Political Information
The Empire is an absolute monarchy. The Prime Minister and the cabinet are appointed by the King to assist him in managing the nation. The people have no say in how the country is run, but non-black men over 25 do have the right to vote in elections for the House of Commons which can propose legislation to the Prime Minister.
The Colonies are directly ruled from Jesselton, and such act as part of the Empire itself, just detached geographically. Recently, authoritarianism has taken hold on Questers as Communists run an active insurgency movement in the south and the east. Many political arrests have been made, though State Security Services have not yet begun political executions.
The country is split up into provinces which are generally dominated by their "native" ethnicity, with Czechs and Japanese receiving, controversially,a non-native province each. Each of these sends MPs to Parliament, which is effectively powerless, and military units are raised from these provinces. However, Jesselton mantains strict control over the country's political systems, with no level of devolution accepted.
Political dissent is on the rise. Although economic action is not possible, riots and other forms of political lobbying against an authoritarian government are widespread.
Social Information
The country is staunchly (85%) Protestant, with high Church turnouts on Sunday. In previous times, Anti-Catholic feeling has run high, but it has been at an all time low recently as allying with Doomingsland and other Catholic countries has been seen as beneficial to the Empire, and Catholics are becoming more respected in society. Jews and Muslims are still looked down upon and often face discrimination, usually ignored by authorities, and are used as scapegoats when things go wrong.
Questarian society is highly segregated along racial, sexual, and class lines.
Racially, the mainland itself is almost entirely white, with two billion aborigine and native people in the colonies (who have full integrated whites), and a billion blacks in the mainland who were given freedom from slavery just twenty years ago. However, strict racial segregation is enforced, and there are many racialist and racist legislations and laws. The Government has been criticised by leading racists as it allows a mixed race person's grandchild to be considered fully white if there is no more black marriage into the family. Racial theory and racism runs high in Questers and considered part of the Questarian way of life.
The country is also highly sexist, with legislation in place preferring men to women and especially in regards to education. It is thought the traditional place of the woman is at the home, and this is reflected in laws where women can not drive, vote for a politician, or do many things considerd normal in other countries. However, they are treated "respectfully" and, the middle class at least, would never lay a finger on a female.
Questers has a thriving class system, with a working, middle, and aristocratic classes. Often the working classes are politically apathetic, but recently Communism has begun to find its way into working class movements. The banning of trade unions and recnet legislation giving workers many more key priveleges (such as free education and minimum wage) has helped reduce the Communist influence into the worker base. The high count of poor working classes and their lack of education means Questers is lightyears behind its regional counterparts in development and GDP.
Both men and women act and dress conservatively. The country does not have liberal atttitudes towards the arts, etc.
Economic Information
Questers runs a generally free market, with some restrictions such as minimum wage and unemployment pay. Trade unions are strictly banned.
The Government taxes mostly on income, with low tarrifs and low corporate tax, following through on economic liberalisation. Tax cuts for small business are easy to get, as are free trade agreements. Mainly the country exports foodstuffs and steel/coal, massively importing fuel and other various things. Govenrment spending is approx 30% of GDP/PC, and although the government keeps inflation down over unemployment, inflation is still on the rise as is unemployment. However, the economic is steadily regrowing after historical economic disaster.
