Aperature Science HQ[/i]
With the recent influx of Barronian assistance, Aperture Science had virtually exploded with activity. White spheres on legs were scrambling across the entire facility, which was now producing a healthy black cloud of smoke from the correct areas, IE: the smoke stacks, as opposed to the windows which had previously been issueing a significant amount of smoke.
Working with all the effeciency of ants, albiet ants that were certainly not capable of lifting ten times their body weight, the white spheres dragged, pushed, pulled, hauled and robot-handled the required material into place. Working with more specialized models they blended asphalt and concrete, worked metal, riveted, welded and hammered.
The roads of the region, previously run-down, recieved a healthy new coating of cement, allowing for the legion of assorted trucks, cars and vehicles of the load-bearing sort to begin the trek back and forth from ASHQ.
Of course, underneath the glistening white coat of paint, the sphereical robots were mostly built of whatever junk happened to have been lying around or had arrived from Barronia. The cars and trucks had been sitting in the employee parking lot, untended, for many months. The road and construction sites were littered with broken down cars and spheres. The area looked like a wasteland despite the activity.
Of course, both cars and robots were, at precisly 10 o'clock twice a day, hauled back to ASHQ for recycling or repair, and set out to work again until they broke down.
Theoretically this was a highly inneffecient way of doing things, but considering the extremly limited resources and extent of the recycling and repair facilities, it was easier than bringing in outside labor.
A few humans were scattered here and there amoung the sea of robotic ants. They were few and far between though, and very carefully shunted away from the laboratories and internal structures of Aperture Science with polite phrases such as, "The area has been flooded with a deadly nuerotoxin as a result of an accident. We cannot open the door." and "The area is currently undergoing maintenance."
Meanwhile, away from prying eyes, Science went on.
Most of Aperture Science was underground, after all, one thing scientists and robots had in common was a lack of need for sunlight, or an aversion in the case of scientists. White corridors lit with white flourescent tubes extended for miles and miles, down and in every direction, forming a supercity of massive size, the huge interconnected cubes, spheres, hemispheres, cylinders and other shapes that occasionally interrupted the vast network of various sized corridors served chiefly to hold massive scientific laboratories, as well as storage facilities and maintenance shops.
The deepest constructs were nearly eight miles down, and were mostly filled with cooling equipment and used to store especially secret or secure projects.
Between the buildings ran monorails, roads, pathways, all contained within the network of corridors. A human in this place without a map would most likely get lost and go insane, or simply be run over. Few of the scientists who had previously worked here would have recognized the place now, most of the human conviniences had been removed. The only reason the lights were left on was that most of the photoreceptors left over were keyed to the human spectrum and other types of sensory equipment were expensive or not feasable for the particular tasks set forth by GLaDOS.
Meanwhile, back on the surface, factories, idle until now, churned back to life and, under the care of their new robotic workers, promptly began to churn out vehicles and equipment stored in the vast underground memory banks of AS.
Considering the somewhat utilitarian nature of the plans, the items in question were not visually appealing. Most of them were white, basically round, and generally spartan in appearance. Most of them were slightly higher quality versions of the aformentioned sphereical robots, only with uniform legs, decent sensory units and less likely to explode.
Other, somewhat larger factories, were building somewhat more advanced items. Planes, automobiles and a variety of interesting armored vehicles, weapons androids and items which would certainly impress many military buffs. Most of these were employed in the testing areas of Aperture Science, although a few went into the huge storage facilites for later use.
[b]Things are going well. Personal note: Huge Success. Prepare more cake.
