OOC: This will be the IC thread for the Blue Flag 08 exercises, even news coverage is fine. I'll post a short IC here, I'm stretched for time.

IC:

0900
Fallon AB,
Nevada

The sun shone on the flightline at Fallon, the shiny Supermarine Storkes and Cossacks of the C.A.F and the C.N were the ones that were the most shiny, having just been delivered and painted a month or so ago. The Storkes stood against the sun, and the pilots scrambled to the jets to do the first exercise.

OOC: Where is the OOC thread - the old one, I presume? We need to know what this will be, after all, or discuss the operations.
Also, where is Fallon?

IC: Towering above their escorts, two magnificent landing ships were quietly approaching the Calizorinstani coast from the West. With a signaling howl, planes started to take off, one by one, heading towards Fallon.

IC:

The base guards were working non stop, now that there would be a lot of foreign military units that would need security, to prevent any killjoys from coming on the base.

C-141's landed from various parts of Calizorinstan to unload the Marine Corps troops, and to also deliver parts for the Marine RF-4B Phantoms that flew up from Lemoore AB, and also for the 185th and 186th Recon Group, which operated RF-4E Phantoms.

Just then, a flight of four F/A-15D Cardinals landed at the base, part of the 144th Fighter Group, from Fresno AB.

A very large group of aircraft, mostly C-5s circled above the airfield. High above they circled, like vultures, over a dead carcass in the desert. The large aircraft blotted out the sun as they passed under it. The more nimble aircraft, their escorts quickly circling around them or passing under. As soon as clearance was given, the C-5s began to land, one by one. As soon as they came to a stop on the burning blacktop, the ramps dropped and troops, IFVs, tanks and even helicopters. After the C-5s had been offloaded and began heading home, the fighter squadrons began landing. After everyone had made it too the ground, the soldiers were formed up on the tarmac, awaiting guidance on where to go and what to do.

The commander of the troops for this scenario, Col.Tom Hutchison beckoned for the newly arrived foreign troops to follow him into the briefing room, and he stood near the screen, which displayed a picture of a man, bound, and he said "Today, we are going to do a hostage scenario, and here is the scenario, which isn't real, but for our practicing it is. A CEO of an unknown corporation has been kidnapped by a terrorist group named "Alpha Niner", and taken to a small town just 40 miles from here."

"We need to storm the town, and while the rest of us are attacking the enemy, which since this is a war exercise is the local Marine Corps garrision, we need to get in, get the hostage, and get back out."

General Yonatan Berg and seven divisions of troops - two armoured, two infantry and three artillery - totaling 175,000 troops (25,000 per division) arrived in Calizorinstan. They wanted to improve their skills at fighting ground wars, but also train some air force personnel; they also had several wings of fighters and airborne warning.

[OOC: I hate arrival posts, and waiting the obscene amount of time it would normally take to move seven divisions. I'm just here so as not to be a laughingstock on the battlefield.]

On Gryphons' Wings

Several Il-76 cargo planes began to approach their preselected landing site, scheduled to come in just after the Hawkian forces had cleared the field. Flanking them were the 959th, 960th and 461st regiments of the Adygean Air Force, who were to participate in the exercise. The first of the group began to descend onto the runways, speedily taxiing out of the way of their brethren. Once parked, the planes began to disgorge men and equipment.
+++The 7th VDV was the first to begin trotting out of the cargo holds, by chance (although they joked that they were simply destined to be first all the time), and they took the chance to set up an area in one corner of the airfield for themselves, while they waited for their comrades to come off, and watched the 131st MRB and the various other units disembark. The airborne's vehicles—armoured and otherwise—were parked in a series of herringbones nearby.
+++"Cмотрите на него, там," chuckled a man with the chevrons of a sergeant, tilting his head in the direction of a young man, riding atop one of the BTR-80s of his unit as it trundled over to the 131st's assembly area. "Он имеет хорошую идею, да?" This drew a chorus of mirth from his compatriots surrounding him, who soon turned back around to start chatting about how fucking hot it was out here. Naturally, a handful of the NCOs had been in Afghanistan during the war, and either rolled their eyes in exasperation, or berated their subordinates for spewing nonsense, and grumped that they should be thankful they hadn't come in the dead of summer for their sakes. They might have fainted, they joked, and made motions of putting the backs of their hands to their foreheads and falling backward, clutching at their chests.
+++Into this bucket of warm and fuzzy feelings dropped the 108th Airborne Assault Regiment, 7th Airborne Division, who would eventually settle down at the northeastern side of the field. They did not do so quietly, however: given that they were not just airborne, but airborne assault, they were the most epic of epic win that the Adygean military had to offer, and they flaunted it at every opportunity. A group of soldiers leading the rest of the pack, apparently all of a single squadron, came strolling across the runway, hooting and making a ruckus as they went. A couple fired their rifles into their air—blanks, granted, given the nature of the exercise, but it had roughly the same effect as real bullets.
+++Most everyone else put their faces in their palms.

The commander of the Orbathian side of the operations followed the man into the H.Q.

'' A hostage situation. Do we know how many hostages, their location, amount of enemies, that kind of thing.''

The Major General turned and yelled out the door to a man who had taken up the position of attention just in front of it.

'' Tell them air cav boys to get geared up, we've got a mission.''

OOC: Sorry for the short, crappy post. Do we get a map of the area we're operating in?

Finally it was the Orzi's turn to land and deplane their equipment and cargo. They didn't have nearly as much as some of the other participants, but they were confident in their training they had received up to this point. They eagerly looked foward to working with some of the best militaries in the world. Now, it was time to wait for everything to get organized, and find out who was doing what.

The fighter pilots were probably even more cocky, as all pilots are. After checking their F-37 Shrike's and F-36 Gladius's were properly taken care of, they headed off to the pilots lounge to find out about their exercise for today.

The first of the large C-130 transport planes began view from the horizon, leading them was a relatively small jet. Major General Forge was the ranking officer that would be participating in the game. Other high ranking adjudants and support staff were present.

Jinos had decided to ship its infantry and lighter vehicles by plane. Unlike the other countries, their armor would be arriving by sea, to be transported to the testing grounds. It would save them fuel, and more time.

Hours upon hours of transporting the smaller Jinos divisions and brigades coming in. Company's formed battalions, battalions formed Brigades, although a good portion of the military might was suppost to be formed in Divisions, a few units were kept in their Brigade formations. Soldiers from below looked up towards the sky and watched as C-5 tansport planes delivered their air support, in particular the 2nd SAAG, providing their intelligence/recon and other speciality type aircraft. And, after time, the thunderous roar of their tanks could be heard coming in, the men laughed and joked.

As it so happened, Jinos was a relatively cold nation, the northern shores subject to Blizzards. The hot weather of Calizornistan was both comfort and unbearable to the soldiers, not acclimated to the arid land. Curses and tans were in most abundance, but they all had their own laughs when some of the other nations soldiers were shipped back.

The expeditionary force was slowly being assembled, and the soldiers enjoyed their relaxing time while the techies and pen pushers went in to set up their portable command posts and information center.

General Forge and a few other officers listened to the briefing, he had more kept quite during his stay. Some of his adjudants remarked at his skill in "Fake sleeping," someone nudged him in the arm and he awoke with a start. He settled back in as they chuckled and listened into the brieding.

"Someone tell me what I missed later" he whispered, elliciting a few grins.

Colonel Hutchison smiled as all the foreign troops walked in and he said the same hostage explanation for the scenario as he did then he said "We will need air power, for they hostage takers have some aggressor aircraft, and thus the Orbathians and Vault 10 will take Route Package 4 to the north, and bomb any enemy air fields you see, while the rest, cover the helicopters and the C-17's that drop the troops into combat."

- "Any more data?" - General Andrew Lessard, a relatively young man in thin decorative glasses, asked with routine expression. - "Recon team, code yellow, stay clear" - he quickly spoke into the radio.

Some of the planes enroute started to change their course. Two flights, of 2 RA-5CM (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RA-5C) and 2 F-35C each, took two routes a good distance aside from the city, to gather the information.

''Will do right away.''

The man walked outside of the H.Q. It was blistering hot outside. He was used to it being a bit hot in Orbath but never like this. He had served a few desert campaigns in his younger days and so this wasn't anything new. The heat hit his black beret covered head. He hadn't had a chance to switch to his tilly hat yet. He marched over to the man standing in front of the formation of soldiers. Before he got there the man brought them to attention. The General approached and was saluted by the man, he saluted back and told the man to march away.

''Parade, Standat, ease!''

He yelled this in his parade voice, his parched throat allowing the words to escape.

'' We've got ourselves an operation.''

The formation let out various whoops and yells which echoed across the parade square.

'' Its a hostage situation.''

The majority of the soldiers remained quiet, only the air calvary troops celebrated.

'' We've also got some bombing runs to do.''

The soldiers in blue cheered.

'' So lets do this right, hoop!''

''Hoop!''

'' Parade, Atten-tion!.''

The sound of a thousand combat boots, all in perfect timing echoed across the square.

''Parade, As Detailed, Diss-Miss.''

The soldiers turned to the right, and marched three paces, coming to attention again and walking off.

Their unit commander got them together, in different sized huddles and moved them to different areas.

The General took out his PDA and messaged the different commanders, giving them their jobs.

The pilots ran to their aircraft, jumping inside. The mission would be carried out by the F-36 Gladius pilots.

The aircraft were already loaded out and just awaited the orders to go from H.Q.

[ OOC: Let's wait for the recon data. My planes are doing a deep area scan. I guess it's time for Caz to state the opposing air force composition. Or at least part of it - we can miss something.

Then we'll form a proper-sized group for the combat to be interesting.
Maybe we need more OPFOR. Green Hawk, what about playing for OPFOR? You're air force specialized (as a player, I guess?), so are we - it can be a good fight. ]

RA-5C have made a semi-circle around the city and were approaching it closer, hiding well behind F-35, ready to detract the fire if the enemy noticed the recons.

Reconnaissance data started to display on the screen, but for now with little detail yet.

OOC: That might be fun... I'll do it, but no one sided smash okay? Calizorinstan what do you want in a bad guy?

OOC: I am having F-5's and my old Su-27 Flankers as the opposing team, they are of the red squadron, or the opposing side..

IC:

The Su-27MKI Flankers, piloted by the 114th Aggressor Squadron, climbed out of the airfield, and headed towards the enemy planes, and the F-20 Tigershark squadron followed them towards the enemy..

Meanwhile, SA-2 Hawks were set up outside the little town, and they were set up, so that planes would get simulated launches, they'd have to defend themselves, if not, a beep would sound and the planes would simulate being shot down..

Meanwhile the C.M.C (Calizorinstanian Marine Corps) UH-60's flew low level towards the town to insert troops near the battlefront.

Colonel Hutchison had the foreign commanders assembled in the war room, with a live map of all of the troops movements and he said "We have some enemy troops marching up to meet us, and to provide extra re-enforcements, they are carrying M-16's, and they have M-60 Pattons for their armor support, we need to take them out."

Major General Forge gave the order to start mobilizing their military assets, he leaned over to Colonel Hutchinson.

"May I recommend our 3rd Special Armored Brigade? Our newest Paladin (http://www.mahq.net/mecha/gundam/seed/lineartank.jpg) tanks can easily double or triple the enemy's maximum effective range and punching power with our superior railguns. Our 19th Gunship Brigade AH-V1D VTOL Lances (http://www.mahq.net/mecha/gundam/seed/vtol-ea.jpg) can provide close air support" he said, looking down at the map.

Outside, one of the 2nd SAAG's Spectre unmanned survialence sleath craft launched off of the tarmac. Flying at a high altitude it began surveying the battle area, relaying scouting information to the Jinos makeshift information center. The arriving supply Battalion began the supply process for their troops, tanks, and aircraft, the Air Division began preparing their fighters for flight.

"WIth all due respect. My REX brigade would make any and all tanks worthless in enemy hands. The gunships woud provide a threat, but the tanks would be murdered. So I suggest that your gunships escort your tanks any where they go." The General wondered why everyone was looking at him strangely until he realized no one here knew what a REX was.

"Oh, I'm sorry. A REX is basically an unmanned walking anti-son of a bitch thingy that can wipe out entire tank brigades in moments. Yeah, scary, and they can hurt infantry even more, but they are weak against aircraft. If they can get them in their sights at least... So air support for the other side is a must unless you want a simulated blood bath." The General chuckled.

OOC: A T-REX (http://www.game-reviews.ca/ktml2/images/uploads/metal_gear_solid_4/metal_gear_solid_4-6.jpg).

Colonel Hutchison said "We've got Su-27's, SU-34's, GEM F/A-15's and some Eurafighter F-37's for the enemy air support, also for the enemy we have GEM Aerospace B-22 Zeus bombers. To simulate what the most common fighters and bombers you'll find in the real world."

"I shall have them deployed then, Major, go ahead and give the orders, have them deploy along this front here." Forge gestured along the line of Patton tanks. One of the adjudants got up and jogged off to get the order in.

Practically seconds later the thunder of tank treads meeting with the ground could be heard. The M2F1 Paladin tanks set out for their formation line, at the head was Captain Powell.

"All tanks, advance to grid 361D, your tactical maps will be updated by the Stealth Spectre overhead, our mission is to provide long range cover to the Patton tanks" he shouted over their closed radio, the deserts of Navada would prove geographically in favor for them.

''Your troops see good at meeting the enemy head on but my air cav can fly right over them, land close to the hostages and rescue them in minutes.''

He then thought.

[ OOC: A REX is basically an unmanned walking anti-son of a bitch thingy that can wipe out entire tank brigades in moments. Mechs? IDK, this is perhaps the most contentious thing in NS.... More importantly, without a design description, there's nothing to go about. Maybe we'd limit this to widely accepted designs - or, if not, at least designs with detailed specs and description?
We can't fight a picture, after all. ]

IC:

RA-5CM have imaged the field of battle with TV and RADAR, spotting among other detail the OPFOR aircraft, and field combat control centers gradually revealed the forces composition. As some of the enemy planes headed towards them, the recons turned back, leaving Orbathian planes to take the first collision.

Andrew Lessard nodded in response to report. - "Prepare the fighters and move in mobile AA".
His subordinates started to transfer the orders.
- "Squadron Beta, Gamma, prepare to takeoff!"
- "Control flight Zeta 1, takeoff!"
- "Ground group 4, close to safe distance from the city!"
- "Ground group 2, cover team 4!"
- "Gecko flights E, F, G, H, cover team 4!"

In minutes, a few fighters started taxiing towards the local field strip, and a few armored columns moved ahead.

OOC:
Force composition is:
Squadron Beta - 8 F/A-18E/F, 8 F-35C
Squadron Gamma - 8 F-5M, 8 F/A-18E/F
Zeta 1 - 2 E-3M, 2 EA-18
Group 4 - Air defense, 4 launchers, 2 TELAR, 20 vehicles total [will detail later]; 54 men, 10 officers
Group 2 - Ground combat, 12 Type 90, 8 EFV, 8 support trucks, CCV; 120 men, 8 officers

OOC: Firstly, which physics are you applying to keep that thing upright? Second, what weapons do you have on it, there's no way you'd be able to mount any sort of effective anti-tank weapon on it that wouldn't cause it to tip over except a missile. Third, my tanks, having larger more powerful guns, could easily triple your REX's range, a regular tank probably has more range as well, then there's the fact these will be signifigantly underarmored.

You better start explaining how this could ever work properly before saying, "My <Insert> will just completely own everything of <Insert>"

[ Do we have a map, and do we know where the executive is being kept, exactly? ]

Eight Adygean Mi-8MT helicopters began to lift off from the tarmac, four of which contained elements of the 108th BPV, 7th VDV, and four of which were armed with B-8V20 rocket launchers and 9M114M2 AT-6C Shturm missile racks, the latter of which were armed with fuel-air explosive warheads. The rockets were armed with flechettes and penetrators. The group swung around to face toward the city, and tilted their noses down, running about four and three-quarters metres from the ground in a formation with about thirty to thirty-five metres between them. They picked up speed as they moved across the flat Nevada desert, in a roughly rhombus-shaped formation, the transports at the centre and the attack helicopters leading the group and flanking.
+++At the same time, two squadrons of MiG-29s were gaining altitude, having taken off from the base a little before the last boot entered the transports, and positioned themselves on either side of the helicopter formation. They would be the vanguard of the force, and would primarily work in tandem with the Vaultian air defence units to protect the Adygean and Vaultian units as they approached their targets, but would also be on call to intercept incoming fighter aircraft from the Calizorinstani, Orzese and Hawkians in other sections of the battlefield. The regiment of Su-25s would be available for tank-busting strikes if the Vaultians needed it, but were not going to support the Adygean units, given the nature of the battle—or at least that was not their current mission. Having been thrown into the battle without a chance to plan, The Gen.-Lt. was having to work things on the fly.
+++At the command centre, Generál-Leytenánt Nikolay Tchadin motioned to the Group 4 unit icons on the map, and turned to Gen. Lessard. He arched an eyebrow, and asked in low tones whether he thought that the Type 90s were going to be able to handle the Paladins, in particular, and whether he would like support from either the Su-25s or the 131st. He had his own theories about the effectiveness of the Paladins, but he figured he'd rather get another opinion than rely solely on his own when he didn't have to.

OOC: lol. First, that was IC not OOC. Maybe I rp my Generals as over confident bastards? Second, I'm PMT so yeah (if you don't like that then I can remove the REX from this rp). Third, they just basically run, jump, and land on enemy tanks. Smashing them into pieces or they can just use their legs (which can turn a full 360 degrees) to flip the tank on it's back, and of course a tank's gun can destroy it. >_> Everything needs a weakness you know... Just like your tanks. :p

EDIT: Just saw this.

I'm working on this right now. I'll post it with my next IC post. Again, if no one likes the REX I shall remove it from this rp. Agreed?

OOC: Meh, overconfidence in battle leads to ultimate humiliation, however, how a "REX" is going to flip over a couple ton tank is beyond me, let alone rip it to pieces without toppling itself.

In anycase, it's the GM's decision, but if things get completely unrealistic I'm gunna say something.

IC:

Captain Powell's Paladin rolled across the sand of the desert. Approaching their target area, someone found the incoming Dalnijrus Type-90 tanks to their 11 O'clock, he reached over and grabbed his mic.

"Already ladies, computer targeting arrays up, load Sabot rounds and put some fire on our guests, our objective should be to force a ranged battle, everyone come around 90 degrees to our right" the small disks on the back of the Paladins popped up. The tank colomn moved around left, each turret spun about, placing the T-90's in their sights, each gun shuttered as they fired Armor piercing Sabot rounds towards their foe.

At the airfield the Lances began lifting off, the 19th Gunship brigade began their advance to the 3rd Special Armored battlion to give airsupport.

[ OOC: I can't really tell anything without at least the specs. I mean - how do I even know if it is a 40-ton or 200-ton tank? That will decide things. And numbers! We need specific force composition, because 4 tanks and 40 tanks are entirely different things. ]

Andrew, concentrated at the intelligence data at the moment, pointed at the Ground Force technical consultant.
- "We're not entirely sure. The Type 90 tanks have excellent fire control systems, but they aren't designed for head-on close-range anti-tank warfare. Their frontal armor should hold a hit at a few hundred meters, but generally we plan on two-flank strike. Considering Paladin construction, we can easily immobilize them from any arc and pick from the flank."

- "So only if it's planned well. We'll send Gecko gunships (http://z13.invisionfree.com/The_NS_Draftroom/index.php?showtopic=3300&view=findpost&p=1079431) to do most of the cleaning. Flights E and F will follow the tanks at low altitude, while G and H will stay a little behind, conserving fuel in jumps, until we find the targets. As long as the sky is clear from enemy fighters and we have reconnaissance, they'll do fine."

In the meantime, squadrons Beta and Gamma covered the Dalnijrus fighters from the flanks, at medium altitude. F-35 fighters scouted ahead, transmitting data to planes of both forces through E-3M from Zeta 1.
Two RA-5C followed them, replacing the previous flight.

[ OOC: These Type 90 are from my forces. Also, Gecko variant used is Block II (since it is 2007 already), modification T2 - anti-tank tandem. 63mm Gecko autocannon is similar to Israeli 60mm gun which penetrates T-72 frontal armor; side or top penetration is achieved even at extreme angles. ]
[ If the picture is correct - and we don't have anything else to go by - tracks are almost unprotected and make good targets. ]

- "We're under fire!" - their talk was interrupted by a transmission. - "Pulling back!"

One of the frontal scouting tanks, registering successful hits, stopped and lit the red light for "taken out". The crew jumped out, boarding the EFV behind.
Others fired at the Paladins' tracks, to immobilize them, while retreating to leave only the weapons above ground cover.

Eight Geckos (http://z13.invisionfree.com/The_NS_Draftroom/index.php?showtopic=3300&view=findpost&p=1079431) popped up, firing 4-round bursts at one of the Paladins each, and immediately hid again.

[OOC: If you're talking to me, I have two armoured divisions, and 75-ton tanks, so think ~2,000 tanks. I'm not posting yet because I haven't gotten an OK and don't want to intrude on someone's mission.]

OOC: I'm talking to Jinos - it's his tanks I'm fighting.

As for your forces, what about sending just some of them? Not that we're going for equality, but 2000 tanks and 175,000 men is larger than the whole German Army - that'd probably be a good part of your national forces, take a lot of time to ship, and just not fit on the whole war theater we have here. Maybe 5% or at most 10%.

P.S. Could you avoid quoting the whole post to make a brief reply, at least when that post is right above?

[OOC: OK. I could try and cram what I need into one division-strength expeditionary force, maybe a brigade of mechanised infantry, and two brigades each of armoured and artillery; that would reduce the number of tanks to 400 and 25,000 total troops (5% of my total military strength.)]

[OOC: Reduction in strength: only 25,000 troops will train here.]

IC:

A division-strength force remained behind, the majority of the troops boarding ships back home so as not to grossly outnumber their competition, or overstretch their forces.

General Berg approached the organisers of the wargame again, this time with one brigade of mechanised infantry, and two brigades each of armour and artillery, for five brigades total - 25,000 troops.

"What role is there for a force of this composition? I and my commanders are hoping for a defensive position; we are not by ideology or design an offensive force."

Colonel Hutchison said "Of course, you can be used as the defenders of the city and the hostage, that's fine by me. Your troops will make good opposition for the attacking forces.."

OOC: I apologize for not being on, I'm just busy with school and all of that stuff.
