The Volitaian Virus

The Virus, which currently has claimed one life, was discovered one week ago when a patient was admitted to Toopoxican General Hospital, complaining of severe muscle cramps and loose stool, at first Doctors believed the virus to be Cholera and responded by initiating an agressive rehydration treatment, this treatment did not work and the patient died early this morning.

Exact details have yet to be released but early reports state that the virus is a mutation of the Cholera Virus. Symptoms include violent and watery diarrhea turning into shock within the first four hours, followed by vomiting, fever and sever cramps and in the final stages, "Rice water Stool." Doctors have yet to explain how this Fecal borne virus managed to infect a man living in good sanitary conditions but popular rumour is that the virus was bred in a Toopoxican Organisation Research Lab, all accusations have been denied by CEO Lucian Brave.

Since the first reported case of the illness a further 16 people have been infected and quarentined at Toopoxican General Hospital, this includes two children of Saint Galius Primary School, which has been closed for hazard inspection and, perhaps more worrying, an entire household just a few streets from the Embassy District. A statement released today by the Health Department assures the nation that the virus is not yet airborne and that unless they have come into contact with any members of the virus they should not panic needlessly.

The Alfegos medics were arriving by the usual mode of Alfegan intercontinental transport other long distance: supersonic jet.
Onboard in teh front half of the plane were the medical personnel. However, the rest of the plane had been modified to be filled with their equipment: iceboxes filled with bloods, vaccines and other medication; large boxes marked "Sharps"; a portable laboratory unit for analysing DNA within any viruses.

As the C - 295S Ruby jet came screeching out of the sky towards the Toopoxian land, a message was sent.

"This is special flight AJT-SA1. Please direct us to the nearest runway to the outbreak, and give us instructions on how to proceed."

News of the situation in Toopoxia have reached us in Brutland and Norden. The United Kingdom of Brutland and Norden is willing to send a medical team to help in the quarantine and treatment of patients. If you permit us to collect specimens, we can probably help develop a cure for this new disease.

Because of the possibility of the disease spreading, all travel (passenger, cargo, everything) between Toopoxia and Brutland and Norden is hereby suspended. Contacts and travel must have clearance from the Ministry of Health before coming into and out of the country.

Toopoxican World Announcement

The virus has within the past day claimed another 6 lives, aswell as having infected another 100 people, Toopoxican General Hospital has been fully quarentined and Volitaia Private Hospital has been siezed by the goverment. Nations from across the globe have also put forwards their request to assist in the prevention of the disease, Toopoxican leader Gallus Raexe has thanked these nations for their involvement.

In related news, the Toopoxican second City of Naibe confirmed that they have at least one infected, this has sparked panic in the notoriously liberal City, it has not been confirmed whether the Toopoxican Internal Armed Forces shall be mobilised to counter this threat or whether it will escalate and spread.

Further allegations of Toopoxican Organisation involvement in this virus has been cried out from the streets, the Orgnisation has, of course, been in trouble before, elderly readers may remember the 1989 Regi Luni Nuclear Test disaster, a public relations fiasco that the Organisation never fully recovered from. (more information: Page 4) Blame has also been laid with the Goverment and their lack of interest in the health sector, many feel that the recent changes to law are too little too late.

The United Kingdom of Brutland and Norden wishes to help the people of Toopoxia in any way we can, and as such, would like to help in determining the microbiological properties of the causative organism, elucidating the pathophysiology of the disease, and of course, to find a cure for the disease. As such, we would be requesting for specimens, such as but not limited to:

THEOCRACY OF VICTORY LANDS SUSPENDS ALL TRAVEL IN VIRUS INFECTED COUNTRY!!

In a press release today the Internal News Foundation stated that "Hereby all transportation into Toopoxia is suspended due to virus scare." The news commandant proceeded to state that all travel including commercal cargo, international flights and domestic traffic are suspended due further notice. Also all Cargo and legal residents of Toopoxia are to be qurantined and detained to check for the virus. The Port Authority has also stated that all ships if any are tobe detained and qurantined in side the country. No offical word as of yet to what extent or what kind of help the VL hasoffered.

The medics had now entered the city, their equipment not too far behind them.

They entered the hospital, and donned sterile clothing and took out their equipment before entering the quaratined area.

One of the group took down notes on his palmtop while the others examined the external symptons. They were very much like Cholera, but the symptons were caused by a virus. What virus though?

A few blood and stool samples were taken, and 2 of the medics hurried with them back to the mobile lab onboard the jet, where the rest of the personnel were.

"The staining colour indicates it is a retrovirus. It attacks the gut lining, leading to massive diahrrea, dehydration and death. There are no drugs that are believed to stop it. So, what do we do?"

While a vaccine was not very close, an anti-serum was. One of the medics started to look down the case list for any survivors who could be used to collect an anti-serum against the virus.

The Virus Mutates

Toopoxican scientists have found already that the Virus has mutated from its original strain and that it continues to mutate at an increasingly fast rate, 7 deadly strains of the virus have been recorded thus far with several other easily managable strains. Of the most deadly is the TV-03 Strain, directly mutated from the original it appears to claim its victims within 4 hours of the first symptoms, Doctors have been working harder to avoid the spread of this strain, believing it to be the more mutable version. No strain has yet turned the virus airborne, but Doctors continue to work in stopping this from occuring.

Meanwhile in Volitaia Old District, riots have snatched the healthy population, who have began to loot and destroy much of the business in the area, Toopoxican Riot Police have attempted to keep this dissarray from spreading and the Toopoxican National Army has been fully mobilised to counter any further threats on the Goverment. The Senate has been moved from Volitaia to Kominski in order to further the risk of spreading the disease between important leaders of Toopoxia.

CEO of the Toopoxican Organisation, Lucian Brave, has announced today that refutes all claims of Organisation involvement in the development of the virus, and that all measures shall be taken in seeking a cure for the illness. Despite this move, several concerned citizens have taken camp outside of Organisation HQ outside of Volitaia, the situation is thus far peaceful but expected soon to turn bloody.

A sample was being handled in an Alfegan Level - 4 Biohazard laboratory of this disease. The thing was being sequenced there, ahving had it deemed too danerous for the medic team to try analyse the new mutating strains all the time.

So far, they had found 9 different strains, labelled TCV - 1 through to 9. It was the ninth one that interested them.

"It seems that this strain has a different coat to the others."
"It does? Lets see..."

The scientist moved closer in his air-tight suit, designed to protect him from these lethal viruses.

"The coating makes it more resiliant to the open air: this one is airborne. We have to warn the Toopoxicans."
One of them walked over to the centrifuge, where the blood had been spun from a patient. This virus seemed to only attack the gut cells. How strange...

He moved his had towards it, and suddenly, a bolt snapped, slamming the test-tube on the rotating arm into the body of the man. He screamed as the shattered glass cut through his suit, and an alarm sounded as the pressure in his suit dropped.

The other scientist quickly went other and turned off the centrifuge, then hit the emergancy call button on the side wall. Medics and security personnel came in quickly, scrambling to put on suits and enter the lab. They quickly cleared all the open samples into the incinerator and put the equipment in the sterilising unit, before they activated the decontamination device.

Spray of hydrogen peroxide came raining down, mixed with other potent disinfectants. The lab was soon repressurised, and the injured man hurried into a waiting sealed "stretcher", to be taken to the quarantine unit.

But the medics had taken off their suits as they had left, and not realised that the virus had spread from the blood outwards into their lungs. In 18 hours time, the would feel the result of their errors.

The arrival of this ninth airbone strain is worrying, not only for our nation but for those across the world, we must take every precaution to avoid the spread of the disease, although we are not yet willing to go to the extreme of putting the infected to death, this remains an option.

Already we have cases of the Virus reported in Regi Luni and Lexin, these patients have been put under full quarentine and their remains, when passed away, shall be autopsied by law and cremated when completed, we pray that virus does not spread to your own nation or any other.

The Dangerous Diseases Facility - 80 miles from New Zevkhay
18 hours after the incident

The man lay on the bed, sweating profusely. His bllod pressure had hit the floor, and was still dropping. Around his body were patches of purple: internal haemorriging caused by the virus as it had spread around his body.

He was suffereing what they called Type - 2: The infection taking hold of him thorugh his bllodstream, causing these horrible symptons.

A bio-suited medic ran to him as the moniter over his bed started an alarm: his heart had stopped beating. They did not try to rescusitate him: from the amount of blood that was indicated on the moniter, he had died from a massive loss of blood.

Only now had they realised that the infectionwas airborne, and had been carried out by the workers, now in quarentine with ther friends and family. But the damage had been done. They had spread it to everyone else on their journey home, and were now lying, suffering from Type 3 Pneumonic symptoms: the virus had entered their lungs, and attacked the lung tissue.

A pipe led from their chests, draining the fast-building amount of fluid in their bodies. A few had already died, and it didn't look good for the other.

The Volitaian Riots

Volitain Rioters have clashed with riot police in several locations around the Old District and Business District, homes have been evacuated and tourists are advised to avoid Volitaia. The Riots have already hospitalised 62 civilians and police and killed 4 rioters, this amongst the deadly Toopoxican Cholera Virus.

Riots today hit the Toopoxican Organisation HQ, stones and eggs were thrown at the side of the building and at members of the Organisation, when the Riot Police arrived on scene the crowd had moved up in scale having began to throw Molotov Cocktails in the scene around the Organisation building, Police have struggled contain the scene and riots continue into the night.

The Riots have also spread to Naibe, where the virus was reported just after Volitaia, Media centers have attracted attention and already the Naibe Regional Television Center has been siezed by rioters and shut down, the Volitaia Free Press expresses their condolences for those of the Naibe Television station.

Virus Goes Airborne

The strain of the virus, refferred to as TCV-09, has gone airborne, infecting already depressed citizens of Toopoxia and medical teams from Alfegos, aswell as a rumoured outbreak in the Commonwealth Colony of Saan Gali. Saan Gali having just been through a terrible war against the NPE will once again have its population damaged through outside means, the Saan Gali Communist Party has taken advantage of the situation by recruiting members of the public into their ranks.

"The virus is rapidly mutating," Dr. Giustina Barbielli said as she put down a thick folder on the conference table. "We have word that the virus has become airborne."

"The older strains, how about them?" Dr. Hendrick Colbourne asked.

"Ah, that," Dr. Derrico Lattanzio said as he opened his laptop. "The virus was first initially confused with cholera with the signs and symptoms, and the mode of transfer. The virus was transmitted by water, just like Vibrio cholerae. It had been identified as a retrovirus and acts by invading cells of the gastrointestinal mucosa. We have identified - " he turned his laptop around towards his fellow doctors - "the virus." There was a picture of a virus budding from a cell.

"The virus infects the cell, and soon incorporates its genetic material into that of the cell's. They then take over the cellular machinery to make more viruses. When the viral load exceeds 6.5 x 10^6, symptoms begin to appear.
"The virus produces this protein, which we called p88, that activates the Gs signal transduction system of the cell. Persistent activation of the system leads to efflux of chloride from the cell, and with it follows an efflux of water, leading to diarrhea characteristic of cholera. That is why it was mistaken for cholera."

"And how would the patients die?" Dr. Colbourne asked.

"Dehydration," Dr. Hank Dorsett answered, also flipping his laptop to show pictures. "This is a histologic section of the small intestine. Note that the brush border had been destroyed, and in some areas" - he pushed a button and the picture changed - "the mucosa had been totally denuded."

"What about the other organs?" Dr. Barbielli inquired.

"The old strains show capability to infect the type I pneumocytes of the lung," Dr. Dorsett said. "Additionally, they can infect platelets - "

"Potentially causing massive hemorrhage?" Dr. Lattanzio ventured.

"- yes, that," Dr. Dorsett continued, "and it can infect hepatocytes, neurons, and osteoblasts."

"Well, usually viruses infect only one organ or cell type... why that many?"

"It is a retrovirus," Dr. Dana Rastelli replied. "Retroviruses mutate fast."

"But not this fast," Dr. Barbielli objected. "First it was waterborne, and now it is airborne? No, no, too fast, too fast. There must be something in the virus... I'll go get the genome sequenced and analyzed."

Alfegos Government Warning

All citizens are informed that a possible epidemic is in its first stage of outbreak. The disease, TCV - 09, is spread by coughing and sneezing, and attacks in three different ways, depending on the entrance method to the body:
Type 1 - Classic, caused by consumtion of food that has been coughed into/contaminated water. Incubation period of 18 - 24 hours, followed by cholera-like symptons untreatable with normal medication.

Type 2 - Caused by inhalation, the virus incubates for 16 - 18 hours before attacking the lungs, throat and mouth. Causes death by asphyxia or by massive damage to lungs. Untreatable.

Type 3- Caused by entrance into the bloodstream, rare. Incubation period of 12 - 16 hours followed by massive internal bleeding and systematic organ failure. Untreatable.

Public Emergancy Epidemic Act

In operation from now on:

1) No more than 10 people are allowed to meet in the same building.
2) Therefore, all public places are now closed until further notice.
3) No travel abroad, unless given a permit by the governemnt.
4) No internal travel, save for collecting essentials.
5) Anyone found with the disease will be quarentined within their own home until they recover or die. Attempts to break out will result with shooting on sight.

Also, all cases MUST be reported to the government if this disease is to be stopped from being spread.

The streets were silent, save for the occasional rustle. The only activity was the rare car, ambulance, helicopter or increasingly body truck.

There currently seemed to be no cure for this epidemic, which had now spread to 1829 people, of whom 127 were dead.

One person had recovered, and frantically, his blood was being analysed and the antibodies replicated to create a cure for this disease.

Eilífur International Airport

When the courier stepped off the plane, he had a slight cough, he just wrote it off as the flu. He stopped by the drug store on his way home, and picked up something for the cough. It had been a long flight home. He didn't understand why a they didn't just send telegram. At least his 16 hour trip was over. Why does the government book flights with 10 hour layovers in Alaska, when they only save $5, he asked him self. After he left the drug store he got one the subway and headed home. He was coughing a lot more now. He really wasn't feeling well. He decided he would lie down when he got home. As he was walking up the stairs to his apartment his vision started to get blurry. He was felling really dizzy as he fumbled for his keys. When he finally got into his apartment he was so tired he just laid down on the couch. As he lay there he continued to cough. He was so tired he didn't even notice the blood he was now coughing up.

On public channels the following was being sent to Toopoxian news sources, air ports and any other methods of getting information to Mokan tourist in the, now isolated, nation.

The Mokan Navy has been dispatched, one hospital ship and 3 Dugal Class air assault ships are on the way to retrieve you. You will need to show your ID and passport to local authorities to be allowed onto the helicopters to escort you to the decontamination center

all traffic between Alfegos and Mokastana has been ceased as per order by the Confederate council. This has left hundreds stranded in Alfegos Airports

The Raven corps Medical teams knew better then to rush into any situation like this. And now that the situation had fallen apart it was now seemingly at its worst. Now is the time for medical teams to be inserted.

" Raven Medical this is SF pilot 03-9-b We are nearing Toopoxian Territory. All team engage Full contamination protection Protocal. We will be landing in the most infected zone if about 2 minutes. Your escort teams will take you to the nearest Medical facility."

Said the mechainical voice from the other end of the loud speaker inside the Raven corps Orca Dropship. Inside the Dropship with a mixture between wonder and long akward steers as the medical teams continually looked at the Sf troopers that where ordered to escort them. Their hasn't been to many times when SF troopers have helped anyone.

" I dont like them... They are not human... They dont even have skin!" said one of the medical researchers inside the Orca as he checked over his Hazmat suits anti-Contamination unit.

" Dont worry your right they aren't like us, they obey orders even stupid ones like ' kill youself '. You just have to have the correct command code to begin the order process." said another as he kicked one of the SF in the shin making a loud ding sound.

After some idle chit-chat the Orca began to decend into the city limits about 5 blocks from the General Hosptial. The bay doors slowly hissed open and let go off its teams. First it was the SF troopers who came out first holding their Raven corps RST-4 Riot Rifles at the ready position. Then the Medical teams came out holding their equipment.

Now they had to find the hospital...

The quarantine procedures had worked mostly: the many people who had caught the disease were now not able to spread it any further, and with sewerage being sterilised by emergancy units dropped into the sewers, the infection was soon about to run out of steam.

The antibody that had been found in the survivors blood had been reproduced like wildfire using the genetics factories of the government emergancy facilities. Soon, there would be enough for use in the rest of the Alfegos population. As long as it did not mutate again...

In the biotest lab, another piece of evidence had come through about the virus.

"We have good news at last. The latest type we have found, TCV - 10, has inherited genes that can't attack human cells. It seems that the virus has hit a dead end in mutation, and will die out soon.
May the Fego'deis watch over us."

Eilífur

The courier died in his sleep. He had spread the infection to hundreds of people before he died. The next morning hundreds of people awoke with a simple cough. nothing more. They got dressed, had breakfast and left for work. Some took the subway, some walked, some road buses, and still others road on Eilífur elevated rail. Then they arrived at work. They're coughing was worse now. They walked through crowded lobbies, and got in elevators. At every stage the infection spread, and still no one had noticed. Then the 911 calls started. hundreds of calls that went a little like this:

911 operator: 911 Emergency, How may I help you

Man: I thing this guys sick, he just clapsed. He coughing up blood and gasping for air.

911 operator: Where are you?

Man: Oh no, I don't think he's breathing

911 operator: Sir, calm down does any one there know cpr?

Man: Yes ^%&#%$ is doing it now

911 operator: Okay, give me your address

Man: 555 %##^#$$ Ave., oh jeez hurry, I don't thinks its helping

911 operator: Help will be there shortly please stay on the line

But by the time the ambulances arrived it was to late they were dead. Autopsies were preformed, but that took time and while that was happening more people were falling ill and dieing, and even more were passing on the virus to others.

Flight 74964: New Zevkhay to Los Mochins

One passenger in the back coughed mildly into a napkin as the plane entered Mokan Air space. While there technically was a barrier between ALfegos and Mokastana until the virus subsisted this flight was one of the few allowed to enter. One both sides MIG-29s escorted it to Baja dos AF base on the California peninsula. Three flights out of Alfegos had been in the air when the ban was placed. Two were ordered to land at Baja Dos AF base, while the other was ordered back to Alfegos where the Mokan army was to be transported there to help keep the peace and begin detox on the civilians.

"This is flight 7-4-9-6-4-Mokastana Airlines, requesting permission to land over."

"the base has been cleared for you, Over"

and it had, the base had been evacuated, buildings were sealed off, two hangers were filled with plastic bubbles and cots. when the people of flight 12653 got off they were greeted by Mokan soldiers in Hazmat suits wielding AM-07s. They were escorted to the first hanger where they walked through a plastic tube to get into the first bubble. the outside was immediately spayed down with a solution of chemicals strong enough to kill AIDS and most viruses known to man. Inside each person was examined, checked for any side effects. If they had none they were wrapped up in a Haz mat suit and escorted to the next hanger where they were to be held for the next 24 hours.
Each person was to receive a private bubble and cot, for the night. If they were showing signs of sickness they were immediately placed in an isolation unit.

It would only be a matter of time before something went wrong, but one thing was for sure. All civilians in any of the infected areas would be inspected and held in a place like this for the night....

Griffincrest forces within Toopoxia were ordered to assist the Toopoxican government in any way necessary. Medics were ordered to the field, and mercenaries were prohibited from leaving their bases. The colonel in charge telegrammed the Toopoxican military, inquiring if there was anything he and his men could do to help the situation.

The virus had not stopped there. What had not been realised was that it was so resiliant to the elements: as people began to go about their daily routines, they inhaled the virus still, and many more were infected.
This time though they had an antiserum, which when injected into the body helped fight the virus.
So daily life sort of resumed in Alfegos, albeit with the constant fear of infection, many people wearing masks to try not to catch the disease.

A sample of the antiserum was sent to Toopoxica, to try and help them cope with the disease long enough to stop civil unrest.

23 people had turned up positive for the virus, The Mokastana Center for Disease Prevention and Control (CDPC) had locked down the desert area. Mokan Hummers patrolled the area ordered to arrest anyone caught in the area. Meanwhile the rest of the people were fenced up on the base, each seperated from eachother, hoping to save a few of the citizens from certain death...
