History of Kortelan:
Kortelan was a free country for thousands of years, but then it was called Verronia, named after the capital of the country. Verronia was a more a confederation of tribes that worked together and sometimes gathered in several cities and went to council meetings in Verronia to dictate laws. Most of the time these tribes had little contact with each other and lived according to the way the tribal leader or leaders had them live. Most of them were farmers, fishers, or hunter gatherers. Then about six hundred years ago a budding nation that fancied itself an empire attacked the Verronese people. In a valiant effort the tribes united and created an army that was far larger and better trained then the empire's army. The Verronese people fought for close to one hundred years sometimes getting within sight of the empire's capital. Then the empire's army and navy set aside their differences and pushed the Verronese people back until they were destroyed and the nation assimilated into the empire. For five hundred years the people of Verronia suffered under the empire slowly becoming a part of the empire and most of them turned their back on their proud history. Then twenty years ago the empire had a civil war and a young farmer named Kortelan was the leader of the province of Verronia. Kortelan was a Verronese by birth and he had grown up wishing for a free Verronia. During the civil war he gave up the entire garrison of imperial troops and in their stead raised an army of Verronese. Then he declared independence and they have waited for an imperial response for awhile now. After the independence the people voted to have the country named after Kortelan to show his part in the independence.

Government of Kortelan:
After Kortelan was created the government was intended to be the tribal council of years ago, but it was soon figured out that the tribes had ceased to exist at all. Then a republic with Kortelan as a head was implemented. The republic created jobs and public projects and a moralistic democracy for the people. After the groundwork was set in place, the senators started bickering among themselves. Some wished for a Verronia of past, others said modernize is the only way to survive, others said Kortelan was fine how it was. This lasted for seventeen years. At the last election three years ago, Kortelan suspended elections as a debate raged about whether people should be forced to vote or not. As head of the state, Kortelan sequestered the Senate, telling them that they would not leave the government sector until they had sorted out their differences and the country could go back to normal. They are still bickering and are no closer to figuring out a course to go then they were three years ago when they were sequestered. For the past three years Kortelan has been ruling as a dictator but he is has shown himself as a benevolent dictator and has the love of his people.
