OOC: It isn't, I think Moleland is just taking literary licence.
IC: The soldiers cheered as they watched the last alien machines limp away, badly damaged. "That's right, you'd better run!" shouted one man. The jets didn't take further risks, breaking off as soon as the first machine was destroyed, although two fighters took hits from the heat ray and exploded in furious balls of flame. The Japanese forces kept the line, but began to collect their dead and remove the flaming shells that used to be artillery pieces.
OOC2: It occurs to me that the size I'm RPing and the way I'm RPing I should have chosen Americans ;)

OOC2: Don't worry. As long as you don't pop up with anymore of those uber bombs :p

OOC: Yep ;)

IC: The infantry successfully destroyed the smallier tower. But 3 others survived to focus their fire. 1 of the larger towers joine din the carnage...

-------------

The larger tower survived the air strike with bearly a scratch. It returned fire at the aircraft...

The scout machine also survived, although obviously damaged. They tried to attack the aircraft with their hat rays also.

However, in the confusion, one of the infantry was entirely ignored by the martians and approached the cylinder. As they approached, a fairly small, black machine attempted to flee from them

Reports flooded into Lacombe's field command station:

"...We've got a kill! One tower down! Smaller towers are vulnerable to AT--*static*"

"This is flight lead; no kill reported on either towers or tripods. Tripod looks like it's limping; we're going around for another pass..."

"...we've lost three - no four - planes from Flight 3. No sign of parachutes..."

Lacombe grumbled at the news. They were hurting the Martians... but they were taking heavier losses than he thought. "Have the reserve squadrons take off now; their target is going to be the larger tower to the north. And have our tanks on the northern flanks advance; target the smaller towers and take them out. We'll see how the airforce deals with the larger tower before we sic the tanks on them."

"Yes sir," a lieutenant said.

"Reports on our infantry teams?"

"We've lost over half of the battalion we sent in, sir. Surviving AT-equipped teams are scattering, and trying to return fire. Uh... we've confirmed a loss of five of the six teams we sent in with C4 against the cylinder. They never got close."

"What about the sixth?"

"No contact..."

Sgt. Ross led his section up to the side of the Cylinder. "Looks like we can climb in," he said to his men.

He took a glance back at the battlefield. From here he could see the fires that were his fellow soldiers, burned where they stood. Ahead, he watched one of the larger towers hit a fighter on the wing... the plane fell to the east, and a few seconds later Ross could hear the explosion as it hit.

His gaze took in the alien tripod, having survived a barrage of missiles, but looking as if it was wounded. As he watched, he saw five more fighters circle around and close in on the tripod. Kill it this time, boys, he thought.

"Where are the other teams?" asked a corporal.

Ross shook his head. "If they survived they would have been here by now. Looks like we're it. Jaggers, you're on point. Let's get inside and do what we came to do."

One by one, they pulled themselves up the side of the cylinder. Jaggers reached the edge, crouching with his rifle at the ready. He waved, and the team joined him, then they descended into the cylinder...

The infantry team had decided to ignore the digging mechanism which now escaped to relative safety. The cylinder was just a hollow shell. Inside looked like spaces to store equipment, but it was empty. Wires hung from the ceiling...

----------------------

The heat Rays at last pounded the infantry into submission. They now lacked the firepower to destroy any more of the towers...

---------------------------

One of the scouts was destroyed by the fighters. The remaining one returned fire, supported by one of the large towers

-----------------------

The tanks advancing on the cylinder were attacked by the projectile launcher inside the pit. High explosives rained down on them at regular intervals as they advanced

York
05:00 hours

The prime-minister had managed a few hours sleep before an aide woke him with news of the London attack. He called his ministers to an emergency session where the situation was explained. London was being evacuated and the martians were using nerve agents. Further more communications had been lost with Washington, Yarkai, Karasi and the Indonesian states. Yarkai and Karasi were no real loss, some MPs had to be shown where they were on the map, But the potential loss of the US and the Indonesians was. Again the use of limited yield nuclear devices was brought up.

It was decided London would not, could not be defended, the armed forces would simply block the progress of the martians thus giving time for the population to flee, limited use of weapons would be used to safeguard Londons historical heritage. This of course did not go down well with the joint military chiefs they were effectively having one arm tied behind their collective back. A representative of the government would be sent in an attempt to open up negotiations, A request that the martians would see London as an open city would also be put forward.

Meanwhile the carnage went on

Green leaders radar officer shouted a warning' 'Skipper the scouts are returning'

'Roger that, Green leader to Green flight, as soon as you've dropped, target the scout machines'

He brought his tornado level and switched to cannons his HUD soon targeting a lone scout.
'With me Green two' two clicks on his radio came back, affirmative.

The tornado came in fast he fired a two second burst into the damaged armoured shell of the scout, just under a hundred rounds hit. Green two followed the squadron leader his cannons spitting. the badly damaged scout opened up with its own heatray, green two began melting away then exploded as fuel and ammo caught, neither pilot or navigator escaped.
After dropping on the fighting machines the next pair came in, neither made it both were plucked from the sky and went crashing into the ground like flaming meteors.
The remainder of the tornado squadron launched their attacks with mixed success, Green leader made a further two attacks before his cannons clicked empty and he was forced to withdraw. Out of the eighteen aircraft seven made it home intact, two failed to make it back and crashed some miles away from the battle zone, luckily the four crew men parachuted to safety and made it home. They waited for debriefing to find out how they had fared.

Two of the three scout machines had been destroyed. But they had prevented an attack on the bombardment machines so they had been successful. The fighting machines, although damaged, Survived the airstrike. It seemed the armour had been modified to take the attack!

The surviving ground for forces were now in trouble. The combination of fighting machine heat rays and Bombardment machine shells was proving deadly

*assumes victory*

Again, the martians withdrew, presumably to repair, rearm...

The troops on the ground tried to pluck up the will to cheer the scouts destruction but they were too busy. The tanks were taking losses, the 10th hussars were down to four and the Royal Yeomanry a mere two. and the infantry couldn't cope with the new bombardment capability of the fighting machines, entire rows of houses and streets were wiped out in an instant along with the soldiers sheltering in them. The men began to fall back as their weapons proved ineffectual against the martians, soon northern Harrow was a mass of flame and black clinging smoke. Harrow Weald golf-course was just a series of burning Warriors and multiple craters, bodies of crewmen blackened by fire lay everywhere. The soldiers and tanks fought bravely but it was futile. They abandoned Harrow to take up positions in Wembley.

The Commander of Army forces passed on the prime ministers orders concerning the use of heavy weapons within London. His division and brigade commanders were furious, all down to the lowest private the order was passed and was met with incredulity some couldn't help but cry with laughter when they heard of the plan to negotiate.

As morning broke the police helicopter banked north of Uxbridge and headed north east towards Eastbury s it passed over the Grand Union Canal the pilots and passengers could see the destruction caused by the fighting. The two junior ministers shifted uncomfortably in their seats and cast nervous glances at their boss, the deputy prime-minister as he spoke to their fellow passenger the lord mayor of London. The police pilot informed them that they would land in moments. they would be walking the three quarters of a mile to the nearest fighting machine.

The delegation could not help but be awestruck by the sheer size and power of the martian fighting machines. Even torn and wounded they were terrifying to behold. Surely said the deputy PM anyone who could build such a thing was of an intelligence centuries beyond us, such intelligence should be able to see that this war was a mistake, the soldiers being first on the scene was a mistake, the martians had simply defended themselves. They walked towards the martians which so far ignored them, then as if sensing their presence the head of one of those great machines turned, its heat ray projector glowing green in the first light.

Somehow, the fighting machine missed the helicopter. Whether ti was careless, or realising it to being unarmd, just didn't care was unclear. It did not fire again, but followed its comrades back towards Watford.

OOC: I will not attack until dawn 'tomorrow'. So you can freely RP until then.

The martians did not reappear that day. However, during the night the fourth martian cylinder landed. As the next day drew onwards towards midday, and an attack was expected shortly...

While the Germans retreated and prepared, the martians repaired themselves. With the Germans now out of range, the Handling machines - Careful to avoid the mines - Dragged the two damaged, but living, fighting machines into the pit. By now the second cylinder was opened, and out came 3 new scout machines.

OOC: To Zeheran

IC: The martians spent the morning repairing themselves. At midday, they were ready. 3 'flashs' were seen in the pit. Then the projectiles landed. Huge explosions landed around the German positions. Each successive short getting nearer the target.

Inside the Cylinder:

Ross looked around the vacant chamber. "The hell...?" He motioned for his section to secure the area.

So the Martians had emptied out the cylinder. And those towers had to come from somewhere... "Keep an eye out for openings, tunnels," he told his men. "The Martians didn't just vanish."

Outside the Cylinder:

The surviving infantry retreated; out of over three hundred men, only twenty or thirty managed to escape the heat rays.

On the northern side, ten tanks moved into position. Given the amount of fire power required to take down a tower, the force split its attention between the two smaller towers they faced; five tanks per tower. Shells soon were on their way to the base of the towers.

The surviving planes of the first two squadrons now broke their attack in an attempt to return to base. Five more planes didn't make it; the heat rays destroying their engines. Now, the two reserve squadrons focussed on the larger tower to the north. Each plane fired a missile; a total of thirty six focussed on one tower. It had to be enough, the pilots were thinking...

"Take cover!", the officers shouted over the comlinks. The soldiers threw themselves into the bunkers, hearing the earth shook as the projectiles exploded. The German artillery opened counter-battery fire from concealed positions. The soldiers in the first line prepared their weapons and waited.

<snippy>

The planes destroyed the larger two, and the tanks also destroyed their target. The surviving large tower targetted the tanks, as did the surviving scout machine.

--------------

As they continued to explore the cylinder, they noticed space to contain materials... Did the martians build everything upon landing?

As the artillery opened fire, the martians returned fire directly at the artillery, and appeared to have the upperhand over the German artillery.

OOC: Moleland, I apologize, but I need to drop out of this thread. I've got RL issues and work to deal with and other threads need my attention. :( It was fun while it lasted, and I hope to take part in other RPGs from you in the future. I don't care what happens to Japan, storm Tokyo, just say that you lost quite a bit and the soldiers fought to the end.
Thanks and Cheers. :D
