Today, Brigadeer General David Bakker announced that the TDF would be soliciting proposals for vehicles that would fulfill the newly created role of "Airmobile Light Tank." The ALT Project, as it is called, is part of the TDF's Force 21 program for force modernization, which aims to update the former colony's military. "The ALT project," said General Bakker, "will provide our forces with the ability to respond to crisis situations with both speed and force."

Airmobile Light Tank (ALT) Program: Solicitation for Proposals

The purpose of the ALT project is to construct an armored vehicle capable of providing close fire support for infantry as well as medium to long range (~2500 to 3000 meters) anti-tank capability in a package which can be transported in the C-130J tactical airlifter or beneath the CH-47 Chinook helicopter by means of a sling. The vehicle must also be capable of deployment via the Low-Altitude Parachute Extraction System. The crew of the vehicle must be protected against small arms and heavy machine gun (up to 12.5mm/0.50 cal.) fire as well as reasonable protection against rocket propelled grenade rounds. Any active protection systems must pose as little a threat as possible to nearby infantry, as the ALT is intended as an infantry support vehicle.
