Prologue
The rumbling of ships can be heard even from Jonas’ house. He was one of many that refused to leave his home during the Second Invasion as the military called it. A young man, 23 years of age, with much anger at these invaders upsetting the lives of his people. He was sitting in his room when his long time friend Olan banged on the door. “Jonas! Jonas! Open up!”
He opened the door to find an exhausted Olan sitting on the porch. Exhausted from running to his no doubt, which was situated on a steep hill in the city. “What is it Olan? What’s the matter?”
“Jonas…come…quickly,” he coughed, “Jed is gathering some followers to Mt. Orelas.”
“Orelas! Why?!”
“Something about it won’t be safe to stay in the city. That it could be leveled in the invasion.”
“Alright I’ll be right out. Let me get my coat.”
He walked back in and climbed the stairs to his bedroom. He searched for his coat and peddled through his clothes on the top shelf. He pulled out a box and set out on the bed. He opened it to reveal his 9 millimeter, he took it out and inserted the clip. He took the five clips that were in his box and placed them in his coat side pocket. He put his coat on and headed back downstairs.
“What took you so long,” Olan said.
“Just finding something.”
Olan looked at him. “Ookay. Lets go.”
“Right.”
A brief drive to the city square, Jonas saw Jed on a soapbox making a speech about the move. He drove around and stopped at the crowd. Pushing through the crowd, Jonas was curious about what Jed was saying. :”…must leave this place before we die from the ensuing battle.”
“Why leave when we could fight?”
“Fight? Fight with what? Our shotguns and hunting rifles can’t possibly stand a chance against the invaders. We need to evacuate to Mt. Orelas to escape destruction. Please listen to reason people of Korlias. I for one will take heed of my very own words. For the ones that stay, I respect your bravery but for the people who come with me I will appreciate your actions.”
Jed walked off the soapbox and headed for his truck. “Jed you old fool! What are you up to?”
“Hello Jonas, Olan,” he nodded towards them both,” I am trying to save these people from certain death.”
“I see. How goes this crusade of yours?”
“Who knows I will be waiting for them at Mt. Orelas until sunrise tomorrow. You should come Jonas, you too Olan.
“Well I don’t know Jed…”
“What is there to know when you will surely die here. Listen son I have seen what war can do to people, to entire cities. Trust me on this, things will go awry,” he said with a stern voice.
“I’ll think about it Jed.”
“That’s all I ever ask of you, I’ll expect you there,” he said as he drove off.
“But I never said I was going!” he yelled at Jed driving down the street.
Later that night, Jonas and Olan met outside with their belongings, one duffel bag each.
“Ready,” Jonas said as he packed the bags in the trunk.
“Lets go.”
It took them almost a three hour drive through the night to get to Mt. Orelas, There they saw lines of flashlights and other lighted material climbing towards the mountain. A spectacular light show. They finally reached where Jed was residing. “Alright Jed we’re here now why the hell did you want everyone to come here.”
“I was about to explain that right now,” he turned on the microphone to the speaker system he set up,” gather round my fellow people. During the war my Division fought on the cliffs of Mt. Orelas against Lingunan troops and later Cyverons. No Lingunan ever found the base of operations near Mt. Orelas or how we were able to flank their mountain troops quickly. The truth my people, is that Mt. Orelas was the base of operations.”
“What?!”
“How is that possible?”
“Come I will show you. Help me pull this brush and vine down.”
People began cutting down the brush and vine that cover what Jed want to show them. Debris began to fill up behind them piling higher and higher until they found what Jed was looking for. It was a massive cave-like tunnel with a huge blast door in it.
“This base has been abandoned since the end of the Cyveron War. Only a handful of people know of it from my division now since most of them are dead. This should be a safe place to reside in during the invasion.”
He punched in the keyboard with his old serial number from the war. Their was a loud bang and then the door began to open. “Alright people, now in an orderly fashion begin moving into the base. There you go nice and easy, there’s no hurry,” he said as he waved more in.
Six hours had passed, and around six thousand people had already gotten inside with another some nine to ten thousand to go. “Its almost sunrise Jed.”
“I know Jonas. I know.”
Sunrise. With only one thousand people left to get into the mountain Jed was out making sure that things were running smoothly. Then loud roars could be heard in the backdrop. It was the military transports leaving and they looked like they were in quite a hurry.
“Oh no,” Jed began running towards the entrance. Tripping and stumbling on the shrubbery and rocks, running through crowds of people, something must’ve been wrong for him to run that fast. “Jed! Jed! What’s wrong!?”
“We have to get these people in NOW!”
“Alright we need to step it up people!”
Jonas watched as hundreds of vessels began hurrying into space. Looking through his binoculars he saw soldiers abandoning their equipment and rushed towards their transports. “What the hell is going on?”
One hour later they had only a few hundred to go when suddenly transports began exploding in the sky. “What in the hell?!”
Lightning bolts began to tear open ships, sometimes obliterating them. Soon they were hitting the ground, then the city. People getting hit in the streets crying out in terror. Charred and burned to a crisp, some turning to ashes instantly. A purplish hue began to envelop the sky, then clouds started to form and rain down more lightning down onto the city. Buildings were blasted raining down more debris on the people of Korlias, burying them alive. People tried to leave the city only to be killed by blasts. “Jonas come on!”
Olan began to pull on him dragging him to the door. People began to panic and rushed through the door. Trampling started to ensue, severely injuring some people. Tears of children soaking their parents bodies as they lie injured. Jonas picked up an injured woman and carried her to the door. Lightning began to strike on the ground behind them. “C’mon c’mon lets go!” can be heard by some people. The last people had gotten through the door.
“Close it! C’mon!”
The began to shut slowly with more lightning hitting the entrance of the tunnel. It inched closer and closer. Before a blast could hit the crowd of people the door shut. “That was close,” Jed said climbing up from the ground.
“Ok the power generator should be right here,” he opened the door to the generator room.
“Alright. Lets hope this baby still works,” Jed pushed the lever up and a large hum filled the room. Then engine noises replaced it. Lights started to turn on shining the corridors of the huge mountain complex..
Alright boys, follow me. The two followed Jed to the next destination which took 30 minutes of walking through a maze of corridors and elevators. They enter the room to find a table with maps laid across it and maps on various walls. “This is the command room for the base in that room there is the arsenal for this floor. This base was largely abandoned even to the point that weapons and equipment were left behind. I’ll show you where the rest of the caches are in various parts of the base.“
He pulled out a map under the table, and pointed at the various locations and tunnels. The chief engineer that created this base wanted its inhabitants to last for long periods of time, we’re talking years here. He basically designed it to house an advanced hydroponics farm to sustain the troops and a reclamation system to keep a flow of clean drinkable water. It was also designed to house an entire division of troops. It was the base of operations after all. We are about 2400 meters underground, right now. “
“Wow Jed, I don’t know what to say.”
“I know its a lot to take in. Take your time," Jed said walking towards the door then stopped," but not too much time."
Jed walked and Jonas walked over to the table and stared down at the map. God…
