Euphyrias
Singular/Plural: Euphryrian, Euphryrians
Physical Characteristics
A race of men, the inhabitants of the Euphyriad Plain are for the most part tall and healthy, with bronzed skin. Their diet, a combination of seafood and the bountiful harvest of the fertile plains area, is cited as a major benefit. Average male height is between 5'10" and 6'2", with average female height between 5'4" and 5'11". The Euphyrians are long-lived, with life expectancy for men at around 225 years and 240 for women. They are less prolific than other human races, however, and children are comparatively few at an average of two to three per family.
Government
The city of Euphyrias is unique among the Plains cities, in that it is governed by an elected citizen council. While the other cities have their kings and dictators, Euphyrias has the Senatus, or Senate. The senate is elected by a democratic system, whereby every four years, every male, land-holding citizen of good standing submits a vote in favour of an individual. The votes and names are then counted, and the top thirty candidates are selected as the new Senate. There are no term limits.
The only member of the Senate not elected in this manner is the Princeps Senatus, a learned man appointed by the temple of Deivos, the sky-god, who keeps order among the Senate members.
Society
Euphryrian society is structured around, above all things, the survival of the city. Plagued by enemies without, spies within, and with the old wounds of Elven occupation still sore, the city hasn't been at peace for almost twenty years. The plains cities squabble like infants over territory and resources, each unable to destroy the others.
Population Centers
Itanthium is the most populous city of the Plains, followed closely by the city of Euphyrias. The lands between the cities are heavily farmed and irrigated, using comparatively advanced methods.
Euphyrias - 185,600 adults
Itanthium - 192,400 adults
Arcene - 149,900 adults
Sibisana - 145,200 adults
Trade
Trade between the cities is minimal, as they are almost continually at war.
Technology
The Plains cities have a great tradition of encouraging scientific thinking and philosophy among their citizens. They utilise advanced farming and construction methods, including water mills, pumps and water screws, as well as pulley systems and specialised construction equipment. By default, these innovations also translate into a very effective knowledge of siege weaponry.
Religion
The religion of the plains cities is as varied as their politics, though chief among them is the worship of the sky-god Deivos. Also revered are Divea, a fertility goddess and sister of Deivos, and Daeva, the gluttonous, destructive and brutal god of war and death.
Each of the three temples has a cadre of trained magic-users, with skills varying upon their patron.
Military
The military forces of the cities are usually built along the lines of a volunteer citizen militia, often with a semi-professional warrior elite, usually the.ruler's household guards, at the core. Weapons of choice range from short spears and longswords to pikes and hunting bows, and their methods of use vary greatly.
The only exception to the norm is Euphyrias, which boasts the only professional army of the plains - the Novus. Euphyrian troops wear banded steel armour, crafted by the Tidan Dwarves. It provides excellent protection for the head, torso, shoulders, forearms and shins, with the calculated angles and reinforced helmet avoiding many otherwise lethal blows. The Novus contains a professional medical corps, using the most advanced knowledge available combined with rudimentary healing charms to ensure that as many wounded soldiers as possible can return to the field.
