ARM-21L Overview

The ARM-21L (short for, simply, Assault Rifle, Model of the Twenty-First Year of Lyta) is the standard-issue infantry rifle issued in Brellach.

Designed in (and produced from) 2007, after Queen Lyta's military advisers suggested to her that the 1932-issued battle rifle in use until 2007 was somewhat obsolete, the ARM-21L was designed by a conglomerate of Brellach's leading small arms experts under the banner of the government-owned Brellach Weapons Industries. It has since been admired by Brellachi Legion soldiers as a rugged and reliable weapon, if otherwise unremarkable by international standards.

One of the primary motivations for issuing the ARM-21L was cost, as the rifle is particularly cheap for its class at only $950 per unit (a portion of this cost is as a result of the sight). Although willing to market the weapon abroad, if only to offset some of the cost of their modernisation program, this cost would rise to $1,100 per unit as the Legion of Light purchases the weapons 'at cost'. Still, the Brellach government has not made any efforts to properly market it.

History

The Brellachi military forces, known as the Legion of Light, are renowned amongst the very small proportion of the world who has heard of them for utilising equipment for as long as practically possible before ultimately discarding it. While ultimately this leads to military impotence in many cases, it certainly saves money.

As such it is appropriate that, until 2007, their standard-issue infantry rifle was the BBR-45Q, a battle rifle that had been in use for over seventy years before ultimately being replaced. This rifle was semi-automatic and chambered to fire 7.9mm cartridges, but was old, unreliable, and severely outclassed by its later years. Queen Lyta's military advisers had been aware of this for years (as were the previous monarch's advisers), but were reluctant to recommend a replacement for fear of offending her.

Eventually, however, it became apparent that the ancient rifle was more of a liability than a weapon, and so the Legion Guardians made the recommendation that a replacement be either developed, or purchased off-the-shelf. Unwilling to send money to foreigners, Queen Lyta opted for the former option, and commissioned a replacement rifle for the armed forces. The result, approved by the Guardians, was the ARM-21L. Its design was finalised in 2007 and entered production later on in that year.

Already the first few batches have arrived with Legion forces and it is being reported to have decent accuracy, reliability and firepower. It is yet to be tested in real combat.

The ARM-21L has been nicknamed the 'Emancipator'.

Design

The ARM-21L is a short-stroke, gas operated, rotating bolt assault rifle chambered for domestically designed 6.4x42mm 'BAR' cartridges and built according to a conventional layout. This cartridge is hoped to offer a decent compromise of stopping power, penetration abilities, recoil and accuracy between smaller and larger intermediate rounds, and the rifle was designed around this cartridge from the beginning. The trigger mechanism allows for semi-automatic, three round burst, and fully automatic firing modes, along with a safety position.

Much of the rifle's effective range is owed to the BWISS-4 optical sight, which is mounted atop of the rifle. This sight offers a 4x variable zoom with tritium illumination for use in darkened conditions, and is designed to offer normal infantrymen additional range and accuracy in a fire fight. It is mounted on Brellach-designed equipment rails and can be removed in favour of iron sights. A flashlight is located beneath the barrel, which can be removed and replaced with a purpose-built 30mm grenade launcher.

Both the upper and lower receivers are built from aluminium alloys, and its bolt, bolt carrier and barrel from steel, while the stock and grip are constructed from polymers. The stock is fully retractable, as part of a measure intended to remove the need for carbines and improve its portability (the value of this measure is debated). When fully-loaded, in standard configuration with the BWISS-4 sight and flashlight attachment, the ARM-21L weighs a little over four kilograms.

Overall, testing has suggested that the weapon has 'average' capabilities - although considered to be quite reliable (though failing to live up to the reliability standards of the likes of AK-47s, it surpasses several other common rifle types), the weapon has no other particularly grandiose selling points.

Variants

The ARM-21L has been designed to fulfil as many roles as possible with as little expenditure as possible, although two variants have also been commissioned.

The first, the ARM-21L-DM has a fixed stock and an elongated (421mm) barrel, with a trigger group denying the option for fully automatic fire, and is intended to give additional range and accuracy to marksmen.

The second, the ARM-21L-SSW has the same elongated barrel, but sees the removal of the BWISS-4 sight and the addition of a folding bipod in place of the flashlight. It also has a drum magazine in place of the standard 35-capacity magazine, and lacks a semi-automatic option. The ARM-21L-SSW is designed to be a squad support weapon, intended to fulfil the role of a light machine gun when a dedicated machine gunner is not available.

Adoption

The ARM-21L has been adopted as the standard-issue rifle of the Legion of Light (Brellach military forces). One point two million units have been ordered by the Legion, and several batches have already been delivered.

Additionally, several thousand ARM-21L-DMs have been ordered, and several more thousand ARM-21L-SSWs.
