Royal Military Hospital, Aranathan Wing
Ael Khalas, Altanar

The high-security wing of the Royal Military Hospital reserved for the Altanari royal family was designed to look more like a really nice apartment building than a hospital. Not overly plush, as the Altanari royals typically didn't go for grandiose displays of wealth; but comfortable and pleasant. No matter how much lipstick you put on a pig, though, it's still a pig. And this is still a hospital, the fifth King of Altanar thought pensively. He tapped his fingers impatiently on the arm of his chair, and patted his suit pocket irritably. Even the King doesn't get to smoke in here, he thought wryly, remembering how a polite but firm nurse had relieved him of his cigarettes earlier. It had been several hours since their arrival, but it seemed like forever to Aelkyn. "Shouldn't they be done by now? Do you think something's gone wrong?" he asked nervously, getting up and pacing back and forth in front of his chair.

Cianar, sitting in the chair next to his, simply chuckled. "It'll take as long as it takes, son. You don't want them to rush this delivery, it's a little bit more important then some package being sent somewhere." The older man's expression sobered slightly. "Melika's a strong woman. She'll do just fine," he said, but his expression did begin to convey concern.

Just then, the doors to the maternity wing swung open, and Asher Hamala, the Chief Physician to the royal family, stepped into the room. The expression on his face was sober, and his eyes never wavered as he sought out Aelkyn.

"Dr. Hamala....how is she...and the baby?" Aelkyn asked, waiting nervously for the answer. Cianar said nothing, only standing up and walking over to the two men.

Hamala tried to keep the sober expression on his face, but failed utterly. A huge grin broke out on his face. "Your Queen is just fine, my King. And I have the distinct pleasure of informing you that your son has just made his very vocal entry onto the material plane. You now have an heir, your Majesty."

Both Aelkyn and Cianar let out profound sighs of relief. "I don't know if I should shake your hand, doctor, or slug you for coming in here with that expression," he laughed.

"Instead of either of those reactions, I'd recommend going in there and seeing your wife, your Majesty," the doctor replied with his own chuckle.

The sound of trumpets and drums playing the Royal Fanfare was heard today in cities large and small throughout Altanar, as the news that Queen Melika had successfully given birth reached the pleased and excited populace.

At 8:02 am today at the Royal Military Hospital, Queen Melika gave birth to a healthy, 6 pounds 11 ounces male child. The child has been named Dayanar, and officially assumes the role as Crown Prince and future heir to the Altanari throne.

"This is a joyous day for Altanari everywhere, as we can look forward to the continuation of the line that helped found our nation and has led it to becoming the modern and prosperous state it is today," Prime Minister Jinella Agaranth said. Even the opposition had nothing but nice things to say. Liberal Party leader Alana Kasimira said she was "truly excited and happy for Melika, and for Aelkyn and their new son," and hoped that Dayanar will "continue in his family's tradition of providing sound and solid leadership for Altanar."

It was announced that in keeping with Altanari tradition following the birth of a Royal Heir, the entirety of next week will be a paid holiday throughout Altanar. This will be true for any government employees, and while the private sector is not required to comply, most businesses are expected to, as it would be seen as bad form not to celebrate the birth.
