In to the Fray (Open)

OOC: This is an open invite to anyone who wants to attend. Whether or not you have had pasted contact with Tappee or not everyone is invited. This will be a lead in to a internal struggle within on the government. During the event the two sides will quietly beginning trying to get support of foreign powers. You can either enjoy the party or pick a side and try to sway event in your favours.

IC:
Jade Allenson looked over the final draft of the invitation; It was hard for her to believe that this day had finally come. All the projection showed that it would not be long until Tappee’s population finally passed the 10 billion marker. To celebrate the event, it had been decided to make a week of festivities, and invite any delegates from any nation to join in, all that we needed for her to make the final approval for the invitations.

“I am not sure that I like this,” she said calmly as glanced over her desk at the man sitting across from her. His name was Terence Kandic, and he was Tappee’s newly appointed Foreign Minister. Like most men who had once worked with First X he had a solid build, with square shoulder, a defined chin, and rugged good look. Most would have simply been intimated by, he had the look of solider, and the service record to prove it. But he was no diplomat, and why that Tribunal had selected him to take this position was a mystery even to her. However, he words seemed to have made him the slightly uncomfortable, as he shifted about in his seat.

“What are you unsure of?” he asked finally asked after thinking for a moment, there was something in his tone, it was he knew what she was thinking or how she felt, but was trying to avoid bring them to the surface. He was afraid her, it did not want to push her.

She took a moment to consider her response; the political climate in Tappee had become a little more volatile as of late. During the war the Tribunal had rallied behind her in a single cause, now that the war was over therine were those on the Tribunal that were now pursuing their own goals, goals that were not always in line with her. Jade knew she had some enemies, but at this point was not sure if Terence was one of them. “I am concerned of timing of the event.”

“Timing?” stammer Terence as tried to understand what she trying to say, his response came quick this time, but it was in the form of anger “We are fast approaching a bench mark of our civilization, and you are questioning the timing of the event. Not only is this a milestone, also for far to long we have suffered the horrors of not one, but two wars.” His voice became louder with each passing word. “The people of this country need something to celebrate, this is that event.”

Jade sat there and listened, if she did feel anything if hidden deep beneath her calm exterior. She slowly leaned forward; as she did she folded her arms together and gently rested them on her desk. “You are more the correct Mr Kandic, the people do need some thing to celebrate, and everyone has sacrificed so much.” She paused for just a brief moment, out of the corner of her she caught a glimpse a family photo, the happy memories contained in the photo where long gone, but Jade could not allow her self to be distracted even for a moment. She turned her focus back to Terence. “If you are going to have any success in your position you must understand the concept of perception.”

Terence went to say something, but she cut him before he was able to get a word in “Clairmont our closest allied, who we fought side by side with during the dual wars, is in the middle of a massive planetary evacuation. I cannot even begin to imagine what it is like for those people. While they are undergoing this mass exodus, and while they are in the middle of this hellish feat, we are going throw a little party and show them how much better we are then they are.”

“I.. I” Terence stuttered.

She had him on the defensive, and with cunning and ferocity she pushed with her verbal attack. “You what? You at no point ever considered them in your little equation. Whether to you realize it not every thing that you do will be analyzed and picked apart by the foreign community, and how they perceive will have drastic implication on how events unfold, and how other view us. I my opinion I don’t think that you are the person for the job. But then again the choice is not up to me, the Tribunal has made the decision to appoint you this position, and regardless they have made the decision to have this celebration no matter what my opinion on this matter. Now go send out these invitation and make the arrangements for everyone arrival.”

Terence went to say something, but stopped at the last moment. Silence fill the room as the two sat there, so many words were exchanged, but nothing was said. Finally Terence rose from his chair and made his way out.

Jade allowed her self to fall deep into her mind trying to play events and predict the way things would on fold. A review of the guest list clearly show that there was more to this then just a party, mostly notably was invite of ESUS member. Jade had withdrawn Tappee from the alliance during its time of need, a choice that most likely did not sit well with its members. There was little doubt in her mind that Abigail would try to use their distant for her betrayal to get their support to have her remover from her position. Abigail had never hide her hatred for her hidden, she would have to tread carefully in the coming days. There was little doubt in her mind that this would be one hell of a party

Abigail’s was rather dark, and it only defining feature, was its lack there of. It was line with four grey concrete walls, and a series of florescent lights lined the ceiling, but they had dimmed to just give enough light. To the right of her desk a set of shelving had lined the wall, filled with nothing more then operational manuals, and government reports, each had been meticulously placed. The displayed a solid oak top, with nothing more then monitor to cover it, the keyboard was neatly hidden underneath. If she had not been sitting at her desk, or her name was on the door, no one would have known that it was her office. That was the way she liked it, Abigail was a extremely privet person, and anything she did show was to manipulate things to her advantage.

She had a sharp chin, with angled check bones. Her hair was held back in a tight ponytail, and she wore a wire frame set of glasses. She wore the glasses not because she needed them, but because she wanted people to under estimate her. She was cold and cunning and would do what ever she needed to get ahead with her goals.

Quietly typed in a series of commands into her computer, and a shadowy image popped up on her screen. “Is everything in placed” asked a voice from the other side to screen.

“Yes” quickly answered Abigail. “All the invitations have been sent out. All we can do is wait and see who comes.” She had spent too much time to let little details get in her way, and was annoyed that she was being questioned like this. “Don’t worry I have every thing under control.”

”Do you think that she knows what is going?” shot the voice back angrily

“Of course she know, it would be stupid of you to think that she does not know.” Fired Abigail back “I told you to let me deal with her.” However, patients had never been one her strong point. Having been questioned enough she terminated the connection. In the coming days she would need to focus. She say back in chair trying to think of her next step.

Government Tower
Irmansul City
Clairmont Island

"Atleast our comrades at Tappee havent lost their sense of bitter humour." Chuckled Judah Alexander, Elected President of the Freehold of Clairmont, Grand Duke of Irmansul, Warlord and Protector of the Realm, Defender of the twelve suns and by the maker's grace, leader of Clairmont. Personally, Judah detested the titles, but customs being customs and tradition being tradition, they had been heaped upon him without mercy by the Central Council and the people had supported that decision.

"They propably arent thinking it like that." Fleet Admiral (retired) and former Chief of Naval Operations of the Clairmont Space Navy answered, current Minister of Defense, smiling lightly.

"Im sure they arent, Im just ranting as usual." Judah snorted.

"Regardless of their intentions though, the timing of this planned circus is a bit difficult for us. Considering the changes I rammed down everyone's throats when I set upon this new Government, we really dont have politicians anymore with whom's services we could go without just so they can attend these kind of foreign events." The President continued, rubbing his chin, his gaze unfocused as he thought about the invitation they had been sent.

"Especially now." Caparelli muttered and gulped down the bourbon he had been holding absent mindedly for the last fifteen minutes.

"Especially now." Judah echoed the older man.

It had been only three days after the sixteenth wave of transports carrying Clairmontian colonists to their new homes had left Sol system when the Tappee invitation had arrived. While the transit time to Irmansul system, the new designated Capital System of the Freehold, was twelve days for civilian vessels, the time the transports would spend getting there would be hectic as the government and the private contractors would do all the final arrangements to provide the inbound colonists with all the basic elements of extra infrastructure they would need. Everyone would be working themselves to the edges of the grave to make everything go smoothly, it wasnt a time when the Government could send people off to party their asses off.

Judah noted that his friend seemed to be churning a thought deep in that all too clever brain of his. The Admiral always turned practically into a statue when a thought that needed ironing out presented itself. Judah cleared his throat and hid a smile as the older man turned his gaze upon the President.

"Penny for your thoughts old man." Judah said and chuckled, and was rewarded by a smile from the retired CNO facing him.

"I was just thinking ,that we just might have the perfect unfortunate bugger to send to this party, one who is in dire need of some time off." Caparelli said, his expression revealing none of the glee he was feeling.

"And who... might this person be? Have we hired some party attaches recently that Im not aware of?" Judah asked tightly, but with a glimmer of humour in his eyes.

"Well, I was first thinking of Admiral Rowe, but considering the nasty little insurgency that seems to be boiling off in the Anhur system, I came to the conclusion that we really cant dispense with our CNO. However, Admiral Harrington has just brought Third Fleet back to the barn for a thorough overhaul and she'll be bugging me and Rowe for the next four months for something to do while Third Fleet goes through its overhaul. Considering that it was her who brought the Expeditionary Force back to Sol and kicked the Imperials in the ass with a size forty boot of kinetic death, I think she will be well received over at Tappee. " Caparelli finished, pouring himself another half a glass of the bourbon they had been chucking down for the last two hours.

The President began to formulate a rebuttal but stopped in the middle of his tracks, failing to find a good counter argument.

"You know, thats an excellent idea." He said finally.

"I know. Good to know you arent paying me for my ruggedly handsome features and charisma." Caparelli chuckled.

"Well, those make up about eighty percent of your salary. In all seriousness though, Harrington could use the time off. I can barely remember her taking leave in the past nine years. She's been in one battle after another ever since she left for the Orion Sector war. Well, its about time she gets some serious time off." Judah concluded, setting his mind on the idea which meant no one and nothing could nudge him to decide otherwise.

"Which just means my friend, that you'll be the unlucky bastard who will get to tell Admiral Harrington of her upcoming vacation while I inform Tappee of our acceptance of their invitation." The President of the Freehold of Clairmont smiled. He had by far the more comfortable task of the two, but status hath its privileges.

Jade waited a moment to hear the lock click before pushing the door open. She was greeted by nothing but silence, a fact that she enjoyed for a moment. Jason her youngest son was staying her parents, while Mackenzie was visiting with a friend, so for the moment she had the house to her self.

Reaching for the light switch she made her way down the hallway into the kitchen, dropping her carrying case on the counter beside the fridge. Jade allowed her self a moment to relax leaning slightly against the fridge, it had been a long day and it was not going to get any easier in the coming days.

In the days of the war it had been easy, she had always known who the enemy was and how to fight them. Furthermore, the entire country was behind a single cause. Battles were fought on battlefields out in the open, now things were very different. Jade was now facing enemies at home; some wanted power, other wanted money. Now the battles were much more clandestine, fought in the shadows. Having this celebration was just the cover that they would need to make their first moves, and she would have to desperately find a way to fight an enemy that she would not be able to see. There were just so many different scenarios that could play out, different factors that could play in and affect the outcome. There were few people that she could trust.

This all been too much for her, and she was starting to get a bit of head. Rubbing the bridge of her nose in an attempt to reduce at least some of the stress she made her way to her study. Shadows accompanied her as only the light from the hallway gave its light to house. Passing through by the living room something, or someone caught the corner of her eye hidden deep within the shadows. There was little hesitation and years of training kicked in. With a single motion she pulled her sidearm from it holster, as she swung it towards the intruder her thumb slide the safety, in a single heartbeat she had brought the weapon to bare on the intruder, but she passed.

Through the veil of darkness she could make out a mans frame, he wore a dark suit which only added to his mystic, his face was hidden from sight. Despite the fact that he had a gun pointed at him he remained rather calm. “Is that any way to greet an old friend?” said a voice from the shadows. The man leaned forward bring his face into light; there was a hint of a smile on his face.

Quickly Jade relaxed her posture, the feeling of danger having passed she slid her weapon back into the holster. She knew this man well, though never knew his real name, if he was here he something important to say. He had helped save her life at least twice, and would only show up when things were bad, a thought that cause her some concern. “Why are you here?” she asked, she had allowed her nerves to calm. But refused to take a seat, she felt a bit more comfortable standing.

There was a brief moment as the man contemplated his answer. “You know why I am here,” he answered as he looked deeply into her eyes “The veil of darkness is growing with each passing moment, consuming the innocent, casting the world into chaos. While most will embrace this shadow, there will be a select few who will fight for what is right, and when all is lost in the darkest hour a fallen angel will rise banishing the this new evil resorting our people to their former glory.”

To say that Jade was annoyed would be an understatement, he had been vague, never giving her a clear answer, only pointing her in the right direction and hoping that she found her way. She felt lost, and had hoped this visit would give her direction, but now she felt even more lost. Hopelessly she tried to dig for more answers. “Are you saying that I am this ‘Fallen Angel’?”

“No.” quickly answered the man as he tilted his head ever so slightly “All of the pieces will soon be in place, and the shadows will soon come, there is no stopping that. However, you and you along can slow this, by the time that the other need.” He paused again looking around the room, as he was searching for something. His gazed stopped on a picture of Jade and her two children. “Your family has long been the guardians of this great nation” he looked back to Jade “And for that burden I am truly sorry.”

Stunned by his statement Jade fought to get out another question a knock on the door drew her attention, she quickly looked back to find the chair were the man was sitting now sat empty, she was now alone in the room left only with her thoughts.

Abigail look over the list of delegates that were attending, looking for those select few that she would like to meet. One in particular jumped out at her. She glanced over at her desk at one of her aid.

“When the delegate from Clairmont arrives, could you please make sure that they meet with me immediately, before any one else has a chance to speak with them.”

Nodding in agreement left the room. Finally alone to her thoughts, she began to play things out in her mind. There was one government that still had not announced wither or not that they would be sending a delegate, the Government of Steel Buttlerfly. A thought came to her, perhaps this was something that she would be able to use to her advantage.

There were a few more things that would need to be done before she could proceed, but if everything worked as planned she it would greatly advance her time table.
