ZANYO DECLARES INDEPENDENCE
In a surprising and unexpected move, citizens of the recently founded Zanyo Prefecture have declared their independence from Japan. Zanyo was originally, in 1992, settled by Russian-Japanese citizens who had developed methods to not only live but thrive in the previously uninhabitable mountains of Japan. The Japanese government was quick to, in 1994, take credit for this success, despite having no involvement. This created tensions.
In an attempt to ease the tensions between these settlers and the Japanese government, the government made all of the mountains that were regarded before 1992 as uninhabitable the new Zanyo Prefecture. However, this did not ease all tensions.
Despite the tensions, no one could have ever predicted this, not even many Zanyian citizens. Zanyo seems serious about this position, and has even begun amassing troops and weapons. The Japanese government doesn't seem interested in war, although they have agreed it may be an option.

ZANYO GAINS INDEPENDENCE
Early this morning, after a four-year long war between the Zanyo Prefecture and the Japanese government that begun in February 2000, the Japanese government has declared defeat. The terms of defeat included Zanyo's independence as it's own nation.
The Japanese government has begun withdrawing troops and weapons from Zanyo. Prime Minister of Japan said, "War is a proving ground, and Zanyo has proved themselves."
The citizens of Japan, for the most part, seem unaffected, and claim they would if Japan had won. According to local housewife Ai Watsuki, "Zanyo just isn't that important to us. Most everyone agrees."
