The Blub Colony

Blubland, Haven Region
The warning signs were there. It had actually started to happen years ago and yet the residents of Haven were ignorant of the event. The large ships departing Blubland and heading east were a daily event and to the amusement of the Blubs, no one even seemed to notice. It wasn't just that a coup was taking place, but rather how blind to it their neighbors were.
The population of the cities declined as the years went by. Many of the towns and cities still had power and lights burned, from satellite even, cars navigated the streets. All seemed well.
However, the level of facade was immense. Those left behind were kept amused and busy by driving around the cities, entering buildings and messing with the lights, and generally making the places seem occupied. But one by one.. even they shut down.
Some might attribute it to the massive recession that Blubland had claimed.
Some might attribute it to a failing civilization.
The rest were just too stupid to care.
It was a warm day in November, when the very last blub boarded the very last transport ship in the Bay of Blubs. A helicopter drifted in from the mainland and settled on the ship's landing pad. As the ship turned and steamed east, out of Haven to meet up with her escorts.. the final gift was delivered.
Mountain Heart Naval Base
Under the Emerald Mountains, viewed from a distance.. there came a dull-sounding thud. Then another and another. A trio of high-yield thermonuclear devices went off, completely collapsing the undermountain naval facility. With a jet of steam and debris shooting out of the mouth of the main entrance.. the base was no more.
Amethyst Island
The huge port had been deserted. The empty submarine pens dark, the massive ship hangars vacant. Then.. as if in slow motion, a fireball consumed it all. The multi-megaton warhead knocking down every tree on the island, scorching the earth and turning the beaches to glass.
Blub City
A single, large weatherballoon type craft was at the end of a 14 kilometer long tether. Floating over the city, the 'Voyager' which had made news in Ceylon had really been just a testing platform for a simple delivery system.
The Blubs didn't have the heart to level their prized, beautiful capital city. So, they had simply made other arrangements.
At a very precise time, a tiny counter clicked down from 000:01 to 000:00 and the bottom of the platform dropped open. Out fell a sizable multiple delivery system package. As it fell the first 3 kilometers and picked up its ultimate velocity, the warhead went off. The sides pealed away, revealing a cylindrical device loaded with missiles. In eight directions the missiles fired in a volley, carpeting Blub City and its outlying areas. Each warhead detonated with a suprisingly quiet thump.
In a brief flicker of light, the neutron devices went off. The lands below were saturated with neutron radiation, penetrating far deeper than alpha and beta radiation, and twice as much as gamma. Everything the invisible energy touched.. became contaminated.
The falling delivery device fired one more salvo of eight warheads, this time even further out. Those too went off, contaminating the lands around Blub City for 10 kilometers in all directions.
Blubland
Like a nightmare, all around the country fireballs rose into the night sky. Scattered throughout the nation, the nuclear payloads leveled cities and industrial sites. In the eastern oilfields, more neutron devices were let loose, turning large patches of ground into glass and irriating the drilling sites. The gold and copper mines, the dams, the power stations.. all bombed.
A final farewell from the strange, little green Blubs.
