Clandonia Prime

Downing Street, Warminster
The chime of Big Billy the clock at Westminster stirred the air on the late November afternoon, it was bitterly cold as the motorcade swept through the large anti-terrorism last gates that had been installed by the previous Prime Minister over a decade ago. Sir Alan Philips got out the first Range Rover followed closely behind by Lord Ashdown of the Royal Navy, taking tea in the Library with the PM. Topic on the table today was the further expansion of the Clandonian nation to the North specially, an area between the ZMI held province between Bretton. Clandonian naval forces routinely skirted the area in the movement in and out of Haven as well as patrols for escorted merchant shipping. Stepping into Downing Street bypassing the regular security the men were ushered into the room where a table with refreshments was laid out.
“Good afternoon Prime Minister, I trust all is well?”
“Good afternoon Philips, Lord Ashdown. Right shall we get down to today’s business, I have a meeting in Nottinghamshire regarding the mining issue so must be gone by four o’clock.”
“Prime Minister, the issue today is that the exploration and further expansion of the Crown must take top priority, these charts show the vacant area in the Arctic along with the islands bellow that we plan to claim. The Royal Navy already has two battlefleets within four days sailing of the area along with several logistical and submarine squadrons. On your orders and that of the His Majesty Clandonian Royal Marines can be flying the blue ensign in these territories.”
“What reason would we want these other than the strategic value are there mineral resources?”
“Possibly yes, ZMI has large scale mining and mineral exploration activities along with their military presence. The strategic value is incredibly high, it gives us a presence to the West meaning we can intercept any hostile threat to our allies or to the Clandonian homeland. Other reasons can be the use of the islands as a penal colony for our worst prisoners, scientific research and meteorological stations. With your permission Prime Minister I can issue the preparation orders now, the Crown flag will be flying by the end of the week.”
“Very good, you have the Cabinets backing what do you propose to call these territories?”
Sir Philips finished his cup of tea and took a piece of cheesecake from the tea trolley.
“I thought of calling the islands after King William and the main landmass will be referred to as Clandonian Arctic Territories. Perhaps we could let the plebs decide as a popularity gaining exercise?”
“Very funny Alan, if it was up to the proles they would call it ‘Gaza’ or ‘Posh’.”
32nd Submarine Squadron, Central-North Haven
The submarine group had begun its accent from the depths of silent operation to its new duty of landing the first Clandonians in the Arctic Territory. The two largest submarines, the Danskeran SSBN’s were powerful enough to break the thick ice which was nearly 10 metres by now. As their powerful reactors propelled them upwards dud torpedoes were fired to soften the ice and judge where the surface was to avoid damage to the periscope video optics. The first submarine HMS Prudence, broke through the ice the force making her hull creak as she stabilised on the shore between what was thought to be land and the frozen sea expanse. The first to step out was the Captain of the vessel accompanied by four Royal Marines and followed by the First Officer and Navigator, climbing down the ladder and jumping from the submarines hull onto the pristine ice. One Royal Marine carried the flag of the Crown, planting it firmly into the ice as the assembled crowd saluted it before a photo was taken by an aboard journalist from the Times and quickly beamed back by the ships satellite transceiver to the offices in Warminster.
The other submarines of the squadron has also started to break through onto the ice, men glad in black arctic gear indicating naval personal with Royal Marines in white digital pixel camo with their DR-83 and variants draped in white sniper tape. This was the force that would hold the turf until aircraft could land once transport ships brought the transportable runway equipment to begin air operations. Nuclear icebreakers had been chartered to allow for the battlefleets and squadrons to bring in more equipment to begin the expeditions to establish a full Clandonian claim in the area. As the various ships companies stepped out into the cold, posing for pictures with crews and sections playing about in the snow with footballs and cricket bats. Officers from the various ships got together, someone had produced a few crates of Scotch whiskey and had begun passing it around as to ‘keep one warm’.
King William Islands, Northern Cayuga Sea
Slightly further South in the assorted islands a Clandonian battlefleet of the 12th Grand Home Fleet ‘Havenites’ had reached the first of the larger islands. The force of one hundred vessels escorted landing vessels, helicopter deployed troops and landing craft sent out from the Pheasant Assault Carriers, smaller vessels lowered from the cranes of the capital battleships and dreadnoughts. The larger County Class Carriers protected in the ring of steel formation by Lion Class Missile Cruisers and the Broadsword Anti-Air battlecruisers. Captains watched as the Royal Marine and engineering contingents from the Royal Army moved equipment onto landing craft. Heavy lift helicopters moved pallets from the decks of the County Class Carriers, suspended beneath with quick release hooks ready for dropping on the marked areas. Range Rovers rolled onto the snow covered pebble beach’s, men disembarking from helicopters as the first flag pole was driven into the ground.
“Report to Warminster and His Majesty that the Blue Stars of the Crown flies along with the White Ensign of the Royal Navy.”
Came the words of Admiral Sir Penance, the most senior naval commander who had gone in with the Royal Marine commandos, sitting inside his Land Rover with a Thermos flask of hot chocolate sipping it as a he lit a cigar, a truly historic day in Clandonian colonial expansion in Haven. The small collection of Arctic tundra perma frost covered islands added a huge strategic asset to the defence of the country along with the exploration for mineral wealth.

The Foreign and Colonial Office along with the War Office confirmed this morning that Clandonian military forces had landed in two areas of the proposed new colonial claim. An area in the Arctic circle has been designated as the ‘Clandonian Arctic Territories’, this area was claimed by a Royal Navy submarine squadron where a photographer from the Times photographed and interviewed sailors who were the first to step out onto the frozen expanse. Expeditionary Royal Marine forces are preparing to travel further onto the land and reinforce the fully claimed landmass under the Crown Colony Act of 1884. Speaking in Parliament on Wednesday during Prime Ministers Question Time, Sir David Sistilin confirmed the deployment of an extra Royal Navy battlefleet to the North Fyre Sea for patrol in addition to the Fast Battleship Squadron already in place. His Majesty King William VII expressed his delight in the naming of the island chain after his 8th Century ancestor who was the first monarch to start the tradition of a strong link between the Royal Navy and Crown.
In a statement this evening His Majesty's Government announced the colonisation programme and the intended land that would be controlled. Ministers are debating plans to create a penal colony for some of the countries worst criminals along with a multitude of companies lining up to take up the Crown Territory Mineral Exploration and Mining licenses. Experts speaking to the Times explained of the mineral wealth that is trapped directly bellow the ice under the terrain or on the sea floor under the thick ice sheet which spreads several hundred kilometres south during winter. It has been hoped for some time that the country will be able to secure an self sufficient oil and natural gas resource thus ending the instability of importing with its costs in transporting and defending chartered tankers adding the the consumer price at petrol pumps. Economists have warned that unless the price of petroleum and crude oil falls then inflation will continue to rise adding more misery to home owners with increased mortgage interest rates and higher costs of consumable goods.
