach. Most soldiers carried AK47s or AKMs, but some carried Cobra N74s and Skorpion SMGs. Some heavily armed soldiers carried PKM machine guns or RPG-7s. The following wave was made up of Mi-26 Halo heavy lift helicopters. They carried K145 APCs and dropped them nearby. The Crews then disembarked from the helicopters. The 3rd wave which landed 30 minutes later, were Heavy Landing Ships carrying T-80 MBTs in their holds. Several left the beach after being disembarked making a dash for the nearest bridges 2 miles away. The Mechanised Infantry with their APCs, left the beach and chased after the rushing Tanks. The other Infantry, had to move on foot. The landings were to be reinforced by hopefully 1 Division of Fson Legionnaires and another 2 Divisions from the Colstream Mainland.

Wait...Are you talking about 14 inch calibre shell diameter or 14 inch calibre barrel length? Anyway, I'll fast forward this until our fleet is near the islands...more fun that way. Oh, you asked for airborne to land on the island...they already landed on the mainland, so they can't, can they? I wish your wars lasted a bit longer...I wish something would happen that no-one was expecting and there's a big war again, because in truth, a nuclear explosion would be organised by a clever, big bunch of rebels, and a clever, big bunch won't be flushed away that easily.

Antigran Landing Fleet, 56th Flotilla

08:43. Calm. The fleet sailed on in eerie silence. No-one was on open decks.
This was because, in the next 20 seconds and closing, a special order would be given. 20 seconds later. The order.

"Fire!"

The word echoed through the radios of the flotilla. The solitary 80cm railgun of the S.F.F. Delaroy whined and belched flame, shooting a blazing white-blue flame of a shell at astounding speeds across the seas towards a certain set of co-ordinates on the island. That was the signal.

The other 8 main guns on the Battleship fired a 22" (560mm) salvo across the waters and towards the same coordinates. As the shells flew, accelerating cruise missiles suddenly crashed through the surface of the sea from the depths of the position of the U-103.

Guns and missiles from other vessels would continue to crash down for 15 minutes. Then the marines would go marching in.

The Tanks moving forward had reached a minefield. The 1st Airborne Division and the 101st Assualt Division had dropped nearby and had OPs in the area. The rebel's had brought up a couple of captured 120cm Rail Guns and were firing onto the beaches. They were protected by several AA missile batteries which had the air covered. Serveral Fighter Bombers had been shot down, one which crashed into CSC Highlander mortally wounding her. She sank after 30 minutes taking 66 out of 120 sailors with her. The retaliation was the use of napalm on an area inhabited by rebel soldiers. The attack killed many rebels and set some of the forest ablaze. The second attack used 1 10,000lb bomb carried by 1 B52. That landed in a rebel occupied barracks flattening it and the trees surrounding it. The rest of the fleet had been moved away from the coast as several MIG-31 Foxhound Fighters sporting unknown camouflage and flag, approached the fleet at high speed. Several Colstream Air Force MK1 Vulture Fighters engaged them. The Dogfight that followed showed that these unknown pilots were professionials. The Engaging CAF Fighters managed to shoot 4 out of the 5 down but 1 MK1 Vulture Fighter was damaged and was forced to land on the Aircraft Carrier CAC Astria with smoke pouring out of its engine. A CAF A-10 Thunderbolt appeared immediately afterward and fired its 30mm Cannon at the remaining MIG shearing the left wing off it and the damaged aircraft slamming into the treeline of the nearby beach bursting in flames. Immediately, several Colstream Army Intelligence experts were flown to the wreckage. They managed to recover the part of the fusilage sporting the unknown flag and have it airlifted to the Colstream Mainland to be indentified. As this was happening, the spearhead reached the bridges. They had been blown prior to the tanks arrival. The tanks had to now wait for engineers to repair the bridges.

Rebel patrols are heavily armed and all landing points protected. Be careful of AA Fire. Also there are unidentified Fighters trying to shoot down unsuspecting aircraft. 22:00 Colstream Time:

Artillery Fire rained down on the rebel positions. The area under bombardment had entrenched rebel APCs and Infantry. As this was happening, a Colstream Air Force C130J Hercules appeared over the island. Several Black Clothed Bodies jumped out. They were from the Colstream Spetsnaz. They landed just a mile north of the bombardment. They moved into the trees. Meanwhile, an air strike struck a rebel camp 3 miles east of the front. A building housing a high level member of the rebels was narrowly missed but killed his bodyguards in the next building. On the beachead, several more tanks had come ashore. The beach they were landing on had been shelled earlier in the day by 120cm rail guns. Now with them silenced for the moment, work delivering troops and supplies could continue undisturbed for the moment.

At 01:00, the Colstream Army began to move. An attack on the south coast was attempted after a quick 10 minute bombardment. The attack made good progress breaking a line thinly held by weakened rebel units. They breached through the front line advancing 2 miles. They swung south and back west to cut off rebel forces in the Gentha Peninsula. Several Colstream Navy Destroyers then sailed for the area arriving at 12:00. They then proceeded to shell the area. The Colstream Army then went on the defensive but still some units deployed Infantry to probe forward and then report the enemy positions to the naval units off shore.

The twin KGM GPMGs (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=13168548&postcount=52) mounted on the frame of the side door of the helicopter opened fire, spraying .243 Antigran ammuntion into the trees and plains below, the first segments of dry land on the coast. Inside was a platoon of 25 marines. The helicopter slowed to a hover about 100 metres inland and dropped to an altitude of 25 metres, and the marines slid quickly down to the ground on ropes.
They quickly took cover and fired at [insert suitable infantry target/targets here] with their PT-3 SMG (http://www.forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=13117146&postcount=14)s and Sabre II (http://www.forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=13178681&postcount=65)s. Their machine-gunners opened fire next, having set up their MGs.

The barrage had been reduced - the 22inch guns were on a fire-when-needed basis and few shells larger than 15inch were landing on the known enemy positions. Fast hovercraft landing craft were moving towards the shore at high speed, next to an almost equal amount of water-jet-propelled amphibious marine AFVs doing 42mph. All were heavily armed and firing occasionally.

The first vehicles hit the shore, dispersing marines and some sailors.

(I take it this: 'The rebels opened fire onto the beaches. Spotters had watched the boats land and the survivors of the machine gun fire and the naval bombardment directed 4 batteries of 110mm Artillery Guns firing barrage fire using previously arranged arcs of fire. 1 7.62mm PKM firing Tracer mixed with Armour Piercing ammunition suddenly opened up sending tracer flying across the beach from a position overlooking the beach while 4 other PKMs firing normal ammunition fired from concealed positions in the edge of the trees adding their deadly fire.' is for me? I'll assume it is for now)

Suddenly, Gunfire rattled out as the marines and sailors edged forward. Insinctively, they all hit the ground and rolled behind cover.

The sailors weren't as well trained as the marines and several were sent sprawling, small red-stained holes dotted over their uniforms. One and a hlaf divisions of marines, backed up by 3500 sailors, could deal with this. A Miera II LAW operator took aim at the most exposed MG position from within a shell crater and sent 105mm Antipersonnel Warhead death towards the MG nest, creating a large explosion and giving a direct hit on the crew. By now, some sailors and marines not lucky enough to make cover had been hit in swathes.

Two Brand-spanking-new MT-85D Marauder (http://www.forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=13313625&postcount=152) MBTs opened rapid fire with twin .50 guns and 30mm automatic cannon - rather than wasting 120mm shells. Several more tanks joined in within 20 seconds.

About this time a sound like a train going past at high speed appeared, followed by several more. Shellfire. Three hit MT-85C and -85D Marauders, but were easly defeated by the NERA armouring. Even plunging indirect gunfire of this calibre was no match.

However, casualties were mounting. A sattelite had been pre-positioned over the island and began relaying images and locations of the gun batteries. This info was passed to seventeen twin 203mm gun crews and the 560mm guns of the Delaroy, which, combined, sent 42 huge shells crashing down in one salvo upon the various positions. Meanwhile, twelve SLRS (MLRS) systems had reached the beaches and launched their missiles at the known artillery positions, each missile capable of completely flattening a hectare. Each vehicle had 20 missiles. It would take a miracle for the guns to survive.

Meanwhile, the medium 15inch batteries aboard the crusiers and battleship had started raining DPICM down on the enemy armoured positions being relayed by the sattelite. They ceased after three salvos, as Cruskin CM37 dive-bombers approached, raining missile death. Then, the Marauder MBTs were dispatched, only 20 of them. They were all of the -85C and -85D revision, and APCs and old russian tanks would be no match for them. If the enemy tanks were not up-armoured since when they were built, the 30mm co-axial cannon would be able to penetrate their armour. The tanks were backed up by 23 MIFVs. Over a hundred tanks were not engaging anything and could be dispatched to aid. If ground was level all the way to the target, the Marauders would have fired from the beach - after all, with surely superior sighting equipment and the MT-85Ds - making up about half the tank force - being equipped with ETC 120mm guns, there would be nothing stopping them. Lighter gunfire in the 105 - 203mm range continued to plunge down on the enmey vehicles.

The rebels fell back taking heavy casualties. They managed to fall back onto a hill and started to fire 105mm Recoiless Rifles at the incoming Maruaders. Suddenly 4 platoons of Anti-Tank Soldiers appeared. Armed with RPG-7s they opened fire on the incoming Maruaders. Meanwhile the 25 T-54 MBTs were now arriving at the front. They had no hope in fighting but their orders were to attack the beachead and hold the main road junction which would give the Antigran Forces access the nearby airfield and fuel depot. That was in the process of being wired for demolition and the roads leading to both the fuel depot and the airfield mined with TMN-46 Anti-Tank mines and POMZ-2 Antipersonnel Mines. More airships continued to fly over the area, dropping massive blocks of building material into the empty land around the city. The city was being converted into a massive trading and industrial post, and as such was being converted to some of the most profitable heavy industries.

5 massive factories had been constructed, as well as numerous warehouses, and a massive new office district for Alfegosian companies and Colstream countries. All natives were being given the best of Alfegos supplies, and as well as having all the utilities they could ask for had been given priority for jobs at the factories.
As well as the 2700 workers at the huge airshipyard, there were thousands of jobs available in the metalworks, the plastics plant, the weapons factory, the food plant and the huge hydroponic farm complex that was supplying the colony with adequate food.
Many houses had been rebuilt, providing much more space for people in new environmentally friendly buildings, or for those who were hard up accomodation in glass-steel apartment blocks that towered 520m high.

All now that remained was to start raking in the money. The airshipyard was busy building a Clipper-class airship, a massive skeleton 150m wide and 720m long held in massive clamps along the length and lit up by pinprcks of light form the hundreds of people welding joints togther, overshadowing the fires of the metalworks nextdoor, mountains of various ores, coal and limestone heaped next to the glowing furnace that belched out clouds of filtered gas above them.

To Colstream: That should be no problem. An order for 3 Consul-class aircruisers and for 3 Ghost-class stealth airships will be completed within 2 months.

The order came in, and the skeleton that had been constructed was modified ever-so slightly: the extra support beam here and there, as well as a shorther length. With 720 people crawling over it like ants, and many more manufacturing the gondolas, missile racks and the armour for it's carapace, the first one off the line looked set to be ready within a week.
At the armament factory nearby, the order had also changed: they had now begun to make many missiles for the airships, as well as a specialist mould being flown in for the miniguns on them.
All of this fuelled by the metalworks and plastics works, a very good mix in the area.

A recoiless rifle shell thumped off the hull of an MT-85C Marauder. It did no damage whatsoever. The add-on slat and NERA armour, plus chobham and depleted uranium in thick layers saw to that.

RPGs began to detonate on the hulls - no damage. A track was blown clear off another MT-85C, which was quickly surrounded by two other tanks and a few MIFVs to allow the crew to get out of their paralyzed vehicle, while a heavily-armoured MTE-85R Armoured Engineer Recovery Vehicle drove up behind it, attached it's beam, and began to tow it away, covering itself with it's 30mm cannon and machine gun.

The tanks began to trace the flame from the RPG launches and fire at them with grenades and 30mm shells.

Incendiary-High Explosive 120mm shells were used to flush out some of the weapons teams, blowing them up and/or setting them on fire.

A Lieutenant-Colonel in command of the detachment radioed beachead for artillery support. The tanks could deal with it easily, but they had to press on to a different location. The tanks began to back off - seemingly a victory for the rebels. Then they [the rebels] found out why.

15" shells began to crash down as the tanks rolled back to avoid the blast. The shells, if they did not score a direct hit, would send out lethal fragments in every direction for hundreds of meters. That and the shells were half-incendiary. The miracles of anti-personnel shells.

The 43 vehicles, 20 of them Marauders, took a different route to the known positions of the T-54s. A commander saw them making for the beachhead.
He yelled:

"Gunner! Load HEAT! Don't bother with any fancy DU or sabot stuff, those things are weakly-armoured"

A rapid switch by the autoloader to HEAT was complete in 2.5 seconds. The gunner was left to do what he did best. He aimed and fired.
The MT-85D's 120mm ETC gun kicked. A shell went flying out of the barrel at incredibly high speed, thanks to the ETC elements, and struck an exposed T-54, (OOC: Assuming those tanks haven't had armour upgrades or NERA), and exploded in a shower of metal and crew intestines.

Miera III ATGM mounts on all vehicles were firing missiles too, and machine guns and the infantry, firing through ports and from hatches on the MIFVs, were mowing down survivors.

Fire rates for the 120mm guns was up to 12rpm. That could equal, for all the Marauders, 100rpm. With no delay in between firing to aqquire targets, thanks to the commander being able to aim the gun while the gunner was engaging. Plus missiles, the tank battle could be over in seconds.

Meanwhile, 25 more Marauders and an equal number of MIFVs were approaching the intersection. Some Marauders joined in the tank battle at long rangem while the rest of the vehicles stopped. Not wanting to take risks and learning from the recoiless rifle and RPG attacks, the area was first going to be cleared by artillery.

As the shells began to fall, some more explosions were produced by the mines being detonated. The artillery would have to be a lot more thorough clearing this place.

Meanwhile, for any mines that the artillery didn't set off, Marauders with mine-clearing attachments had been brought forward.

The snipers, however, had not yet been discovered.

OOC:The rebels do have Upgraded T-54s but those T-54s you engaged had not been as they were rushed forward.

The road behind them exploded as rebel artillery rained down high explosive to slow down the Maruaders. The remaining T-54s moved closer. One T-54 exploded as a artillery shell from his own guns hit the turret. The debris hit 2 others flipping them both over. The Driver of one ran back towards the airfield but stepped on a mine. He disappeared in a huge explosion. The explosion took out 3 other rebel crewmen and injured another. He was dragged to safety by his comrades. The others were forced to withdraw but lost 3 others as they were hit by shellfire from both sides. 5 others were disabled with crewmen escaping and running for their lives. 11 T-54s managed to escape with smoke shells being deployed to shield the retreating tanks.

Meanwhile, 8 modified T-54s with reactive armour were waiting to ambush the Maruaders. The minefield would delay them for not long and these tanks were to delay them even further while detachments of rebel engineers were sowing more mines and more positions were being prepared.

OOC: Is that artillery 110mm again?

The Antigran artillery strike had cleared some of the mines, but not all. This became very clear as another Marauder had it's tracks blown clean off.

Help was at hand. A squeaking of tank tracks became audible, growing louder over the sound of the battle.
Then seven MTE-85MP Modified Marauders appeared over the crest of a hill. Fitted on the front of them was a huge heavily-armoured mine plough, on the belly a V-shaped blast deflector and strengthened hull, and on the sides modified mine-resistant tracks and wheels.

All belched flame and smoke as their main guns fired, adding to the carnage. They rolled forward, slowly, detonating mines as they went. They were in one big side-by-side line, creating a wide path for the Marauders to follow. Meanwhile, artillery from both sides was busy detonating more mines.

Three MIFVs and one Marauder were hit and damaged severely, but the heavier-armoured Marauder continued to fire, turret survivng relatively unscathed - the shell had landed on the engine deck, going straight through - however, no ammunition or fuel was stored there, so the engine was shut down and the fire contained within the fireproof armoured bulkhead, being extinguished by the Fire-Suppression system.

The line of tanks was going forward slowly but steadily, detonating mines as they went. The artillery, however, was still a problem, one that would have to be dealt with. Again, the sattelite found and relayed their positions. To make sure no-one survived, a few cruise missiles had been readied, alongside beachead artillery, and fired.
The 18th Antigran Air Cavalry's attack helicopters were dispatched at the same time to finish them off in the highly unlikely event that they survived the missiles and the naval artillery.

The remaining T-54s had not been seen, but the tanks and MIFVs had ATGM launchers with dual-warhead missiles that would defeat ERA armour. The ERA would also fragmentate like a grenade and kill any enemy infantry in the surrounding vicinity.

OOC:Yes it was 110mm Guns which had fired on your again.

The 11 T-54s approached again. This time they were supported by 17 T-64 MBTs and 1 company of rebel soldiers. This was an attempt to drive them back towards the beachead. Suddenly several large explosions rocked the air. The rebel artillery suddenly ceased firing. In panic, the armour and infantry withdrew quickly as their support withered. Smoke grenades were dropped by the rebel infantry to give some cover against the Antigran Shells.

Meanwhile on the Colstream Front in the Central Island, the Colstream Army had forced the rebels back and had caught them in 2 pockets with no hope of escape. Rebel boats were evacuating the soldiers to avoid encirclement. One event was 1 large vessel had loaded rebels at the docks on the east coast and was leaving to reinforce the front against the Antigran Forces on the Eastern Island when 2 MK5 Viper Bombers dived from 10,000 feet and dropped a stack of 4 2000lb bombs each. All 8 bombs struck the ship punching several holes in the hull. The ship started to immediately roll over and break into 2 pieces. It sank within 3 minutes with no survivors. After 1 hour, the northern pocket had been liquidated. That freed more Colstream Divisions for the new conflict in Jingiskan. The Southeastern pocket was being defended better and with better tactics. The docks had be used to evacuate 2000 rebel soldiers so far and they were being redeployed against the Antigran Forces on the Eastern Island. The Colstream Army had 10,000 soldiers against 4000 rebels still stranded on the island. 3000 were behind the lines waiting to be evacuated and the rest at the front. One more day would be the last the rebels had before the new Colstream Offensive took the island and then the Colstream Effort would turn to help the Antigran Forces.

"Do you concur, General?"

Admiral Johnathan-Paul was addressing General Hartmann, a man with three stars on his shoulders and a marine insignia on each sleeve, the commander of the approximated two divisions of forces on the island.

"Yes. Yes, I do. However, last time this was tried, there was 150 divisions to spare rather than one and a half"

The second General in the room, Major-General Kerlingham, commander of the only full division on the island - the 35th Marine Armoured - had a concerned look in his eyes as he thought. Then he spoke.

"Yes, but we can't leave the beachead undefended"

"Then it would be a conventional assault"

"So make it one. These rebel forces are weakening, why not?"

Hartmann sighed.

"Fine. What forces are you willing to commit?"

Kerlingham rolled out a sheet of A4 paper and read from it.

"Uh, let's see, erm...we got the 452nd Marine Tank Regiment, 21st and 904th Marine Mechanized Regiments, 556th Marine Infantry, 700th Marin..."

Johnathan-Paul cut him off.

"Give me a figure, Dave"

"What figure?"

"Troop numbers. Gimme a figure"

"You want me to estimate?"

The admiral gave him a look. The general understood.

"All in all, sir, about 19500 men in my division, and then I'd say a brigade from the other regular marine division, which is about 7500 men, so..."

Hartmann spoke.

"27000 men, about 20000 of them fighting"

"Good enough" Said the admiral. "Let the assault begin. We're gonna blitz this island. We've got the last of the equipment ashore. Now, as I understand it, we have an artillery strike, naval guns of all calibres plus cruise missiles and aircraft on all rebel positions seen on the sattelite, then we move in our five armoured and mechanized regiments, straight away. Each will be, of course, backed up by their own infantry, plus the other division's brigade and an infantry regiment."

Suddenly, a naval Sub-Lieutenant ran in, yelling.

"Admiral! Admiral, sir! Sattelite and long-range air recce reports rebel ships coming in by boat from the Colstream-held island. Look like transportation vessels, carrying a lot of men"

"Take an order. Send the carrier Yusevek's air squadrons out to bomb the shit out of them. Get SSM cruise missiles, fire them at them. Dispatch the U-103 and U-94 to sink them. And get some sandwiches, chicken, preferably"

"Yes, sir. Oh, and one thing, sir. Most of the rest of the fleet at Hertuarie docks has refuelled and resupplied. They're joining us with two more divisions, five more carriers, another battleship, and lots of cruiser and destroyers"

The admiral grinned.

"Gentlemen, it seems we have yet another ace up our sleeve. Lieutenant, see that two of the carriers and the other battleship bomb the rebel ships too. No use wasting all the firepower"

"Yes, sir!"

Most of our forces are now heading there. The will pass by the island and will fire some shells to support your forces before continuing there. The only island that has rebels on it is yours.

The Colstream Army had captured the whole island and was shelling the docks. Several ships were on fire and sinking but 10,000 more rebels had made it to the Antigran held island. Around 2800 remained. The Colstream Division complement had shrunk from 25 to only 6. The Artillery Guns complement had shrunk from 500 to 100 but was making up for it by using new napalm shells which was killing rebel soldiers without respite.

On the Antigran held island, the rebels strength was 7000 soldiers, 300 tanks, 300 Artillery Pieces and 200 BMP-1 APCs.

General Kerlingham checked his watch. Coming up to five to ten in three...two..one...

"Advance! ROLL 'EM!"

He yelled. He was addressing five armoured/mechanized regiments through a radio. The advance had begun.

His MVCo armoured command vehicle began to move forward with a line of tanks and armour, as eight batteries of artillery fired, 'walking' forward, clearing the area ahead. They were shelling every inch of land. At the front eof the armoured group, engineer mine-clearing vehicles were making sure verything was clear.

Meanwhile, the other two Marine divisions were not landing at the Antigran beachead. An order had been given to take the newly-arrived fleet to the locations of the rebel landings. They were to shell the shit out of it, then land there. They would be right up the rebels' backside, with 23000 men. Some rebel ships had got through the artillery fire - probably due to reduced accuracy at maximum range - and this had been reported to command via the sattelite. The subs were to quietly sneak up to the enemy fleet, the subs moving along the seabed, and fire their ballistic missiles from underneath the hulls of the vessels. There were probably still rebels on them. Even if there weren't, the sheer sight of several large transports and other warships exploding suddenly would have an immense effect on morale. yet more cruise missiles were being aimed carefully at all known rebel positions all over the island.

It was all a risky strategy, and the new divisions of marines had nothing to fall back to if they failed. But they wouldn't, hopefully. What with 22inch guns, immense air power, cruise missiles, other missiles, a sudden rocket strike capability - they had some firepower to be reckoned with.

As this was going on, three carrier air squadrons were already on their way to smash the enemy landing areas and docks.

The Antigran Bombardment destroyed rebel ambush sites and wrecked APCs. Many rebels were blown apart by the sheer weight of ordinance landing on their positions. A huge gap 8 miles deep along the whole front was cut and the landing sites where the reinforcements were coming from was wrecked beyond repair and destroying the last of the rebel vessels coming in. The whole front was rolled up sending well organised units into total dissaray and confusion.

The air was tense - very tense. It was totally silent in the landing craft, and all around it. The only sound was Antigran artillery fire and rebel panic.

A throbbing sound started in the landing craft, followed by the other landing craft and amphibious marine vehicles. The engines.

As the marines gathered speed, more aircraft flew overhead. They fired their missiles and turned back for more, adding to the bombardment. After what seemed like hours, the marines thudded suddenly to a halt. The ramps came down.

*music from the beach charge in the film Anzio plays*

It was like March 1953 all over again - a date in Antigran history where 5 million men charged communist Antigran positions along a fifty-mile front. A solid wall of men. A traditional, all-out charge, like in WWII movies.

Sergeant-Major Koroski charged forward with his battalion, pressing the trigger on his Sabre assault rifle down hard, spraying .243 everywhere. The 28 rounds went and the clip discharged automatically, and he slammed another in and shoved the charging handle forward once more.

Gunfire was everywhere, cutting down rebels. The initial landing of only one divisiom was still a huge one.

Koroski was one of the first off the beach and up onto solid ground, followed by his battalion. A few disoriented rebels appeared, which the Sergeant-major fired his weapon at. Smoke grenades were thrown, and the marines charged, naval artillery just ahead of them, clearing a path.

The other side of the island, Antigran armoured assault

The division rolled forward fast, through the huge gash torn in the enemy lines. APCs and MIFVs and light vehicles went forward with them, fring into the displaced rebel soldiers.

It seemed that the rebels had really been taken by surprise - and the Antigran Federal Naval Marines were the ones to take advantage of it.

Vehicles surged forward, gunfire echoed over the landscapes - at this speed, the lead armour may well be across the island by tommorow.

The rebels on the beach were cut down. The rebel forces began to fold under enormous pressure. Many units were overun and had to surrender or mount suicidal counterattacks aginst the armour coming forward. The rebels was surprised and had no plan to counter the threat. The tactics were however to let the armour through, and then attack the Infantry following behind. One incident however went wrong leaving hundreds dead. Shock and awe swept the frontline.

OOC: In Antigran armour formations, infantry is almost always under armour and mixed in with tanks, not seperated. Anyway, time for a crap five-minute post.

ANTIGRAN DIPLOMATIC TRANSMISSION
The United Federal Republic of Antigr

To: The Rebel Leaders
From: The Antigran Federal Naval Marines

We'll be blunt. We are giving you an opportunity for an unconditional surrender for your forces. You have suffered immense casualties and we should think you do not wish more of them. You will be well-treated under the Geneva Convention.

We have decided to agree to your terms and surrender Non-conditionally to you and the Republic Of Colstream. The war has been a futile one and will nver be attempted again. We hope to pass into your hands without being harmed.

From: United_Deception
To: Nations helping to rebuild Colstream

We have been observing what is going on from a distance. Watching the blood shed, the violence, we will be sending in peace keepers to hope that the nation of Colstream can be kept at best. We will also be donating 2 billion Grekens to help rebuild this nation. We have a request that nations pull out at least 80% of their military forces.

(OOC: Sorry for crappy post.)

OOC2: When's the big surprise you promised us going to come? And where? Not that I'll know this ICly, of course.

OOC3: Another post later tonight.

From: The United Federal Republic of Antigr

While we wish peace, as you do, withdrawing 80% of our forces now would be impossible. We are currently in the middle of an armoured assault, a marine landing, and taking in the surrender of thousands of rebel soldiers.
We appreciate your concern, however it seems you have not looked at the situation at all.

To United Deception:

Can't have no more troops in the country. I have other nations using me as a staging post for conflicts around the world.

BOOM!!!!!! A flash of bright white light followed by a shockwave measuring 5.5 on the richter scale went from the east of the island to the west of the 10 by 20 mile island. A Tactical Nuke-A ZS33, the type that had devastated Ashland which had been recently rebuilt and repopulated, exploded sending radiation across the island. A radical group in the rebels acting independantly from the main leadership, had managed to smuggle it out of their base and commit suicide in the most spectacular and destructive way.

To Antigr:

BIG PROBLEM. A tactical nuke has gone off on your island. The 3 miles by 2 miles of the island has been vapourised. Here is the info on the device:

ZS33

Weight:12,000lbs
Yield:1 Megaton
Blast Radius: 3 by 2 miles
Radiation cloud limit: 20 square miles
Info: Uses the 1 megaton yield to create a focused explosion designed to destroy a local target or localised forces. BE CAREFUL! Exposure to it will kill a person in 1 hour if not treated. Recommendation: Set up NBC Exclusion zone and wait for 3 days for the radiation to clear.

From: NBC Warfare Specialist Wing, Colstream Army.

NOTE: Your forces may display radiation sickness if exposed to the radiation cloud. Treat using NBC medicines them refer them to a Military Hospital On the Colstream Mainland. The main military base in Ashland has been alerted to the explosion and possibility of Radiation Casualties.

OOC: I presume this is in the center of the island - classically, it would be, so I'll assume so for now. This is also better for me, since my forces are not in the center yet. This isn't just for the sake of my forces, nukes usually are in the middle of somewhere.

IC:

"Hicks! Jeffries! Get to the left. Sergeant, take three men and go - "

Lieutenant Karlson was rudely interrupted by the fact that he was lying five meters away from where he was. His platoon was also lying in the dirt.

A mushroom cloud was going up in front of them. A big one.

Karlson took a couple of minutes to get back on his feet. He yelled out.

"Ah, fucketty SHIT! Platoon, get out of here! NOW!"

The twenty-five men scrambled. Meanwhile, back at the 'command station', a small field emcampment consisting of a MASH unit, reserves, a field kitchen, and several command vehicles, a radio operator whacked his headphones down on a table and wrenched off his mouthpiece.

"General! GENERAL!"

The two Generals came running. The operator explained what he'd just heard over the radio. Kerlingham nodded slowly, and then spoke in a slightly shaky voice.

"So, we've got the bomb details. Three by two miles, did you say? Right, pull everyone five miles clear. Tell them to shut down in vehicles and activate NBC packs. Any vehicles not NBC-capable, pull out. Any units near or in the blast radius?"

The radio operator, a captain, stared at a blank wall, horrified.

"Ma...my...my...my old battalion, sir. The...the 35...355th Recon"

The Generals exchanged looks. A single word came out.

"Shit"

355th Recon Battalion, right on the edge of the blast

A flash. A thunderous sound. Blackness. A glimpse of some soldiers running around. Blackness again.

Sergeant McCarthy dragged himself out of the hatch of his APC, lying on it's side. It had saved his life. If they had been closer inside the blast...they would've vapourised. Some infantry were lying around him, in the open. Some dead. Some barely alive. The other 11 men in the APC were escaping, slowly, dazed.

They ran for their lives.

Radioactive dust entered the atmosphere. A Boeing 747-400 which was passing the island was hit by a EMP Pulse which disabled the aircraft and the the shockwave which tore it apart. The wreckage fell into the sea. A Passenger Ship 100 miles away was rocked by a huge wave caused by the shockwave. 2 men on the top deck was washed overboard but were rescued. In Ashland, the explosion was heard but people continued on their way to work.

On the Colstream held island, alarms sounded. The call to go to NBC alert came as the radioactive dust flew over the Antigran held island a mile away. NBC capable vehicles were closed and Colstream Soldiers pulled on NBC suits. Non NBC capable vehicles were evacuated to the west of the island to avoid contamination.

General Hartmann walked back into the command vehicle, holding a thermos flask full of coffee. He poured some for himself and the Staff Sergeant manning the equipment.

"Sergeant, what's the situation?"

"Nuclear, you mean?"

"Yes"

"The cloud is expanding, certainly. I've prepared some stats for you, uh...there's about 360 men, they're elements of the 355th Recon, in the immediate blast radius. They were on the edge and mostly under armour, 103 casualties, that's dead and more seriously wounded. Almost all the 360 have light injuries, bruises and stuff. They were on the very edge of the blast"

"What about non-NBC capable forces and vehicles?"

"Evacuated to the coast. Landing craft are just taking them onto the ships now"

"Any damage from the shockwave?"

"Yes, but mostly tents falling over. Some of the taller, lighter vehicles were blown over. Nothing un-repairable"

"Looks like we can only sit and wait. I understand that the NBC-capable forces five miles and further from the epicentre of the blast are still standing firm?"

"As per your orders, sir. They're not gonna make us run that easily"

"Well, Antigrans were always crazy. That's why people would rather have us as allies. Anyway, direct radiation sickness casualties?"

"Those recon guys can run fast. Only 18. They're been treated, the 18th Air Cavalry are evacuating them to Colstream mainland like they asked"

"So much for the fucking surrender"

The Colstream Island was being totally evacuated as the radiation detectors on the island started to pick up radioactive particles in the atmosphere over the island and on the ground.
A new act was passed by the Colstream Parliament:

Resolution #1560-Nuclear Prevention Act:

This act will protect the Republic Of Colstream from any similar incident occuring again on Colstream Soil.

1. The Republic Of Colstream will spend 15 Billion Colstream Pounds on a "Nuclear Prevention System.(Details Classified)
2. The Colstream Air Space is restricted to Colstream's allies and other nations must ask for permission before entering Colstream Territorial Waters and Airspace.
3. Resolution #1236-Free use of Colstream Air Space: is repealed and made void.

The Colstream held island had been evacuated as the Colstream Army NBC Warfare Specialist Wing was established on the island to start monitoring the radiation cloud. The Regular Units had been evacuated but several specialised NBC units had arrived to test the soil and see what damage had ben done to the area and whether it will be inhabitable.

"Good news, gents"

Admiral Johnathan-Paul said as he walked into the room.

"The radiation is said to have mostly dispersed. We can move in, I think"

"I s'pose there's nothing more to it. Kerlingham, send in the nearest
armoured, and tell them to keep the NBC stuff on"

Major-General Kerlingham saluted.

"Sir!"

Front lines - ex-positions of the 355th Reconnaisance, now the 771st Armoured Battalion

Lietenant-Colonel Huxley's voice crackled over the radio.

"Sorry to disturb your beauty sleep, people. Got an order from FHQ. We move in to the centre. Might be some food there, we don't know. NBC packs activated, it's still contaminated"

Huxley too his finger off the transmit button and sat back down. He gave a weary sigh.

Lietenant-General Hartmann ran briskly into the room, and picked up a radio telephone reciever.

"This is nest, come in, trigger two"

"Trigger two here, strength three"

"Huxley, sitrep, we need a sitrep"

"What did you expect? 50000 rebels armed with railguns?"

"So the island is clear"

"Yeah. I'd get out and plant a flag in the crater, but we ain't got NBC suits. That, and the music player doesn't have the oh-so-herioc national anthem track"

"Well done, trigger two. Island clear at 16:32 local time by Lieutenant-Colonel James R. Huxley, you should make colonel for that"

"Best tell the Colstream guys. Oh, and ask for a cash prize this time"
