"A Dream of all humanity, a true tribute to the cradle of civilization"

The proposed Kiravian 'Doomsday Ark' (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=542359) was an inspiring idea. It was an attempt to save all those who valued this planet from total destruction; an attempt to continue our life, heritage and multi-species kin into the post-apocalypse which, god-forbid, grows closer by every glassing, by ever war.
The Eden Project: [OOC: See here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eden_Project) for the threads inspiration]
The eternal crown jewel in the Commonwealth. A multi-racial, multi-ideological refuge, where life may continue beyond this age. The Domes will include worldwide climates, habitats suitable for all-life on the Earth. The project is not just a library of all we have, it is a home. A proposed city, able to contain the Commonwealth's population through natural or synthetic disaster, able to withstand nuclear and atmospheric fallout associated with war and extraterrestrial impacts, able to withstand biological toxins and disease. A sister 'Ark' to the Kiravian masterpiece will lay underneath the city, in the event that the upper-levels are destroyed by any future cataclysmic event. The city will utilize complete self-efficiency, with geothermal, Wind and solar power among others.
The The Utopian Commonwealth (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=542157) no-longer thirsts for the blood of every man who defies this stunning planet which we are so lucky to inhabit, instead, we aim to preserve it. And if we cannot save the entire world, then at least we can save a few kilometers of it. Become part of the UC and your ideas will be heard over the voices of others. Choose to remain independent and you still may contribute, thus saving a place for some of your people.

Should the world burn in the fires of man, the city will seal itself, forever protecting a time-capsule of Terra at her most beautiful.

Official Communiqué

Addressing the membership of the Utopian Commonwealth;

Thank you for your participation, planning for the City shall begin immediately.

The Utopian Eden Project Trust

*****

Semi-OOC:
Our first act should undoubtedly be drawing up statistics of the project, i.e dimensions, number of domes, power, recycling system, government mechanics (It will have to house the High Council of the UC, being the capital city), Recommended population et cetera...

(This also applies to any non-UC members interested, you are also welcome to participate in this project, although only UC members will have a deciding vote in what is actually incorporated into the city)
Bring on the imagination!

Some Kiravian ideas:

On Government

Since the city will serve as the UC capital, maybe it should be like the Federal Districts of Australia and the US, where the city is under control of the capitolee.

The city shall be governed by a Capital Affairs Department, under the High Council. It should be lead by a Municipal Council, with a Mayor or City Administrator as the head, and report to the High Council. Using the Kiravian democratic civilocracy modell, the people of the city would elect a group of candidates, one of which is selected for the job by a vote of the COuncil.

Some material for the buildings, hastily thrown together. Please leave comments before I expand and edit onto the first post, Cheers.

"Biomes"
The atmospherically contained domes themselves, dubbed "Biomes", are separated according to purpose.

The City Biome
The 'Hub' of the complex. The city Biome shall be constructed large enough to accommodate some 25,000 residents in an Arcological format. Housing both the city council and the UC High Council, it is undoubtedly the capitol of the Commonwealth.

The Tropical Biome
Home to a magnitude of plants and wildlife indigenous to the dense jungles and rainforest's of the world.

The Warm Temperate Biome
A mid-temperature dome designed to facilitate life from the Mediterranean region and beyond, suitable for species from both arid and European climates.

The Cool Temperate Biome
A dome dedicated to preserving the life of the north of Earth, this Biome is constructed to house temperatures on a par with Scandinavia or Canada, hosting a variety of unique flora and fauna.

Agricultural Biome
As the name suggests, perhaps a collection of domes suitable for producing enough food to support the population without draining valuable supplies in the long-term occupation without external contact.

The "Ark"
The sister to the Kiravian 'Doomsday Ark', the Eden Ark will follow all the same principals and purposes. The Eden Ark will also house the majority of public services such as waste-recycling management and a geothermal power station in order to keep the city operational.

City Mechanics
In order to be fully self-sufficent, the Eden Project will require significant facilities and law to uphold an acceptable standard of living.

Power
Presumably based on a powerful geothermal outlet, the city should be able to refrain from resorting to a nuclear reactor to generate sufficient energy. The Biomes may also be powered from external Solar and Wind farms.

Recycling
Using local rainwater redirected to sanitization plants in the City's numerous synthetic catacombs, there should be a sufficient water supply provided to both the environments and the population. In the event rainfall becomes too toxic for local laboratories to neutralize, an included water-recycling plant should continue to reuses the H2O supply for as long as possible. All other resources, be they metallic or biological, must be recycled and re-adapted for use using sub-ground facilities.

Politics
A system of elected councilors to a local community council will then be headed by one representative; the winner of the election. The Consul will then answer too the High Council of the Utopian Commonwealth itself.

Defences
With the vast majority of essential systems located in the "Ark", an EMP generator on the surface could effectively disable a proportion of any incoming assault on the city. The project however, is not intended to focus on warfare; instead a peaceful solution to modern problems.

Materials and Specifications
"The biomes are constructed from a tubular steel space-frame (hex-tri-hex) with mostly hexagonal external cladding panels made from the thermoplastic ETFE. At the outset, glass was proscribed due to its weight and potential dangers. The cladding panels themselves are created from several layers of thin UV-transparent ETFE film, which are sealed around their perimeter and inflated to create a large cushion. The resulting cushion acts like a thermal blanket to the structure. The ETFE material is resistant to most stains, which simply wash off in the rain. If required, cleaning can be performed by abseilers. Although the ETFE is susceptible to punctures, these can be easily fixed with ETFE tape. The structure is completely self-supporting, with no internal supports, and takes the form of a geodesic structure. The panels vary in size up to 9 metres (29.5 ft) across, with the largest at the top of the structure." Source: Wikipedia- Eden Project.

From: His Imperial Highness, the Lord Damon Malis
Subject: Eden Project
Message:
I would like to extend my support, and the support of the Arnatian Empire, in this endeavour for the preservation of humanity and indeed all forms of life upon our planet. I have long been concerned with the welfare of our world and the threated posed by environmental degradation. After speaking with members of the Imperial Senate, and my own father, the Emperor, it has been decided that we will make contributions as much as possible to this cause. Orders have been dispatched to our universities and science centers to gather and transmit as much data as possible, along as many samples of our plant and animal species as we can. Our scientists are quite eager to become involved in this project and expand our genetic and environmental scientific knowledge.
As a final addition, our continent has large amounts of unused land, presently partitioned into 20 districts and made available to the international community, for a price, but we would be willing to freely provide one of the districts, or our own Barrier Island for use by this project.

Barrier Island is the red island, Districts 1, 15, 8, 9, 10, and 20 have been claimed, but any other may be used. Map (http://img221.imageshack.us/my.php?image=arnatiacontinentkz3.jpg)

Official Communiqué

Addressing the Arnatian Empire;
We are humbled that you have chosen to take part in this most valiant en devour. All your materials will be greatfully received and stored ins stasis until the project is complete, in the meantime however, Arnatian scientists are free to express their ideas.
On another hand, should you choose to apply to the The Utopian Commonwealth (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=542157) and be accepted by the High Council, you will be able to do more than merely 'express' your ideas.

OOC: A similar thing exists in Montrêal. Linky (http://www2.ville.montreal.qc.ca/biodome/site/site.php?langue=fr) For those of you that don't parle la Français, It's an indoor zoo in the Montrêal Olympic stadium, with several ecosystems combined under a dome.
SEMIC:

On Domes

SOme suggested biomes:

Colder Biome

Polar, Arctic, Glacial, Tundra, Subarctic, Sub-Anarctic Island, and Polar Marine ecosystems.

Alpine Biome

Contains flora, fauna, and terrain from the world's mountain regions, centred upon a large, artificial mountain, constructed of concrete. Mountain soil types will be contributed by the Empire. We are currently doing research upon how to synthesize specific soil types.

On Power

Geothermal is definately the way to go with this.

On Lighting

Alternatively, we could use Ott technology to replicate artificial sunlight under an opaque dome.

On Space & Planning

It may be necessary, should the outside world become uninhabitable, that the population within Eden grows, and they are forced to expand. We must leave enough absent space between domes, and undergound, in case of such a need. Also, we may end up needing larger & more biome domes.

On Defence

Aye, but the nature of this project mandates that Eden be prepared for anything. If it is attacked, and the generator fails, we need to have a conventional army to fall back on. I suggest a garrison of UC forces to defend the capital.

On Politics

I suggest that political parties be either banned or subdued from city government. If the Eden was to become the last vestige of Humanity, it should be free of partisan squabbles.
Yanitaria

The United Socialist States of Yanitaria whole heartedly supports such an effort. To this end we will donate seed samples, and in cases where seeds are delicate, living samples to the Eden Project.

We will also donate supplies, scientists, and workers.

On space, we suggest that the Eden Project allow for 200 years of population growth, and build accordingly. This way, even in the worse scenarios, over crowding will only be a minor issue.

On location, we suggest a cold climate, with temperatures as cold as possible. In a post-apocalyptic world, anti-freeze in hydraulics will be hard to come by, meaning that nature will protect the Project in case of attack. Also, nations that need a military upgrade will be unable to attack. To date, only tanks built in the 80's and beyond come standard with anti-freeze, but many times corners are cut on modern vehicles.

The Yanitarian contribution is gratefully received. My only concern with the Polar base is the following:
Say the world goes through a period of accelerated climate change (Nuclear holocaust, whatever), then global warming is very, very warm (equals a very wet and unpredictable Polar region), but that's not it, then the Atlantic conveyor shifts due to hyper desalinization, redirecting the tropical waters and cooling the sea a damn lot. Then, that theoretically would trigger an ice age, sending ice sheets over most of Europe in a mater of decades. In short, I doubt the city would survive both of these.

As for the Kiravian thoughts, all of them seem fully acceptable. In fact, how about a wall to be constructed round the city? It would keep post-apocalyptic zombies out, plus it could be fitted with all sorts of weaponry. It also would serve as a garrison for the UC city guards. Yeah?
As for Politics, Boimes and Spacial planning; I couldn't agree with you more. You'll have to explain the lighting concept to me though.

The USSY suggests a small, enviornmentally stunning island recently acquired earlier this month. It has previously only been inhabited by 45 Stoklomolvian Enviornmental Preservation Officers (ooc: or something like that), and has a solid bedrock foundation so that the facility may be built underground. The island is big enough to accomodate 25,000 people if the need arises, although building upwards would be required.

The island's geography includes a plane that is covered for 1 square kilometer under 1-4cm of salt water during the high tide, but the ground is firm, and can commodate light buildings, or elevated buildings.

The island is unnamed, although we propose the name "Eden".

We suggest an inland ares, to protect the city from oceanic turbulence and changes in sea levells.

However, there is no location in the Kiravian Empire suitable to place such a structure, save Igneousea, which is slowly degrading into anarchy.

--
We also support the Pictavian idea for defencive walls.

As for the lighting:

Ott lamps were a type of lighting system invented by a German physicist. They are a perfect replica of natural sunlight, in frequency and intensity. I happen to have one sitting on my desk, so the answer to any further questions is only an armslength away.

Good point.

There are mountains in Northern Yanitaria where the population is scarce. They are big enough underground multi-leveled cities. more than enough to accommodate twice the proposed population of the New Eden Project.

Here is an idea: Since travel times to the different countries would be impossibly long for a large population, perhaps there should be Eden "Towns", with the capitol being the original. There could be one for each country, that holds all the plant material that the original was planned to hold, so that even if only one survives, they all survive in a minor way. Also, a small group of settlers from each country can be quickly sent to each colony so that the country's heritage is preserved. It would cut down the travel time for all, so that in the event of a disaster, the projects can be locked down in 24 hours or less.

Although it would be a sight more expensive, the cost per project would go down.
