(This thread is the background of my nation. Feel free to read and comment: constructive criticism only.)
Sarania-Lindaria. Most people do not know that there is such a nation in this world or that it was once a peaceful nation filled with hard working and determined people living under a beloved constitutional monarchy. That all changed in 2003, when minions of corruption dragged the nation down into the abyss, sending members of Parliament to their homes while the Royal Family was exiled to their main summer palace at Redmond (they are all under house arrest but cannot be executed due to the military's support for their existence). The leader of the coup was an energetic hellraiser named Lucius van Allen, a bloodthirsty politician who enjoys extorting loyalty from the fearful populace. He is a man of paradoxes. He loves his family, for example, but has no problem shattering other people's family bonds. Lucius has a wife named Stephanie, a son named Marcus and two daughters named Irene and Alexis. Stephanie is not really politically inclined, her goal is to protect her children from whatever dangers they may face.
All totalitarian leaders who follow the gospel of authoritarianism require a secret police to keep the multitude of citizens in line and Lucius van Allen's Internal Intelligence Agency is no exception as it manages the vast number of imprisoned dissidents and criminals who are locked away in the cells of concentration camps. The Agency's leader is Pontius Walker, a bloodthirsty merciless officer who rose through the ranks to become the most feared man in the entire nation (second most feared if you consider Lucius van Allen)
The economy struggles after years of prosperity but the Government has promised to work at reconstruction the economy that has fallen into hard times. The military remains formidable even if not as large as the superpowers of the world's militaries are. In the capital city, the Legislative Assembly Buildings have been "closed to the public until further notice" with massive locks on the doors.
Communists, Anarchists, Democrats...all are victims of the Government if they choose to fight Lucius van Allen and his group. Communists are often satirized in the government owned newspapers as hypocrites but anti-Communism is not officially a government doctrine. The military protects the Royal Family from a Romanov style death and to kill them would provoke the eschelons of power in the military to fight ruthlessly against the organizer of such an act. The Royal Family is just a group of figureheads with the eighteen year old Queen Alexandra's only function being to maintain the monarchist tradition started over five centuries ago. Her parents are deceased and she can marry whoever she wants but all suitors are watched by the Government, after all they do not want a monarchist inspired revolt to shake the nation.
No one knows how much longer the van Allen regime will last but all the citizens of this nation can do is live their lives and try to watch what they do and say, as you do not know if your neighbours are actually government spies ready to hand you over to a concentration camp warden for being a political recusant.
