Perimeter Defense has, over the years, gone through several methods by which superluminal travel can be attained. Many are still retained, where low energy consumption is more important than high speed, or where size of engine is important.
Here are six + one methods in PD for breaking the light barrier:
1) Hyper-assist
"Subdiametric" approach into hyperspace that disables time dilation effects in FTL travel at the cost of low speed. Maximum: 300c
2) Casimod (Casimir Modification)
Locally increases speed of light, plus special displacement for forward motion. Max speed: 7,000c. Side effects: Radio transmissions move at this speed also.
3) Null-acceleration
Supplemental method. Null-field can accelerate from standstill to high speed without transitional. Bypasses infinite-mass and dilation problem of passing through c-speed. Requires other FTL method to function. Max speed: Unlimited (based on FTL method used)
EXPERIMENTAL METHODS
4) Unnamed Black Hole Method
Shoot spinning black hole in front of ship. Pass ship through ring-shaped singularity and be rocketed away at high speed. Max recorded speed: 32,000c.
5) Catapult
Torus Catapult, stationary installation accelerates targets to 72,000c for up to three weeks, with very rapid decline after duration. Max speed: 72,000c.
6) Transverse Lumokinesis
Ultrafast FTL method. Causes relativity to break down at the fundamental level. Be at two places at once using special infinite-dilation effect of being at exactly 1c, temporally compensate, then use inverse disentanglement displacement matrix to replace copied superstrings with your own. "Transverse" because of the linear graph of the speed, inertia, and temporal effects. Max speed: Infinite. (Needs energy burst equivalent to 30kg of antimatter interacting with 30kg of matter)
