WASHINGTON, DC- As has been reported on previously, last year, after months of voting and deliberating, the United States ratified a constitutional amendment to provide a legal process for secession. Recently, a third party in Michigan called "the Party for an Independent Michigan" gained a majority in that state's legislature, and also gained the governorship. Yesterday, January 26th (which happens to be the date Michigan joined the Union as a state), the State of Michigan officially voted to secede from the United States and form an independent nation.

There was an emergency vote in a joint session of Congress, and Michigan's secession was approved with the votes at 422-113. The former State of Michigan re-christened itself the "Republic of Michiganica", a pseudo-Latin form of Michigan.

The Republic of Michiganica has entered into formal diplomatic relations with the rest of the world, although relations with the United States remain somewhat strenuous. The new nation's main struggles will be re-organizing the governmental structure and balance the economy, which has been struggling for a while. That latter issue is one of the reasons why Michigan has seceded from the first place.

The President of Michiganica, Alexander Engholm, could not be reached for a statement, although in a speech earlier today he was quoted as saying "We the people of the Republic of Michiganica, in order to form our version of a perfect union, have established ourselves as a free and independent nation." This statement is a reference to the Constitution of the United States.
